After reading so many rave reviews and watching the famous Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Food show featuring Peter Chang, decided to drive 3 hours to have a nice, authentic Szechuan dinner with wife. Turned out to be one the worst dinners ever at a reputable Chinese restaurant. Completely shock by Peter Chang Restaurant in so many ways. Here they are, hope Peter Chang himself read this review. I'm a very unsatisfied and angry customer.
First, parking options are limited and overall horrible, no helpful signs anywhere, and the place is poorly lit during evening hours. Parking across the street at Food Lion would have been a better option in hindsight.
Building is old, untidy, and once inside, has the look of a run-down and cheap small town Chinese eatery masked by failed attempts at wall coverings, paint, and the entrance "bar" and cashier counter decorated with a few lonely wine bottles is but the only semblance of a reputable, authentic and classy gourmet restaurant. Just don't look around too much at the details, such as the route to the restrooms, which would immediately reveal a kind of backwater operation of this restaurant.
As we waited for service, a good 15 minutes, and then ordered, and waited, for more than 30 minutes, we saw that many customers don't seem to mind the above details or the quality of the food by their oohs and aahs, but as a person who knows good authentic Szechuan and Chinese food in general, Peter Chang is a huge disappointment. Here's what we ordered:
Scallion Bubble Pancake
Crispy Fried Pork Belly
Peter Chang's Duck in Stone Pot
Stir Fried Pork Intestine
The most disgusting Crispy Fried Pork Belly dish ever. First, what the Peter Chang kitchen cooked was cheap, thin slices of overdue bacon, dipped in batter and fried. Then toss in some dried pepper flakes, scallions, and of course lots of Szechuan peppercorn. In fact, perhaps to mask the smell of overdue bacon, the exhorborant amount of Szechuan peppercorn makes the dish impossible to eat without immediately numbing all your taste buds for at least an hour. After complaining to the waitress about the smell and excessive amount of peppercorn in the dish which makes it inedible, she took it back to the kitchen. Then, she came back and said that since we already ate some of it (duh, how would we know if it didn't taste right, at all), that we would have to pay for it. We never once said we wouldn't pay for it! We were just telling the Peter Chang kitchen that the dish was inedible. So, we told the waitress to take the dish back to the kitchen and have the chef eat it himself. No further response, and the dish of course remained on the bill without comment, explanation or apology.
Peter Chang's Duck in Stone Pot was not far off from the same disappointment. The dish looked presentable, as Peter Chang himself considered it one of his signature dishes, except not the one we had that evening. The duck was definitely leftover, dried, old duck because it has that musty, overly-microwaved meat smell, even with the sauce and other ingredients. The tofu skin was hard and looked like it was just haphazardly placed in the pot moments earlier. Just about the only thing that was edible were the mushrooms.
The Stir Fried Pork Intestine dish was equally disappointing. There's a difference between freshly sliced pork intestines and days old or months old, overcooked, and dried, frozen pork intestines. It was the latter, and the green peppers were not enough to mask the dish.
Lastly, the only thing that came close to the reputation of Peter Chang was the Scallion Bubble Pancake, and was the only dish we finished.
The answer was NO when the obviously embarrassed, yet annoyingly passive waitress asked if we wanted boxes to go. It was not her fault, and she deserved the tip, but the restaurant definitely does not deserve another visit, not only for their disregard for serving bad and possible unsafe food, but for their lack of customer service regarding food issues AND responsibilities to own up to those complaints.
I highly doubt it was Peter Chang in the kitchen that evening, but it still would not matter, as his name and reputation is on the line for every single dish they put out, every detail of a famed restaurant. More than disappointed. read more
