I am deeply disappointed in their staff. I was taking my car into them for years and loved how kind and upfront they were. Or so I thought. My last appointment with them before I moved out of Chico, they failed to inform me that my suspension is in really poor shape and in need of repair. I only received news of this when I went to a different repair shop in San Jose and the owner told me that it was extremely dangerous that I had been driving around like that. It was not okay for their staff to withhold such crucial information from me and now it is going to cost me thousands of dollars to repair. Mechanic that worked on my car was knowledgeable and went the extra mile looking at something I was having trouble diagnosing. Price was good. Communication was good. Location was good. Only ding I'd give them is I dropped my car off right at 8 and they weren't don't until right at 5. With an appointment I would have thought I'd have been before walk-ins. Best. experience. Ever. Simon and Sam were awesome! I called on Thursday morning just to see how long it would take to have my car assessed for a crankshaft pulley replacement job. Simon told me they could look at it the same day and I was shocked! That never happens. The communication on what was up with my car was excellent. I appreciated their text updates communication system as I can't always answer my phone while I'm at work. They had my car done the next day as promised and were under what I expected to pay. My 2017 Honda Accord just lost power on the freeway on my way back from Oroville. No fun. I asked the tow truck driver where do most people tow their trucks to? He said affordable automotive. I can see why. First off they drove the car and it didn't do anything so he called and said there was no problem and he wouldn't even charge me for a diagnostic test. After I talked a bit about my concerns he said "let me drive it again." This was Friday at 5pm. I got a call back at about 5:30 saying he drove it and it had the problem again. The next week it took him a couple days but he fixed it. They are highly knowledgeable, honest from what I gather, and have great customer service. Highly recommend. read more

A small locally owned business that does a good deal of advertising. If price is not a concern this may be just the auto repair shop for you. Once before we had work done and later found out the price was significantly above comparable shops including the auto dealers. Most recently we took our car in to get an estimate for a spark plug change for our 2008 sedan. Without looking up any information about the car the man at the service desk said "about $400-$500, and we will need the car for a day." We checked RepairPal.com and found the Chico price range was $200-300. Chico Car Care on E. 9th St. gave us a written estimate of $257 and did the work in less than two hours and offered a ride to work and pick up if needed. Since the fire I live part time in Chico and my car has lived there full time so the battery doesn't get the use it needs. It's been dead a few times but this time there was no resurrecting it. I had it towed to Affordable Automotive. The mechanic, Dustin, my fav mechanic, checked it out and found the alternator needed to be replaced. He checked the car out thoroughly but that was all it needed. A company with less integrity might get me to "fix" something that really didn't need to be fixed, especially on a car with 286K miles on it. This place is a joke. They misdiagnosed my car, the mechanic I took it to said it was a rookie mistake. They tried to charge $1700 for a fix I didn't need. The guy who I spoke to was such a jerk, the reason I didn't go w them is because he said he didn't want to work w me when I had the slightest question about his diagnosis. They are jerks, they are rude and they apparently don't know what their doing. They are also a rip off. "Affordable" automotive, I don't think so. read more

After driving for Uber for a year in Boulder, Colorado, I recently moved to Chico. To get started driving with Uber here, that company needed a new inspection of my car. I had a choice 1) of getting a BAR-certified garage in Chico to do it for a fee; or 2) drive to Sacramento to have Uber do it without charge. Uber informed me that any garage that does the inspection should charge "no more than $30." But "Affordable" Automotive wanted to charge me $50. When I told the person on the phone that Uber said it shouldn't be more than $30 I was told "$50 is what we charge." Yes, I took half a day to drive to Sacramento and back. Uber inspected my car, literally, in less than two minutes. So, at that rate ... "Affordable" Automotive wanted to charge me $1,500 an hour. read more

I took my car to Affordable Automotive for a smog check today and they completely screwed me out of $40! My check engine light had been on for a year already because of some superficial electronic problem and apparently this means that there is no way I could pass a smog inspection. Instead of having some COMMON COURTESY and informing me of this, they proceeded to do the smog check knowing that I had no chance of passing and then hand me a bill for $40. These guys are complete crooks! Additionally, the owner had the nerve to call me and badmouth me over the phone because I chose to voice my complaint on the internet. Got service done for my vehicle and it happen in a timely fashion. They know how to get a job done.

My wife took her 2007 Toyota Yaris to AA to get a new alternator. They charged her twice the amount that another reputable repair shop quoted us. We figured that maybe they were doing more work, or replacing some of the wiring. We just found out that they were charging her over $300 for a refurbished alternator. The other place quoted us $210 for a quality new one. They apologized for not having a cheaper one in stock. A A does good work, but will over charge you. I'M wondering if they would have charged me, a male who knows his way around an engine, the same amount. We will not be going back to AA. In these tough times they shouldn't be overcharging people. read more

They have done it again ! Voted best Auto shop 4 years in a row, Affordable has always been good to me! Recently, I needed to replace a motor mount and have my power steering checked. They installed the motor mount and fixed the problem. They also recommended that I get the two others looked at soon. I had tried to correct the power steering leak myself and was very unsuccessful. They checked and found that the hose was all the way detached. The charged me a VERY reasonable amount! I cannot say enough good things about these folks. My Prius had a funny ?electrical smell and the brakes seemed to grab a little. They checked my car and reassured me that all was OK. They are honest in their diagnoses and don't push repairs or replacements that you don't need. The Honda dealership insisted that our Pilot needed $3,000+ worth of repairs and belt replacements and extra do-dads, but the mechanics at Affordable Automotive performed a comprehensive inspection and confirmed that the car is in great shape and doesn't need anything. Been here for several problems. If you don't make an appointment before hand, don't expect to get good or prompt service. Their parking lot is always full, it's difficult to find room to park. Their troubleshooting is haphazard at best. I've had to come back for the same problem multiple times to get it fixed. It seems there's always one other problem. While their staff isn't outright rude, I do think their customer service could be better. Overall, an underwhelming experience. read more

This shop is first class when it comes to customer service! My first impression when walking in was the "Welcome" sign with my name on it! They had everyone's name written on the sign who they would be seeing that day. A small gesture, but it made me smile. Then I hung out with the guys at the shop for a couple hours in the lobby because I didn't need a ride anywhere, which they offered to do for me. While waiting in the lobby the guys were so friendly and I could tell they were happy in their jobs. My car was ready ahead of schedule and I was off to my meeting on time!
