Valentine's day pictures for Buckeye Bassett Hound at Mutts & Co.
Tammy A.

Who is that paw-rcious dog in these photos pictured for Mutts and Company? None other than my Bella boo. I heard about an event to support Bulldogs and was all about giving back to my community with pictures of Bella. The proceeds of Bella's pictures went to help animals in shelters and animal organizations that really need help. I'm all about helping rescues and helping animals find their "fur-ever homes." Mutts and Company of Upper Arlington was so gracious to lend their store space to let photographer Renee Needham take Valentine's Day photos of the pups. The store is big and clean and also has pet grooming services located in the back of the store. Although it's not the most ideal location for me, it's still nice to have it around for those who need a pet store like this for their pet care.

This is the email I sent to them on 6/22/25, regarding an experience the week prior. I never heard…read moreanything back from grooming: I feel that I need to reach out to you regarding the experience I had last week. I brought in my two English labs, Amber and Honey Bee, for nail trim and dremel. They are 4yo and 9yo, respectively. I have taken them multiple places for nail trims and there has never been any issue with them. Monday I was concerned when the person only took Amber back alone, then when it took nearly 10 minutes and the person working the desk went back "to help her." I could hear her yelping. I probably should have left with Honey Bee when Amber came back to me, but I had already paid, and quite frankly, was shocked when they said she didn't like the dremel. Honey Bee also took awhile, apparently she was also "quicked" at least 2 times. When she came out she was very gimpy on her back paw and continued to lick it when she got home. To make all of this worse, when she brought Honey Bee out she apologized and then said that she "wasn't a professional." I expect that when I am paying $50 (and I always tip well, even that day) for my dogs to have their nails taken care of (typically a 10 minute total experience that does not involve them getting injured) I am paying for professional services. I had called ahead to see if a groomer were still there and I was told that "they could do their nails." I specifically asked for a groomer! Now I'm worried that my dogs will have issues getting their nails trimmed because someone injured them who should not have even been working on them. I had to wait to address this issue because I was so upset. My husband was livid! He had bought a dremel for me to learn to do their nails, but I was afraid of hurting them so I continued to pay for their nails. I'm concerned to see how they do the next time they need their nails trimmed, but it won't be at your location. For the sake of all dogs, don't let people trim nails who aren't professionals.

GROOMING - Horrifying Experience…read more Took my dog in to get groomed today, she was badly matted but Petco has always been able to groom her with her matted fur. I got a call half way through the appointment saying they couldnt finish her because her matting was so bad. I was understanding and felt horrible. When I picked her up she was crying and had cuts all over her legs. There was fur coming off her and huge chunks of hair hanging off her body. I understand that you cant do a job because of the matting, but the condition I received her in left me sobbing in the car when I saw her and the pain and suffering she went through. Please please please dont come here if your dog has any matting, they do not know hot to handle matting or when to say no or stop before it gets too bad. She has gotten lots of treats and pets while I figure out what to do with her since the vet is booked.

However, I made an exception this time because one of my dogsitting clients takes her dogs here. Twice I've watched her dogs after they've been groomed (siberian huskies). Not only do they look nice right away and weeks afterwards, but the client raved about one particular groomer for the care taken with the older dog who has arthritis. I know she doesn't leave her dogs to just anyone. I drove by a few days before to see the setup. It's in a dedicated space away from PetSmart so the staff can focus only on the animals being groomed. From what I could see while waiting to be checked in and the wait to pick up my dog, they are doing things right. One person is manning the front desk taking calls, cashing people out, and sending out online invoices. So, first, I made the appointment online. I picked the day and could see which groomer was available and at what times. Pricing was very clear. There's the standard liability information disclaimer and several times was reminded to bring in the rabies information from the vet. When it was time for the appointment, we were the second dog waiting in line to be checked in. All check-in was done outside of the lobby area. The groomer reviewed what needed to be done with the dog, and listened very patiently to my tale about how my dog had been going to groomers for years but was nervous going in so I didn't know if that was going to impact how she behaved, etc. The expectation was clearly set on how long it would take (the furminator package takes longer), and that before my dog was ready, an invoice would be sent to me to pay so everything could be as contact free as possible. It wasn't long before closing time and I hadn't received an invoice yet so I called to check on when my dog would be ready. The receptionist answered the phone and said she would check with the groomer who was with another dog while mine was drying. I was able to hear most, but not all of the conversation, and it was relayed to me perfectly! The receptionist said she'd send me an invoice and told me when to be there to pickup my dog. Within moments I had a text message with the link for payment. When I arrived for pickup, I waited outside of my dog's view but could still her body. There was a mirror on the wall that allowed me to see my dog's head. When ready, the groomer brought my dog to me and gave me a report on how things had gone. She usually provides a written report but didn't have time which was fine with me. The groomer had stayed after closing time to properly finish up the grooming package. I wasn't going to ask her to write everything down. 1. She told me about the good behavior my dog exhibited which reinforced that my dog had been groomed before and knew what was generally expected. 2. She told me about the behavior my dog exhibited when uncomfortable with the belly brushing or the ear cleaning. 3. Let me know that I should keep an eye on the ear that was particularly dirty and was uncomfortable for my dog as it could be the beginning of an undetected ear infection. 4. Told me to call ahead and bring the dog back the next day if the chest hair was shaggy because it didn't have quite enough time to fully dry while she was rebrushing it. 5. Set the expectation that there would be slightly more shedding the next few days due to the grooming process. My word. This is more information than I've gotten anytime I've taken a dog to a dedicated groomer before and the best customer service I've ever received. Obviously they love the dogs and my groomer is a superstar!

It took us 5 hours at the vet, plus from 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM because they did not call and tell me what happened. I had to investigate and go down and insist on picking her up before they told me what happened. She had been bleeding for some time, it stopped (they said), then picked up again. I have no idea just how long this was going on before I showed up. My original appointment was with the manager, then I discovered she gave another groomer my dog instead. My main concern other than the fact that it even happened although I know it was not on purpose is that I was not notified when it first happened and the time dragged on and on until I just knew something must have been wrong because it does not take almost 5 hours to groom a dog who is in good grooming shape. When I called to see what was taking so long they told me it would be another 5 or 10 minutes (they were obviously still trying to stop the bleed), and I drove down anyway and even 20 minutes later when I told them I was in the car waiting on my girl, they finally came out to tell me the problem. I had them drive her to the vet with one holding her putting pressure on the wound and I followed - thank God it was only a few miles away. I am now on the phone with corporate awaiting information on how to get them to pay for the vet's follow up visit today because they are not answering my call nor did they respond to my email yesterday letting them know there will be another payment due. Overall very bad service and dangerous to my girl - not so much because of the accidental cut but because of the inability to come forth when it happened and deal with it like it should have been dealt with - IMMEDIATELY!
