I've been supporting Cat Welfare for more than 20 years, but I became a customer today. After losing one of our senior cats, we decided to stop here and look for a new cat. Like many things, covid has made this process more difficult, which is bad news for the cats. We had to make an appointment everywhere we wanted to go and this was our first. I downloaded their application and emailed it to them. We were in their system and verified our information. We got a call within 30 minutes and an appointment within a couple of hours. It was a nice visit and we found a pair of littermates and have them home with us now. Working at home was a great time to break in new kittens! Hard to find any good in this dam pandemic.

I am thankful that Cat Welfare has a way to adopt awesome cats. Several years ago, my cat, Zeke died. I was looking for a new kitty to adopt. I was overwhelmed with the number of choices but my heart was set on a young adult. I met a volunteer who steered me towards the most loving cat that was looking for a home.Zen was about 3 years old and had been a feral cat at one time in his life. He has been with me for 5 years and I him . Zen was an amazing choice and I will not hesitate to adopt from Cat Welfare again in the future.

So, this is my favorite rescue as I have had the good fortune to adopt 2 cats from here over the years, one of which being a multi-point special needs cat. I see some negative reviews here which I wanted to touch base on... I am a frequent visitor to get my cat cuddles so I am aware of how truly, deeply invested all of the staff & volunteers are in all of the cats in their care. For all the cats that are there, everyone knows each of the cats by their names, names which were thoughtfully given to each cat based on either a personality trait or some other distinguishable characteristic. There are people who have volunteered there consistently for decades which I think also speaks to the reputation & work that this fantastic organization offers. So it should come as no surprise that they want what is best for all of the felines & may very well error on the side of caution if they see any red flags - maybe a cat who has come from an abusive situation that would do best in a home without children. They do their due diligence to make sure that once the release these precious animals to the adoptee that it will be what is best for everyone. I had to go through a lengthy process to adopt Ray Ray & I wouldn't have had it any other way. He was worth every step & I am grateful for the care & attention the staff gave in working with me through the process. They are doing important, life-saving work on a daily basis.

Cat Welfare is a good place to adopt from! We had a pretty good experience as it was our first time adopting. Most of the people we talked to were very nice and helpful but there was 2 people who really bothered us. We had said multiple times that this was the cat we wanted and they kept directing us towards other cats which is weird when she was being so sweet and showing her belly to us when they said she hadn't done that with anyone before. They also said things like "she won't be a lap cat" and "she probably won't be settled or comfortable with you guys for 1-2 months" which we didn't care, we just wanted to give the cat a home and give them all the love. Other than some comments and unneeded direction away from the cat we wanted it was a great experience. The place is well kept and the cats seem to be well taken care of. Our cats previous name was "Azula" and we changed it to "Cali." She's the sweetest, most cuddly, and talkative cat ever :) We are so happy!!

Ask the Community - Cat Welfare Association

Does the cat welfare society offer bus passes for the cats? Job placement? GED programs? Pregnancy testing?

Actually Amy B., they don't offer any of those things, at least not at this time due to budget cuts. Cat Welfare is more of an immediate needs type of organization for down on their luck cats. As you might be familiar, cats have a hard time… Read more

I have a feral young female cat in my condo areas that lives under a neighbors deck. She has about 6 kittens and is not use to humans. Would the Cat Welfare place be willing to take them if I could catch them?

I am quite familiar with Cat Welfare. I suggest calling them to discuss the situation as I don't know the particulars about intake. They go above and beyond for our furry friends and may be able to assist.

My wife and I visited Colony Cats, Cat Welfare, and Cozy Cat Cottage to name a few. With all of the wonderful potential fur kids we saw we didn't see the one that we just connected with. We decided to go to Pets Without Parents as it was a rescue that we had not been to before and it was just down Indianola from our house. We had no expectations when we went to PWP other than we knew that they were a smaller rescue that was located in an older house. When we walked in we were pleasantly greeted by a volunteer and showed where the hand sanitizer (so that we could clean our hands between kitties). The individual who greeted us was figuratively knee deep in cleaning dog cages but, she was friendly and responsive when we had questions. There, in the center cage on the bottom was this beautiful kitten! Both of our hearts melted when we saw him, as he was nearly the spitting image of the cat we had just lost. The individual working the shelter that day let us know that those two kittens were meant to be picked up today by the person that was adopting them. Our hearts collectively dropped as then we knew that of the cats at PWP, these were the ones that we shouldn't get attached. We petted all the cats that we could, well save the brand new box of feral kittens! I am sure that in no time they'll be adoptable little fluffs! Despite not seeing a cat/kitten we connected to we decided to put in an application. The application was very similar to others you might see when adoption a new animals. Asked for references, job information, current pet information, veterinary contact, as well as things the adopter's view on declawing. Much to my surprise I received a call the very next day from the PWP shelter manager! I thought that the call may have been to clarify the application we had submitted but, it was not. The adoption on the beautiful kitten (that was meant to go home the day before) had fallen through. They wanted to know if we would like to come meet the little we had seen the day before. We quickly (and gleefully) went back to PWP to officially meet & pet this kitten. Cat carrier in tow, of course, just in case! If you adopt through PWP you get a wellness check up card for use at the vet where the animal has received their vaccines & spay/neuter. We took this offer so that we could get our new little friend checked out before we established him at our vet. This was great as he had a cold (that they were treating him for) and we were able to proceed to the next step in treatment, an antibiotic shot to help knock out the remainder of the kitty cold. The adoption contract at PWP is more heavily worded than others might be. There is a provision in it where if the contract is broken that PWP can seek money from the adopter who has broken the contract. It seems to me that this is included to bring home the gravity that is the responsibility of adopting a furkid. Oh, and I can verify that the folks at PWP do check references, which is great since they are working to place pets in well suited homes. P.S. Pets Without Parents is loud. With the pupsters looking for a new home in the adjacent room, any kitten/cat adopted from these guys will likely be a-okay with loud sounds and barking dogs. Train tracks also run right next door to the rescue. P.P.S. Our new kitten is fitting in purrfectly at home.

I was given paperwork stating that Charlie was safe to be around children. Based on what ultimately occurred, I believe that paperwork was inadequate and misleading. At the time of adoption, Charlie was sent home on four Trazodone pills per day. I was told by the shelter's veterinarian Zac, that this medication was for depression and anxiety, and that it was okay to wean him off of the medication. When I followed that guidance and began tapering the medication, Charlie's behavior changed dramatically. He exhibited clear behavioral issues, became aggressive, and ultimately bit my daughter. Based on how quickly his behavior escalated once the medication was reduced, I believe the Trazodone may have been used to mask underlying aggression rather than disclose a serious behavioral risk to a household with a child. The police were called immediately. When officers contacted Franklin County Animal Control, the response was deeply concerning. The agency argued with the responding police officer and initially refused to send anyone out, even after being informed that a dog had bitten a child. Only after a supervisor was requested and the officer insisted that the dog be picked up immediately did they take action. This situation was mishandled at every level--behavioral disclosure, medication guidance, paperwork accuracy, and emergency response. Families rely on shelters to be honest and transparent so they can make informed decisions that protect their children and homes. That did not happen here. Charlie was euthanized. Based on this experience, I strongly do not recommend using this shelter.

The process was unnecessarily long, complicated, and frustrating from start to end. We were asked to fill out a form and provide an excessive amount of personal information, only for them to reach out 2 days later to schedule a meeting... which they canceled. Not once. Not twice. Three times. By the fourth attempt, we honestly should've taken that as a sign. When we finally made it to the Zoom call, we mentioned that we already have a cat, which we thought would help speed things up. Somehow, it did the opposite. We were told we had to submit our cat's vaccination records, and IF AND ONLY IF those were approved, we might be allowed to meet the kitten two weeks later, since she was in a foster home. At that point, we were done. We didn't send anything. Instead, we drove straight to the Humane Society. And what a difference. We walked in, met the most adorable kitten on the planet, petted her, filled out some basic paperwork, and were treated like normal, trustworthy people, not suspects under investigation. We walked out with our kitten in under two hours. This place was completely unserious, wildly inefficient, and a total waste of time.
