I really like Pete's. It's comfy, quick, unpretentious, and usually tasty. Most of the food is quite average, but the service and inexpensiveness make up for that. Also, average food for a good price isn't always easy to come by in DC, so I really appreciate it. If you like asian vegetarian food, get the veggie special. I almost always get that when I'm here. It always has a vegetable, a starch, and a tofu/bean curd of some type. The ingredients change frequently, but it's very tasty, sometimes divine. Usually go to this place for some good breakfast or lunch. Last time I went they had a good Malaysian Curry with meat, rice and vegetables. It was well done, good spices, and pretty tasty. The service is pretty good with friendly waiters. Usually see the place busy during lunch and prices are not very expensive. The restaurant is more like a neighborhood diner type, with a long counter, and normal table and chair arrangement. It has its own charm. Horrible service and racist. I came in and i was seated next to three white people who came in 10 min after me. They all got their food very fast and i waited almost twenty minutes for food that takes five minutes to cook. I had to get the waitress attention and then ask was my food coming and then she pulled the ticket which was off to the side and gave it to the cook. I cancelled my order and paid for my coffee and COLD bacon. Also i saw her consistently checking on all the white customers and not me . This is disgraceful and disrespectful. My favorite place in DC to be a regular--the sweetest wait staff around. They remember our order every weekend, the service is super fast, and the prices are very reasonable. If you're staying on Cap HIll, you've got to go. They're only open for breakfast and lunch, but after many years as a cash-only, they go credit cards. read more

This place is one of the few that are open for an early breakfast (before 6:30am). I think that's what pushes it into the 3 star range. I was in the area and it came up for breakfast spots in the places app. The tackiest decor, the seating at the bar area smelled of wet rag (took me back to DC public schools caferterias, where they cleaned up with a used rag), and customer service was average (they did just enough as in took my order..they weren't really welcoming) but the food wasn't bad. One of few sit down breakfast options nearby, and clearly a neighborhood staple, but it didn't sit well with me. The managers yelled at their staff which I consider a big no-no anywhere, especially in front of guests. In spite of the scolding, there was confusion among the waiters as to who took my order and I sat trying to get someone's attention to order for at least 10 minutes, which was pretty outstanding considering the small size of the place. It's a simple, hidden away gem of a place you don't want to see be overrun by young upwardly mobile DC trendsetters converging to the SE. Thank good they don't serve craft beer yet. Great comfort food, simple and unpretentious. You can sit at Petes with total strangers and start up a conversation about anything. The place is family run, very friendly, and if you understand what they're saying, all the better. Kitschy Buddhas, Bottomless cups of coffee in mismatched cups, with a small greasy spoon ambiance (spoons really were not greasy). I can go there EARLY in the morning on the weekends to get breakfast or even a burger YES a burger. Which is great because a lot of places don't open until maybe 8am but you can bet a dollar they will be open. Easy to get to on The Hill, walking or driving. I absolutely love this place, and the people who work there. It's incredibly convenient for me to get to, as a Hill staffer, so it's one of my favorite places to buy lunch on days that I don't bring it with me. The food is good, solid American diner fare, though there are some Chinese items on the menu as well, which is kind of a fun option--I like being able to get a side order of spring rolls with my salad! Other go-to classics are the club sandwich combo, various burgers, etc. I also respect anyone who serves breakfast outside of "traditional" breakfast hours, and have definitely ordered an omelet for lunch at Pete's in the past. What really impresses me about Pete's is the service. Recently, I came in to order lunch and, it being a crazy busy day and my hands being full, I (stupidly) accidentally left a cashier's check on the counter while I was waiting for my order. Of course, I only realized what I had done later when I needed to drop the check off, and was filled with panic as I realized that Pete's had closed an hour before. I dashed over there, and peered in the door. One of their employees who was cleaning up noticed me, and, without even needing to ask me why I was there, walked over to the door with the check in her hand. Obviously, I thanked her profusely! The next time that I came in to order lunch, she jokingly told me not to leave any checks on the counter this time. I really will never forget the time they saved scatterbrained me from a potential disaster! So come for the food, but you'll probably appreciate the service, too. read more

Wholesome breakfast chow with VERY attentive service - my coffee did not get cold or empty the entire time. Great location for breakfast meeting on the Hill - "hello Mr. Chairman !" Although, get there early as it's not a large area - they do have additional outside (sidewalk) seating. Very prompt and friendly staff.
