Schooner is a rescued golden doodle from the county animal shelter. He was only four months old when adopted. As with many pound puppies, they come with some fears and sensitivities and he was difficult and fearful about grooming. Schooner went to many different groomers over his first two years as we shopped to find a hood fit. In some of those shops, he would downright refuse to return. None of those bigger shops that we returned to, ever gave him a consistent cut, so you never knew what you were going to get. We've been going to this tiny shop called Four Paws for the last four years. You always get the same groomer, which is a plus because they develop a close relationship. Schooner has never had a fear of returning to Four Paws. In fact, he pulls his way in to see his favorite groomer, Sarah and assistant Crystal. Schooner absolutely loves these ladies and they are the only shop I trust with my furbaby! They give the best doodle cuts and are always consistent with his style. They love him too. In fact, I called one time to ask if he is done, and they pretended they didn't have a Schooner there. Apparently, Schooner spends a fair amount of time interrupting their grooming session with his constant kisses and they are rather fond of this love fest. read more

Nipples are gone. Smooth as can be. Even if your eyes were closed you could not feel anything.

Our puppy, Rufus, ran off leash in Briones and managed to become ENTIRELY covered in some kind of sticky burrs which clung ro EVERY body part. He was almost unrecognizable. Our erstwhile black and white dog was a generic beige color from the tip of his nose to his tail. We brought him home and attempted to de-burr him using gloves, brushes, scissors, electric beard trimmers.... it was going to be a monumental task and we were short on time. We called Four Paws and Tracy said we could bring him in. Two hours later we picked him up and he looked absolutely pristine. We don't eemebr him looking so clean and good! Tracy is a consumate professional who knows how to deal with dogs including neurotic ones like Rufus. She is incredibly well informed and informative with little tips for your furry friend. I can't say enough about this place. As a bonus, they are VERY reasonably priced. These are good people! read more

Wonderful ladies and gents to care for your fur baby. Ignore the 1 star reviews. Haters gonna hate. I've witnessed the slouches who being in their matted, overgrown pups expecting miracles. People, are you going to not wash your hair for weeks, not comb or brush it, let it get dreads and expect a salon owner to instantly make you look like a movie star? No? Then don't come in with attitude about your lack of pet care and blame it on the groomer. Buy a stuffed animal for yourself and call it a day. Let the real pet people take over. Tracy not only grooms our great dane, Griffon, for dog shows - she has also given me endless tips regarding diet, training, grooming while on the road, dog shows etc... One day I called asking for help when our black great dane exploded in dandruff - a few sugg and surprise!!!... she called a few days later to find out how he was doing. Griffon loves Tracy - [isn't thrilled with the nail trims but jumps up to 'kiss' her when we arrive]. One day she was at the same dog show as us and when Griffon saw her he went ballistic with joy - and kept looking for her while we were in the ring. They did a good job on my spaniel's haircuts but I won't be going back I found them to always charge me more than they said they would and I'm thinking my dog is there to get washed and cut and how could it cost more. He is not in bad condition and it's just annoying to be told my dog is severely matted when he wasn't so I'm never going back there again. I took him away and didn't even let them groom him the last time and I was also disappointed how long they took each time, seven hours one time. read more

Our rescue poodle did not like being groomed until we found Sarah at Four Paws. She did an amazing job on Frankie with no nicks or burns anywhere. She was happy after which was never the case after visiting other groomers and we did not have to get bit trying to do it ourselves. Highly recommend Four Paws. read more

They are rude and incompetent. I made an appointment for my dog to get a grooming, I wrote the date and time in my calendar as I was talking to her, so no mistake on my behalf. When my wife took our dog for the appointment, they would not take him because apparently they had him for an hour earlier, which is not correct at all. They even wanted to charge us for a cancellation fee of 30 dollars. 0 for customer service and 0 for etiquette. read more

Polite, and a reasonable location. Only half of my pet's nails were trimmed, though. There is an obvious difference between them, where they chose to either trim very very closely (ouch) or some not at all. It looks like they put little effort into it. Cotton balls were left in both ears after the wash. We discovered them a few hours afterward. Sigh. I can't imagine that we'd go here again. read more

I brought my dog here for the first time and the vibe I got dropping her off was not very good, but the lady seemed alright so I left. It took them about four hours and they shaved my poodle down all the way because her hair was matted. When I got her I was excited and she seemed happy... When I got home I saw what has actually happened. Whoever has done the shaving / cutting has cut my puppy in multiple places. On the tip of her ear, a slice into one of her nipples where there was still dried blood they didn't bother wiping away, a cut inside her armpit, and chaffing around her vagina. I cannot believe they didn't tell me that any of this had happened. Not only that she told me an estimate over the phone of $65, then when she said it was okay to pick her up she said, "it's $85 today and cash only." Okay... Right. I could care less about price; but hurting my puppy in multiple different places is just not acceptable, especially if you try to hide it from the owner. Admit you made a mistake and offer something to help ease the pain. The owner I'm assuming had the audacity to call me to ask my opinion of the service I received a few days later. I was afraid to answer the phone due to what I might say out of anger. I haven't called back. I also will be sure to let everyone in my apartment complex who has multiple dogs to steer clear. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. Absolutely unacceptable service on the staffs part. I called a week ahead to get my dog groomed. My appointment was for 2pm on a Friday, they said four hours. Fine. I tried calling around 5:45pm to get an update and heard nothing. I ended up driving over and the two ladies working told us they hadn't even started on my dog yet and that he had been in a crate for four hours. Four hours in a crate. Wet, to come to find out. Absolutely awful treatment of a pet and the worst communication. We ended up telling them we were taking my dog, groomed or not and they said we should go wait by our car and that they had show dogs they were grooming and "we were different". I was definitely not going to go "wait by my car" while they knew I was upset and still had my dog. So we waited maybe 20 minutes and watched how they handled other dogs. One aimlessly jumped off the grooming table and looked like it hurt itself, then proceeded to lick their Taco Bell fast food wrappers from the ground as well as fallen hair from other dogs. Then one of the ladies tried to lift another dog and didn't look like she should be lifting something that heavy. Also, their "house" dog, maybe the owners, was ingesting all of the fallen hair from the grooming and eating discarded paper towels on the ground as well. There is also old food EVERYWHERE in this little space. Can't help but thinking the dogs may get into this as well. I felt so uncomfortable in this whole situation. I had my boyfriend ask for my dog because I was so livid that it was now six hours into this mess and my dog was still wet and not groomed. They tried to make causal and friendly conversation with me, but by that point, I already knew I would never be returning. I ended up taking my dog to a different groomer the next day. read more

I NEVER write reviews, but felt I had to.... I do not recommend taking your dog here. First off, TERRIBLE customer service, I can see why they work with dogs and not humans. I can overlook that and let it go if they do a good job. Second, I have a Samoyed which is a difficult breed for groomers because their hair mats easily and they are loud and can nip if they get very irritated. We anticipated being charged more than normal due to this. They quoted me $200 (cash only) after they received him and gave him a look over. I agreed over the phone. The groomer let me know that he was done for the day and needed to have him for another hour the next day to finish. I went to pick him up and without bringing him out they asked me to pay $125 of this, which I did and gave a generous $25 tip for her troubled because he is a tougher breed. She brought him out and then they informed me that THEY SHAVED HIS STOMACH. They made no outreach to ask if shaving him was okay, which I would have responded NO as double coat Samoyed's fur doesn't grow back correctly if shaved..... I let it go and didn't make a big deal of it.... its done and they already have my $125 and $25 Tip. She asks if they can have him back for an hour tomorrow, I agree. I drop him off the next day. She lets me know that he is done an hour later and that its now $150 for the remainder($275 total now not including tip). I tell them that number is egregiously higher than the $200 we agreed on earlier (their normal base grooming rate is $65 by the way) and with Tip, I am at $300 for this grooming. They begin to berate me for being a terrible owner (I'm not a terrible owner) and a bad person for not paying the additional $75 for his grooming that was not agreed upon. I paid them the remaining balance to get to $200 (and $10 extra because I felt bad) and told them I wasn't coming back. I then get home to find giant holes in his fur where they ripped out his fur, bruise marks on his nose from the muzzle they used, and again the GIANT shaved stomach. He even was skittish when he got home and ran when we tried to pet him for the first hour home. I was only able to take these pictures because I coaxed him over with a brand new bone...... read more

Four paws is really the only place we will bring our senior, special needs boys. We have two brothers, 16 year old mini poodles. One is blind with no teeth left and has some cognitive loss. The other is partially blind and deaf and has bad arthritis. The first time we brought them there we were skeptical. We knew one had "dryer seizures" in the past and the other one gets SUPER STRESSED OUT at the groomers. So when we picked them up you can imagine our surprise when they were CALM! Usually they're super keyed up on pickup, but not this time. They seemed like their normal selves. Every experience after that has been great. They gave one dog a little green faux hawk once. :) They let the stressed out dogs be a little free as they're being groomed. So instead of tying them up to a collar (for the ones that need it) they groom "on the move" which helps with anxiety. The staff is friendly and informative. Chrystal is the best and makes sure we're informed and that the pups are well taken care of. It is a cash only business, but it's a small detail compared to how great our boys look and feel after going there. read more

We have been taking our dog Jagger, golden doodle to Four Paws for about 2 years. Our dog is big, 70+ lbs and he doesn't mind going there. They have always done a good job and we will continue to bring him there. We do a shampoo and nail cut in between haircuts to help with the matting. read more

I would give Four Paws a minus 10 if I could! PLEASE, DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG TO THIS UNPROFESSIONAL PLACE! We called Four Paws on Saturday, 2/2/19 and scheduled a 11am hair cut and a shower appointment for our dog on Monday, 2/4/19. After dropping our dog off on time, 3 1/2 hours later I received a call from one of the staff member, Kristal, at 2:20pm, with an "update" that our dog had not yet had his shower neither a hair cut as scheduled and that if I wanted they could wash him today and cut his hair two days later (this coming Wednesday). Apparently, they book several dogs' appointment for the same time, and according to the staff member, Kristal, a lot of them arrive at 11am. When I questioned why our dog had been sitting there for the past 3 hours and a half when we had an appointment for 11am., Kristal was very dismissive and put the owner on the phone. After I explained the situation, the owner's words to me were: "take your dog to the other places that you like, sweetheart!" How disrespectful was that!? I had a feeling, from the very moment I first stepped inside that place that the energy was bad. When one of the staff members saw our dog and I mentioned that we we had a hair cut and a shower appointment, I heard a NEGATIVE mumbling comment that wasn't good, but decided to ignored it. The place looks dirty, small and understaffed. The staff members reflect the owner's attitude of how she conducts her business: rude and unprofessional. As to us, I am sorry that our dog had to endure 3 1/2 hours under the Four Paws' nonexistent care. If this is how they treat people, I can only imagine how they treated our dog, and the other dogs, while they sit there. FOUR PAWS GROOMING is a place that will stay on my radar and I will gladly be open about our terrible experience with this place. Our dog is our family. My Shih Tzu, Woogie, is my very special boy and the most important thing in my life-no joke! When searching out a groomer naturally I want someone who can do a great job, but more importantly, I want him to be treated well. When I picked him up not only did he look adorable, but his tail was waggin' away. I could tell he was a happy boy! I have been to probably 7 different groomers in the past 8 years and these guys are one of the best-in the top 3. One of those is in Los Angeles and they charged $50(which is very reasonable), but not an option based on location, and the other is in Berkeley. I won't mention names but they charge upwards of $80 which I find ridiculous. For that I would prefer to groom him myself. When I started going there they had lower rates but they kept raising them. They did this once at check out without ever informing me, which I find extremely rude. Four Paws is in a bit of a strange local, but so what. They charge a reasonable rate and do a great job. Woogie was groomed by Tracy, whom I could tell was an animal lover and nothing makes me happier then picking up a calm happy pup! Although I live in El Cerrito, I will be returning to Four Paws! read more

I took my new little pupster, Mortimer, to get his first groom since I adopted him. With the recent heat, I thought a nice summer cut would be good. When I picked him up, he was adorable and looked like a little stuff animal. The whole staff seems to be gentle and loving to all the animals. Did a poor job grooming Yorkie-practically shaved her. I was horrified and praying for fur to grow back quickly. Also expensive. I took my maltipoo Kali here after reading reviews. I am extremely happy with how she turned out the groomers listen to you and do exactly what you tell them. I took Kali to PetSmart and she turned out the complete opposite of what I wanted and she was traumatized she didn't act herself for a few days. After picking her up today from Four Paws my Kali was happy she was excited to see me and she acted herself from now on I'm only going to take her to Four Paws to get groomed. read more

I can't say enough good things about Crystal. She did amazing work on my husky who hadn't been groomed in way too long. He hates being groomed and is a crier (husky problems) but he has never looked better! Sometimes after a husky groom their can be residual hair left behind but there was NONE and she spent time telling me what she did for him and how he was during his visit. This was so nice seeing as it was our first time there and with covid we couldn't go inside. And she finished all this within two hours and gave me a heads up when my boy was almost done. Not sure why this is saying I am tagged in Hawaii as that's where I would LOVE to be right now but I live in WC.... This is my first yelp review ever and I am so happy to leave such a positive one for the gals at Four Paws Grooming! My fiancée and I adopted our dog, Jersey (a miniature poodle terrier mix: @goodboyjersey on IG), a little over a month ago and this was his first grooming experience aside from when he arrived at the shelter when we adopted him. I researched groomers in the area because he is a COVID dog.... separation anxiety, anxious around meeting new people and new places, head shy....so I wanted to make sure that we were taking him to a place where he would feel safe, or at least as comfortable as possible. When he first arrived to FPG, he was shaking and super nervous and we were anxious to leave him too (new dog owner guilt), but Crystal made us feel okay right from check in! She greeted him kindly and let him sniff her out, and asked us what we wanted from our visit in detail to make sure they styled and groomed to our preference. We were estimated for pick up around 6-7PM (we dropped off at 1PM), but got the call for pick up about two hours later. Crystal let us know that Jersey flipped out when he got inside in the kennel, pooped everywhere, but calmed down when they took time to assure him during grooming. When we arrived to pick him up he looked fantastic, and was so comfortable in Crystals arms compared to when we dropped him off. He even gave her licks goodbye which is a huge step! Crystal was very clear in giving us advice to ask for a straight in visit because of his anxiety so that they could best serve him next time. They were honest about how he did during his visit and gave us the best and most authentic recap of his preferences and behavior during grooming. Even though he made a mess all over and likely gave them a tough time before grooming, they still said they loved him and would welcome him back. I would highly recommend Four Paws Grooming for all these reasons! We will definitely be back read more

When you walk into Four Paws....it is not really all that fancy. However.....I have to say that this is the BEST GROOMERS and most accomodating pet place you will ever find. My dog is more important to me than just about anything. I'm so glad a friend recommended this place to me. Sarah loves animals like crazy....and it shows!!! I am a new client that read the great reviews on yelp and called to make an appointment. Their phones were down because if their recent move so I just showed up with my scruffy puppy and Shannon greeted me and said they could do her bath but it would be awhile. I said fine. I came back later without a phone call. I don't recommend that. They are very efficient and will call when ready. I am impatient when away from my dog over an hour. I had a sit in the busy hallway and wait. It did not take long at all. When I saw my beautiful baby all is well with the world. I made a follow up bath for two weeks early in the day and the assured me she would be done quickly. I live about 20-25 minutes from this shop but highly recommend them. My dog Is happy when I pick her up. That means a lot to me! read more

Took my 3 month old Maltipoo Rocky, to Four Paws Grooming . I was very worried in the beginning as this was his first grooming session and also reading some reviews I was not sure. But I have to say I was very pleasantly suprised. I was met by Krystal who was super nice and made me understand all the things they do . She was also very happy to get a list from me of what I wanted, I know I can be demanding:) Krystal made Rocky feel very comfortable. HE was done within 2 hours and when we came to pick him up he was looking really good and super cute. Thank you Krystal for taking care of Rocky, loved how you have groomed him.
