I have been trying to purchase a dog training package at this location for weeks. Tried purchasing online and I keep getting an error message. It's not user-error, as I've attempted from multiple different devices with no success. So I attempted to purchase and schedule the training sessions by calling the store directly. When I did so, they told me I had to purchase online or come into the store to purchase training sessions. I told the guy about the website issue and that I wasn't able to purchase online, his response was that "he's not concerned about the website and has nothing to do with it". So I drove 25 minutes to the store to make the purchase. Once at the store they told me I could only purchase training sessions when the trainer is at the store. How do these people make money, I give up... read more

A decent Petco in the area. There was a grooming and adoption area. I can't say much about those services since I haven't used it. The store was organized and well stocked. You can find all of your pet needs there. I decided to check out the pet section for my toddler since he loves hamsters.They had a pretty big fish section. They had a bunch of beta fishes separate from the others for obvious reasons. There was a bird cage with a few beautiful parakeets. There were plenty of guinea pigs, ferrets, mice, rats, gerbils, and hamsters. The animals looked well fed and the cages were clean. read more

This Petco is located between Puerto Vallarta and Staples in Avon, although each is stand alone and has space between the buildings. Parking is decent for space. As Petco is where the pets go, there is grass in front of the store with two poop bag stations and a trash can. Inside, most of the space is the store, but the grooming station was open with dogs being attended to, and there were signs for training classes available. I may have been here on an off day, but this Petco is cluttered in terms of supplies. There were a lot of carts out with stock, some even blocking the shelves. A lot of areas will need facing, although the food sections were really well maintained. More importantly, the living animals also looked well maintained. Their cages were clean with food and water clearly available. They were all doing their thing - turtles crawling into water, snakes hiding, mice running on their toys, and canaries tweeting suspiciously. read more

The staff of Petco Avon were nice. However - my attempts to return an on-line purchase were a joke. Never buy on-line from Petco if you may have to return the item. I had the product in my hand, had the order number and fed-ex proof of delivery. But they said their system didn't show the product had shipped. After 45 minutes of waiting while the manager called some centeral customer support office - I had to leave the store with a product I don't want because someone on their end didn't do something correctly and they cannot prove I have the product. A complete joke - and a complete rip off. How many other people have been forced to keep on-line purchases???? read more

I brought my pup for a bath and a haircut at Petco of Avon for his scheduled time at 1:15. The young man at grooming immediately took him in, and we discussed how short he should go. He also wanted to see his most up to date Rabies vaccine. He said he would call me when he's ready in around three hours. So I went around town to do some errands. I got the call around 4:00 that he's ready and I could pick him up. I couldn't wait to see his fresh new summer haircut! I was so, so very embarrassed with what the groomer told me. He said they couldn't cut around his face, he was way too aggressive. He really isn't an aggressive dog at all. He's had most of his teeth removed, so couldn't be aggressive by biting. I thought they did a great job on his body, and he smelled so fresh and clean. His head was a bit uneven because he was wiggly. They didn't charge me for this haircut, that was pretty embarrassing too, they worked on him for a long time. They didn't even want to accept my tip. I truly appreciate their honesty and their hard work. I'm going to work on fixing the unevenness my self. I recommended Petco of Avon even if I won't be returning here. They are hard working and honest. If your pup could sit still it'll be so much easier for everyone. read more

I bought a betta fish from Petco in Avon, CT in April. He died August 6th and the necropsy report said it was from multiple parasitic and bacterial infections. I went to the store and the Aquatics specialist told me it was a breeder issue and was very helpful. I was told that my snail could be returned for adoption. When I returned my snail today I asked a different employee to speak to someone in the Aquatics department. The response I was given was "if you're just giving it up for adoption I'll float it for you and there's no need to speak to anyone in the department." Then the employee put the snail in the water filled bag on the top of the slatted part of the carriage where it started to slip off and said " don't worry, I'm almost done stacking these products and I'll put her in after." I waited 20 minutes while shopping for new tank equipment and never saw my snail get floated in the tanks or anyone approach the aquatic area. I had to come to the unfortunate conclusion that he flushed her because he didn't know how to take care of her. The way I was spoken too was rude and showed a lack of professionalism and empathy towards the customer in a difficult situation. The fact that management is aware that they are buying from dealers who are inbreeding fish on purpose to make them more colorful while damaging their health and not telling this to customers is unethical and unacceptable. I will not be buying anymore fish from this store after being treated this way. read more

Never going back again, and will tell all my neighbors and coworkers to stay away until they have complete turn over of the grooming staff. Today, we took our Maltese to the Avon Petco for only the second time since moving to Bloomfield two years ago. We are either cursed, or they assign the worst groomer for infrequent customers. After a disastrous first experience in 2020, we've been avoiding the Avon location like the plague until this time, because there were no other alternative locations with available appointments within a few weeks. This time, my wife even showed a photo of our dog with desired look, and specifically told the groomer (Leanne) to leave the ear hair long. Amazingly, they failed us again. When my wife and I adopted our rescue Rocket we brought him to Petco in Avon for his first grooming ever in his life and he literally loves the place now - of course he is a loud mouth and loves to bark and cause trouble but his groomer Alaina takes her care to the next level. She has worked with Rocket for MONTHS to get him used to grooming and it's still a work in progress! We brought our golden retriever in for a TRIM since we couldn't get an appointment with our other groomer. The man shaved him down and left patches when he shaved so close you can see his skin. My husband brought our Portuguese Water Dog to be groomed at this place because our regular groomer is temporarily closed. What a MISTAKE! The groomer there asked whether to cut her to 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch. Huh? My husband clearly had no clue, but any experienced groomer should have known that neither length was appropriate for a wavy-haired dog of this breed. My poor, normally fluffy pet was shaved so short that she looks like a hideous, hairless freak. She will also probably need to wear a sweater for months because the summer is over and she is almost BALD! I will never go to this place again and suggest everyone else avoid it too. read more

I used to shop here for my fish for years. The aquatic specialist, Bob, was very knowledgeable and I had a great relationship with him. When he left a young girl took over, which at first I was skeptical about because she seemed so young and I didnt think shed have much experience but she turned out to be very knowledgeable as well. I had some weird things growing off my shrimp, and she was able to identify it as vorticella and told me she had dealt with an outbreak in her breeding tank before and taught me how to take care of it. She was very enthusiastic about fish and seemed to care a lot, and it was good to see another passionate fish keeper working there. Unfortunately she no longer works there, and there is a new guy that took over the aquatic department. His name is Kyle or Kevin I think. He does a good job at keeping the tanks looking clean, but that's about it. I had bought some shrimp that had the same parasite, so I came back to get the stuff the girl recommended because it worked well the first time but I couldn't remember what exactly it was. I asked him, and he told me shrimp cant get parasites. I showed him some research I did on it and he told me hes been doing this for years, hes the specialist and knows what hes talking about. I ended up going to Blake's aquaden for help instead. Then I went there again recently, and I asked about some sick and dead bettas I saw. Plenty with swim bladder disorder. He told me that "unfortunately fish die" sarcastically, and said that he'll give all the bettas frozen peas to help with the swim bladder disorder. I told him I have read that doesnt help with bettas and can make them worse, he again told me he knows what hes talking about and that he's very knowledgeable. I fact checked myself when I got home and learned I was correct. He also gave me some incorrect information about other fish, the size they grow to, their temperaments, etc. And it's a good thing I've been in this hobby long enough to know he isnt right, because he could kill off someone's fish with this bad advice! It makes me sad that they replaced enthusiasts with people that dont care. If petco isnt going to hire people already in the hobby, the least they can do is hire someone willing to learn and improve their advice!! Brought our 13 year old blind & diabetic dog for grooming and this is what they did to her-see pic. No one called to say she was ready. Dog panting and acting injured upon pick up. Bleeding signifcantly from her hind quarters at home. We called to complain and "John" yelled at my wife, stated "Don't ever bring your dogs here again" Instead of taking responsbility, he tried to say it happened somewhere else and denied that they had anything to do with it ! I really do enjoy this Petco, and despite the bad reputation that big name pet stores have, I'd have to say this one is set apart, in a good way. First off, the staff is great, I've always been offered help, and never treated badly. They take coupons without a hassle and nothing has ever rung up wrong at the register. I've bought multiple animals and fish from here and each one of them has been healthy and lived as long as the average! Lastly, the place is clean. It's VERY clean and organized and I really just like to go here and browse. I have always found everything I've needed here, apart from after hurricane Sandy when their headquarters was shut down so their shipments were delayed. And really, who would blame them for that? We always feel comfortable leaving our fur babies and know they are in great hands! Terrible! We've taken our dog here about 5 times to be groomed and we always say we're not going back, but this time we really aren't. We dropped our dog off at 12noon as instructed and asked them to pluck his ears and cut his hair leaving about an inch. We never received a call saying he was ready so I stopped in at about 5pm after work. I was told he wasn't ready and I didn't see him in any of the cages, so I asked where he was. The girl I was speaking with didn't know, so I went closer to the window and looked down. There he was on the floor all by himself tehered to a table. A little of his hair had been cut, but basically he looked exactly the same. I was then told the groomer "taking care" of my dog was in the parking lot. I went and sat outside for at least 10 minutes and watched as this girl talked to someone who appeared to be a significant other. I had also been told my dog wouldn't be ready for another 45 minutes to an hour. When I returned to pick him up his ears hadn't been plucked and apparently he hadn't been walked because as soon as he got outside he just peed and peed and peed. The groomer overcharged us, didn't do the job and was completely unapologetic. She said they had 10 dogs to do that day as if that was the reason my dog wasn't attended to or groomed properly. My suggestion if you're looking for a groomer? Keep looking and don't go to Petco in Avon, CT. read more

I got my froggie here a couple months ago and I went to ask some questions. The guy that they called over to help was pompous and to rude and was talking down to me the whole time. He made me feel so stupid after just asking a simple care question for my frog. I wanted to just walk out and never come here again but it's so close and everyone else is so kind. That gUy seems new and a little full of himself. He also gave me false info about my frog that I had found out before anything happened thank goodness. I think he needs to have a talk with the manager and caLm down. MeAnwhile, before he started to even talk to me after they called him to help me, hE kept talking to a woman he stopped to ...flirt(?) with. Hands-down the BEST Petco in Connecticut. The fish tanks are always immaculate, including the betta cups, which always have clean, fresh water and are aerated frequently. The reptile section is great, with 99% of species having the proper husbandry, from temperatures and specialized lighting to substrate and cage decorations. The reptiles are always fed properly, with omnivorous lizards being offered calcium and multivitamin dusted insects and fresh produce daily. Reptile staff ask every prospective customer questions about the animal they are considering and offer information before agreeing to sell an animal.
