My go-to pet store. Staff are knowledgeable and wonderful with my reactive dog. They donate to the animal shelter and are incredibly kind to the shelter dogs I bring in, promoting them on their social media and giving them treats. They also fostered a kitten in store who was adopted quickly. I trust Petropolis staff to give me recommendations that will be worth my money. They have regular free sample events where my dog can try a variety of natural healthy treats. I've never been disappointed in a product from this store. I can't even tell you how sweet and nice the girl working the counter here was! As soon as I entered, she offered my baby a treat and gave her some loving which made her feel welcomed in. I love when true animal lovers work at pet stores. They had lots of cool, unusual treats and interesting healthy freezer items like JuJu organic fresh greens. She offered my baby treats and pets and gave my girl a nice time so that meant a lot. I bought some canned salmon food she is loving for $2. This was a clean and well organized little family owned store. It's nice to have that intimate pet store feeling that has local places foods versus the huge mega ones. She recommended I try to go to the Purrmaid cat cafe in the same lot having my friend watch my pet and that was a great recommendation as well! My husband and I moved backed to The States a year ago after living in Germany and Switzerland for the last 15 years. We have raised many dogs in our 35 years together, all on a raw diet 25 years before it ever became popular. We now only have our mixed-doodle, Nero, age 4. He's fantastic! We travel regularly for work, and I had been looking for a local pet supply store to occasionally supplement Nero's raw food diet when I cannot prep and freeze-to-thaw his meals ahead of time. I needed something to just make it easier on our pet sitter who gets a little grossed out by the process. She's a vegetarian. I make him his own raw food at home with great success and affordability. A trusted neighbor with a nearby ranch in Somis encouraged me to try Petropolis for the selections. I read the Yelp reviews and drove on over. Upon entering, I was encouraged as the store had what appeared to be an abundance of variety for pets. Toys, treats, food, a holistic grooming section, but scarce cat supply section and a limited raw food selection. As I looked and tried to inquire, they did not have everything I was looking for for my Nero. The raw selection was limited. Supplements were okay though. The owner, Shauna?, offered to order whatever I was interested in, but that's where it gets pricey. She was a tad over-selling the products and my red flag went off when I realized she was self-indulging in her own knowledge by her excessive talking. An immediate turn-off. I wanted to leave. I know my dog and raw food knowledge as well, know I can find the products myself at unbeatable prices and the owner wouldn't let me get a word in. I became flustered, but remained tolerant. Obviously, this is her job, to sell and push the product. So I continued to listen. Ultimately, I wasn't sold on the pre-made raw. This place is a tiny hole-in-the wall store that is completely overwhelming! It was tacky and cramped. Way too much going on! There was an employee there that was very very sweet. She was the first person to greet me. She was dressed way to casually for a retail job- faded t-shirt, hair in a top-bun, leggings- the owner and a teenage employee were dressed in a Petropolis shirt and work pants. Basically appropriate work attire. The owner, who was nice enough and "retail" helpful, was a non-stop talker of information overload. I have never been so talked-at by a pet food person before and have my conversation about my dog hijacked so many times. I don't think she was ever actually listening. I had to get out of there. All this took place over 8-10 minutes. It was an intense visit. Then, as I was trying to just buy an overpriced toy to be nice and not leave empty handed, the owner continued to talk to her two employees about a personal crisis/not crisis right then and there. Extremely unprofessional. I'm right there! You have another client, her daughter and dog and myself 3 meters from you! The sweet employee, who appeared to be more than half the owner's age, tried to soothe the owner to no avail. It was just an all around uncomfortable situation. This was my first time shopping in this place, and unless I need to come in here for an emergency, it is not worth the trek across town for such an awkward encounter at a dog food shop. I'll continue to order my supplements for Nero from the supplier directly or find an alternative store. There is a sign in the store that says, "Good Vibes Only." Not my experience. 3 stars is pushing it. This store has plenty of potential if it was bigger, added more variety to its raw inventory, lowered prices and had an attitude adjustment. *** In response to the owner's question regarding my above comments (I don't know how Yelp works, I'm bloody 67. I came back to later to further comment and edit for clarification.) I am grateful you responded so promptly, Shawna. That's professional and shows you care about your business and wish to make a connection. I would like to point something out. I said the store, Petropolis, has plenty of potential. That comes directly down to the leadership. Strengthen your leadership skills - it will strengthen your team and build confidence, which was lacking the day I was in there. Your team could wise up and follow your stable leadership, which has again, potential if you harness it. I was there about a month or so ago. I just remember it was bloody hot out! This is a lovely store but the groomer, Erin, is unprofessional. She didn't show up for our appointment last week. This week we waited outside for 10 minutes after our appointment time. She finally came, walked right past us and I said, "Are you Erin?" She said "yes" and continued to the back of the store. No apology for the week before when she didn't show up, or for being late. I was told she would give me a discount for her "no show" the week before. She charged me $70. And insisted that this price was with the discount and that prices had gone up. Her grooming skills are just ok but she is unprofessional and needs supervision and training. I have gone to the Petropolis groomer since they first started offering the service and have never experienced anything like this. Needless to say, we will not be returning. read more

Love, love, love this store! Stopped by on a whim on Saturday to see what they had for my dog who has severe allergies. Shawna was amazing, friendly, and helpful. My very picky dog actually loved the few things I bought her so I went back the next day and got to meet Lupita. You can feel her positive energy and amazing vibe and you can tell she truly cares about her job and the customers she meets! she made some food suggestions for my picky pup and had an amazing shopping experience and learned a few things about the foods to feed my dog. Cute little store on Santa Rosa Road on the south end of Camarillo. No live pet sales, just supplies, toys, food, treats, collars, leashes etc. I stopped in to browse and look for puzzle toys. The woman who helped me admitted they didn't have a large selection of puzzle toys, but did help me find some really awesome treats. I like that they focus on natural and organic foods here. They also have cool animal bits like smoked/dried turkey legs and stuff. A little gross maybe, but also cool. After helping me pick some treats that are exactly what I was looking for, and after I'd already paid, the employee remembered some free samples she had and gave me one that I might also like. Very good customer service and friendly atmosphere. I really like this store! PS they just have this one location now. They used to have 2 stores and this is their sole store at this time. I confirmed this with the employee who explained that the store's owner wanted to spend more time with her kids and running 2 stores wasn't allowing that to happen. :) read more

Petropolis is a very nice and helpful local non-chain, pet store. They have a very nice selection of foods, harnesses, toys, etc. for both cats and dogs, with a good price on Nulo cat food, (which is my cats' current favorite food). The employees are great and patient. Plus, Petropolis is excellent at practicing Covid 19 measures....and are very mask conscious. I respect that in this current society. I don't shop here too often because I only come for dog toys, but they have lots of toys, treats, and dog accessories. Everyone who greets me is always very nice. Today was the first time I brought my 13 yr old Belgian Malinois for a bath and a blowout (about 50 lbs and very furry) I was quoted $50 on the phone but initially charged $60 - when the owner (I think?) asked the groomer about it she gladly adjusted it without a problem and said she probably did quote me $50 on the phone. $60 would still be reasonable but I respect the principle that she honored her quote without batting an eye and I will definitely be back. Ruckus looks and smells good and his pounds of hair are sitting in their Shop Vac, not mine so that's worth it to me. Since my dog didn't really need a major haircut I can't attest to the rest of the grooming skills, but I was told she's been grooming for at least 20 years. I'd recommend anyone else giving her a try considering my experience today. read more

I came here awhile ago and had an amazing experience with an older woman who worked here. She was really great, greeted me right away, asked about my pets, helped pick out or suggest products and sent me home with samples. She just made the whole thing an experience and really fun. So a couple years later I have some new pets and wanted to get them a little toy or treat and remembering this experience decided to make a 45 minute drive over here on my day off. I walk in and the cashier is on her phone...doesn't even bother to look up. A little bit later she asks if I need help begrudgingly while still on her phone. I say I'm just looking and continue browsing. After a little bit longer I ask a few questions while I'm walking around, I specifically say I'm looking for a small toy or treat for my large breed puppies and since we have lots of stuff at home already and they chew through things quickly I'm not looking to spend a lot. I also mention I have 2 of these dogs lol and the first 2 products she suggests are over $35.....that's almost $100 for a "little treat" for my dogs. I get they need the money but that's also why I took the time out of my day to drive farther to give my money to a small business vs petco. After that she gave a couple more suggestions with follow up comments suggesting my dogs may not like the products which was off putting. I was extremely disappointed with this customer service considering I made the drive here just for that experience. I would have had no problem spending the $100 there if she had suggested products I was actually looking for and didn't act like my walking in to shop at their business put a damper on her entire day. Needless to say I doubt I'll be making the drive out here again and if you were thinking about doing the same I'd advise you reconsider. read more

Yesterday very early I came in to ask about some treats for my 40lb mutt puppy. I was greeted as soon as I came inside by a young woman with black leggings and a petropolis shirt on- this felt very normal walking into this establishment in which I had heard about from one of my close friends so I decided to check it out. I asked the girl behind the counter for treat recommendations and she offered me many varieties such as single ingredient treats, cracker treats, and animal part treats like cow ears and rabbits feet. I was hesitant about the animal parts until the employee explained to me they were humanely sourced and they weren't going around killing bunnies. Any who, the young lady offered me assistance the entire 20 minutes I was there, I ended up buying some treats and some dog food for my dear Lucas to try. I want to say I don't try out new establishments very often, I was recommended this store by a woman in my book club and she said it was a great place to get affordable, high quality food and treats for your pets! I would also like to note that the inside of the store looks very electric, bright colors with a retro feel (it stands out from other businesses for its unique touch and incredible customer service). I came in to the store at 9:53am yesterday , their hours say they open at 10am so when I asked the girl behind the counter why they were open early she said she had gotten there at 9:40ish and was already done so there was no reason not to open the door for their valued customers to get out of the Saturday morning cold air. I'm pretty old standing at almost 60 years old with arthritis. When the girl behind the counter was done checking ringing my stuff up she offered to carry it out to my car for me too! I was so enchanted by the kindness and helpfulness I was met with while shopping at Petropolis. The girl who helped me, her name is Siena and she is the most darling girl! if you're ever in the Camarillo area and need a great place to get high quality food and treats for your animals, petropolis is the place to be! i will be visiting again very soon! read more

Shawna is incredibly helpful! She is so sweet, always has different things for me to try (whether from her shop or somewhere else), and really cares about both her dog and human customers. All the staff really love animals and just want to help. They have so many products and plenty with limited ingredients which is great for dogs with allergies. I stopped in Petropolis to pick up a small bag of Canidae to tide us over until our autoshipment from Chewy arrived. I checked their website to be sure they carry it (yay, they do) and made the short jaunt from home to pick it up. It is a tiny shop, but packed full of great quality food and other pet supplies. The lady at the counter was on the phone when I arrived, but as soon as she hung up, she welcomed me and offered her assistance. I'd already found what I came for, so I didn't need help. I hoped their price would be within a few dollars of the Chewy price so I could justify cancelling my subscription and supporting a local business. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to justify cancelling my subscription/delivery of the dog food from Chewy because Petropolis charges more for a 24 lb. bag than Chewy does for a 44 lb. bag. My mouth was gaping at the price. But maybe they have to have such a huge markup to support all the rescue/shelter work they do, which is wonderful. So, overall, Petropolis will be my go-to for times like this when I need a tide-over or something urgently, and I may someday try the grooming salon or the Santa photos, but for now, my bank account demands that I stay with the online food shipments. read more

The cutest pet shop in Camarillo. I came in to buy supplies for my Frenchies 2nd birthday (Yes I'm a crazy dog mom) and I was immediately greeted by a sweet young woman who was working there. She gave my boys the cutest stickers as we looked around for our dogs treats. We left with cookies, treats and a dog toy. The prices are very fair and the quality is one you can't beat. I will definitely be back for all my frenchies needs! It's nice to support local businesses! read more
