I was just in the store to buy a dog crate. Walked around couldn't find anyone to help. So I stood in line to ask the cashier if he could help me, or if he could call someone he said everyone must be on their break. So I started looking for the crates myself. I finally found them but their were other boxes in front of them so you couldn't get to them at all. Also finally found someone to help and asked for the cheapest one and all he does is look where I was looking and pointed to the only one he could see and said it must be that one. I also said went to your website and it said there was a medium one for $39.99 he proceeded to tell me the website is usually wrong and you probably didn't have it. One star for the price and that only. I made an appointment for my husky to get a wash, blow dry and brush. They told me not to bring my dog back because he was "aggressive" I've blown dried, washed, and brushed him myself and yeah he doesn't like the dryer but he's never been aggressive. I got him back and I can tell they didn't brush him AT ALL. The only reason why I took him to petco was because my groomer was booked. NEVER EVER WASTE YOUR MONEY AT THE GROOMER HERE. read more

Terrible service I bought a hamster from here and he is very very sick since I got him. He wasn't presenting signs when I got him but as soon as I took him home. He has had wet tail and other issues and I have tried multiple things to try and fix his wet tail but nothing works. I have been very pleased with the groomers at Petco. My little rescue dogs are not friendly with strangers, even our vets will muzzle my little girl. Surprisingly the Petco groomers found rather than clipping their nails, by using a grinder, my two little dogs stayed calm and happy, and they didn't bother using the muzzle I brought. I prefer this Petco to the one across town. They are always very helpful and friendly. Recently I was looking for a new collar for my mini dachshund and wanted one with spikes to fit his personality. Not only did they have them, but helped me determine his size as I hadn't measured him. Their pet iD tags range from the silver bone to the Dodger tag I purchased. They have a machine where I engrave it on the spot instead of having to wait and come back. One thing about this location. Some of the items seem to be in aisles in an haphazard design. I'm constantly asking where any particular item is located. Very frustrating. If you have their card and use it to purchase dog or cat food the 11th bag is free. I've never utilized the grooming service so I can't review that aspect of this store read more

Specifically referring to Petco at 3985 State St. Arrived for a haircut appointment for my dog which I made over a month ago. I came with my confirmation and they had no record of me making an appointment. They said their groomer quit and they have no one to do it. Obviously I gave them an earful about how unacceptable this is. OK fine if you have to cancel appointments due to a groomer quitting but you need to notify people. That is the differences between good customer service and lousy customer service. So do not bother making an appointment here because they will not bother notifying you when their groomer quits. read more

Two years ago our dog had a very expensive surgery to remove a benign mass from her stomach that was caused by extreme skin sensitivities. She's on a highly restricted diet and cannot tolerate beef, chicken, turkey, etc.--only fish. Two days ago my husband was referred to Petco for raw booster mixers that contain fish only. He clearly explained his dietary concerns and was handed a small bag that cost $31.00. After opening the bag and giving our dog a few pieces in her bowl, I noticed that the mixers included chicken--a primary allergic irritant. When my husband tried to return the product today, the cashier said, "I can help you throw it away!" Nice knowing you, Petco. read more

UNPROFESSIONAL AND LAZY! That's a good way to describe the workers at this location. Walked around the store for 10 minutes before i was able to find a worker on the floor. After finally getting his attention because he had ear buds (unprofessional) in and couldn't hear me. I asked for help getting something a locked case. He tells me, "i don't have the keys. You need to go up to the front and ask for them. Then i can help you." So i had to do his job (lazy) for him! I get up to the front and i tell the cashier what he said. He tells me he doesn't have the keys. So instead of getting on the walkie to ask the manager for them, he leaves! Just left the register unattended (unprofessional) as a line was forming. He comes back to inform me that the person with the keys is on break and if i can wait 10-15 minutes. Ummmmmmm...... As far i know, you don't have to be the manager to open a lock case holding batteries. Why he didn't just get the keys himself? No clue. Again....... Lazy and unprofessional!!!!! By the way. I left and went to the petco on the eastside. I was greeted upon entrance. Lead to the batteries right away. Was out the door in less than a minute. Night and day. read more

Unfortunately I couldn't get there earlier, but still they were open. 2 men who worked there talked loudly where I could hear and said 'oh sure, don't worry about us staying late. People have no regard for other people. We don't have places we want to go.' I was so offended I told them I would go somewhere else to buy my dog a bed. ' They said, 'that's great. Go on'. When I first got my hamster here the guy didn't seem like he wanted to be working and he recommended me food that wasn't good for them. In addition they don't have a wide selection of small pet supplies. I went again in April to get another hamster and there were only mice. Do they have hamsters available now ? Do they have the welcome home books? I have also heard they don't let you shop indoors instead they pick items out for you which isn't convenient. read more

Small petco with mediocre employees. I find myself at times searching for someone to help me. Their selection of guinea pig and other small furry animals is small and so is the selection of foods, toys, accessories, etc. And something just dawned on me, the Petco PALS card (discount card) only saves a few cents here and there. and if you buy 10 bags of dog/cat food you get the 11 free. i don't have a dog or cat! I don't need free dog/cat food. I think it is about time I find a new petstore. read more

I love reading others reviews on yelp and how stupid the complaint is from people. I'm giving you one star because I fucked up and am blaming you. Here's my honest take: I can't say anything about the grooming, other than it IS petco, a huge corporate chain, and I would go to a specialty groomer if I wanted my dog to look like it went to a specialty groomer. You don't go to Mcdonalds and expect a 5-course meal for 5.99. As for the store itself, I have never had any issues finding anything I need. They have the store organized so that all the dog food is in one area. Dog toys and treats in another. Fish stuff, Rodents, Birds, Reptiles and Amphibians, all have their own designated areas. I believe the cat stuff is a little trickier to find because you have to make a right towards the back of the store into another little area. There you will find, cat stuff, pet beds and crates, and pet medicine/shampoos. As for customer service, also never had an issue. First time I took my dog in I had just gotten him from the shelter and his skin was so dry to the point he had flakes in his coat. The employee suggested something with avocado or oatmeal. So i bought the Avoderm with oatmeal, I have never seen dry skin since and my Border Collies red coat is beautiful. Now that I know what food and shampoo to use, I just walk in, make my purchases and leave. The Petco card, while it seems pointless is kinda handy. You get 5% back on all purchases. So once a month I usually get a 5$ off coupon any purchase so it's nice to get him a little toy or something for free. read more

On the plus, it has what I'm looking for--pet food, leashes, etc. But you better know what you're looking for because the employees don't seem to know or care much. It seems to be staffed by highschool kids who probably wish they had more interesting jobs, so who can blame them. If you adopt a shelter dog or cat, ask for the coupon book that they distribute for adopted pets. It's got a lot of good coupons worth quite a bit in there. The grooming manager of this store refuses to wear a mask or social distance in the store when off the clock. I asked her to step back and she got rude and told me that she doesn't have to because she's a manager at the store. Very unprofessional of her to come into her place of work, not follow the guidelines (that say they are "required" on yelp), be rude to other customers, and then say that she can do what she wants because she's a manager there. Just left Petco on State Street and was truly taken by a woman that was the cashier. Caitlin ( hope I spelled that right ) was beyond awesome. This is what stood out so much. Upon standing in line and waiting, with only one person at the register I could overhear her talking to each individual person. She was totally 100% there while ringing up items and talking about some of the special things that the customer was purchasing. At that same time she would notice everybody walking in the door and being sure that she said hello with such a very happy manner. Standing in line I pretty much figured it out that she was number one in customer service and an employee I am sure, Petco is very proud of. When it was my turn to go she greeted me with a huge smile and with great eye contact. She rang me up and while doing that she made me feel important and happy about what I just purchased. Every single time I come to the state street location I have such a great experience. I just had a baby 2 months ago, bringing my 2 dogs. German Shepard & a Siberian husky isn't an easy task to do on my own! Sarah has always helped me from start to finish. She even helps bring my dogs to the car with me. Lauren horrible customer service . went in to buy frozen yogurt treats for my pet the freezer said it was $7.49 or $8.49 went to pay rang up to $14.79 . Sorry to be such an inconvenience, Petco. I went in to pick up an online order & buy some treats for a newly adopted dog. One of the cashiers couldn't be any happier to be there, meeting people and pets, laughing and chatting. My cashier barely spoke and seemed put out by my visit. She asked if I had a phone number with them. I said I wasn't sure so she just finished the transaction before I could ask her to check. And then I asked if she would add my large online purchase to my Petco rewards account and, while she did it for me, she seemed annoyed that I asked. "Mandy" answered the phone just now (11/13/15) and helped me find the time and prices for Petco's next vaccination clinic. She was SUPER sweet and helpful. I do appreciate Petco hiring such nice, personable people. My dog is due for her three-year rabies vac, and Petco is the only place I know locally that conducts low-cost vac clinics. That said----I want to warn people to BEWARE of being talked into "packages" of vaccine shots that your pet may not need. Years ago my friend took in our dog for her rabies shot, and despite my warning, he came home and told me (proudly) how our dog was now vaccinated against not just rabies, but kennel cough and Corona virus, too. Oh, no. Our dog is never boarded, so she definitely didn't need the kennel cough ("Bordetella") vaccine. And Corona virus is something that affects dogs residing EAST of the Rockies! So our dog sure as heck didn't need that vaccine either. When I contacted Petco and, eventually, the Vet that talked my friend into these unnecessary shots-----I got NOWHERE. You have been warned. Only get the vacs your dog needs. read more

To start on a happy note, I like that this place is open late. They also stock live animals like birds, turtles, and rodents. They have a decent selection of pet accessories and food which are cheap but probably not the best quality. I usually come here for bird treats and cat litter. As others have mentioned, one of the frustrating things about this store is the poor customer service. You'd have better luck summoning the Easter Bunny for assistance than trying to get someone on the floor to help you. Also, allocate a few extra minutes for your visit because things often seem problematic with the cash register. I must say that the rudeness of the grooming department is of a truly exceptional standard. Usually when you go to a groomer they pat your dog and say some calming words to put the dog at ease. Not so here! But they were equally horrid to me, so I don't think my dog took it personally. I didn't feel comfortable leaving him there so we walked out and will never return. I'd probably give the store itself 2 stars and the groomers minus ten so I settled on 1 star. read more

Plain & Simple: Worst Petco I've ever step foot in. Who owns this place? And who the hell is managing it?! Such a shame that there's only 1 Petco in Santa Barbara. This place is so dirty, always carts full of merchandise blocking every other aisle. I'm originally from LA where there's plenty of great Petco stores and it's just what I'm used to seeing. But since I've moved here a year ago, I've had to drive 2 hours to LA to have my dog groomed at a different Petco because they rarely ever have grooming services at this one? And I only drive all the way to LA to make use of the VitalCare plan I pay for monthly which comes with really good grooming perks. Wondering if multiple calls to corporate would fix this store? Unprofessional. I mean yea I get it it's Petco but cmon. Okay so the other day I made an appoinment for my puppy. I made it specifically for Monday morning because I don't work Monday. I wouldn't ever make it for a Sunday and when I was on the phone I kept repeating okay 9:30 Monday. So I wake up Monday morning and go to Petco. I'm at Petco and the lady with a lot of facial hair comes out and she says do you have an appointment with me today and I'm like yes for 9:30. She say okay let me check. She says no um your appointment was yesterday and I told her that, that wasn't possible cause I work Sunday and I'd never make the appointment on a day that I work. She rudely looks at me, grabs the computer screen turns the screen towards me and points and says yes it was. Okay even if it was human error on their end I would've been okay whatever but the thing is they never called me at all yesterday and I dogsit and have taken other dogs to the Petco on milpas and they would call me shortly after the time I'm supposed to come in. I stood around for about 20 minutes about 5 feet from an employee, and was waiting to g t helped in the fish department. He looked at me multiple times but refused to acknowledge me in anyway or help. This is the first rule in customer service, and he obviously has not been trained. I've had this happen multiple times in this location. It's an embarrassment. And he lost out on business because I was going to make a big fish purchase but instead walked out with nothing. I absolutely love petco! My favorite thing is the dog treat bar there because that's where I go to get my dogs treats and I love that you can pick and choose what you want. I just started taking my dog to the grooming salon a couple of months ago and I am extremely happy with the service there! Jordan M. who works at the grooming salon is extremely helpful and so sweet when it comes to the pets. got my older dog groomed here a day or so ago & she's never liked the groomers & is usually nervous going in, but afterwards she's usually happy to be done & is totally fine. when i picked her up after coming here for the first time she was shaking ): she is super nervous & anxious now more than usual? even days after we went. what did they do to her to make her like this? makes me upset to think about it, would not recommend using the grooming service. read more

The grooming center is a total waste! I took my 10 month old Tibetan Terror to have him clipped for the first time and they butchered him. I gave them photographs of the desired cut and they ignored them. His coat was about 6 inches long and I asked them to cut it to one half it length and they cut him to 2" at the longest area and even shorter. I also asked them to do their ear and nail service and they never did it and had to take back in to have the ears done, nails never got done. The process took 6 hours and they never even completed the grooming , removing mats. GO KNOWING THAT YOU ARE AT RISK OF DISSATISFACTION.!!! read more

Rude employee! I ordered 2 items for curbside pickup (which is the only way to shop due to COVID). The employee came out and tried to put one item into my trunk... it was a smaller/less expensive size than I prepaid for. She was rude when I pointed out the error and acted like she was doing me a favor. She came back and told me she only had one of my items and I would only get charged for the part of my order which I picked up... which isn't true. Now I have to call corporate to get this sorted out and get my refund. I've shopped here for years and never had a bad experience in the store... and I've never seen this employee before. read more

I am fortunate to have rescued a beautiful black lab, 10 months old, and I went to this Petco for a leash and other equipment for this dog. The staff there were so very helpful. They came to bring the dog into the store, and to help me hold on to him (he is not quite used to my voice yet, so I worry that he may pull away) and they advised that I use a harness, which is very helpful with a big dog, and they even helped with the tag, advice on toys for him and obedience classes. They were absolutely professional, compassionate and wonderful to work with. I was really impressed. Thank you so much for caring for the pets that come in! read more

I once witnessed a man bring a fancy rat back to the store in a tiny container- the kind little kids would keep a creek frog or fish in. He wanted to return the animal because he couldn't care for it. The rat looked starved and neglected. The employee literally took the rat from the container and put it right back into the store's community (like 5 other rats live there) rat cage without having a vet to check to make sure it 1) wasn't about to die and 2) was not going to infect or spread diseases to the other rats they are selling to children and families. These people don't give a flying **** about the animals. Dead fish floating in the tanks, feces pressed against the walls of the glass terrariums. They have good prices for basic pet needs like food and toys, but I'd rather buy online from places like Drfostersmith.com or support local pet businesses. read more

Bad bad bad. Took our pooch in for a wash and cut. Checked in at 12:30, they said 3-4 hours and they will call when they are done. No word. I called at 4:30 and they haven't even started to wash Nougat! Then they said they will go ahead and take care of him at no charge and should be done at 6 and will call me. I called at 6:30 and yes, Noug is done. On the way there, they called and told me Irving is ready?! We got there. They carried Noug out vs typically walking him out, and told me his nails were too short to be trimmed. That is just bullshit because you can tell they need trimming. And, guess what, looks like he only got a wash, no trim what so ever. And worse of all, he was crying all the way home, and is still crying! These guys are irresponsible and bad; well managed or not, they don't deserve your pooch. read more
