The best soul food I've ever had!! So worth coming to this place, such a golden find The hospitality here is a homie vibe, everyone is so nice and loving! I will definitely be finding my way back to this place (:

This place is a gem! We stopped for lunch after driving around the area seeing if we could find a pick up truck. We are k side the restaurant. The service was great the food was probably the hottest I have ever had. Right off the grill!i highly recommend if you want some great soul food!

Excellent food and service. Everyone so friendly and hospitable. Prices are great too. Don't hesitate to order anything on the menu. We had fried chicken and smothered steak, rice and red beans are best I've ever eaten (except for my own!), cornbread and potato salad. My colleague reluctantly ordered bread pudding, I had a taste, it was great! This place is spotlessly clean too.

Baked chicken, rice and gravy, peas and cornbread. Heaven

Would never have found this place if I hadn't gotten a local recommendation. It's a shabby building by the airport. That doesn't matter. This is a family owed soul food restaurant with a great menu, daily specials and great service. No frills. Cheap AF. Homecooked food. If you came here to eat soul food, this is a great place to start. CASH ONLY

Service suck! The lady that checked me out was HORRIBLE. She was very rude and had a nasty attitude. The rice was mushy rice and stuck together. But everything was ok. I will not be back as long as that lady is at the register.

OMG! The lady at the airport rental car desk recommended this restaurant. She was spot on with this. When we first walked in, we weren't sure if we were in the correct place, but we were greeted immediately and told to take a seat anywhere. Our waitress pleasantly answered all our questions. She was very friendly and helpful. A side salad came with our meal and arrived first. How was this the simplest but best salad we're ever had?? How? The lettuce and tomato were so fresh and good. I still can't believe it was that amazing. And no we weren't starving or famishing when we got here. We ordered catfish and fried chicken dinners to share. Both were seasoned perfectly and cooked well. They rank up there with the best we've had. Even the toast is delicious. Yes. I said it. The toast is delicious. You have to give this restaurant a try. They are a family business who knows the value of great service and great food.

Today's adventure takes us to the outskirts of New Orleans civilization, way way down Airline Highway, just before you hit the airport. To the land of tire shops and used car dealerships and airport parking lots. If you blink you would miss it, a little soul food oasis with a small sign and a few words like SHRIMP ~ FISH ~ OYSTERS ~ DAILY SPECIALS painted on the windows. Hurst restaurant and Seafood has apparently been serving some of the best soul food in New Orleans since 1946. And if you have never heard of it, don't worry, you are not alone. I hadn't either. In an effort to branch out and find hidden gems, I've taken to cruising around strip malls and industrial areas where real people eat. Not tourists or foodies looking for the next Instagram pic (I know I'm guilty of this.) As trite as it sounds, hard working, real people equals real food. That's a universal truth. And I love REAL, homecooked food. A recent article in Garden and the Gun Magazine had profiled Hurst Seafood, and it was stuck in my subconscious. While cruising through Kenner looking for lunch today, the sign caught my eye and I immediately u-turned into the parking lot. I was greeted with so much warmth from the ladies behind the counter inside that I knew instantly that I was in for a special treat. They explained to me the daily specials, the poboy options, and the seafood platters. "Just give me todays special." I said. I put myself into their hands. "You gonna love it, Boo." She smiled back at me. The food landed on my table in less than ten minutes. A large, crispy, chicken fried pork chop. Sweet green peas. Rice and Gravy. That GOOD kinda gravy that they give you a nice hunk of steaming hot cornbread to sop it all up with. No joke. This meal instantaneously transported me back in time to my childhood. My mother was a great cook, and she did so every night. Simple, filling, meat and three meals for a growing boy. This meal at Hurst restaurant was a staple in my moms repertoire. And it quickly made me emotional and nostalgic as any good meal should. I should also note, that this wonderful meal costs only $7.50. Like Seven Dollars fifty cents. Before tax of course. It's safe to say I haven't had a meal this satisfying, for that price, in a very, VERY long time. This is a cash only kinda joint, so be warned, your credit card is useless here. Their hours are 11am-8pm daily. Closed Sundays for church. And if you drop in here and see a guy gnawing every last piece of meat off a chicken fried pork chop and grinning ear to ear in the back? That's probably me....

Soul Food Off The Chain This place will never let you down on flavor or owning up the style of food they serve. Been coming here off and on for years and had never felt that I wasn't given a real home- cooked soul food dish. The dish I got this time was smothered pork neck bones and brown gravy with rice and string beans, side house salad accompanies. The smothered items feature a heavy roux brown gravy with plenty flavor using, for the most part, the less expensive cuts of meat with an unusual twist of home-cooked flavor. I ordered the smothered pork neck dish. The meat on the pork necks fell off the bone and the rice is cooked like I love it--sticky with plenty brown gravy. You have a choice of breads when ordering and I chose the corn bread. Don't pass up this little surprising place.

In the restaurant business, we all have a switch: once the doors open, it flips. Until then, you're seeing people exactly as they are. This team is genuine. Hands down. Yes, I know, I'm technically here for a king cake. Standing in line for a king cake from a famous fried chicken company almost feels satirical. But watching the entire team sit down together for a meal an hour before service told me everything I needed to know about the leadership and the values of this company. People matter here. You can see why the sandwiches are as good as they are. You can feel why the king cake is worth the wait. This team operates like a family; kind to one another, intentional, and connected. The food is made with care because the people are cared for. I'm not here to review the food (which is phenomenal) or the king cake. I'm here to review the brand. This is the kind of business we should be proud to support as a community. Keep it up.

This is an extremely casual place, that is both a seafood market and restaurant. I chose to lunch in. The service is friendly and familiar. I felt just as welcomed as the regulars. The menu is full of tempting selections, but knew a few things I wanted. I started off with a cup of seafood gumbo. After the first bite, I regretted not getting a bowl! Next time! It was rich and flavorful, and was clearly not rushed. Next, I also tried the chicken and andouille gumbo. Also excellent, but just slightly shy of the seafood version. The main portion of the meal was what I came for: the crawfish boil. I asked for spicy, and was informed there was only "just right," and they were correct. Initially, I was surprised that the dish came out warm, but not hot, but that, too, was just right. Oh, and the price! Usually, when you see "market price," you expect to lighten your wallet a bit, but in this case, that meant $5.99 for pound. It's crawfish season, I'm told, but still.... I'm used to paying a lot more. The decor is vintage jazz festival posters. Also, since this Women's History Month, the place is women-owned

This restaurant is located in a great location. In a large shopping center. So parking is not an issue. They have plenty of parking that surrounds them. They have bunch of handicapped parking spots in the front with ramp on the right side. They do have a few steps in front for easy access. As you walk in, you are greeted by the staff. They mention that someone will be with us shortly. We went on a Sunday before it got crowded. They said we lucked out. They usually get busy when local churches get out. We quickly paid for our table and advised us we welcome to sit anywhere we like. They said they offer many discounts available. Please ask before paying. We sat at a table near the front of the restaurant and easy access to the buffet. They mainly have large tables with hard wood seats and no padding. The waitress quickly took our drink order. Started out with an Arnold Palmer. Rare that they offer that. I don't know so far that another restaurant that offers this. And an ice water. She mentioned that they offer a small selection of beer? We declined. (Drink responsibly) The first plate was sample plate to get my lay of the land. Unfortunately my first plate was full. I noticed that they offer gumbo. So I had to come back for another plate. No offense, the cup was not enough. I was surprised that they served fried swai not catfish. The cornbread was delicious! Usually they are dry at most places. Maybe they been sitting out so long they dry out. This is not the case with them. The gumbo was seasoned just right. It is only chicken and sausage gumbo. Not seafood. Usually you can tell when it is freshly made. To me, it not only look good but taste great! Unfortunately they did not have ice box cake available. Few of the reviews mentioned to definitely grab a piece. However, they did have freshly made bread pudding and chocolate delight. Both were delicious! I could go on about the food. I digress. They offer free Wi-Fi but is password protected. If you are in the area and want some good food. This place does not disappoint. In my opinion.

I was arriving from Houston on a short trip and had been on the road for several hours and I decided to stop on my way in. It wasn't very crowded so parking was no problem. I was immediately seated and given a menu. I decided on fried catfish which cam with a small corn on the cob, some French bread and additionally coleslaw and potato salad. I had a Moscow mule type drink while I waited. My meal came out nice and hot and I immediately knew I couldn't eat all of this. The fish was crispy and the cold slaw was creamy . The service was excellent and my server even recommended a few dishes before I ordered but I had made up my mind before I sat down. Pros: the food was fantastic! Softshell crabs were a bit on the small side, but it's understandably the end of the season. We loved that the batter was good so you could really appreciate them without the batter being overpowering. Their oyster sampler and chargrilled oysters were fantastic. The "crawfish" (large boiled shrimp instead because it's off season) bloody Mary was fantastic. Food came out quickly and portions were awesome. Cons: service needed work (yes, I brought it up while I was there, and the manager seemed very, very confused). Our waitress was very sweet, and checked on us often, but messed up our order several times. She accidentally duplicated one order, but different wait staff (& the young manager? who even splashed soup on one of our diners) brought the food to the table. I mentioned the error the moment they placed the food down. Despite explaining the error, the manager seemed super confused, and asked a couple of times what was wrong, before going to ask the waitress in front of us and pointing at the order paper. She seemed stressed, so we told her we'd keep the incorrect order (seafood platter instead of softshell platter) to not inconvenience her, but mentioned that we'd at least like them to correct one of the sides we really wanted to try (we'd ordered side salad & hush puppies, they gave us potato salad & harbor potatoes). I asked the manager if he could swap the incorrect side for the correct side. He seemed out of it and very confused and asked if we wanted him to take the whole order away, I said no, we just wanted the hush puppies side we originally ordered. He walked away, then came back and asked if we wanted a side of hush puppies and we said yes? (Because we had ordered a meal with hush puppies as our side). He said he'd bring us a side of hush puppies. Waitress comes over and apologizes and says the confusion was that she wrote "hp" for harbor potatoes AND hush puppies (doesn't explain how she mixed up a softshell crab platter with a seafood platter and a salad with ranch for potato salad). When I got the check, she charged us for the incorrect order AND added a side of hush puppies. I didn't ask them to correct the entire incorrect meal, but I asked why they charged us extra for the side they got wrong. The waitress said it's because we kept the incorrect side (I had asked the manager to swap them out, he didn't). She says she'll ask him about it, and I hear them arguing loudly in the back. She comes out upset and says he won't remove it, so she guesses she'll just have to pay for them herself. Just disappointed in how management handled a common food industry error and how they treated the waitress. I'm not sure if anything else was going on that night, but I'm happy to chat with more senior management since I couldn't find an email on their website.

I guess I've spent too much time on the bayou down through the years, because anytime a bowl of gumbo shows up without a scoop of potato salad in it I'm disappointed. Worse still, this gumbo was flavorless, bland and completely lacking of spice. Were it not for the dark color, I would have not been able to tell the difference between this and the sort of store-bought gumbo that comes from a can.
