My dog hates being brushed, and I had no idea I'd been using the wrong type. Lydia clearly explained why the brush I had wasn't ideal and walked me through other options and why they'd work better. I can happily say that, for the first time, my dog didn't mind being brushed and was actually calm! She also pointed out a few treats she thought my dog would like based on what I picked out. They were in a different section I would have otherwise totally missed. She even shared a helpful resource for learning more about my dog's breeds. You can tell she genuinely cares. My wife and I visited Colony Cats, Cat Welfare, and Cozy Cat Cottage to name a few. With all of the wonderful potential fur kids we saw we didn't see the one that we just connected with. We decided to go to Pets Without Parents as it was a rescue that we had not been to before and it was just down Indianola from our house. We had no expectations when we went to PWP other than we knew that they were a smaller rescue that was located in an older house. When we walked in we were pleasantly greeted by a volunteer and showed where the hand sanitizer (so that we could clean our hands between kitties). The individual who greeted us was figuratively knee deep in cleaning dog cages but, she was friendly and responsive when we had questions. There, in the center cage on the bottom was this beautiful kitten! Both of our hearts melted when we saw him, as he was nearly the spitting image of the cat we had just lost. The individual working the shelter that day let us know that those two kittens were meant to be picked up today by the person that was adopting them. Our hearts collectively dropped as then we knew that of the cats at PWP, these were the ones that we shouldn't get attached. We petted all the cats that we could, well save the brand new box of feral kittens! I am sure that in no time they'll be adoptable little fluffs! Despite not seeing a cat/kitten we connected to we decided to put in an application. The application was very similar to others you might see when adoption a new animals. Asked for references, job information, current pet information, veterinary contact, as well as things the adopter's view on declawing. Much to my surprise I received a call the very next day from the PWP shelter manager! I thought that the call may have been to clarify the application we had submitted but, it was not. The adoption on the beautiful kitten (that was meant to go home the day before) had fallen through. They wanted to know if we would like to come meet the little we had seen the day before. We quickly (and gleefully) went back to PWP to officially meet & pet this kitten. Cat carrier in tow, of course, just in case! If you adopt through PWP you get a wellness check up card for use at the vet where the animal has received their vaccines & spay/neuter. We took this offer so that we could get our new little friend checked out before we established him at our vet. This was great as he had a cold (that they were treating him for) and we were able to proceed to the next step in treatment, an antibiotic shot to help knock out the remainder of the kitty cold. The adoption contract at PWP is more heavily worded than others might be. There is a provision in it where if the contract is broken that PWP can seek money from the adopter who has broken the contract. It seems to me that this is included to bring home the gravity that is the responsibility of adopting a furkid. Oh, and I can verify that the folks at PWP do check references, which is great since they are working to place pets in well suited homes. P.S. Pets Without Parents is loud. With the pupsters looking for a new home in the adjacent room, any kitten/cat adopted from these guys will likely be a-okay with loud sounds and barking dogs. Train tracks also run right next door to the rescue. P.P.S. Our new kitten is fitting in purrfectly at home.

To add…read morecontext, one of my Chihuahuas died on Tuesday so I took his brother who is depressed and not eating or drinking there. He weighs three pounds and upon us walking in, a girl helping another family, rushed up to me and repeatedly expressed that he couldn't be in the store without a leash. I looked at my 3 pound Chihuahua in my arms and I looked at her. I left immediately. I completely understand policy, but even if he had a leash on, I would not let him walk on the floor, but the way she approached me was ridiculous. With that level of customer service in that area, they won't be open long.

I'm talking about a favorite pet speciality shop, Captivating Canines. (See pictures) For about a year we'd noticed that the store was no longer at the corner of Main St. and Westerville in downtown Westerville. We were saddened to see it go because it had been a favorite shop to pick up unique Christmas and birthday gifts for pet owner friends and family. So, when we walked out the back door of Old Bag of Bones, we could see this new shop and decided to check it out. Ron, the new owner had bought the store but relocated just a short distance down Main St. Although he told me he wasn't a huge "BUCKEYE" fan, I was willing to forgive him of that small indiscretion as we continued to talk about the store and new inventory he had on display. He was very gracious and allowed us to walk around and take pictures of him and specialized, fun merchandise he had in the store to share with you. It is a very relaxed environment so you can casually take your time to look around. Many items are marked down 50%. I was equally impressed and appreciative that the shop was designed to be handicap friendly with ample aisle space that allowed me to take my walker to any place I wanted to go.

Every time we go in Captivating Canines, the owner is so friendly and helpful. We have a puppy and go there for most of his basic needs and some more we didn't know about. Today we had to get his second collar and a new harness. They have a great selection of bright and colorful and fun designed collars and harnesses. We always come away from there happy and in a good mood. Such a sweet little place. It's fun to shop in and not overwhelming, like the big pet supply stores. Definitely make a stop, it's fun just to stroll and I guarantee you'll find something unique!

As I was checking our mini golden in another dog came in behind us and took a poop in the floor and no one came to clean it. I remember thinking that poor baby might be sick and probably shouldn't be here. Fast forward a couple days and they began calling my emergency contact because our little girl was sick with something intestinal! I thought it was just related to the food they were giving her since it was a different brand. Our emergency contact lived 3 hours away and we were on a cruise. So she decided to wait until next day and if it wasn't better she would go get her. After a trip to vet we found out it wasn't food related but an intestinal virus that she caught and now she passed it on to her little dog that got very sick. After vet bills, paying for them to board, and expenses of emergency contact I spent more on our pooch than our cruise. I would not recommend using this place. I wish I would have gone with my gut when I saw the other dog poop. Needless to say, I'll be looking at a different option for boarding in the future.
