We had an extremely disappointing experience with Pep Boys in Gilbert, AZ, and I would strongly caution others before doing business here. We purchased a set of tires for our small travel trailer about two months ago. We were specifically replacing our existing tires due to age--not wear--so it was important to us that we receive newer inventory. After getting the tires home, we discovered they were already four years old. Unfortunately, that wasn't the only issue. The tires were initially installed with the wrong valve stems, forcing my husband to go to another auto parts store to purchase the correct ones and bring them back for installation. On top of that, we were charged for tire balancing--a service that was never performed--requiring yet another trip back to the store to have it corrected. After finally getting everything sorted, we discovered the age of the tires and immediately contacted the store. We were then informed that the store itself cannot issue refunds, and that only the District Office has the authority to do so. We attempted to escalate the issue by contacting the district manager multiple times, but our calls went unanswered and voicemails were never returned. We also spoke with the store's service manager, John, who repeatedly assured us we would hear back soon. Nearly two months later, we have received no follow-up and no resolution. This experience has been incredibly frustrating. Between selling old inventory at full price, failing to complete paid services, and providing little to no customer support afterward, this location has completely lost our trust. We will not be returning to this Pep Boys location, and based on this experience and the company's policies, we will not do business with Pep Boys again. We strongly recommend taking your business to a reputable tire shop that stands behind its products and services. read more

I've never been so disgusted in my entire life. The entire process was a nightmare. Store manager Yvonne didn't tell me the real information first off and she lied saying she was going to a parts store for a part (i came in w a flat tire, and was willing to spend more) but after 4 failed attempts of communication with me no call backs and then Yvonne leaves without any information and no one even seems to know what is really going on or how to work in service knows then get this, they call me ex husband and not me Also the guy at the counter ARON looks like meth addict and he was one of the most ignorant and uneducated person I've ever met. He threw up his hands when i asked for the invoice or estimate and shouted... "all you people just think we're ripping them off. Pathetic!" That's your employee. I will never come back and either will any family or friends I've never felt more disgusted in my life. Oh ya get this my little girl was standing right next to me and heard everything. Just disgusting! What a waste of my time. You all should be ashamed and fired that ARON soon as possible and maybe get the store manager some help and trained. I have brought my car here a few times for tires and I have always had a good experience. Friday my rear tire decoded to pop and I made a next day appointment for 9am. Booking online was super duper easy and I arrived at 9am Saturday. I was helped right away as there was no else there. The employee went outside, did a check on my tires, and came in with an update. I ended up replacing all 4 as I really don't remember how old my tires were and they were looking rough..... hehe oops. I left my car and around noon I got a text that it was ready to be picked up. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. I never leave reviews, but our experience was so poor that I feel the need to. We took my car in because the AC wasn't working. They indicated we needed a new compressor, which they put in. I noticed a rattling noise started after that but wasn't sure at the time what it was related to. They called my husband a week later to tell us they randomly found a part in their garage that they THINK belongs to my car and may have forgotten to put it back in. It was the return hose from the radiator to the coolant reservoir.....in Phoenix....in June where temps reached 104 that week. Leaving this part out of my car could have been detrimental to my engine and they are really lucky that they didn't need to replace my engine. That ALONE should have been enough for us to get refunded, but we were nice and didn't make a fuss and figured they'd put the part back and we'd go on our way. The rattling continues and we bring the car back AGAIN. Now they tell us the new compressor they put in is defective so they need to put in another one. They do, we pick it up, and we realize it's in fact not blowing cold air at all. So yet AGAIN, we go back and they tell us it must be another defective compressor. The likelihood that TWO defective compressors from DIFFERENT vendors ended up in one car is very low. The much more likely possibility is that they do poor work, especially considering they're forgetting to put vital parts back in cars. They say they'll put factory parts in, but we decided we don't trust them to touch our car anymore. We were promised a FULL refund as long as we brought them back the compressor they put in. We did just that and then after they had their equipment back, they decide to tell us they are only refunding us for the parts and not the $1,000 of labor because we "voided the labor warranty when we went to the dealership." So, not only did they continuously do a terrible job and NOT FIX THE ISSUE, but they misled us by saying we'd get a full refund and then went back on their word as soon as they got their equipment back. The dealership ran a dye test and said the AC system was leaking EVERYWHERE and also indicated that that type of compressor simply did not work for my car because it created too much pressure on the low pressure side. Incredibly poor work and ridiculous customer care. The manager there then proceeded to argue with me that it's not their job to know which compressors may or may not work in certain cars....YOUR WHOLE JOB IS TO KNOW CARS. They seem to operate on the very unethical principle of putting parts in cars and crossing their fingers that it works out. We were more than nice, understanding, and willing to have them continue working on our car after they forgot to put a part back in and after the first defective compressor, but come on, for them to expect that we'd ever let them touch our car again after that is absurd. Not to mention this is during the summer time and this is my AC we're talking about. In total, between dropping off the car and picking it up, we had to go to their store TEN times and still ended up with a non-working AC and now they are refusing to refund us. Whatever you do, DO NOT trust these people with your car. P.S. Pep Boys used after market parts and are charging nearly the same price that the dealership uses for actual quality FACTORY parts so it's also a waste of your money. read more

Less than three years ago I got a new battery, with a 48 month guarantee. Battery was on its last legs and had to be jumped so I went to Pep Boys to see about a new battery. They said warranty was no good and I would have to pay or a battery test and new battery! (Yes, I had my receipt where the manager had even written in (at my request) 48 month full battery replacement. I went to AAA for a new battery to replace the one that was low (they tested it for free). Also, they replace managers more often than I buy new shoes .. what does that tell you about a place? Very nice people and they're trying but, they cancelled my appt for Christmas Eve and rescheduled for the day after Christmas, which I was ok with since it's Christmas and all. I was the first appt, first customer and only customer for I've over an hour on the day after Christmas. After an hour I checked the status and they said all they had to do was put oil in the car. Half hour later I checked again and same answer. I get they're short staffed but it ended up being two hours to do an oil change with an appt. I was able to schedule my appointment on their website very quickly and easily! And then I rescheduled it with no problem. When I got there John was super nice and professional. I made an appointment the day before for an appointment at 11am the next morning for a tire installation. Dropped my car off 20 minutes before the appointment time. The guy at the front said it would take 2 hours because there were 3 cars ahead of me for service. I said cool, I can walk to some stores and kill time. I call at 12:52pm to get an update on when my car would be ready, whoever answered the phone says oh we just started so it'll be about 1.5-2 hours. WTH? It takes 4 hours to get tires installed. Never again will I bring my vehicle here for anything. I should have gone to Firestone like I originally planned but because they were closer, I said I would go to them. So wrong! Wasted so much time. What's the point of making an appointment if the vehicle is not going to be worked on on time. 5 years ago, I bought a new vehicle and was offered a prepaid maintenance plan through Pep Boys. I thought it was a good deal at that time, just getting all the oil changes included alone...boy was I wrong. I had so many issues, I can't even remember them all. In short, there were multiple times I experienced issues after I got oil changes like my check engine light turning on, because they forgot something, not resetting the maintenance light, them not rotating my tires etc. I used several locations and having to literally argue with them to accept my prepaid maintenance coupons. The last time I went, they were out of oil... I also had multiple issues when I bought tires from them. 6 months after I bought them, I went to get an oil change and they recommended that I needed new tires. I told the guy that I just bought them from Pep Boys 6 months ago and he was like 'Oops, you are right. I looked at them wrong. They are still good'. They constantly recommend services that you don't need to make more money of you. I called them yesterday as I needed new tires again, even though my tires should have lasted 80k miles. The person who picked up the phone completely refused to look at my account and just proceeded asking me what size I needed etc. even though that have all that information in my account. When I insisted on him looking at my account, he still refused and told me that the 80k mile warranty was just a suggestion. I still had one prepaid full synthetic oil change left, but I decided to go somewhere else and just pay for it. I would not recommend anyone going to Pep Boys. read more

Better experience recently. They're so close to my house I keep going back and the head mechanic is fantastic! Anyway they just put in a new radiator and charged a fair price and they also include a lifetime warranty on the radiator including parts and labor so that's pretty sweet! Worst customer service ever!!!! Specifically the manager Anthony. My 80 year mother in law ran into a curb damaging both her front a rear tires and wheels. This happened right in front of the Pep boys location so she drove the car right into their parking lot. She gave me Anthony's contact info to help her get it done (she is Korean with horrible English). For the past week I have been texting Anthony asking for info, he wrote to me the price of the tires, but the not wheels. 2 days pass with no response to me asking about wheel info. I finally call them and the "New" manager on his first day tells me, "Anthony is out till tomorrow and I'll make sure he gets back to you". I finally get an answer back and he quotes me, $2,000 for 2 wheels and tires plus labor. The last call I had with Anthony was he was going to get used wheels for the 2011 Mercedes Benz c250 and get me a quote. He then writes to me these are brand new factory wheels. So I ask for a picture of the wheel & tire info, I will call and get used ones and bring them over. The response I get is, "this cell phone does not take pictures". So use your own phone and email them, figure something out. The car was in Gilbert, we live in Scottsdale....I had to drive an hour to go to pep boy to take a picture of a wheel and send to my buddy who owns a shop. When I got to pep boys it was completely empty inside, just one employee at the counter. I walked in and said, "hi, I'm looking for Anthony", he said, "I'm Anthony", I said, "hi I'm peter the one that is helping my 80yr mother with her car, why would you not figure out how to take a picture so I didn't have to drive all the way over here for this", he replied, "take your key and leave", I said, "I'm not leaving this is bull****, he said, "I'm calling the police". I just had to call AAA, get the car towed over to Wheel Specialists (ask for Darren), while waiting for the tow truck I had to be questioned by 2 police officers because Anthony doesn't understand how to take care of customers and their needs. If the roles were reversed I would do whatever it takes to help w customer. Pep boys was making $ on the tires, labor, etc....just not doing due diligence on sourcing the appropriate prices wheel for her car. Anthony you suck, you are a horrible manager, & you should be fired. I would not recommend this location as long as you are there. read more

Previously this was the garage we used for 2 vehicles and recently bought out by Pep Boys. I was not sure if we would still get the same quality of service due to the change over. But the experience was great. I went on line to set up appt for my convenience on a Sat. They are open on Sunday also. Not only did they fix the vehicle so that we could take a long trip, but had Lyft services for pick up and drop off to avoid waiting. I am writing this with heavy regret. I went in with a squeaky belt. After waiting 2 hours in the lobby, I was called to the work bay to be shown, I needed a new alternator, new fuel pump, new belt and a new pully. The service writer/manager looked me straight in the eyes and told me it was going to be $1,229.00. I told him, I am so sorry I couldn't afford that and he would have to put the old belt back on. After another hour, he told me I was all set to go. He did not give me an invoice with the needed repairs, did not charge me and just handed me my keys and said you are good to go. The next day I took it to another mechanic and was told my alternator and fuel pump are just fine, I needed a new belt and charged me $70.00 + labor. I am in shock at the dishonesty Pep Boys provided. I am unsure what this service manager stood to gain by deceiving me, he obviously works on commission. I brought my car here and ended up taking it back because they tried to charge me almost $500 for a repair that came back at under $200 at another pep boys. I'm not sure if they have a button on their register for a 300$ extra fee if you are a girl but this is so bizarre. This was my first time coming here and last,I went to get an oil change and my break pads done first thing they opened, I call at 2 asking if my car is done the shift leader or manger working there tells me that they got behind on my car and it will be ready at 5, and he says that I WILL GET MY CAR that day,I show up at 5 and they tell me it's not ready that the guy working on my car broke my router (when there was nothing wrong with mine) and that's why it wasn't ready but that it would be ready at 6 and that I was welcome to wait. Few mins pass by and the guy comes back to tell me that it's gonna take EVEN LONGER because the guy broke the bolt to my tire and he had to go run to the store the buy a new one. And he proceeds to tell me that I don't have to pay for it. WELL YEAH why would I pay for something I didn't break? So he tells me I can wait for pick up my car in the morning. Or that they can leave my car in the parking lot and that they could put my key somewhere?? Like excuse me what if my car gets stolen?? So We go pick up my car and the same guy tries to make me pay for all the things they broke and tries to charge me $300+ and we obviously told them why and he says "oops sorry that's a mistake" and we ask if we would get a discount for the inconvenience they caused by obviously not hiring someone who knows how to do those things since they broke 2 things within an hour of me waiting for my car. He gives me like a $20 dollar discount and my total was still 272. Which wasn't much of a discount in my opinion. They also did synthetic oil on a 2013 Corolla when I had specifically asked for the cheaper option when I made my appointment. But to sum this all up I will not be bringing my money to this place ever again. They made it super difficult and were very sleazy with their whole situation trying to charge me for things I didn't break and adding things I didn't ask for. read more

I'm pretty upset with my first and probbaly last experience with this place. I called ahead and made an appt for an oil change, gave them my make and model and all. They scheduled me for 4pm on a Saturday. I arrived at about 3:40, not expecting to get started early but wanted to if that was the case. At 4:44 I was told that the filter was on too tight and they couldn't get it off, blaming the place I previously got it changed at. They said they were going to keep trying. Ten minutes later or so I was called over and they said they didn't have the right tool for my Volkswagen to take it off, and the "real" mechanic had left for the day. First of all, if a real mechanic isn't working on my car, who is? And second of all, they knew my Volkswagen was coming since the morning when I scheduled the appointment, how and why would they schedule my car for a time when the "real"mechanic wasn't going to be there? They "graciously" let me leave for free. What the hell. They took over an hour of my time, lied to me about what the problem was, and took forever just putting my car back on the ground so I could finally leave. They did not offer a discount or anything to make up for this shitty service. Never going back. read more

I experienced a defect in my new tire (purchased elsewhere) while traveling in Arizona. I contacted every tire store in the area, and the Gilbert location was the only store with my sized tires in stock. I arrived 30 minutes before opening, and when Tyler arrived, he walked over to find out what was going on. He quickly opened the store early and started helping me. Tyler and his mechanics were professional, friendly, and attentive. Knowing I had to drive 850 miles that day, they made sure that my issue was fully resolved, as safety was my biggest concern. When my computer started acting up after the replacement, they were able to reset the computer, and test drove it multiple times to ensure everything was properly resolved. I can't say enough about Tyler and his staff - they went ABOVE and beyond from a customer service perspective, and thanks to them, I was able to safely get home to Colorado that evening. This store used to be owned by Advanced Auto. However, Pep Boys recently bought them out. I had some issues related to tires purchased by the previous company and Pep Boys worked out my issue on their dime. I came in and talked to the reps here on different occasions and everyone was extremely nice and honest. As a former auto parts store owner I was very impressed with how they handled the situation and took care of me. I highly recommend them to anyone and will be back to buy more tires when needed. read more

I needed a battery for my Cadillac and stopped in on a Friday morning. I was greeted by Kenneth the Manager who gave me great service. I highly recommend this Pep Boys location at Cooper and Baseline in Gilbert. Kenneth also gave me a great price on oil change with Penzoil Platinum synthetic motor oil; he advised 7,500 miles between oil changes and best protection for your engine. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else for any vehicle service or repair. They are a typical "add on" auto repair shop and will always find additional repairs they deem necessary for your vehicle. I had my vehicle towed there for a fuel pump replacement which was under warranty after being replaced by their shop only a month earlier. They called and said the vehicle would not start because the chip in the key was bad. There is no way the key just simultaneously failed on its own, and if it did it should have been covered with their faulty fuel pump. The explanation by the service manager was suspicious at best. The key worked just fine before the fuel pump which they installed a month earlier failed. They held my vehicle hostage until I paid the additional $250 repair. It's unbelievable that some companies choose to operate their business this way. read more
