I have yet to have a positive experience with Petco grooming on commercial Street in Salem, Oregon. I will never go back. They seem irritated with my presence and my dog's presence and the fact that we want services at all. They work very hard to turn us away every time. I go in for a walk-in service however I've been reprimanded for not making appointments and I've also been reprimanded for making appointments. In the time it takes them to find reasons to not trim my pups, fanny and feet they could have done the job five times. They have been rude on the phone and in person every time. I even was reprimanded for calling to cancel my appointment because I had a flat tire and had to have my car towed. They were extremely rude, even though I took my time to call them to cancel my appointment for something that was completely out of my control. Awful!!!! My dogs are the loves of my life and should never be made to feel as if they are a burden for a service that is being paid for. read more

When delivering an order placed online to someone's vehicle for curbside it's not very polite to just throw the dog food into their vehicle like use some common courtesy if you are that out of shape and unable to carry a 14 pound bag of dog food without throwing it into someone's vehicle then maybe you need to retire or find a new job!!!!! read more

I went in to replace a .29 goldfish that I had bought a few days before. It was skinny, wouldn't eat, and sat on the bottom with clamped fins. Again. I bought this fish from this very store a few days prior. Today I was assisted by Roxy. The goldfish Police. She immediately asked me what size my aquarium was. When I told her she became arrogant and condescending. Then she started on the myth that goldfish can't live in small tanks because it stunts their growth and causes their organs to continue to grow which causes them to suffer. We got into an argument and it escalated to the point where we were literally yelling at each other in the store. She has no idea how I take care of my fish. How many I have in my tank, or how often I change the water, or how much I feed or what types of filtration I have in there. I asked to speak to the manager, but she didn't show up. I asked for this attendant for her name and she wouldn't give it to me. Then she told me "to get the f--k out!" Whoa! Why does Petco hire these rude employees? This is the 2nd time I've encountered rude behavior like this in this very Petco. I wish Petco would do a better job educating their employees so they would get this straight. There is no actual scientific data that says goldfish stop growing in a small tank and that their organs continue to grow. That's false. What does exist is speculation that this happens from hobby based experience, welfare guide lines, and biological reasoning. But no real peer group double blind study. The bigger concern here is the water quality. And if she'd explained this to me and found out what kind of system I run, this altercation might possibly have been avoided. These fish pollute the water faster than smaller tropical fish. And the tank maintenance needs to be increased. Larger tanks are better because the higher volume of water isn't as easily polluted. Poor water conditions promote poor health and slow growth. But somehow this has become twisted around and now if you don't have a 100 gallon aquarium, then it's against the law to have goldfish. I will never go back there This store is horrible. By reading other Petco reviews it looks like I am not the only one to have these same unpleasant encounters. I won't shop there again. read more

Super annoying experience. The lady working at the aquarium has some sort of fish code of honor she is sworn to like a GD samurai. She wouldn't sell me GUPPIES unless I told her my tank size, temp, bacteria, pH, Nitrates/Nitrites etc, then told me I couldn't have 19 guppies in a 55gal tank. That's not even true. Super weird, I wouldn't go as far as RUDE, but off putting, judgy and bad. This is a pet store. You guys sell intelligent mammals to 18 year olds. The person working the front desk in the grooming salon was excellent and very helpful! This is not about the employees. I wanted to get a nail trim for my cat. I went online--they only let you schedule online appointments for dogs. They said to call. I called. No answer--a recording said to use the website. I used the corporate Petco chat thing, they said cat nail trims are walk in only. So I walked in with my cat...they are by appointment only ‍ They asked if I wanted to make an appointment for next week. Nope! Do NOT take your dogs here for grooming. Not only did they give my pomerianian a cut MUCH shorter than I'd asked for despite pulling up a picture of something that could reasonably be achieved, but his cut is uneven and patchy and he still had tangles behind his ears and neck on top of everything else. A blindfolded middleschooler could've done a better job. I will never come back. read more

I come here to buy food and supplements for my dogs. It seems they are priced equally with M**B@y for the products I buy for them. I just started buying live treats for my chickens. I purchased night crawlers a few weeks ago, came home excited to give the girls a snack. The package was dirt only. The tag said "18 Nightcrawlers". There wasn't a single one in there. I took it back immediately, and had the checker watch as I opened a replacement. Thankfully there were worms but I highly doubt there were 18. I have also bought their 500ct giant meal worms. Didn't think anything of it. The girls love them. I bought more tonight and decided to count them. There were only 320 + 6 noticeably dead/black ones and a bunch of flakey pieces. For almost $30, I would expect to get a lot closer to 500. Disappointing. Each hash mark in the photos is 10 mealworms. Petco needs to do a better job of vetting their vendors and making sure they aren't getting ripped off too! read more

This store is cramped and cluttered. In the aquatic section I was horrified to see so many dead fish in the tanks. And they weren't even the tanks "under observation". It's actually sad. First of all, this store is not clean and smells awful. There is dust and mold everywhere near the fish. there are far too many reptiles in the same cages. The reptiles actually look sad. 4-5 birds in tiny enclosures. A very unfriendly staff that obviously doesn't know much about animals. They tried to offer me large crickets for my juvenile leopard gecko. Their fish are in what appear to be rarely cleaned tanks. I don't recommend this place. read more

I use Petco for both my crested gecko, and cats needs. I have litter, cat food, treats all on auto ship and while I have found that service to be convenient I am ending it today. This specific Petco has left a sour taste in my mouth based on the managers poor attitude and neglect towards the animals in her care. Half dead bugs marked at 50% off. Animals with moldy produce. Adoptable cat with filthy crate. Reptiles with stuck shed... which can be very serious. I complained to the cashier and without questioning which reptile needed help, she shrugged and said she'd have her closer check on it. This bothered me so much, I called the store and asked to speak with the manager to make sure this little guy got help. To my surprise, she proudly stated that she was the cashier and still really didn't seem to care. I'm really heart broken by sad animals who rely on this manager to make sure they're taken care of. Petco should hire people who genuinely care about the wellbeing of their animals, and not just lazy and content clock punchers. read more

I have taken my English bulldog here to get a really good bath about 4 times and all of the times I was happy with the results. Today I took both of my EB's there to get a bath and when I got them home and let them sit on me they were still very dirty; like dirt dirty. There is visible dirt on their bellies and above their chests. They both still smell funky like they have been playing really hard for a full weekend (they haven't been playing since I picked them up from their bath). All in all I am very disappointed and will probably be switching to Petsmart when they need a grooming session. I am very disappointed. Their stuff is very very high priced but on the plus side they are next to a Tuesday Morning's who has very similar basic items for half the price (dog bed, treats, toys, etc.). read more

Well, to start with, Petco doesn't carry my dog's food. Most of their foods are low quality, and have either wheat, corn, soy, or some combination of these. Many dogs are allergic to one or more of W/C/S (my dog is allergic to wheat), so this is problematic. I recently purchased a betta, he died within a week. I've successfully had bettas before, so I'm positive it wasn't me. They guarantee fish and will refund the price of the fish, but they won't take back the $45 in supplies. Oh well. Their trainers are NOT Certified Professional Dog Trainers-- that doesn't matter to some people, but just keep that in mind. Finally, my dog was acting weird, so I took her in to have her anal glands expressed (Petco was cheaper than the vet). The lady told me that I should have it done "every time she's bathed." Interesting, because (1) you're not supposed to bathe dogs a lot, it messes with their natural oils, and (2) expressing a dog's anal glands when it's not necessary will cause the glands to need to be expressed more frequently than they would otherwise. Also, I found out later that Petco only externally expresses glands, not internally-- like blowing your nose halfway when you're sick. A general lack of knowledge and lack of quality pet supplies. I went in to buy some fish and got helped by the aquarium specialist Chad who had a lot of knowledge and had all of the aquariums clean and running smooth. That is the first time I've been to a petco and did not see a single dead fish and I was truly impressed. I will definitely be back!!! read more

Many of the employees there, with an exception of a few, are very friendly and helpful. I have received the WORST customer service of my life from the management team. They do not speak appropriate to their staff and when asked for help they say they are too busy. It's beyond frustrating and I would suggest the company shut it down, clean house and get people who actually like their jobs and can manage appropriately before this Petco ruins everyone's view of the company. I really like their dog trainers, very nice and professional, but the whole customer service experience basically ruined it for me. I like the store because it is a fun place to shop, has a great selection, always clean and tidy, has great staff most of the time. I have a favorite employee their that is awesome and she is always so caring. And is pretty much the place to go for your pets but, I do not like their prices. They are way to high and ridiculous. We go their to get a live large rat for our ball python and they seem to look like their medium sized rats and the medium look like they are small sized so I don't know who thought it would be okay to charge around 12 dollars for a medium rat labeled as a large one..It's so annoying because my ball python wont eat anything thawed and dead but, I can't find anywhere else to purchase cheaper rats that aren't sick and maybe wild. They need to seriously dock their prices because I have mentioned it to them and they just laugh it off, my favorite employee is the only one that agreed and sympathized with me on the subject. read more

Over priced, I made a shopping list online with their website and the prices were not matching the online price. The clearance items weren't really marked down much at all. The cat scratches were way too much there is a guy on Craigs list in Vancouver who makes them anyway you'd like for half the cost, custom built the way you'd like. He ensembles it for you too here you have to put it together your self. No one greeted me or asked if I needed help. We just got two new kittens and were in need of pretty much everything. The cashiers were chatting it up with one another having a conversation that should not have taken place in front of a customer, in fact it looks terrible on the business when the workers are dropping the F word left and right. The girl in the fish department was rude and made my grandsons visit there unforgettable and not in a good way. He got his own tank for Easter and went to get a couple fish to go in it and she refused to let him get the fish he wanted. I have had aquariums for years and have never had an experience like this. He wanted glow fish and the aquarium he got was sufficient for a couple of them. The only fish she would sell to him was a baby beta. He was in tears when he left. So needless to say we are not very happy and will never return to this store. Groomed my mini-aussie like a registered poodle with the entire coat the same length. Breeders have cutioned us that this is either indifference or incompetance for the need of this breed and to keep her out of the sun for extended periods (for a dog that loves to run and the dog park this will be aweful). She looks terrible and we will never return to this store or any other Petco - they assured us they had grooming experience with this breed. read more

Took the family dog (a mutt) in to have nails done. They barely if at all did work on the nails. They said his black nails made them worried they'd cut flesh underneath. You are supposed to be the professionals who should know how to cut nails! We decided we wouldn't take him back, but, my mother took him in for nails and a wash a couple months later. Took my 40lb cattle dog/rott mix in for a bath and brush appointment today. The young girl behind the counter seemed more eager to check her cell phone than to check me in. I was told that he would be brushed out, bathed, ears cleaned, and nails trimmed. The waiver they printed for me to sign listed shaving as an extra $11 charge. This dog has the coat of a lab, there is NO reason to shave him. They reassured me they were having "computer problems" and that he would not be shaved, even though it was on the invoice. This should have been my first sign to grab the leash back and walk out. My husband picked up the dog later in the afternoon, and brought him straight home. They didn't shave him - thank goodness - but he was charged for it. His nails were untouched, his ears dirty, and his coat greasy and covered in dandruff. Perhaps he had been brushed, but that's being generous. We put him in the tub here at the house and the water running off him was brown. Clearly he hadn't been bathed. $32 for a cheap fabric remnant bandana and a spritz of cologne. read more
