Fantastic. Bought my son a 1971 Plymouth and several shops in town said they wouldn't work on it as it was "too old." What that tells me is some other shops are "too young" and won't work on anything unless it plugs into a computer. They are very knowledgable, honest, reliable and on time. The car is in good shape and didn't need a ton of work, but for the initial check up and tweak, they were fantastic. A few months later, we wanted another quick look - and they did it FOR FREE. I took my Kia Sorento in for an urgent oil change when everyone else in town was busy as can be (middle of Spring Break on St. Patrick's Day). I was greeted by a cute pupper at the door and a nice guy, John. I got the sense he was honest and was especially helpful when he looked under my hood to tell me how bad off my (almost a year without an oil change) SUV was doing. I was delighted when he said, "not too bad, about a quart low. We can fix ya up no problem." He was so kind and non-judgmental. He worked quickly and knew immediately what costs would be for a fix. We had an engine issue on the way from Southern California to oregon. Our transmission fluid was running too hot. So, definitely a stressful situation. We stopped in Chico and hoped to find a service station to take a look since we wondered if it was safe to get back on the freeway. Gary's mechanics (though they were extremely busy---apparently they have a loyal clientele) were kind enough to immediately check our fluids and do a quick visual check to make sure we could safely get back on the road. They are nice and all, but was not very with the outcome of one of our cars' last visit there on 7/21/2023. We took our Honda for a bad alternator. We got quoted $500 to changed an alternator. We said fine, go ahead and change it. The car was not going to be ready until Monday and sure it was. The only thing is that I had spoken with David and I asked him to change the belt that goes to the alternator since they were going to have it loosen. I clearly asked him to change. Once we got the car back on Monday, it did not have the new belt. Of course they didn't charge for a new belt, but the money was not the issue. I just wanted a new belt and I didn't care if the car needed a new one or not. Unfortunately, I'd rather go somewhere else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Due to Covid, and job changing and moving, I could no longer go to my favorite mechanic. I was planning to go to a funeral and my car didn't start the day before I had planned to leave. As a college student finding a good mechanic in a new area is always hard luckily Gary's automotive made it very easy. This is absolutely the best place in Chico. I took my car in and David was very nice. I don't know much about cars and was very worried about going to a new mechanic. I will now always be using Gary's automotive. I rely on customer reviews and I hope this helps: I went into pep boys for an oil change and they informed me that my righ axel was so damaged and needed to be changed ASAP. I commute to work 5 days a week so I was concerned. I asked a friend if they had a recommendation for a repair shop to get a second opinion and she recommended Gary's because of how honest they were. I brought it in and David looked at my car immediately and told me that I do not need to change anything. There's barely any damage to my axel and it's a long ways before it needs to be changed. Not from the area and was in need of a reliable auto repair shop, so I turned to Yelp and found Gary's Auto with great reviews. My old reliable Ford Focus broke down the other day and I had it towed to Gary's. All my interactions I had with the team at Gary's was via the phone. ( I live in SO Cal, car with daughter at CSUC). The team told me that they had already spent 1 hour of time trying to find the issue, but so far no luck. Everything was pointing to the computer but they wanted to eliminate all other possibilities first. I authorized the team 2 more hours of labor at their stated rate to find the issue. After exhausting all possibilities the team at Gary's informed me that it was a computer issue and it would need to go to the dealer for further diagnostics and repair. I fully trust that they did their best to find the issue and I thanked them for the effort and told them I would arranged a tow to the dealer. I ask what the total charge was and he said he was only going to charge the 1 hour of labor, because they could not complete the repair. He could have easily charged me 2- 3 hours of labor and I would not have thought anything of it. TOTAL honesty and fairness is what you will get from the team at Gary's. I hope I don't need auto repair again, but if I do, I'm taking my business to Gary's. Thank you guys for all you did, much appreciated. read more

Had a vehicle repaired there and paid over $300, when we discoverd the problem still continued we took it back where he offer to fix ti for another $300 !! We said no thank you and please at least reimburse us the $140 diagnostic fee. He asked us to leave the vehicle to recheck it , later he called us to admits faulty diagnosis and he could repair or return the $140 diagnostic fee. We accepted the offer to refund the fee but when we got there 10 minutes later he had changed his mind. No apologies no refund, walked away refused to explain why he changed his mind in those 10 minutes. read more

These guys sweated bullets over my car, and finally (after TWO alternator replacements at Pep Boys) were able to solve my problems. David is the main scheduler there, and he's been a totally awesome contact. They hated that my car was so hard to diagnose, and went way above and beyond their requirements, since they knew I was getting screwed. They actually did research and pulled up articles to prove to Pep Boys that the alternators were bad. And they've been exceedingly generous in helping me out with the small leftover details from my suffering -- they've put in new bulbs and fuses that were blown by the bad alternator and helped me track down other issues. Thank goodness they were able to catch this. Without their help, I would probably have lost the car. They are off the Esplanade, immediately north of the Sin Cortez Mexican restarauant. read more

Happy I tried these guys for a second opinion. They were totally accommodating with my last minute request. I was looking for a second opinion after feeling ripped off from Doctor of motors. The price we agreed on was waived when they couldn't find a problem. They even cleaned the the engine some so it'll be easier to spot and told me to call back, if I noticed a leak..
