The short: I'm SO glad I decided to take it to Performance Motorcycles on Gilman in Berkeley! The Long: I have a 2001 Yamaha Roadstar that hadn't started in years. I couldn't figure out the issue and it sat (with gas...) I don't know how long. Finally getting real about the time I have to work on it, I called. They deciphered the issue (cracked rubber intake), rebuilt the carb, did the rear brakes (I had none), flushed the lines, replaced tires/tubes. Of course, that's a lot of work and pricey, but it is on the road again and ran great on a trip to the wine country. (Even got to put my new Edward Richie custom sissy bar on.) I had a 2002 Honda CBR1100XX that no one wanted to work on because of its age. Performance Motorcycle gave me the tune up I needed and at a reasonable price. Fast forward and I have a new bike. The dealer's shop rate is over $200/hour, while PM is still $150. I needed new tires, a new chain and sprockets, and to put the stock exhaust back on as I did not like the aftermarket exhaust the previous owner put on. Time and cost for the tires and chain/sprocket were already known, but [[HIGHLIGHT]]Susan was unsure of how long the exhaust work would take. I recently just purchased a 2019 ktm smc r with 196 miles I rode it another 200 miles and it began to leak oil from a unknown place to me. I'm a retuning customer to this shop, since motopia in San Rafael did refused to fix my tire before they have gone out of business. I like to have off-road tires on my dual sport bike. Knowing this would be a challenge to find the right tires, it took them 4 minutes to choose the right one and I LOVE them. I've ordered the tires on a Saturday with installation for the following Saturday, I got a conformation call Friday morning! During installation, they called and asked, if I want my brakes fluid replaced and my oil changed. Twice, I've taken my 5th gen VFR to Performance Motorcycle and both times have been extraordinarily pleased with the service I've received. Today's visit was simply amazing: I was unable to find anyone locally in the North Bay to do the job, crunched for time, and yet needed safety-critical work for an upcoming ride I didn't want to miss. Not only did they catch another significant deferred maintenance issue, but they still got me in & out on time. And not only was all the work fairly priced, but they also steered me toward a lesser-priced part option when I would have unquestionably paid 50% more -- a grain of salt with which to consider other, more cynical reviews. It's not easy to find a good shop to work on an older motorcycle, even if it's in fine shape. So grateful to the good folks at Performance Motorcycle. Highly recommended! read more

Beware of this place. They lie to you and they falsify the report pretending they did the work and then they rip you off and take your money... and then they give you a non sens excuses. Too my bike in for a 15000 miles service; as we know, brakes are critical to safety, they put in the report no need to replace and they're at 70%. 4 weeks later the pad is gone and the metal scraping against the rotor that resulted in damaging it and putting me and my motorcycle at high risque. Oh, and also they charged me $800 to replace the fluids. Big rip off and unreliable and untrustworthy. I'ld not recommande this shop to any follow rider. Don't go there. read more

In my experience take this place with a grain of salt depending on what you need done and complication of the job. The mechanic (Sal) doesn't inspire much confidence in terms of troubleshooting before deciding to add on more parts/labor. Went against his own words the following day saying it needs the part that supposedly causes leaks and makes the problem worse. Citing a potential problem that wasn't there when the bike was brought in. Ultimately the parts were installed and operational but getting to that point was a process, hence the 3 star rating. I inquired about installing some steel braided brake lines and get calipers rebuilt on my 109R and am told the mechanic who works there is good at working on my particular model bike. Ive purchased the brand new parts for the job (caliper rebuild kits, master cylinder rebuilt kit and Galfer steel brake lines). Speaking with mechanic before starting the service I'm told usually after installing the master cylinder rebuilt kit the master cylinder tends to leak brake fluid in their experience (?). So we agree to just get calipers rebuilt and brake lines installed. I get a text near end of day saying after installing the lines the brakes still aren't holding pressure and I'll need to order a new master cylinder or bring in the rebuild kit. Again being told earlier earlier that day that it was not needed and would cause leaks if installed. I go in person the next day and explain the bike had no leaks at the master cylinder when I brought it in and noticed no leaks as I pressed the brake lever, just sponginess. Also pointed out again that what their suggesting regarding the master cylinder could make the problem worse. They then claimed the new brake lines are defective, at which point I asked them to just install the old lines back on. At this point I was seriously questioning Sals troubleshooting skills. They called me back saying they ultimately got rid of the sponginess and the bike was ready to go with the new parts installed. However, this backpedaling on their own advice and claiming defective parts when they weren't, trying to throw more parts at it (which ultimately wasn't needed) to see if it fixed the problem, made me lose faith in this shop. This is all after being told he's good at these kind of bikes. The job was completed, but can be done more competently elsewhere in my experience working with different shops. In response to Susan: The brakes were working fine when I brought the bike to you with no fluid leaks. I've had the bike for only 2 months when I decided to swap the lines. Even if they were messed up as a shop I'd expect it to be fixed which in fairness ultimately it was. Just how it was handled made me concerned. And badmouthing me to other shops after me leaving an honest review is in very bad taste especially for a so called business owner. read more

Perhaps it was an honest mistake (well, several of them), but it felt like they were trying to rip me off -- they told me I needed parts and repairs I didn't need and quoted very high labor prices. I brought in a 2002 VFR 800 for an inspection, as the bike was garaged for a few years. They gave me a long list of repairs they said I needed, and the prices quoted for labor seemed suspiciously high to me. They said I needed a whole new charging system, including the battery (which I had just replaced, but they said was ruined by the bad charging system already), and that the system could completely fail at any moment. I'm no expert, but I minored in electrical engineering, and the bit about the battery made me especially suspicious. For the battery they quoted me $225 just for the part, though I bought mine for $150 right down the street a month before. They said I needed new sprockets and a new chain, too. For a second opinion, I took it to KC Engineering in SF. They said the charging system is ok and is not about to fail, the battery is good as new, the sprockets are fine, the chain does not need replacing. They also charged me *much* less for the work it did need than Performance Motorcycle quoted me. Perhaps it was an honest mistake or difference of opinion, though I can't help but suspect they were going to try to rip me off and over-charge for repairs I didn't need. I suspect I sounded ignorant to them, as some parts they mentioned I hadn't heard of. I may not be up with the times, but I rode for 25 years and used to maintain my old Hondas myself. They sounded fishy to me which is why I took it elsewhere for a second opinion. They replied to this Yelp review in an unkind, unprofessional way, randomly insulting how I maintain my bike (which I just bought, and brought to them to possibly help me maintain it). And they claimed they didn't say my charging system might fail at any moment which, of course, they did. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place! I brought in my FJR 1300 for exploded fork seals that were a mess, all over my front brakes. Also had them do oil, brakes, and a checkover to make sure this bike could handle some upcoming long rides. They also caught little things like a dent in one rim and told me to watch it to be sure tire pressure wasn't leaking out. I hadn't even noticed things that small. I'm super happy with the service and fast turnaround. The total price was right at the estimate, no surprises. They were friendly, and super knowledgeable. Extremely professional service! Even before I brought my bike to the shop, the two individuals I spoke with over the phone were very informative and helpful. When I got to the shop the technician who worked on my bike was enthusiastic and glad to help, despite it being slightly past closing time. Only good for low-tech problems These guys try hard, but they are under-tooled for 21st century bikes. They don't have a diagnostic computer so they cannot solve fuel/air/spark problems on EFI bikes. I brought my 2009 Bonneville in for a simple service (replace a torn intake hose). When they got the bike together, one of the cylinders was running grotesquely rich. After fooling around for several days, they still couldn't figure out where they'd gone wrong, so I got the hell outta there. Bottom line, if you own a bike made in the last 10 years, only take it to Performance for the simple sh*t. read more

WARNING - BEWARE OF THIS PLACE POOR SERVICE DO NOT USE THIS SHOP WHAT A WASTE OF TIME. I had an oil service done and afterwards my bike was leaking oil. I brought it back in and they checked the work they did. It is now leaking again. They are asking me to come back a 3rd time. NOT A CHANCE. They gave me a whole list of excuses as to why my bike is still leaking oil. They did not offer a reasonable solution to diagnose the issue. I wanted to give them another chance, so I asked for them to do the oil change over. I even offered to pay for a new filter. The owner did not want to work things out with me. I have lost confidence in this shop. I have owned many bikes and have used them before in the past. I will now take my bike to a more proffesional shop. They have lost another customer. I really tried to support a local business. They WILL NOT ACCEPT resposability for the POOR work they did. read more

3/5 stars due to staff was nice and decent turn out. Although the service requested wasn't done right. Brought my track bike forks to have new seals and oil replaced. Took it to the track and it felt off during each session. Had a suspension tech check my forks and it was found that the forks had too much oil. Had the tech pull apart my forks during the track day and found that yes there was too much oil in the forks. Certain areas were not greased and the fork caps were impacted tight. read more

They refuse to admit when they have made an error. My bike had a big problem that would it prevent it from running properly and they did not mention it when i was spoke to them about repairs (on the phone and via email). When io come for pick up it is listed on the work order but I am not a professional so I have no idea that the repair and parts are needed operationally (That's why I am paying them as professional! Two days later the bike isn't running and I call to inquire and am told it is due to the issue and that it was listed on the work order?? Why the hell would you not let me know this? I would have gotten the issue addressed before I even picked the cycle up! Now I have to shell out more money and go through the time and expense of getting the bike back to a shop so it will run properly. They refuse to give me a discount to make up for their negligence and eventually told me to go someplace else!! This is not only shady but terrible customer service. This place put my life in danger by putting the wrong break fluid in, subsequently causing my rear break to lock up suddenly on the freeway leaving me stuck in traffic. They admitted fault and said they would pay for repair. BUT 2 weeks later, when I was done the owner DENIED FAULT and she said I had to pay in full. I didn't make serious complaint when it first happened and am not quick to anger. I didn't ask for them to reimburse my transportation and wages lost due to this. I didn't threaten them with a bad review or anything further, so maybe they thought it was a good idea to try and take one over on me. I do not recommend taking your bike for repairs here.
