We had a tip-top breakfast experience at Penny's this morning. We'd seen this place while exploring da parish and noticed that the parking lot is always buzzing during the AM. Now we know why. First off, the service was fast, friendly and attentive! We were greeted and treated like regulars which I appreciated. My partner ordered the crab cakes, topped in a cream-based shrimp sauce, cheese and eggs and served with toast or biscuit. He chose the biscuit, grilled. The crab cakes were fresh and flavorful, and the sauce was tasty (but not too rich)! I ordered the 'big breakfast' with pancakes, eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and toast. Second time dining here. Not impressed this trip. Ordered pork chops. They were very dark. Tasted of fish and old oil. Not sure but definitely not like my first trip through here. Overall, disappointed this trip. Staff were friendly as always. Salad was good as were the sweet potato fries. Tea was amazing as always. Just very disappointed in the chops, especially the aftertaste. Stopped by Friday afternoon between 2 and 3 pm. read more

Yes, banana pancakes are very good. I like mine cooked a certain way and they executed it everytime. There is a buffet for lunch that is well worth a try. Service is good just bring cash if your trying to be budget friendly and don''t order to go unless you can pay per box. read more

I have had breakfast here serval times on the way to the coast but Thursday was my first time to try the chicken buffet. Everything fresh , hot and delicious. Mustard greens , cabbage, red skin potatoes, corn nuggets and baked and fried chicken were all amazing. The price was extremely reasonable for the quality. The baked chicken was flavorful and the fried bird was extremely crispy , hot and juicy. I'm a little amazed so much good food for such a low price. read more

Seafood buffet is always spectacular, whether crawfish/crabs/shrimp or all - if it's in season, it's there. Ordering off the menu can sometimes be a challenge, you order one thing you may get something else, however the food is delicious. Service is always "Spot On" prompt & friendly. Two of the twenties were torn, when my order was ready, I attempted to pay with the money that I got from her ATM and was told that she couldn't accept them. Penny's Cafe is a community staple in Violet, LA and it has quite a lot of local characters that frequent the joint. They have quite a comprehensive menu along with doing occasional seafood boils. It is about the last actual restaurant you will see on your way to the fishing grounds of Shell Beach, Delacroix or Hopedale so it is a good place to stop off on the way going fishing or the on the way back home. They sometimes have a breakfast buffet and then a lunch buffet that seems pretty popular. The menu has a selection of New Orleans' Creole fare along with some Italian and plain old fashioned American diner food. The seafood gumbo has a decent amount of seafood in it with good flavor. The entrees are decent sized and typically quite filling and the po boys and other sandwiches are done well. The service is friendly and usually takes good care of you. The only big negative is they have a two refill policy for their soft drinks and iced tea which is rather unusual for the area and I can't think of any other restaurants that do that. I ordered the seafood platter and it was for two we had enough food on the platter that could feed at least four people it had fries your bread fried oysters fried shrimp fried catfish they had a stuffed crab stuffed shrimp and they had two soft shell crabs the only thing that I did not like was that it salty. Penny, the proprietor, is a big fan-- enough that when they were out of sweet tea when I came in for one late lunch, she mentally switched up my request for coffee with Coca-Cola! Ah, now that I have that off my chest, let's lay it out. This place is not fast. It's not amazingly good. It's not amazingly friendly. The prices aren't great. But it does offer a variety of local food-- jambalaya, gumbo, catfish, etc., or a little of everything with their rotating buffet. Penny's is pretty popular with the lunch crowd, and when I walk in covered in dust- and drywall-compound-covered work clothes, they don't bat an eye. Lunch will take you about an hour, so be prepared to relax a little. Perhaps put something on the jukebox. You're on southern time, and that's OK. read more

Huge disappointment! Ordered breakfast with scrambled eggs and was brought over easy eggs. No big deal right, told the waitress and she brought the plate back to the kitchen. Well, instead of making scramble eggs, they just chopped up the same eggs and sent them out. My husband and I ate breakfast here on Saturday. The 14th of February, Valentines day. It was our second time here. We had been on the previous Monday, for lunch. At that visit I got the buffet. (Monday, beans) I was jealous of my husbands club sandwich. But, I looked over the menu while we were there and wanted to try the breakfast menu is the basic southern fare with a few specialty's. At breakfast service was friendly no it's not fast you need to be at your leisure. But, it wasn't slow she was attentive and the food is made to order. Very hot and fresh. And, very good. Pancakes, eggs,grits sausage toast. Yea, coke is an overwhelming theme. But, they back it up. Both, times the Coke was SPOT on. I am an avid Coke drinker. If you are you know what I mean. I am not exactly sure what this dish was called but it was described to me as a Cajun Eggs Benedict. It had the poached eggs and ham sitting on top of two crab cakes. The "hollandaise" sauce poured over top was kind of cajun dirty with shrimp, crawfish, diced onions and seasoning. It was ridiculously good. read more

This place was not great. We stopped for dinner. The salad was iceburg lettuce out of a bag with a single slice of tomato on it. The mac and cheese was spaghetti with melted Velveeta. The fried shrimp were too salty, the Coke was flat, the boiled shrimp were way overcooked and nearly impossible to peel. The fried cheese was obviously microwaved and lukewarm. And the women's bathroom - wow - feces on the toilet, not in, ON. We won't be stopping here again. One plus, the waitress was very courteous and took good care of us. read more
