One of the reasons I continue to go back to Spencer's Automotive is because they have always been honest with me and integrity is important. They could have easily sold me on replacing my timing chain, gears and all the parts that it takes to rebuild that area but instead I was advised that it would be best to have the transmission checked out first before spending $2500 to $3000 with them. The car is only worth about $5000 so it wouldn't be worth spending all that money on it to then have the transmission break down on me and I would have to spend another 4-5K. Living in the Bay Area and needing to get a 2007 Toyota Prius running which had set unused in Chico, CA for 5 years, I needed a reliable, honest mechanic. I settled on Spencer Automotive after reading reviews of businesses that repaired Priuses. I cannot say enough about the help in getting this Prius running again. All communications were over the phone with John. The work done addressed all the needs of this car mechanically and electronically. John coordinated getting new tires and air pressure valves. He changed the oil, installed new batteries (large and small), new front brakes and checked all the hoses and belts. He got the car running and in shape to pass the smog test. All this done and keeping me informed over the phone. I got call backs almost every day as to the problems and progress. We had a date to drive the car down to Walnut Creek after a family gathering near Chico so, timing was important. The whole process took about 2 weeks after towing the car to their shop. The cleanliness of the shop, the courtesy of the personnel, their attention to detail and the whole experience over the phone was a dream. John was reassuring at every step that we would have the Prius running like new. Because of his care we have an old 2007 Prius reborn. It made the trip to Walnut Creek flawlessly. Spencer automotive was the only garage that was able to come through for me locally without any major performance issues or price gouging. I had a major repair that I was quoted $6,000 from the VW dealership, Spencer was able to do the same repair for $4,000. I was quoted lower prices by a couple other garages that turned out to be unreliable and/or sketchy. The job that was performed on my car was thorough enough that I can feel assured in the service provided while I pursue legal action against VW for not covering this cost under my warranty. Do I know how to do that maintenance? No. Do I want to learn? Also no. Have I been looked at and judged to be an inferior male at other shops because of this? Absolutely. The EXACT opposite is what happens at Spencers. I've never felt inferior, I've never felt judged, I've never felt as if I was taken for a ride, I've never been offered "Premium Air" for my tires. I've always been treated with the utmost respect and courtesy, and their professionalism is second to none. IF you already have a mechanic in Chico- that's cool. Still give them a chance. I have a rear-Wheel drive car that needed and oil change and a differential fluid change. Before I called SA I called 3 other shops in Chico; all of which left me feeling very insecure about the competence of who I may leave my car with--many sounded confused when I explained that I have a "rear differential" and that there is fluid/oil within it. But when I call SA not only did they make feel confident about their shop, but John went above and beyond. I have never felt so comfortable at a mechanic shop before. My car ended up needing a new wheel bearing and John actually pulled the old one out and explained what the issue was and gave me the old part. This is the only place I trust to work on my car! The front desk is very helpful at communicating what's wrong and why in helpful manner. Each time I've needed something replaced they patiently explained what process is occurring that requires a fix. My experience is always positive and I never feel overcharged. The front desk is always very friendly and accommodating when making appointments over the phone but sometimes they fill up fast so call at least a week in advance. The waiting room isn't bad either. It has cool red seats that are very comfortable, a flat tv, complimentary beverages, magazines, WiFi, and a vintage candy dispenser.
