Took my car in to change my tires and even brought in my own. Took them 4 hrs just to change my tire also had an appt and everything set up with them way ahead of time. Gave them benefit of the doubt and waited it out 3 hrs passed by no call so I called and they told me 30 mins, called again they said another 30 and waited another hr til I couldn't no more and called again they said it was finally done. They didn't even bother calling me at all. My car was basically at the shop the whole day. Also please reiterate next time to your customers that your shuttle services is not paid for but on the customer! If I have known that I would have planned ahead or notified friends or family for a ride. read more

My car was turning off randomly and I asked if I need a new battery or if it was the alternator. They said it was the battery. Waited for almost an hour for them to check to make sure because they forgot to put me on the list. Asked for them to check the alternator in case and they checked the battery instead of the alternator. Once I got home I got a call from them saying, that I need to get my car checked because I need a new alternator and said "good luck". When I went, they didn't seem very sure about why my car was acting this way. In the end, I went to the mechanic and they told me everything was fine and that pep boys doesn't know the specs of my car. Needed to schedule an oil change, and they were able to get me in same day at the time that actually worked best for me. Came 30min early because I had gotten off work early and they were able to take me sooner. Steve was very accommodating and very helpful. serpentine belt was making noise had pepboy check the cause of the noise , they could not find any problem, they claim it could have been dirt or sand recommended to replace it , it's been few month and the noise kept coming back turned out to be coolant leak from water pump, I called the store if they can compensate the labor cost if they replace the pump, they will not compensate since I did not have them do the cooling system analysis, proper diagnostic would have found the coolant leak was the cause of the belt noise, I'm still waiting for their response . read more

First, the quote for an oil change was about 20 dollars more than I'm used to. When I balked, they offered me non synthetic oil for less. I did a quick Google search to find out, my car must have synthetic oil! Needing the oil change done correctly, I asked for synthetic oil, as I dropped my car off at 9am. They said they would call when it was done. No call, so I called around 3pm and it wasn't ready but they would call me when it was done. By 6pm, they were closing so I went to pick up my car. It turns out, they couldn't do it, so they basically held my car hostage for the day with an empty promise to change my oil. They are un professional, incompetent and over priced. read more

They canceled my appointment an hour before I was supposed to come in but I asked to come in at a later time. When I came for my oil change, they told me that they couldn't do my oil change service unless I got synthetic oil when I've always only needed conventional oil. I was in Chico visiting family when a regulator in my driver door broke & my window was stuck in the down position. While I really greatly appreciate Pep Boys being able to fix my window on Saturday, they did not fix it correctly. When I picked my truck up, after having it for 8 hours, they showed me that they had fixed my window. However, after rolling up the window, it automatically rolls back up. When I asked the technician why it does that, he told me that's the way it's supposed to work. I told him that's not the way windows work he looked confused & then told me he wasn't sure. Since it was 8:00 on Saturday there was nothing we could do since I had to drive 10 hours the next day to get home. So now, in order for my window to stay in the up position, I have to stop the window from rolling up when it gets close to the top, which means that it doesn't close all the way. And, when my window is 1/2 way down & I push the up button, the window rolls down instead. read more

I made an appointment to get a smog check and it took 5 and a half hours! They only finished when I went in the back and asked a mechanic how much longer. Oil changes here take forever and it doesn't seem to matter if you have an appointment. I made an appointment online for 10:30 for oil change and tires rotated. At 11:30 I was told my car was done so I paid and went outside. My car wasn't being worked on and someone came out to tell me a mechanic was working on it, then left to get his vaccine so someone else was taking over... don't let people schedule appointments if employees need to leave. At 11:45 someone finally started changing my oil and I got my car at noon. What a joke and a waste of time. Will not be going back. read more

Update 4/16/20 I will say that Pep Boys took care of me about a month after my initial complaint and apologized for not getting back to me sooner. I will say that the service manager really stepped up to the plate and took care of me on this frustrating ordeal. brought my vehicle in cuz the check engine light was on and they call me a day later saying that my catalytic converter was the cause. i asked the person on the phone if they were 100% sure it was the catalytic converter and they even said yes so i had them put it in and i was ready to go. but a couple days later after i was charged over 1300 for the cat the check engine light came back on. what a total load of shit this place is. there must be no real mechanics here at all. all i was asking for them to do was a simple diagnosis. this place is a scam and the mechanics must not know what theyre doing at all. save your money and go to a company more trustworthy. (this was a few years back) and my brother recently got his car serviced here and his car got broken into in the parking lot. they even tried to make him sign a form saying that they (pepboys) isn't responsible for damages dealt to your car if your car is left in the parking lot over night after his car got broken into. my brother didnt sign the form and they did issue a refund. outrageous. service and quality is ass read more

The guy that worked on my car put the wrong oil in my car, I requested synthetic oil and they put conventional in it, my lug nuts were broken and replaced with ones that aren't the same size as all the others on my car, not to mention air was let out of all my tires 10 psi low. I usually do my own service on everything from cars to airplanes. I'm visiting friends, however, and while trying to push for another week before replacing my front brakes, I ran out of time and needed a new rotor on one side. My friends all suggested Pep Boys, where they had been taking their cars. The price quoted was close enough to the cost of a floor jack that I decided to let them do the job instead of messing with it. They got the tire off, then immediately started telling me that I needed a new brake caliper (for several hundred dollars), without even checking the old one. They told me that the one on the car was ruined because it was leaking fluid, which meant that it had "overheated". What is REALLY meant was that I had let the brakes and rotor get so worn that the piston had extended too far, and the inner seal (an o-ring) was no longer tight. When I told them to take a C clamp and press the piston back in and see what we had, they said that they can't do that because it's leaking! In other words, they couldn't do the STANDARD REPAIR PROCEDURE for an extended caliper piston. I told them that unless the piston was deformed, at most it needed a repair kit (which costs about $15 at NAPA). They said that they don't rebuild them, which is the OTHER standard repair procedure. I had them put the tires back on, went to Harbor Freight and bought a floor jack and a C-clamp. Guess what? NO PROBLEM pressing the piston back in, NO LEAK once it was back in. I bought a rotor from O-Reilly's and I'm back on the road. The bottom line is that they tried to boost the bill, got caught and not only lost MY business (two brake rotors and pads, about $230), but also the business of my friends in town. I wonder how much of the repairs they've had done to their cars was actually needed, and how much was bill padding! read more

This is the absolute worst service I have ever had. After having my car for five days, with zero communication regarding the update of my car, I finally have to call to let them know they can't figure out what's going on and to just come pick up my car. When I get to my car the driver side door is unlocked and my car is completely ransacked. Everything from the glove compartment and every compartment in my car had been dumped out onto the floorboards. Two gift cards were stolen along with some momentos that I had kept in my car. They are claiming zero responsibility and saying that they left the car locked and that somebody "must've gotten into it." I also left my car here with them with more than a half a tank of gas to come back and find it empty. Worst of all is the service and the complete lack of care that what had happened on their property. I will never be returning here and suggest that you don't either. read more

People are nice. My first experience was not so good a few months ago. I had an appointment for an oil change. It's took almost 2 hours for them to complete my oil change and they where closing, I had to come back for them to take off the "maintenance signal" and put a oil change reminder sticker on my windshield. I was very disappointed. I received a completely oil change for my next visit and also was quoted $50 for a partial transmission fluid flush. Price quote was given to me 3 days before my 2nd oil change and apparently was quoted wrong and a "partial" flush was unheard of by management. I hope everything goes well with the full transmission flush and my oil change. I have to pay the full amount for the transmission fluid flush. read more

I took my high mileage Scion Xd into PepBoys after it started running hot on a drive up from the Bay Area. It also through a check engine light so I asked them to check it out. They recommended switching out the spark plugs and we went for it. Within a couple of days the car started running rough. I took it back in and they thought it might be a ECU issues. Took the car over to Toyota and they told me that my Scion runs terribly on after market plugs and replaced them with Toyota plugs. They switch them out and the car runs great. So now I have to go back into PepBoys and try to argue that I want a refund because their plugs didn't work. Walked into service department explained the problem and the service manager Danny says no problem and hands me cash back for my service and the plugs! I've never had a auto repair place take ownership of an issue after the fact and just do the right thing. They have earned my loyalty going forward and can't say enough about how positively they treated me. read more

I came here to fix my spark plugs and ignition coils and they replaced them less than a month later my check engine light comes on for the same codes my ignition coils and spark plugs I take it back and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it and turned off my check engine light. The very next morning it comes back on so I bring it back and did there own diagnostics test and nothing came up. My car is still having the same problems, MY ADVICE if you have to come back twice don't even bother. Spent over $400 with them just to go down the drain. Don't recommend at all read more

The situation was ripe to be taken advantage of: out of town, a Saturday afternoon, the only nearby place that was open. Although not AAA-certified, the tow truck driver said that Pep Boys was a good option since they were open. I explained the symptoms (vapor-lock-like, although I have fuel injection), left my 29-year-old Bronco II, and walked 30 minutes in 108° heat to my destination. I was able to get a ride back to Roseville. They said they probably would not be able to work on it until Monday afternoon; I was fine with that I called on Tuesday evening for a status. They said they were still working on diagnosis, but it had fired up just fine on Monday morning, and since. They had been driving it around town on errands and the problem did not reoccur. The diagnostic expert was off for two days, and I knew this would be a weird problem anyway, so I was fine not hearing for a couple of days. I got a call Thursday evening. The damn thing was running fine, of course. I said that I would come up Saturday morning to pick it up and go ahead and putt around town on Friday. Saturday I went back to Chico. I spoke with one of the fellows I had spoken with earlier in the week, and he told me that it had been just fine on Friday. The consensus was that it was definitely heat-related, and letting it cool off was probably the cure. He mentioned that Fords of this era have a heat-related issue with the ignition module, and that it also could have been catalytic-converter related, or fuel-line related. And here's the kicker: they refused to take my money since they had not found anything overtly wrong. I was perfectly willing to pay the $90 diagnostic fee for their time, but they said that they had used my gas, if I wanted to think of payment. I was totally fine with that. Thanks, Pep Boys Chico. You treated this out-of-towner much better than I expected. I will remember this, and believe me if any of my friends has a breakdown in Chico, I will send them to you. read more

I have purchased several items from this store in the past and I have always had great customer service. But tonight's events prompted me to write this review. I'm relaxing on a friday evening after a stressful week when Mom calls. She and Dad were on their way to Lake Almanor when the truck died on the side of Hwy 70 @615 on a Friday night. As they wait for a tow truck I call a few places in Chico and determine Pep Boys is open til 8PM and reopens Saturday morning at 8AM. Parents decide to have it towed to Pep Boys. The service crew there stayed late and close to 9PM had Dad's truck running and my parents were able to hit the road for their relaxing weekend. Okay. They do the job, and they back up their mistakes. The site in Chico has a good manager, Danny, and I appreciated his steady and honest support. It may look like I'm down on them (by the three-star rating), but, actually, I'm giving them a bit of a thumb's-up here for their customer responsiveness. I had to take my car back here for THREE alternators in a row. The first time, the alternator was definitely out. They replaced it with their aftermarket alternator. The second time, my mechanic said the alternator was spiking and a problem, and they were willing to replace it without question, no cost. The THIRD time I went back with an article researched on the internet from my other mechanic about the alternator problem with this particular car, they were sweet and generous, and actually did the exchange with a manufacturer-built part without complaint OR extra cost. I appreciated that. But...buyer beware, and know what you're asking for. On the other hand, they'll apparently back up their work without complaint. So it balances out, and therefore....4 stars. read more

I was visiting my family in Chico, and on my way out, my radiator cracked. It was a Sunday, and the tow truck driver said that Pep Boys was the only place around that would be open. When we arrived, they were packed and extremely busy. They told me that they would call me when they knew more. So I called my sister, and went back to her house. Mid afternoon they called, told me the bad news and said that they might not get to it till the next day. I explained to them that Im not local, and that I had to be at work in San Francisco the next day. They called me three hours later, and told me that my car was ready to be picked up. The technician talked to the manager, and told him my situation. They were able to pull some strings and get me back on the road and home that same day. I was so impressed with their attentiveness to my personal situation, and that they went above and beyond to take care of me. And best of all, they didnt over charge. A lot of places could have charge me an arm and a leg because of the situation. But the cost was much lower than I was expecting, and they changed my oil for me. What Service!!!
