I hadn't had Hurst's in years, but decided to give them another try recently. I order the cabbage and fried chicken and, a couple weeks later, the liver and white beans. Once you hear the special of the day, then you'll be able to decide what you want before going. There are 3 to 5 different specials each day, but on top of that, there are other food options that you can choose from, such as seafood plates and poboys. You can also create a plate. Honestly I didn't eat the okra as it looked very un appealing. It was very slimy and the okra was hard. The fried pork chop didn't have a lot of flavor but it was ok, the cornbread was dry. Because I was disappointed with my food a coworker let me try her greens and they were good. read more

This is going to be a strange review, but this is how it went down. I fell asleep in the early afternoon and woke up to find myself starving and everyone else had already eaten. In desperation, I open YELP and start to browse. I really wasn't feeling like anything I usually eat. I wanted something I've never tried or at least a place I've never been to before. I was wanting something home food style if that makes sense. Something like my Mom would cook. I came across Hursts while I was scrolling. It was late in the evening. I'd looked at them before and they fit the bill for sure. I called 15 minutes before they were closing. The lady that answered the phone was really nice. She just sounds like a nice, caring person. She was out of the two choices I'd made from the daily specials. She said she had red beans and smothered ribs. I wanted Lima and bbq ribs, so I thought! Given the Covid world we live in now as well as the late hour , my order was to go. This lady took time ( even though they were just about to close) to seperate everything in the to go box with wax paper so it wasn't a giant mess. The red beans were awesome. I'm so glad she was out of bbq because the smothered ribs with gravy was the star of the show. She gave me extra rice , some for the beans and some for the gravy. It came with a salad with shredded lettuce. I like that. A big fat piece of fresh cornbread topped the plate she had to keep shut with a toothpick in the tab. I've only eaten the one plate but if they make beans and ribs this good, I don't see how they make anything bad. I'd really like to show you the food but like I said , I WAS HUNGRY!!! I stopped and got something to drink at a gas station on my way home and ate the entire plate in my truck. I will be back to eat some more of this food. and update. OMG! The lady at the airport rental car desk recommended this restaurant. She was spot on with this. When we first walked in, we weren't sure if we were in the correct place, but we were greeted immediately and told to take a seat anywhere. Our waitress pleasantly answered all our questions. She was very friendly and helpful. A side salad came with our meal and arrived first. How was this the simplest but best salad we're ever had?? How? The lettuce and tomato were so fresh and good. I still can't believe it was that amazing. And no we weren't starving or famishing when we got here. We ordered catfish and fried chicken dinners to share. Both were seasoned perfectly and cooked well. They rank up there with the best we've had. Even the toast is delicious. Yes. I said it. The toast is delicious. You have to give this restaurant a try. Today's adventure takes us to the outskirts of New Orleans civilization, way way down Airline Highway, just before you hit the airport. To the land of tire shops and used car dealerships and airport parking lots. If you blink you would miss it, a little soul food oasis with a small sign and a few words like SHRIMP ~ FISH ~ OYSTERS ~ DAILY SPECIALS painted on the windows. Hurst restaurant and Seafood has apparently been serving some of the best soul food in New Orleans since 1946. And if you have never heard of it, don't worry, you are not alone. I hadn't either. In an effort to branch out and find hidden gems, I've taken to cruising around strip malls and industrial areas where real people eat. Not tourists or foodies looking for the next Instagram pic (I know I'm guilty of this.) As trite as it sounds, hard working, real people equals real food. That's a universal truth. And I love REAL, homecooked food. A recent article in Garden and the Gun Magazine had profiled Hurst Seafood, and it was stuck in my subconscious. While cruising through Kenner looking for lunch today, the sign caught my eye and I immediately u-turned into the parking lot. I was greeted with so much warmth from the ladies behind the counter inside that I knew instantly that I was in for a special treat. They explained to me the daily specials, the poboy options, and the seafood platters. "Just give me todays special." I said. I put myself into their hands. "You gonna love it, Boo." She smiled back at me. The food landed on my table in less than ten minutes. A large, crispy, chicken fried pork chop. Sweet green peas. Rice and Gravy. That GOOD kinda gravy that they give you a nice hunk of steaming hot cornbread to sop it all up with. No joke. This meal instantaneously transported me back in time to my childhood. My mother was a great cook, and she did so every night. Simple, filling, meat and three meals for a growing boy. This meal at Hurst restaurant was a staple in my moms repertoire. And it quickly made me emotional and nostalgic as any good meal should. I should also note, that this wonderful meal costs only $7.50. Like Seven Dollars fifty cents. Before tax of course. It's safe to say I haven't had a meal this satisfying, for that price, in a very, VERY long time. This is a cash only kinda joint, so be warned, your credit card is useless here. I enjoyed the food here. Wonderful service. I found the employees here to very kind and treated their customers like family. I noticed that there were quite a few regulars coming in. Real down home feel. However the wait for a one plate to go order took more than 30 minutes. Almost 40 minutes. Yikes. Been coming here off and on for years and had never felt that I wasn't given a real home- cooked soul food dish. The dish I got this time was smothered pork neck bones and brown gravy with rice and string beans, side house salad accompanies. The smothered items feature a heavy roux brown gravy with plenty flavor using, for the most part, the less expensive cuts of meat with an unusual twist of home-cooked flavor. Lots of locals stopping by for lunch; is usually a good sign of GOOD food! I had a catfish Poboy. My husband had a shrimp Poboy and fries. ALL for under $20!! Check them out. It's literally 5 mins from the airport! The owner visited our table and thanked us for stopping by. It WILL be my go to Poboy spot! I got there right when they opened at 11. By the time I left, it was really filling up (Friday). I had the rib plate and a tea for under $10. The fried chicken looked really good too. I'm going to be coming back here. Very nice & friendly staff too. Down-home country and soul food. I heard one of the staff say the gumbo wouldn't be ready till 12:30 and she said that's the norm. I was in New Orleans and I really wanted some good fried catfish. We were staying at the Airport Hilton and Hurst's was only two miles away. I saw the good reviews so we decided try it out. Hurst's is a family owned business since 1939. The founders were the current owner's grandparents. When we drove up, I was a little skeptical. We would've driven past it if it weren't for our GPS leading us there. But my experience there was great. Right when we walked in, we were greeted by friendly staff. It was clean on the inside, and we took a seat. Our server was extremely friendly and recommended menu items to us. I got the Fish Plate. It came with two pieces of delicious fried catfish that were perfectly crisp, but fell apart when pierced with a fork. They were seasoned just enough to give flavor, but not too much that they overcame the taste of the fish. It might even be better then my Grandma's catfish, which is delicious. Plus fries, which were nothing out of the ordinary, but I mean, they're fries, they're good. Toast, or cornbread. The cornbread was a perfect texture and was just sweet enough but not too sweet. And a green salad, which was good. I also ordered the Macaroni and Cheese, which was very tasty. My parents got the Smothered Ribs, which were fall off the bone. The gravy was very flavorful and not too thick. They also had Red Beans and Rice for a side. The beans were extremely flavorful and the rice was perfectly cooked. Overall, my experience was excellent. Friendly staff, scrumptious food, and good prices for what you get. I wish I could come to New Orleans more often so I can eat there more often. Before I dropped my brother at the airport, I wanted him to sample a Southern down home meal, unfortunately this was not it. We arrived at 4:00 pm to find that the only thing on the menu was the daily specials. We had the smothered porkchops and greens (** stars) the porkchop was over cooked and laid on a bed of rice. the greens while cooked well lacked seasoning and flavor. Very one dimensional. Having been established in 1946, we thought that all the cars parked on the side of the place meant we were going to be in for a delightful treat. The food was okay here. It is definitely a hole in the wall, local spot that looks as if it's stuck in the late 80s with regard to decor. It was clean though and so were the bathrooms. Our server explained the menu to us as if we were locals and had been there before. We explained to her that we were from out of town, but she acted as if it was a chore to explain options to us. I ordered red beans and rice with smoked sausage and asked if the sausage is prepared in the red beans and rice and she said no they are prepared separately, but we put the sausage on top of the red beans and rice. I asked if the sausage could not be placed on top of the red beans and rice and she said no. Her reason was that's just how we make it. The server seemed annoyed that I even asked the question. She walked away from our table without even completing my order. I has sweet tea to drink and did not like the sweet tea; it tasted like a powder mixed sweet tea. This restaurant also only accepts cash, so be prepared to have cash to pay if you come here. There is a small parking lot in front of this restaurant and a few parking spaces on the side. As a proud native New Orleanian, we tend to be pretty picky when it comes to good home cooked/soul food. I've been coming here for years and they personally have yet to disappoint. My only gripe is the location as it is far way from the city. Fried Chicken and Red Beans are absolutely delicious.
