We had a suddenly sick kitty at 7:20pm on a Friday night while housesitting in Santa Barbara. I knew from working with FB pet rescue groups that AVS was ALWAYS very highly recommended and we were not disappointed. We called first to let them know we were coming and to check that Hal could be seen. We were brought right in, and Hal was carefully taken back. The waiting room was full of books and photos-very welcome distractions while we waited. We were updated periodically, and everyone was so kind and patient with our questions and worry. Thankfully it was nothing life-threatening and we were able to take Hal home after he was examined, treated and observed for a bit. We were sent home with very detailed instructions about his medications and care. We are so grateful that AVS was available to care for Hal, and that he got such caring and wonderful treatment. Dr. Nanelle Barash and her staff have been nothing but supportive, responsive and compassionate since my dog, Lilly, was diagnosed with the awful disease IMHA in June 2024. Advanced Veterinary Specialists is the closest vet to us with a canine internal medicine specialist, an hour and a half drive away. When Lilly was still in crisis after having 3 transfusions in a little more than a week, Dr. Barash was kind and accommodating when she was released from an emergency vet in Santa Barbara following her third transfusion and referred to AVS on short notice. We found Dr. Barash to be straight-forward as she carefully explained the disease, what they know about it, as well as what is still a mystery. Lilly had already been through quite a few tests and scans. Dr. Barash said there were several tests she could do but didn't think they were necessary nor did she want to put Lilly through anymore than she'd already been through unless we wanted peace of mind that her anemia wasn't the result of cancer. We were grateful for her honesty as well as sparing our pocketbooks, but did elect to have another ultrasound of Lilly's spleen. Because IMHA is a marathon and not a sprint, I have complete confidence in the excellent care Lilly will continue to receive from AVS and Dr. Barash, as well as their commitment to communication and treatment coordination with Lilly's primary vet in Pismo Beach. read more

Took my cat here after a seizure. while waiting to pay, with no staff in the front, I saw a woman struggling with her dog right at the door. I opened it. about 30 seconds later a staff comes and tells me "if you open the door for someone, we won't know theyre here. they need to wait at the doorbell. if an animal was in a life threatening situation, we wouldn't know" the question is - if something is life or death, why is there no sign on the door?? I can't be the first person to do someone a favor and open the door for an animal owner who has an emergency at 10 PM. this should be fixed ASAP if it was truly that important of a detail. I would also like to add that I am impressed with the changes I have seen over a few months. I brought my cat to be put under euthanasia a few months ago and it was a bad experience. the receptionist was rude and the conversation about payment was callous, the TV was playing videos reminiscent of animals fail YouTube videos and there was pop music and one particular song was about how great it was to be alive. at midnight at a vet hospital. anyways I left a review about this experience and I was happy to see that it created actual change. there was great animal safety and fun facts in the tv. I would say that some music, some chill instrumental music, would help a lot. the utter silence is quite uncomfortable for this setting. read more

So it's been a while since this Veterinary clinic made a horrific mistake where we had to put our beloved dog down. Our dog had a stone in his urinary tract. Their clinic was recommended. The "doctor" told us she had a technique to release the stone. We trusted her. Mistake! During the procedure, she made a mistake. On a call, they then provided us an option to operate to see how bad the mistake was to the tune of $25K. They said they had no idea how bad the mistake was, made no guarantees, and could put him down on the table. Letting him go was a VERY difficult decision especially due to a mistake by a "professional." That was a heartbreaking day! If you love and cherish your pet, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere and avoid this clinic! read more

We came on a Monday morning because our dog has been shaking and weak in the legs for 2 days. Without an appointment we checked in and waited about 15 minutes before they took her back. The front staff was extremely welcoming and caring. Dr. Samar Mohsenian examined her (an emergency exam cost $150) and brought us into a room to consult with us on a treatment plan. She was fantastic at explaining what she found from the exam and the path forward. She explained the genetics of our dogs breed and the common problems that may lead to what she was experiencing. Samar was extremely knowledgeable and made us confident that our dog was in capable hands. We waited an hour for the X-rays to be completed and sent to the professional radiologist. The determined a treatment plan and took our dog home. All in all the time it took from walking in to walking out was 3 hours. And actually the price wasn't as horribly high as I thought it might come out to be. read more

Not only were they incredibly kind to me, and allowed me to stay with my cat for every part of the process except and placing the IV, but they provided her with a peaceful experience, and the rates were affordable. I had to take my dog Noel to AVS to receive IV fluids and 24 hour monitoring. She has kidney failure and seriously ill. Dr Weintraub was very kind and helpful. I hated having to leave Noel but felt reassured she was being treated compassionately and in good hands. AVS phoned me often to discuss treatment. AVS does encourage visiting I met Dr Gallo when I visited and she was also great. Dr Mohsenian phoned me the next day keeping me informed about Noel's ultrasound. All the doctors I spoke with were very kind and helpful as were all the AVS staff. Noel spent 3 days and stabilized to bring her home. Kidney failure is wicked. We needed help and AVS Failed!! Then, at the end of our horrific treatment, and being overcharged in the $8,000 range for a series of tests that yielded no results showing the treatment needed, we requested to be transferred to another Vet who could help us. Then, AVS made us wait an hour and 1/2 to pick up our dog, yet they had us call in advance for this pick-up appt, and it was horrible waiting, again, in their lobby to transport our baby! and we could not see him for this whole time worried not knowing if he was okay. They kept delaying us, and it was so upsetting it was beyond recognition. Be aware of this tactic! Because, they made a plea to keep us there at AVS, and they were stone cold business, before we got to hold our dog, and after we declined, they did an "Up-Sell" to extract more money out of us. To show their intent, would you believe they charged us for 5 prescriptions (the same ones we came in with) and 1 new one. We told AVS we didn't need to be charged for all of these at $142.00. So, they took the 1 new prescription box away from us. The person behind the desk didn't want to give us a credit, so they falsely added 4 boxes of the identical medicine, which we would not need past the 1st box, and because these had expiration dates before, if we ever needed them, and AVS told us the bill was now somehow $142.59. Let alone we were in a rush and needed help and they upset us terribly, again! There was no credit, instead they made us wait because we owed them .59c. This is when we were rushing out, and our dog was in dire need of the new Vet. They concocted this figure and manufactured an amount, so they wouldn't have to credit us at all. They made the process so miserable. My DollyParton passed away April 17th after 4 months of struggling to gain back what she lost after being poisoned (drugged) by a jealous psychotic woman. She began having seizures and finally a heart attack. On the evening of the 17th my husband took her from Mee for safe keeping so that we may grieve. We agreed (his idea) that the next day we would drop DollyParton off at this office, unfortunately for Mee, that did not happen. My husband Eric Carlos Sanchez whom is a great manipulator and so charming when it comes to women, convinced one of the staff to exclude Mee from the process and updates only after I had already been in communication with this office. My husband hid her from Mee and on top of that I got no help from AVS. He was to drop her off and I pick her up when all is done. I explained and would have happily gone to show them Dollys paperwork that shows and proves DollyParton is 100% mine. I allowed Dolly to keep collar w/tag on till cremated. This office instead of calling my number on her tag and questioning why all of a sudden I'm not allowed any info, this office decided to keep hanging up on Mee each time I called. I wound up in hospital because of the mental anguish and torment this office caused Mee. I explain to them that my Folly is there to be cremated and the staff showed no compassion and definitely weren't willing to listen. I can't say enough wonderful things about this emergency vet hospital. We brought our 7 year old boxer Lennox to them as she was having unexpected seizures. Every doctor, tech, and front office staff member were so kind and compassionate. Both of the doctors we saw explained what was going on, offered compassionate solutions, and made us feel cared for in so many ways. Ultimately, she did have to be euthanized due to a possible brain tumor. Our sweet girl will missed by so many. read more

Had to bring my senior cat to be put down, pretty awful experience. The receptionist kept interrupting my conversation with my partner when we were discussing the two options we were given: euthanasia and a vet exam then euthanasia if the vet thought there was nothing to be done. Receptionist kept reiterating we weren't allowed to talk to the vet about "the case" if we chose to go with euthanasia. He was clearly unempathetic. To add on to this, the waiting room was extremely insensitive. To set the scene, it's past midnight and I am there with two other parties also sobbing, and all of the music playing was super upbeat and one song sang "it is so great to be alive, to be alive". To make matters worse, the TV in there was just playing animal fail videos, and there was atleast ten clips in a row of dogs tumbling down stairs and the like. Clearly the environment was set up with no regard to the majority of those walking through the door who are seeking emergency vet care. Finally it was sickening how we were told about the "each pound of your cats weight will be a dollar for their cremation, so $11 for 11 lbs or $8 for 8 lbs". They need to make a pamphlet to explain that and the options because the receptionist surely did a terrible job. The only positive part of the experience was the kind vet. The experience of saying such a hard goodbye was made worse by their attitude there and for $200 too! read more

The staff does not honor the code of ethics in which they promised under oath. I witnessed a dog being refused care while in mid seizure outside of the clinic. The pet parents called AVS before they went to the clinic and then they were turned away. They were panicking as their dog was dying and the staff turned them Away. Please do not go here for the safety of your animal, and your wallet. I value my dogs life so much. She is like my baby, I have grown up with her and she means the world to me. One night, she woke me up unable to breath, having seizures, so the next day I took her to this vet. They charged me 6,000 dollars before they even saw her, but I was desperate and they were the only place near me so I payed. They told me I should think about putting her down because there was nothing more they could do. They recommended that they could intubate her, and put her in a medically ensured coma for 20,000 dollars until she dies, which would make her life miserable, and that was money I did not have. I told them I could not afford that, and after I brought my father into the deal who is a medical doctor, and THEN they told me that they wouldn't recommend it since he had a medical background. That already was a red flag. On top of that, they said her only chance of living was to be transported to a doctor in ventura but they weren't unable to because she was not able to be transported. They told me she would die in the next thirty minutes. I rushed to pick her up, and cried the whole day hoping that she wouldn't die alone. That night I stayed up, didn't get a wink of sleep, didn't go to school, because they told me she would die, and I thought it was a miracle that she had made it this far. After multiple seizures and a night of no sleep, I decided that maybe I get another opinion. I took her to another vet, they kept her overnight. They gave us medication, and now she is alive and thriving. I am so upset and I still cry over it now because they stole my money that I DID NOT have without even curing her, told me she was dead, and if they would have handed me a medication, she could have been healed perfectly. Please please please for the sake of your money, time and ESPECIALLY your pet, do not come here. If you love your pet, take them somewhere else. I could not have imagined if I had listened to them and put her down when she still had a chance of life. I prayed every night, and I thank god so much seriously that she is alive and well today. This place took advantage of how much I cared for my baby, just so that they would get their money. I don't even want to know how many more they took advantage of, and by the other negative reviews here, it seems like a lot. You can go to any other vet, and it would be better than this one. Take them to SB Humane, they are very cheap they just need an appointment, or any other clinic in Santa Barbara. Please do not make the same mistake I did. read more

I am writing this negative review not because of the car given by AVS but because I think that they are unscrupulous. My sister's cat was brought in with kidney failure. I am the person in charge of my sister's financials which I explained to them at AVS along with the fact that my sister was in a treatment facility dealing with some very difficult mental issues. I asked when would they tell my sister that the cat was beyond help and they stated that they would never suggest treatment for a cat that could not be saved. We spent approximately $12,000 for the first hospital stay and then again approximately $12,000 for a second hospital stay. Then the cat was brought in a 3rd time and they suggested a blood transfusion and another hospital stay for another $10,000 even though as they admitted to me after the cat had no chance at any longevity and had to be put down 2 days after the 3rd stay. My sister could not make the difficult decision to let the cat go before almost $35,000 was spent to save a cat that they knew couldn't by the 3rd time be saved. They took advantage of my sister by giving her false hope and therefore she kept wanting to try and save the poor cat. read more

The first time I visited the office was around summer, during COVID. I was waiting in the parking lot for them to come get my dog when to my horror a vet tech brings an old lady her dog and lays him down in the parking lot. The tech proceeds to euthanize the dog in full view of the public side walk and anyone unfortunate enough to be in the parking lot. I called to say I found this disturbing and they told me it is the best they could do. I understand that these are difficult times but putting a dog down in the parking lot in very plain view is in poor taste. My dog was a patient there for 6 months after having an incomplete removal of a liposarcoma. He was treated with oral chemo which required monthly visits to refill the expensive prescriptions. Sadly, the chemo really didn't end up helping him. read more

I'm sorry to say that though I once respected and held this vet hospital in high acclaim, I no longer do. Several months ago I brought my dog in for X-rays because I noticed she was not putting weight on one of her back legs. Dr. Shields had performed 2 TPLO surgeries within the last five years on both of her back legs. I brought her to Advanced months before getting these x-rays. She would be sedated, since they were taking 3 different x-ray views; her spine, knee and hips. The x-rays showed some degeneration of our dog's spine but other than that, nothing 'alarming.' Physical therapy was suggested and we signed up for that at once. In the days to follow Luna's x-ray visit, we noticed that her stability was worse than when we brought her in. I called Advanced and asked if anything out of the ordinary may have happened while x-raying her and Dr. Sheilds reported to me that she was in the room with the technicians and nothing out of the ordinary took place. Luna, a young 10 yr, went to physical therapy 2 times per week, and had acupuncture to try and heal and strengthen 'the muscles around the spine." After over 2 months, we saw very little improvement from the PT and wanted to get to the bottom of things, so we made an appointment for an ultra sound. We wanted to rule out anything possibly pressing on her spine internally. In the early morning on the day we were scheduled to take Luna to her ultra sound appointment, we found Luna in her bed, unable to pick herself up. She couldn't stand and was listless. We brought water to her, as she was fasting for the ultra sound. I immediately called Advanced and spoke with a very insensitive, rude associate, Frankie, whom I told I was cancelling our ultra sound appointment but still needed to bring Luna in because something is very wrong. He told me, "we'll decide if she gets the ultra sound when we see her." And I told him, no, you won't. I'm cancelling the appointment because she can't stand up...at all. He then changed his tone, said I could bring her in as an emergency client and asked when we will be coming in and I said I would come at the same time as the ultra sound, 10 am. We live 35 minutes from the hospital and when we got there, we spoke with Matt, who said there was confusion about our appointment and asked if we were there for the ultra sound appointment. which was unsettling to us, since we were very clear about what was happening. They told us we'd have to wait and we said no problem, we would. About 20 minutes later after I called them to inquire about Luna needing to go to the bathroom since she hadn't in the morning and if she did, could someone please help us and they said Matt was coming out to speak to us. He came out and told us they can't see us and that he spoke to all the doctors and they all said it would be better for us to go to Ventura, which is an hour away from Advanced. Matt was pretty detached about the situation and we were pretty surprised that the doctor who performed the surgeries on our dog was now saying she was too busy to see our dog and sent us away. I asked Matt if they were turning others away he said they were turning lots of people away. I wish that was the worst of it, but it was not. We took Luna, thank goodness in the end, to Ventura Emergency Hospital, where they took her right away and later learned from prior reports,that during the x-ray she had at Advanced, she had a fever of 103, which is definitely cause for some investigation. We were never told about her fever and when Luna was admitted to Ventura Hosp. she had a high fever again. It kept rising. Luna wound up having over 105 fever. She was in ICU in the hospital for a week. And thankfully, to the amazing surgeon, Dr. Simpson and all the doctors and aids there, they found out that Luna had a severe infection in front of and in back of the her knee, where the plate was, inserted by the surgeon at AVS, who wouldn't see us in an emergency. In fact, the screws in the plate were loose and there was no bone attached to the plate. Thank goodness we opted to get an ultra sound on her knee and that the doctors were so on top of it that they did everything to find out what was going on with our sweet Luna. Dr. Simpson (Ventura Emergency Hospital) performed surgery, removing the plate and infection and slowly, Luna's fever started coming down. Did I mention that Dr. Simpson called us to speak with us during her day off, while Luna was still in the hospital? This...is not only a very highly qualified doctor but also a caring one. No follow up from Advanced to see how Luna was doing. Antibiotics were given at the Ventura emergency hospital and helped greatly, her fever kept going down and we were finally able to take Luna home. It has been over a month now, and Luna is still not able to walk fully on that leg, but we are working with her and she is improving. Dr. Barash is amazing. My sweet almost 15 year old dog saw Dr. Barash for over 6 months periodically. Although surgery may have been the most lucrative for the vet, Dr. Barash was honest and forthright about his life expectancy and what was best for US. I appreciate her care and compassion for me and my dog. No emergency vet is going to be inexpensive, and rightfully so, but the honesty is appreciated and knowing what the options are. Absolutely horrible. I took my cat into the ER with severe abdominal swelling due to a massive fluid build up. First, they wouldn't take him for days. When they finally agreed to take him, they charged me over 3k doing numerous "recommended" tests. I never got the results from the tests so I called them. They said they emailed them to me, but when I asked what email address they had for me, they said they had none on file.... Finally got an email a week later with my phone call records. 3 weeks later, no tests results and no recommendations. I'm not trying to figure out if I have to euthanize my cat, and again, tried calling to see if there is anything they can do based on the multiple ER appointments. Still waiting for a return call 6 hours later as my cat is dying. These guys are the worst. Would not take your pet here if you want him or her to live. Literally never spoke to a vet. read more
