Due to our cat of 9.5 year's sudden passing we were recently looking for a new kitten/cat to fill the big cat shoes that were left behind. My wife and I visited Colony Cats, Cat Welfare, and Cozy Cat Cottage to name a few. With all of the wonderful potential fur kids we saw we didn't see the one that we just connected with. We decided to go to Pets Without Parents as it was a rescue that we had not been to before and it was just down Indianola from our house. We had no expectations when we went to PWP other than we knew that they were a smaller rescue that was located in an older house. When we walked in we were pleasantly greeted by a volunteer and showed where the hand sanitizer (so that we could clean our hands between kitties). The individual who greeted us was figuratively knee deep in cleaning dog cages but, she was friendly and responsive when we had questions. There, in the center cage on the bottom was this beautiful kitten! Both of our hearts melted when we saw him, as he was nearly the spitting image of the cat we had just lost. The individual working the shelter that day let us know that those two kittens were meant to be picked up today by the person that was adopting them. Our hearts collectively dropped as then we knew that of the cats at PWP, these were the ones that we shouldn't get attached. We petted all the cats that we could, well save the brand new box of feral kittens! I am sure that in no time they'll be adoptable little fluffs! Despite not seeing a cat/kitten we connected to we decided to put in an application. The application was very similar to others you might see when adoption a new animals. Asked for references, job information, current pet information, veterinary contact, as well as things the adopter's view on declawing. Much to my surprise I received a call the very next day from the PWP shelter manager! I thought that the call may have been to clarify the application we had submitted but, it was not. The adoption on the beautiful kitten (that was meant to go home the day before) had fallen through. They wanted to know if we would like to come meet the little we had seen the day before. We quickly (and gleefully) went back to PWP to officially meet & pet this kitten. Cat carrier in tow, of course, just in case! If you adopt through PWP you get a wellness check up card for use at the vet where the animal has received their vaccines & spay/neuter. We took this offer so that we could get our new little friend checked out before we established him at our vet. This was great as he had a cold (that they were treating him for) and we were able to proceed to the next step in treatment, an antibiotic shot to help knock out the remainder of the kitty cold. The adoption contract at PWP is more heavily worded than others might be. There is a provision in it where if the contract is broken that PWP can seek money from the adopter who has broken the contract. It seems to me that this is included to bring home the gravity that is the responsibility of adopting a furkid. Oh, and I can verify that the folks at PWP do check references, which is great since they are working to place pets in well suited homes. P.S. Pets Without Parents is loud. With the pupsters looking for a new home in the adjacent room, any kitten/cat adopted from these guys will likely be a-okay with loud sounds and barking dogs. This shelter needs more attention, not only for the pets but for the people caring for them! We wanted a buddy for our current cat since we sadly lost our boy of 17 years, and decided to take a trip to PWP. I was taken aback by the fact that it was in a house but when I walked in and met the people inside they were really helpful and friendly. You can tell they have a lot on their hands, and just because it doesn't look like an established shelter doesn't mean that these pets and the hard work of the people/volunteers aren't worthy of attention. These types of shelters are in need of your donations and your time and if you have the means to contribute to either of those I encourage you to do so! Their adoption fees are very reasonable considering they have already been spayed/neutered and treated for other various things. They stand by their mission of no-kill and spend a good majority of their day making sure these animals are fed and let out and loved. They could give a pretty good overview of what pets would fit with your current living situation and preferences. Yes, some shelters max out of room, I see some reviews on here stating that their surrender wasn't obeyed. That's a reasonable excuse to be bothered by the customer service but do not let that prevent you from giving them a chance. It's unfortunate they may have filled up between that time you adopted and needed to surrender, or just need to surrender in general, but if that's the case be diligent and make sure the pet you choose is for you and FOREVER Overall, we had a wonderful experience and are happy to support a local no-kill shelter, and even happier to help at least one animal find a forever home. Please consider going here if you're going to be adopting a pet! Also PSA: yes it is fairly loud in there because the dogs get excited and want to see who just stepped in the door. The other animals seemed unbothered by this, and the dogs will calm down if you step into the other main room to have conversation. That could be an added bonus for those of you who may be taking an animal home to a louder household, as they will be somewhat used to it. AND yes, it smells like animals when you walk in... because there's plenty of animals in there... so suck it up!!! All the crates were well kept as I was making my way around and greeting everyone. Cats pee, and the pee stinks. Especially when there's 15 cats in the same vicinity. Doesn't mean they're unclean or unkempt!! read more

Pets Without Parents is a non-profit that is located on a side street in a house. The place is falling apart and reeks of urine but the point of this place is not to be over looked! They are a non kill shelter and have a ton of animals who are dying for forever homes. Their adoption process is simple and well worth putting an app in. Most animals, it seems, have an application put in for them but a lot of times they are rejected. So put your app in and wait & see. If you get approved but the animal you wanted gets adopted then you have your choice of anyone next time you come in and you don't have to apply again. The kitten condo is upstairs; there's two rooms so don't over look it! The 'kitten' condo is full of adults who are in need of loving homes. I think it's worth it to add that they have special's going on in Oct $50 normally for an adult cat is now only $25. Also, the condo rooms are free range so the cats get to walk around and play, something I don't take lightly since it's key after you adopt one for them to be socialized. On the main floor they have their dogs and cats and some kittens. Most of the kittens had a few apps in for them but we were told more kittens come in all the time. We intend to return in a little while and check out the new ones. The people here are very nice too. They are always busy and when we first showed up no one was around to greet us. We just weren't sure if we needed to sign in (like the Humane soc does) or if we could just go and walk around. Overall a great place to go if youre looking to adopt an animal. STAY AWAY!! I got a cat from them two years ago. They made me sign a contract saying that if I ever had to get rid of him, I would bring him back to them so that he wouldn't be euthanized. Now I need to find a home for my cat since I'm moving to Europe and I haven't been able to find a home for him. I called them FOUR times, left THREE messages, and no one ever called me back! Could their service be any worse? Yes, in fact, it can. I finally got a hold of them today, and told them my situation (for the fourth time). They said they were full so they won't take any more cats anytime soon. Then they suggested I take him to another shelter. "All right, but they don't euthanize, do they?" I asked. "Actually, yes they do" was the reply. So, in sum. They have awful customer service. They fail to honor contracts. They claim to be a no-kill place AND YET THEY SUGGEST I KILL MY CAT. Worst. Pets Without Parents is a non-profit and no kill shelter. Which is the exact reason I chose it. I know the Humane Center doesn't share Pets Without Parent's views of sanctity of animal life, but it gets more traffic and I figure those animals have more of a chance. Plus I always root for the underdog, or cat in this situation. I have to admit I am at heart a dog person. However city living doesn't afford me the type of home a large breed dog would need. So I decided to go cat, and save my dog dreams for a later larger home time. PWP is small and the staff knows each animal by name. This is impressive when you see all the animals there are to know. The kittens were sectioned off and hanging out in their own little area. I chose an older kitten again rooting for the underdog. Not as little and cute as the babies, I chose a six month old with spunk. The shelter has sitting rooms where you and your pet can really bond. Scared by all the noise but excited to be out of her cage I decided I wanted to take Nipper home. Not yet. At PWP they do a series of background checks. I had to wait while they contacted my landlord and made sure I wasn't a felon. They also spayed my cat for a low fee. I was annoyed by this delay but also glad this shelter takes the lives of their animals so seriously. Once I had passed the tests and taken Nipper home I received a follow up call twice a month for two months. They really wanted to make sure that Nipper and I were bonding well. Everything ended happily ever after and I would recommend this shelter. They have a great, informative website with lots of pictures. They also have a staff that clearly cares. If you are ready for a pet don't buy it from a pet store. Be a hero and rescue an animal from Pets Without Parents. You will be glad you did. read more

I have volunteered here and visited many pups in this location. They work as hard as they can with as much as they can to save animals from being euthenized in public kennels. They will also take toys or food that your animal doesn't like. They work on all donations and are appreciative to those that can help also. They truely love the animals and have saved many lives. The house is an animal house, so of course it isn't going to be clean like a humans. Please don't be detered and save an animal! They will thank you :) My dog is from the streets (saved) and he is even better for it. The first couple of months or to a year it will be some work but so it having a puppy. I actually think it is less work then a puppy. read more

The staff/workers are very friendly and nice. Fair prices and ample street parking. The smell of animal does hit you the moment you walk in the door. It's a small shelter but, the pets do have enough space. Out of the handful of times I've been here, no one told me there was more cats upstairs. I did adopt a pet, that unfortunately didn't work out with my other pets. When I came back to return the pet. My refund fee was never sent back to me, even though I was reassured that it would be sent to me in the next week or two. Two months go by -no check. So, I had to call and talk to someone in charge. They got it straitened out right away and I got my refund check within the week. read more

After an awful experience, we will never visit this place again. When we asked if we could socialize with the dogs outside of their cages, we were told, "You can't do that unless you're a volunteer." How are you expecting people to adopt a dog that they haven't interacted with? We had to reach our fingers through the cage to touch them. There were other dogs stowed away in an "off-limits" room. When we asked if we could look at them, the response was, "We don't let people see them. They're excitable." Um, aren't you running a rescue shelter? You should expect barking. Loud dogs are worthy of being seen too! The staff was apathetic and seemed disinterested in adopting out their animals. We may as well have been invisible. Great place to find a new furever friend in the Columbus area! They are a true no-kill shelter. No-kill means they don't euthanize for space and they keep the animals until they are adopted and find a loving home! They are selective in their adoption process, which is extremely important. Adopting an animal is a decision that shouldn't be taken lightly and they take their side of it seriously! Also, if you can't adopt, you can volunteer in the shelter or help foster animals! Was looking to give some dogs and cats some loving and this was the worst experience I've had at a shelter. Online their hours say 12-9 pm every day but when we got to the house there was a sign door that said Monday's they weren't open until 4:00. We arrived at 4:30 and it still wasn't open. Went to get food and came back about 15 minutes later and the lady who was there (finally) said that she had to leave in about 10 minutes but another worker would be there in 30 minutes, so we would have had to wait longer. The second you walk in the door the smell of cat and dog feces and urine is hard to get over. Of course the pets are adorable and worth hanging out with and adopting but a couple were stepping in their own messes and honesty sad to look at. It's hard not to support a shelter but this one definitely needs some help. read more

We got our pup from PWP in 11/2013. They are a non-profit, no kill shelter. That was an important thing for us. The staff was great to deal with and very friendly. They cat tested our dog to make sure she would get along with our cat, which we greatly appreciated. The application process was pretty simple, and we appreciate the fact that they do a little research before approving the adoption. I have, and will continue to, refer folks to PWP. read more

We adopted our dog from this shelter in November 2013 and had an amazing experience. I see some folks are concerned with the application process, but ours was seamless. I get why they would not "hold" a pet for someone while going through the process, but we had no concerns. We applied, they did a background check, we got our pup. They answered the million questions we had, they help cat-test her to ensure our cat would be safe, and they worked around our schedule. Zero complaints. We continue to support them through donations as we can and will continue into the future. We have recommended them to friends and family and will encourage others to adopt from them. read more

Pets Without Parents is a WONDERFUL establishment... The shelter is located in an old house, with the dogs and kittens downstairs and two cat rooms upstairs where the cats are free to roam. The staff keeps it very clean and the animals are well-cared for. There are almost always puppies and ALWAYS lots of kittens, as well as older cats and dogs. I got my dog there and it only cost 160 dollars, which included the cost of spaying/neutering, his first set of shots, and deworming. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a pet, or just for a place to go and visit the animals. read more

I was interested in getting a pet from a no-kill shelter, so I decided to "take a look" at the cats at PWP. Obviously, I fell in love with a cat that day and decided to adopt her. The staff at PWP clearly care about all of the pets, and are interested in finding forever homes for them. When I asked about cats, the person working immediately rattled off the names/sizes/ages of all the cats in the shelter - no small feat, considering that there were 15-20 felines there at that time. When I found the kitty I wanted to adopt, they had me fill out a lengthy questionnaire and called references and my landlord. They also got me up to date on Sesame's health situation, and how to clean her ears. These people care deeply about animals and respect the lives of every pet that enters their doors. I am happy to donate money/supplies to them whenever I can, because they work so hard to keep animals alive, safe, and to find them homes where they can be happy. read more

My wife and I got our dog from PWP. We love our dog (and obviously our affection for our pet has nothing to do with PWP). As a result, I'm hesitant to give PWP a bad review because it's hard to fault them for working with so little. That said, the house they use is kind of gross and smells like cat piss. When we first got her, our dog was sick with bordatella (dog pneumonia) and run down. However, after talking with the staff (mainly volunteers from OSU) you get the impression that the only reason PWP is run down is a lack of money (rather than a genuine desire to help animals find a loving home). That said, get your pet from PWP because they need the money and donate to them because they really do care about getting their pets into a loving home. read more

I also agree that the adoption system is flawed and find it inappropriately limiting warm, responsible families from adopting their future family members. I was denied an application because I couldn't provide records that the two other cats, also living at my 5,000 square-foot residence, were spayed/ neutered and because their shots were less than one year overdue. My strike one was that I couldn't prove the other 10-year old cats were spayed/ neutered and I would like Pets Without Parents to consider other ways to provide this information so that families could adopt a pet. For example, in my situation, our cats have gone through other hands before being at their forever home and we do not have their original spay/ neuter records. One cat, however, I do know where it was spayed, but this was 10 years ago at an out-of-town facility. Even human medical records might not even be kept for over 2-3 years, depending on state law, thus it is very difficult that this facility would still even have her records. Furthermore, it is very difficult to demonstrate a cat being spayed/ neutered, other than an animal being "nicer" (personal conversation with veterinary clinic 6/8/15) or subjected to expensive medical imaging where the cat would have to be under general anesthesia in order to even tolerate the procedure. Subjecting an pet to medical imaging just to prove their fertility status would inappropriately subject a family to unnecessary medical costs. Thus, prohibiting me from adopting a cat because I could understandably not provide spay/ neuter records is far too restrictive. My strike two was in regards to the other cats' immunization schedule. The one cat's shots were one month overdue and the other cat had her shots in 2014. Not too bad, right? Sometimes we as humans even forget when our routine immunizations are due and probably don't "purr"fectly keep track of our records. The records are probably somewhere in our house, only to be found when you were least expecting them to pop up. Furthermore, with the American health care system forcing us to change providers based on which insurer our employer carries and because we have no uniform documentation system (unlike many European countries), our ability to easily access our medical information is further restricted. Thus, it is severely impressive if a pet parent is able to furnish their pet's medical records from birth. Pets Without Parents seems to only want to adopt out pets to the probably 0.5% of pet parents who are able to provide these pristine records. Nevertheless, I thought I could easily offer to take the cats in to get updated on their routine vaccines. I thought with a new loved one coming into the house, this would be a great time to get the family up to date. However, when I offered to update the cats' shots, I was told that my "application would probably be denied anyway" because I didn't keep their shots 100% up to date. I clearly think this is situation is a shame and inappropriately limits potentially warm households from adopting pets. I would invite the director and staff to review their adoption policies so as to not turn off households from adopting from their organization. In addition, I would also invite other potential families to be aware of their practices in anticipation of adopting their own future loved ones, and possibly turn to other organizations with less inappropriately restrictive adoption policies. read more
