First tried Pepper Lunch in Japan years before it came to America, and was of course excited when it opened here. Over the years, the meat portions have noticeably decreased and rice proportion increased (shrinkflation). It's understandable, and prices haven't increased much compared to other restaurants. Still a great meal with fast, friendly service and a comfortable casual atmosphere

I haven't had Pepper Lunch in years (the last time was in NorCal) and I was craving it, so I decided to stop by. I was surprised (and lowkey disappointed) that there wasn't an udon option anymore.. I ordered the Kimchi Beef Rice with cheese, and unfortunately the meat-to-rice ratio was really disappointing. For $18, it felt like I was mostly paying for a plate of rice and kimchi. The beef pieces were tiny and there were probably only about 6-8 pieces total. I wanted to love it for the nostalgia, but this visit didn't quite hit the same. I will not be back.

My first time trying Pepper Lunch for dinner. There was just a little wait for a Saturday dinner. The ambiance is casual and cozy. We ordered the beef pepper lunch. The food came quickly, smelled really amazing. After adding the garlic sauce and some black pepper, it was even better. The portion is perfect for a hearty dinner. I will come back to try other entree, the pasta dish looks great too.

Came here craving Pepper Lunch and the food itself was solid--flavors were good, though we can understand concerns about the small meat portions. The really negative part of our visit was witnessing one of the workers drop a fork on the floor and then put it back with the clean utensils. That's just not safe and really disappointing to see. Because of that, we won't be coming back.

While it's a fun concept, i probably wouldn't come often due to value. The meal itself is 75% rice and a whole piece of butter to make it flavorful. I took out most of the butter - just a little of it was enough to make it taste good. The regular only gives you 2-3 pieces of meat. It just looks like more because they are long and stretched around. Staff was nice though!

Wow so delicious! Never heard of this place but decided to try it out. Really love this place. Food itself is simple (rice and meat) but the hot stone and the food is exceptional. I ordered the hamburg and beef curry. Portion size is good amount but I find the price to be a bargain. I could see other places charge more for this type of meal. What I didn't like was that they provided us with fork and spoon but no knife. I needed that knife to slice my hamburg. Also there's assigned seatings, they told us to sit at a particular table when the restaurant literally just opened and all tables are empty. Also drank water from the fountain machine, has a taste to it when it's not supposed to. Would definitely recommend and will come back.

I stopped by Pepper Lunch for dinner and tried the Tofu & Veggie Curry. When my plate came out, I noticed that the carrots and green beans had freezer burn. The curry sauce was very salty and the food did not have any flavor to it. For the price point, I do wish that the ingredients were fresh and had some sort of flavor. There is plenty of seating and the staff is very nice but I don't think that I will be returning.

Solid, tasty, no frills, satiating, and affordable place to get a meal. It's straightforward, comforting, and delicious. The ones in Asia do taste slightly better for some reason, not sure why but I would say the ones American still aren't far off. Good spot for a quick bite without breaking the bank.

Came here as a party of 2 for the pepper lunch and it did not disappoint. The food came out within a few minutes, and the staff were super kind and friendly. The food was given in large portions and all super fresh. We got the steak and salmon, and it was full of flavor (the butter and pepper helps!). I love this place and frequent Pepper Lunches in Singapore, so it was a wonderful first US experience at a Pepper Lunch.

There is a free public parking lot down first on the south side of main. You can easily walk to the restaurant from there. The ordering process is a little confusing because they have kiosks which tell you not to touch them and serve only as a menu. You order at the register and then are seated at numbered tables where they bring you your food. The order takers and servers are mostly friendly and efficient. Restrooms are in the back. We got the Karaage chicken and hamburger and grilled chicken breast with not hamburger and double chicken instead. As the instructions say online, you pour the side of curry over the meat and/or rice in the iron skillet and let it simmer a little before eating. The karaage chicken was like panda orange chicken and the grilled chicken was superior. It is basically like having katsu curry but healthier without the fried katsu. The portion is enough for two meals if you are not super hungry and sufficient if you are hungry. The drink selection is somewhat limited. As others have said you might be able to get veggies instead of rice, but those on Keto or low carb should consider that curry is NOT a low carb food and does NOT work with Keto or low carb diets. We definitely would come here again to get a health alternative to katsu curry.

The food at Pepper Lunch is really good, but I think you're really just paying for the spectacle of it. It's cool to see and hear the sizzling hot plate come out with the raw meat that you need to turn over yourself. But when it comes down to it, it's rice and meat and some vegetables. And not even combined in a complex way. The quality is there for sure, and it tastes good. But when it comes down to it, I feel like it's really easy to recreate the same dish at home. I will say, it was a pleasant surprise how saucy everything becomes when you mix it together. I was worried everything would be too dry. But they do include some compound butter that sauces everything up.

Overhyped and overrated. Definitely not worth the wait and the price. Take some hotpot meat you can get anywhere, add a bowl of rice, toss some canned corn and green onions on top, throw it all on a stick of butter on a hot cast iron plate and you've basically got the classic beef. Pepper Lunch!!!! If you know you know! Am I right?! It lives up to the name!! Opened where the old poke joint was on the corner of Garfield and Main Street across from the new plaza. The parking is everywhere! Utilize the new Alhambra public parking lot in front of the public library/city hall. The price is around 13-15 dollars depending on what you decide to add. Their curry is delicious especially on a sizzling grill!! I did enjoy the curry better than their standard beef dish. The sweet potato fries is a must!!! Though the reason why I gave them four instead of five is because our fries were forgotten and were given to us after our meal. The concept is too order on the iPad and they will bring the food to your table. read more

ive been wanting to try this place for a while and i'm glad i did. they put their dishes on skillets which i thought was very cool and unique. the kimchi chicken with cheese pepper rice was very flavorful. the cheese paired perfectly with the refreshing kimchi. also i liked how the cheese and rice were crispy from the skillet. however, i wished there was more meat since they only put a few pieces around the outside. other than that, i enjoyed this place very much and i think everyone should at least try it once! read more

Very creative menu.. the food is delicious. The seating is a little problematic. The automated menu is not that user friendly if needed changes from the standard fare like less salt, it was a bit challenging. The place is definitely worth a try. Try to get there b4 rush hour. read more

This place was recommended to me by my friends. I honestly enjoy how cool it is that you get to see yourself cook it. They are usually busy and sometimes people are lining up. I usually order a combo as combos includes drink and I recommend ordering combos too. I would included fries in my order as sides. Their customer service is good and the staff are all really nice. I also liked how they have a stamp card reward system! Give it a try if you haven't. read more

Before quarantine started, I went to pepper lunch a couple of times and all of my experiences were great! I think it's really cool that you can watch your food cook in front of you. I got one of the pasta meals and it was so delicious! I wish I could go get some right now. Parking was a little bit hard to find here but maybe it was because I came at a bad time. The food came out super quickly too so I would give the service a 10/10. If you're around main street and can't decide what to eat, you should give pepper lunch a shot! read more

Just went to Pepper Lunch again for dinner... this time on a Saturday. Got there just past 5PM, plenty of tables available. The server even suggested we sit down first before ordering. I ordered a kimchee chicken pepper rice this time, it tasted pretty good! My daughter ordered a standard pepper rice, but with added cheese, and she liked it better than the last time as well. I think next time I'll order the Angus steak and New York steak combo! That looks REALLY good! read more

Im sad to give PL a low rating because I loved it in HK and Cupertino. But the new menu and set up of the business (at least at this location) is just really weird and the food was not up to par! The serving was smaller than it should have been and the mushroom pasta I ordered came with watery cream sauce. The only thing my bf and I liked was their curry which doesnt taste like the roux cubes you get from Mitsuwa. Overall, id try again and maybe itll be better next time. read more

So I've always seen pepper lunch all over my IG and Snapchat before when they only had the location in OC. However I found out they opened one up on Alhambra! So I brought my fav big sis to try the "hype" with me! When we arrived we found parking right away at the structure(that was amazing), walked and was greeted by couple workers then we ordered at the IPAD. Ok on my topping I wanted extra corn and onions and add mushrooms but mine came with no mushrooms and no onion. My big sis ordered the curry hamburger steak kind and her curry was SALTY. Definitely a no. I felt bad because I really talked highly of this place despite the fact of ever trying just seeing all over social media's. So ya we were pretty disappointed. My food came out good 10 min before hers so when she received her orders I was finished so we couldn't really ask them to make her a brand new one because we were on our work break. Oh well maybe next time we'll give it another shot since they just recently opened up. read more

This place is a great spot to hang out with your friends and enjoy a meal. The portions are not really filling. You're kinda paying for the rice but it's really good. The service is all self service. The prices here are kinda high for the amount of food they give you. But totally try it out if you're in the area. read more

My first impression is cool concept! Sizzling plates bring me back to Asian cafe days when I use to order sizzling beef udon and oh how I miss it so much. Now that everything they serve here comes out on a sizzling plate makes it that much sweeter. Presentation is great the food comes out quick. I got the KimChi beef with cheese rice and it was pretty good. Wifey opted for the RibEye and she was happy! Will recommend this place to friends and family. read more

Ok bit confused at first. Didn't get why photos had raw meat it. Well I should have known! Served on a hot sizzling plate that continues to cook your meat. You select how you want it. Served steaming hot rice! Had seafood rice But skimpy on the proteins but makes sense not that's pricy. Fun and delicious! read more

We mainly ordered sushi, but their hand rolls were good, their garlic edamame was really good and I also enjoyed their Hamachi collar. I was also surprised to find their yellow sushi to be very fresh and sweet. Highly recommend this place and would suggest coming in between rush hour so that you can be seated quickly. We found parking in the structure next to Starbucks on main and it was a short walk to the restaurant.

They want you to do a Yelp review right away so you can get the discount promotion. I guess they want you to give them a 5-star right away. It's my first time in this restaurant and why should I give them a 5-star? I haven't tasted their food yet. I don't think it's a smart move. They should've asked customers to check-in instead of doing a yelp review when you haven't even sink your teeth into their food yet. The restaurant has TV screens displaying their foods sizzling that will make your mouth watering, but don't fall for it. Food is mediocre. I ordered the Sizzling Curry (Hamburger, sliced beef and mild curry) plus the Yelp - Free Onion rings + Reg Drink Total: $14.15 After eating the meal, I would say it's not really worth the price of $14.15. It's more of a $7 to $9 meal. The quantity of the sizzling plate is quite petite. There are 5 to 6 pieces of the onion rings. My opinion: If the restaurant wanted to offer discounts to customers, have the customers check-in instead of having them giving stars and writing reviews on yelp. The moment i walked in to pick up my phone order, the cashier freaked out on me because i accidentally walked into the exit, rather than their designated "entrance" side door, which i had no idea about since it was my first time being here. The first thing she told me was about this door... i felt so unwelcome. The portion and price was disappointing af... i can't believe this is a jumbo classic beef... very disappointed & i feel this place is OVERHYPED. Even the add-on pricing online was $0.50-$0.75 cheaper than it actually is when i made my order over the phone... online they said mushroom + cheese was $1.00 add on only, it ended up being $1.50 for mushroom, $1.75 for cheese.... and they didn't even make sure i was ok with the add-on price. i'm so shook and never wanna come back again. They are finally here! I enjoyed Pepper Lunch very much in Japan when I was in hurry rushing in between sightseeing spots and didn't know what to eat. Honestly speaking, the Pepper Lunch in Japan is better, but having them here in LA is already worth going. The meat quality is not as good as in Japan, but hey, everything just taste better in Japan so there's nothing you can complain. They have the ordering machines that allow you to place order by yourself, but I found that the concept don't really work because most people don't know how to operate the machines, and sometimes it takes them so long to order, due to the fact that people tend to browse through all the images and items before making final decision. It is actually slower than ordering at the cashier. By the way, if you like the sauteed garlic butter and want more, you can always ask the staff nicely for more; I always need more than usual for my steaks. read more

The eating area is always kept tidy for the most part. My go to options are the ribeye, the big beef, or the kimchi beef sizzling platter. It comes with rice and some corn. I usually wait until the beef is cooked at least to medium well before digging in. This doesn't take too long because usually the sizzling platter is hot enough to cook it quickly. Also, most of the meat are sliced thinner so they can cook faster as well. Parking is usually in the parking lot behind the eatery or even at the parking structure if there aren't any parking lot spaces available. There wasn't a really a host, so it was basically self- seating. Because of that, they don't want you to be saving seats. I love that the menu is simple and there's not a Long list of extras because the mains and few sides are enough. It's simple and to the point. There are a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating. They have a few different sauces available on the table for your convenient use and they are pretty tasty. I personally love the one that seems heavy on the garlic. The staff are very friendly as they greeted me with kindness and explained what pepper lunch is and how their system works. I got the classic beef pepper lunch. The plate itself was still hot and the beef was cooking! By itself it's very yummy. The sauces are good too. My personal favorite is the honey soy sauce! Super fun time with my girlfriend. The concept is great and I love how simple yet tasty the food is. It cooks so fast that the line moves quickly so don't let the line stop from trying it. High quality meat, fresh veggies and great atmosphere. There was ample seating, restrooms in the back were clean and overall nice restaurant. Incredible food. The pepper is the star here.
