Recently my daughter's car broke down and after having the car towed to Chico Auto Tech they diagnosed a bad transmission. Ben offered a rebuilt transmission for $7k or used Tranny w/six month warranty for $ 4100. after asking for discount Ben said best he could do is $200 off his mark up ($3900 total) , so I agreed. After a few days I called back and Ben explained he was unable to communicate with the TCM (used Tranny) which is the brain to the tranny and needed a new TCM. My first thought was since the TCM is enclosed inside the tranny it would be covered by the 6 month warranty. I was told know because the TCM was still good but can only be reprogrammed by dealer. After a 5 min search on Google this is common knowledge for GMC vehicles. So the $ went up another $3900. to $4710.30 because Ben had to open up the tranny to put in new TCM which cost $600. I spoke to Ryan on 5/22/2025 he stated, the car was finished again I questioned what was covered with the 6 month tranny warranty and the best I got was the gears. Both Ryan and Ben seemed like nice guys but if I had to do over I would have taken it to Tedious auto in Chico who quoted me $ 6000. for rebuilt tranny install which was 1K less than Chico Auto Tech. I asked Tedious for price on used and they stated they do not install used now I know why. I really didn't feel like I should have had to carry the cost of their learning mistake and still feel the warranty should cover everything inside the tranny. read more

My son had some work done there last year. Chico Auto Tech replaced the battery and alternator. That repair worked well. Now, I needed the receipt for the battery, 8 months later. Mark answered the phone, and was able to pull up the receipt to help me out. He offered to get the battery replace, but I am now out of state. Long time customer, seeking business elsewhere now. I've taken my vehicles here multiple times and had overall positive experiences. However, one mechanical problem related to the AC took 3 trips to diagnose and fix. After it was ultimately fixed, I called into the shop to have a checkup performed. The new receptionist, Ryan, answered the phone and the work was scheduled. However, his customer service/phone skills were significantly lacking, leading me to believe they didn't want my business anymore. I called back after getting scheduled elsewhere, and cancelled. Jump forward to the current situation. The hood has not been lifted since the AC was worked on, and the power steering fluid reservoir, which is secured by 3 bolts, was free floating without ANY bolts reattached. I called the shop, and spoke to Ryan. He asked I bring the vehicle in to look at it. Really?? It's 3 bolts. I'm on day 12 of 14 hr shifts working the fire. I don't have time for that. I will order the missing bolts myself, and save the headache of dealing with this new receptionist. My business has gone elsewhere. First off, this is my first YELP review ever, and I am writing it because I have been moved to. I have never been treated so kindly and honestly by an auto shop in my life. Mark and Ben are the two guys who make up Chico Auto Tech. Both of these guys serve as the example of, not only how to fix your car, but how to treat the people that drive them. They will treat you with respect. They will not overcharge you. They will work with you. They listen to you, and do their absolute best to diagnose and fix the problem with your car. If I ever have car trouble in Northern California again, without a doubt, I will bring it back here. I do not live in Chico, but my girlfriend and I were on our way out of Chico when our 1980 Vanagon began "bucking". I dropped the van off, and Ben was welcoming, attentive, engaged and understanding. Great shop! I was on my way back to SoCal and alternator blew out around 4:45. Called and they were able to have an appointment ready bright and early. The mechanic looked at my car, and even showed me a leak which he was able to fix on spot. So rare to be shown the problem! They also put the inspection fee towards the cost to fix the alternator. Let me start off by saying Ben and Mark are 2 of the nicest mechanics I've ever met, and my dad is a mechanic, so I've met a lot of them. Lol I brought my VW Golf here about a month ago to diagnose a coolant leakage issue, and found I had plenty more wrong with my car I didn't even know about. Ben was very thorough, and SHOWED me every problem my car had, while explaining what the problems meant. He didn't just expect me to take his word for it. He made sure I saw everything that needed fixed, and understood what the issues were causing. After diagnosing the issues, he gave me an estimate and I was pleasantly surprised at the cost. I was expecting to pay dearly, but the price was reasonable for specialized repairs. After he got started, he came across across a couple of other issues and called immediately to keep me updated and ask what I'd like him to do. He even changed my oil and replaced my poor, worn out wiper blades. About 2 weeks after picking my car up, through no fault of Ben's, my fuel pump went out and I was back in the shop. They took care of the problem quickly, and again, gave me the best service and fairest prices I've ever gotten. After my experience with Chico Auto Tech, I will NEVER take my car anywhere else. These guys have more than earned my trust and respect. I'm so happy I found them. It seems like a task to find an honest, kind mechanic these days that doesn't patronize you or try to rip you off.
