Moved to this area from the land of Pasta Mista. Was really looking forward to finding a good 'za place near the new digs. This Pizza is subpar. The crust is OK...a little too doughy for my liking but could have been saved by the toppings...that didn't happen. The broccoli was all (frozen?!) stalks--no heads. The sauce is aggressively sweet. Best cheesesteak in Baltimore. It used to be much more grittier, and the place has a history with associations to a Baltimore chapter of the Greek mafia (no joking, go look up stories from the mid-90s in the Archives of the Baltimore Sun). I love the delivery and convenience of this place. They still reign as the spot to go to if you live in the Lake Falls/Mount Washington/Roland Park area for a cheap, and easy meal. I would not get pizza here though. The specialties are in the subs and sandwiches. BLT here is amazing as is the Chicken Parmigiana. read more

It has been over a year since my family has eaten pizza from Pepe's, and now I remember why. My husband purchased a pepperoni pizza from them tonight, and we were beyond disappointed. The pizza was covered in grease! Now, I know that some is to be expected when you get pepperoni as a topping, but this was outrageous! The pizza was so wet and slippery, that the cheese just slid off when you tried to pick up a slice. Also, the dough was so wet and flimsy that I gave up attempting to hold a slice together. Since my husband and I hate wasting money, and since it would have been too much of a hassle to go all the way back to return the so called pizza, we decided to try to choke down some of it. We've been coming here for years. For the price, yumminess and convenience, it almost can't be beat. Cheesesteak with everything - none better. Pizza - crust is very good, sauce is tangy and bright, even better the next day if you're into that sort of thing. Second favorite pizza in Baltimore (over Hersh's, over Iggie's, over Verde, over Joe Squared -- sorry guys). Spanikopita - surprisingly good, surprisingly light. Sometimes I get the fries with gravy, not because they're perfect, but because they satisfy the deepest darkest carby urge you can have. They rock me back to my Jagermeister days. A friend and I were crusing Baltimore's fabric stores and found ourselves in need of sustenance. She had eaten at Pepe's once before, but had been really hungry on that occasion so wasn't sure if it was as good as she remembered. It seems like a family-run kind of place, the way the staff hangs out and banters. The woman taking our order was clearly a pro and got our somewhat complicated order correct (onions on only half the pizza). While we were at the register some fried mozzarella sticks crossed the counter and they looked so good we had to have them. We also got a pizza with olives, spinach, and feta cheese. The mozzarella sticks were awesome. They were not your standard frozen wholesale. I could be wrong, but they appeared to have been hand-dipped right before going in the fryer, and the breading was smooth (as opposed to the coarse grainy wholesale frozen stuff), not too thick, and nicely flavored. They came with marinara sauce for dipping. I didn't ask for Ranch (as a Texan, that is my usual dip for mozz sticks--I eat them maybe once a year, so I'm gonna indulge). They were crisp and hot and stringy but not too melty--a sign of quality cheese. The pizza was sensational. My friend and I kept debating whether it was the crust or the sauce that was so good. I said the crust: it tasted like it had a really long rise so there was lots of fermented yeasty goodness and depth to it, and it had a tiny bit of sweetness from that process and the caramelization of the hot oven. She said the sauce: it was applied with a light hand, and so it was present but not overpowering and had discernible garlic and flavor. The mozz cheese was generous and good quality, ditto the feta, and the spinach was excellent. I ate more than was good for me, and stopped only because I feared bursting my stomach. Tiny gripes: -The mozz sticks came out with the pizza (would have preferred before), and an order number was shouted but we hadn't been given a number. After a while we recognized our food and picked it up. -You can't get your own water, it comes from the fountain behind the counter in a styrofoam cup. -There is only one large shaker of pepper flakes for the entire restaurant, so you have to keep getting up to get it with each piece of pizza. read more

I love Pepe's! I work in Hampden and Pepe's is a weekly choice for me. They have a great menu but primarily use them for breakfast and lunch. The ladies at the register are friendly and work hard, the place is nice and clean and they have a cool touch screen fountain drink machine like at five guys. Ate here as a group of four. Some bites were really tasty, others were just okay. I got a tuna melt and thought it was done just right--not too greasy, not too celery-y, etc. The Western potatoes, however, looked so beautiful but then didn't have much flavor, even with some salt. Working right up the street, Pepe's becomes the all-purpose go to. Huge breakfast sandwiches? Check. Overstuffed subs for lunch? Check. New York style pizza with plenty of cheese for late afternoon meetings? Check. The menu is extensive (as are the current renovations) and parking can be tricky at lunch (use the adjacent lot immediately to the north - it's also easier to make a left turn from) but this North Baltimore spot is consistent. Whether you want eat in or take-out it'll be hot and well-made. Daily specials are numerous, ranging from ziti to classic pastrami with mustard. There's definitely something on this menu for you. The pizza is good , but can be a bit greasy, so get napkins. The staff are great, and they're working hard, so make sure you say your 'please' and 'thank you'. Our office gives this place a TON of business and everything USED to be great until lately they've changed. The delivery guy(or at least the one who delivers in Pikesville) obviously is stressed and needs help because his attitude is VERY disrespectful! What you DON'T do when a customer ask you "Are you guys super busy because I placed my order a while ago?" is tell the customer that's been waiting for their order for almost an hour and 15 minutes "Oh well it's not my fault." The food is delicious so that keeps us ordering but if this poor attitude keeps up there are other restaurants with food just as good that we can patronize. read more

Came across this place as a recommendation from Michael at "A Fabric Place" right down the road. I couldn't have been more thankful. My crew and I were borderline ravenous when we arrived and it still took us a while to get through there fairly extensive menu. We ordered a few different things. The prices are great. The food is fresh. The portions are awesome. The one item that took the cake from the spread that we had were the pizza fries. I mean THOSE PIZZA FRIES were heaven. I love cheese and can be a tad particular about any type of "loaded" fries but there were baked to perfection. Friendly service also. I' ve tried this place several times and each time I have been dissapointed. Tonight was the last night I will hold out hope for this place. Although, my co workers my rave about the food, I can only wonder what the hell are they eating. Everybody taste buds are different but the basics is not disputable. HOT food should be HOT. I ordered carryout. A cheesesteak, fries, and soda. The fries were warm and the sub was cold. As soon as i felt the sandwich, I knew it was not going to be good. I don't enjoy pizza more than when I have it from here: the sauce is perfectly tangy, the cheese is gooey and classic (a tad oily at times), and the crust is medium-crispy. Having tried the various gourmet/experimental pizzas in the Baltimore metro area, I much prefer the straightforwardness of Pepes. Perhaps I wish they had an array of toppings to choose from, but each and every time I choose to order from them, I am pleased. Nice atmosphere to sit and relax in. However, recently if I sit near the restrooms I can smell the commercial antiseptic cleaner or air "freshener" they're using in there. Can't eat in those seats anymore. Food is decent, but prices have been raised twice I think since the renovation and some items are overpriced in my opinion. (and in some cases, the increases are not on the overhead menu) It's hard to get lunch and get out of there for under $10 or $12.00. It helps that you get free refills on drinks, but I can't leave a tip if I'm going to be charged these prices. Seems they're catering to the private school families now and have forgotten about Medfield middle-class residents who aren't so far away. read more

I visited to buy chicken and I looked in the glass case and saw the chicken was old and dried up. I like legs and wings so I asked if there was freshly made chicken and was told not for an hour. I ordered a 4 piece and asked for two breasts because of the old legs and wings and the breasts did not look the same...I was told they could not do that in a very nasty tone. I said well the chicken you have is not good and they acknowledged and still refuse to sell me the chicken. I feel that was poor customer service and someone needs to tell management that no matter how good your food is if you don't have good customer service your business won't last. In a town full of good pizza joints and sub shops, Pepe's really stands out. Their pizza has never disappointed--nice chewy crust covered in a pleasantly sweet tomato sauce and plenty of cheese and fresh toppings. The gigantic subs are even better--the Italian cheese steak (my favorite) is stuffed to the gills with steak, mozzarella, onions, peppers, and marinara. I've also eaten breakfast there a few times and have never been disappointed with the quality of the food. If there is one complaint I have about Pepe's, however, it's the eat-in service. Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong menu items, but EVERY time I've tried to eat-in I end up waiting 15-20 minutes to get my food. On two separate occasions, I've had to watch members of my party finish their meals before I was even been served my food. Granted, the place can get busy, but there really isn't any excuse that type of wait in a short-order diner. Fortunately, carry-out has never been a problem so I guess I'll just stick with that. read more

This place was great. I went there to use the rest room initially. My dog was having surgery and the vet wouldn't let me use theirs. My husband and I were hungry and when we saw their menu and the number of people picking up food we decided to eat. We both had double burgers and country fries. My wife and I have been going to Pepe's many many times and were always satisfied and well fed But today Saturday, 19 November was a disaster.. My wife ordered a salad and I ordered a Hot Beef with fries and gravy. After waiting 25 minutes I went to the counter and asked about my order and was told the kitchen was backed up. I saw a lot of food piled up on the counter and asked them to look. My order Number was 13 and they were calling 22, 23, 24.The pulled my order and gave it to me. The hot Beef was stone cold. I asked them to heat it and after waiting another 8 to 10 minutes asked for my order. They gave it to me and by then i said put a cover on it and I'll take it home which I did. I don't know what caused the backup as the kitchen personnel were working hard as usual but several other customers were also complaining. Anyhow after my bitching We will be back. Cranky, crabby, grouchy. They make the Soup Nazi look like Kermit the Frog. Beyond that, their bacon, egg, and cheese on toast is pretty good and consistent for a fast breakfast - and reasonably priced at $4. Their pizza is decent. Typical carry-out pizza.
