Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, Zip-a-dee-ay! My oh my, what a wonderful find. Ages ago, I read on Edhat that these "ladies" will clip a dog's nails for only $5.00. Nevertheless, I continued to trim my dog's nails myself, much to his displeasure and my steadily increasing aggravation. After over 7 years of me trimming his nails, my normally lovely sweet angel dog had suddenly morphed into a little 4-lb jerk. An over-reacting, acting out little brat. He would cry and lick my hands and struggle and then, about a year ago, at every nail trim, he REALLY began to try my patience. He started screeching and carrying on like you wouldn't believe. He constantly squirmed and licked. I had never once injured him or caused him any pain. I tried wrapping him in a soft towel. I gave him cheese treats, talked sweetly to him. Nothing worked. FINALLY I'd had it with him. Today I took him into A1 Laundromutt. I walked in the door. "Barbara," (the owner, smiling and extremely nice) immediately took my little fusspot so-and-so from me. Without benefit of wrap or anything I thought would *definitely* be needed to restrain him, Barbara proceeded to clip, clip, clip away. He didn't make a peep. Just had the best experience here. Barbara is the greatest! My long-haired cat, Leo, was in need of a nail trim and a bath. I had tried myself but he just wasn't having it. I quickly found out that cat groomers in Santa Barbara are few and far between. Most will take in a dog no problem, but draw the line when it comes to felines. I do not know why. Very grateful to have found this place, and even more grateful that a same-day appointment was accommodated! Barbara, the groomer, was very friendly and personable - and she was extra sweet to Leo who was rather unsure of his new surroundings. She clipped his nails with ease and got him into the bath without so much as a flinch. I was allowed to stand in the room as Barbara did her magic on my Leo. He was unsure of the water at first and was on edge the entire time, but Barbara was so gentle and effective with the bathing techniques. Leo is now fresh and clean with his clipped nails and shampoo. Pricing was lower than I would have envisioned, too. I can't thank Barbara enough for this experience. A-1 Laundromutt mistreats dogs. The groomers there cut and burned our dog severely. We trusted the groomers there to give our dog, Odom, a standard cut and wash, something you would expect most groomers to be capable of handling. When we picked him up we were horrified to see his body was covered with patches of seared skin (photos included below). We saw blood beneath his hair, raw flesh exposed, and a change in his formerly trustful demeanor. Odom is a very mellow, senior dog. He is completely cooperative with strangers so there is absolutely no reason for these allegedly accidental injuries. The groomers at A-1 are negligent to the point of bodily harm when brushing or blow-drying dogs' hair. Additionally, the amount of blood that was most certainly shed during this mistreatment is a serious red flag for the sterility of this place of business. It took months for Odom to heal from the injuries inflicted by A-1 Laundromutt. The wounds on his neck became infected and required medical attention throughout his months-long recovery. Perhaps even more heartbreaking than these physical injuries was the emotional toll of the situation. Odom was uncomfortable and ashamed as he had to wear a cone for several weeks to prevent him from scratching at his wounds. Our once friendly family member became withdrawn and lethargic, uninterested in moving because of the pain it caused him. When confronted with the photos of Odom's injuries, the owner of A-1 tried to quell our anger by quickly offering that his next haircut would be free. They were disillusioned to believe that a discount would make up for the terrible abuse our defenseless dog endured. We found it extremely telling that there was such an established prescription for responding to complaints of injuries inflicted by groomers. Even more telling was their failure to acknowledge the injuries on their own regard. We are posting this review to ensure that no dog ever has to endure this abuse. We feel terribly guilty for unknowingly subjecting him to easily avoidable pain. A-1 Laundromutt does not deserve anyone's business. read more

I have been taking my 2 Golden's to Barbara for a few years now. They are big, hairy boys; lots to handle. Every single visit, nearly every month, I drop them off filthy and smelling like "dog" and a tangled, dirty mess. I come back roughly 4 hours later and I have beautifully scrubbed and perfectly trimmed boys who just smell like spring flowers. After COVID, I was hesitant. I find it upsetting that anyone would negatively comment on Yelp about her and her business in a manner that would insinuate that she or her workers caused harm to a dog. I can say without hesitation that she loves animals with all her heart. She would never hurt an animal and takes pride in having an incredible amount of patience with even the difficult dogs who are her clients. I have seen her bend over backwards to accommodate dogs who can't stand on their own due to age, etc. Barbara has a reputation for grooming dogs that other groomers have said no to in the past. I had a kind of bummer experience here. I had called before hand to ask about nail trims. My dog really doesn't like his paws being touched so I thought he needed a professional groomer to do it so he couldn't reach his head down to bite at my hands. The person I spoke too ensured that he would be in good hands and that they deal with that all the time. My boyfriend took my dog in the next day and said he wanted a nail trim. Before he could ask any questions, someone came up to my dog in my boyfriends arms and just started trying to trim his nails. My dog got super scared and was crying and trying to get away and bite at their hands. My boyfriend explained he's very shy and doesn't like his paws touched. They kept trying and then called him a "bad dog" because he doesn't want his paws touched. Then they took him back to a room but still were just holding him trying to trim his nails. He was literally screaming his head off which I'm sure was just him being dramatic, but they didn't make any effort to make it easier on him or calmer. They didn't even put a muzzle on him until way far into the grooming. I have no problem with muzzles, if they need it, put it on! But I felt it was super irresponsible for them to not do that from the beginning to keep everyone safe. But if they had even given my dog a chance to say hello to them or taken him back to a room, it may have been a better experience. read more

The Worst service Ever! I left my dog (cocker) for a bath and when I arrived to pick him up he was terrible. They cut his fur randomly and he was awful!!! I asked way they did something like that and the woman told me that he had a lot of knots and she couldn't give him a bath!!!! But, way they didn't call me to ask permission to cut the knots? I was looking for a place that DOES NOT put your fur babies in kennels and also that had availability the next day. I called a couple places, but loved this place because the lady on the phone was so nice and answered all my questions. I came in the next day and dropped off my pup, and came back in 3 hours like the lady had said. They did a PHENOMENAL job and my usually anxious pup was in such a good mood when I picked him up. This is a great place for my French bulldog to get a bath and interact with other doggies. The first time We went there, I called for a same-day appointment and they were able to fit me in, I got the chance to see how much the staff cares about the work they do and how happy all the clients were. We have been back a couple times now, and they are always great. The location is pretty convenient being so close to downtown and their prices are super reasonable. Do not trust this business!!!! My dog can be aggressive with other dogs and has gotten into some bad fights. Before I brought her in I told the owner this and that she would need to be kept separated for everyones safety. I was told over the phone that wouldn't be a problem but when I picked her up she was roaming free with the other dogs. About a year later I was in a jam and brought her back thinking that my previous experience was a fluke. Nope. They didn't listen. To my knowledge no one was hurt but its pretty obvious they don't care about the health and safety of our pets here. read more

The folks here were super nice. They prefer not to kennel the dogs if they can help it, which is probably happy for most dogs. But the thing I think is a real problem is that they told me that they don't ask for proof of dogs' vaccinations. OK...but you're letting the dogs run around together. Isn't that a problem? The location is very convenient and I really appreciated them taking my dogs on short notice, but the fact that they don't check vaccinations made me VERY uncomfortable. Took my Bichon for Grooming. Told the assist. to give trim not short stay with current cut. Returned to find she'd been sheared!!! I could see her skin where as b4 she had a "show cut"! I couldn't believe it and to add to that a big dog liked her so continued to drool on her back and neck! The groomer said she could get him to leave my dog alone! I was beside myself knowing how miserable she must have been! The charge was way too high. She had no mats but the charge was like I was charged for extra work! Will NEVER go back!! These ladies were so friendly! I purchased the Living Social deal to try them out. They absolutely won my business. My dog has lots of undercoat and they did the best job I've seen as far as brushing it out! It's worth noting their address is actually 312 W Mission. I highly recommend them! Quick update: 12 hours after my dog was groomed, he had an "altercation" with a skunk. These women let me bring him in right away and are giving him another bath as we speak! Piper has been going to A1 for years now. I am always pleased with her haircuts. Piper is a cavalier King Charles and depending on the season we adjust her overall fur length and paw hair. I took my 1 year Maltese to A1 this week. This was our first grooming experience in SB and I was very happy with the results. Sherlock got a very nice face and paw trim, as well as his nails. What I like about this place is that it is very casual and the pups have some space to run around. I condo sit about half the year in SB and was so pleased to find a grooming service that gives 'mom and pop' personal service and loving care at affordable prices. My dog received a wash, got his ears cleaned, nails clipped and glands taking care of. He is usually nervous and was totally fine when we picked him up... thus, I know he was taken good care of. I highly recommend this grooming service. I will be coming back! This place is total stress for clients and employees. Took my healthy golden retriever in for a puppy cut. Was told that he was so uncooperative that all they could do was wash him. He came home with a large knot in his neck. He was so traumatized . Barbara couldn't even remember him when I spoke to her on the phone 2 days later. Then when I asked her what happened she said he was growling at her and she couldn't get him to calm down. She said she knows he had the lump before we took him in. We have a vet appt. tomorrow. She never asked how he was or asked to be told what we found out. This place is not a pet friendly groomer. Extremely defensive and my dog is a golden retriever.
