The bread tasted fresh, not like packaged sandwich bread, which I liked. The toast could've been a little more even, but overall it was a pretty good sandwich. I don't usually go for fried eggs like that, but it worked here. The hash browns were my favorite part. Super crispy, diner-style, a little oily but in a good way. Counter service setup. You order at the front, grab a number, and they bring the food out. Service was easy and quick, nothing over the top. My second time here and I love this place, besides it's not far from home. I had the three egg breakfast and it was perfect, over medium eggs done just right (something many restaurants don't get), awesome homemade toast, Hashbrowns were awesome, and bacon just the right amount of crisp. Drip coffee was good too, GroundWorks Coffee! If you are here for breakfast pastries, they have quite the display and the ones I have tried have been really great all made there. The kitchen has a great feel about it. Service was good as well with a nice calm area inside and picnic tables outside. The only fault I could find with this place is it is easy to miss if you are not sure where it is, they have a covered eating area outside that hides the storefront sign if you are driving by, so look for the concrete road blocks and pop up tent with picnic tables out front. read more

Here's what we had: CALI BENNY - $13.50 Two Poached Eggs, Halloumi Cheese, Swiss Chard, Hollandaise, Green Harissa over Sweet Potato Pancakes. I almost resorted to the breakfast burrito until this caught my eye--sweet potato pancakes!? It also has greens on it! Yes, let's give this healthy-ish dish a try! And boy it was good and I felt less guilty even though its smothered with lots of hollandaise. I liked the potato pancakes--it's almost like having eggs over hashbrowns. OOEY GOOEY PISTACHIO BUN - $6 The name sold me. But it was not ooey gooey. It's tasted just like a muffin, and I wouldn't have known it was pistachio if it weren't for the toppings. I have Ben there twice and both times had the Cali Benny. It's so good, I will probably have it next time I go! I am celiac and have to avoid gluten so this plate of goodness really hits the spot. Been wanting to try this place out for a while now. Finally decided to take the time to find parking - (had to go up the hill to find an opening). Good vibe - Loved the open kitchen and communal type tables. You order at the counter and give a number so they can deliver it to your table when ready. Shakshuka was good, especially the pancakes, and their house bread. My daughter ordered the BLT- which she loved, and she's very picky. Only downside was their parking - 8 out of 10 for me. This spot is in the heart of downtown Eagle Rock and I'd say it's earned its spot in such a prime location on Colorado. Opted for the croissant sandwich which comes with ham, cheese, and a nice marmalade. It was a decent sized sandwich and was filling, especially with the side of potatoes. There was about a 4-5 person line when I came, but there was plenty of space and the food came out pretty quickly. Their menu was fairly large for a such a quaint shop and I'm intrigued by some of their other plates and drinks. Looking forward to another opportunity to stop by. read more

Penny Oven is a delicious and adorable food spot. We ordered the avocado toast, shakshuka, iced chai, and iced matcha with vanilla. Everything was delicious. Avocado toast was solid, a bit messy to eat. Shakshuka was also very yummy and came with 4 slices of the same bread as avocado toast. The shakshuka reminded me more of a curry than other shakshukas I've had before, but really tasty regardless. The chai was very sweet, but I enjoyed it a lot. My friend said the match was solid too. We came here for a quick brunch bit before driving home to AZ. Easy to find parking on the side of the building. There are so many local businesses you can walk around and visit them all. Penny Oven is so cute, cozy, & clean. When you walk in they have full size menus, that you can review before working down the ordering line. Everything I could see looked fresh and in house. I ordered the Croissant Sandwich (Ham & gruyere omelet with blood orange harissa marmalade on house croissant), Za'atar potatoes, bacon, and Red Dragon Iced Tea (House made cherry syrup bing cherries, green tea). They have an abundant pastries, drinks and interesting breakfast menu items. I had a hot Latte and Croissant Sandwich which was thick, soft, flaky on top and tasty. A simple Sunday breakfast. Service staff were nice, competent and professional. Prices were fair for the area. Atmosphere was vibrant. They have indoor and outdoor seats. First, the food. I got the Dutch Baby and it was delicious! The lemon curd took it to another level. Their Arnold Palmer was on point as well. My friend got the breakfast burrito and he said it was good, however it was REALLY small for the price. Pretty disappointing. Second, the service. It was AWFUL. The girl at the register looked and acted miserable. The other girl who brought us our food barely smiled when she came by. They didn't give us utensils and when we asked they gave a bit of an attitude and asked "well, how many do you need?", knowing there were only two of us. It was just very bizarre and uncomfortable. At first I thought it was just us then after reading the reviews, it seems like attitudes are a common occurrence. A little disappointed that i tried to order the GF option of the pancakes that it wasn't available... the lady said that they can't make GF batter, yet they have it on the menu. I had the Cali Eggs Benedict, and I really liked the unique modifications to the classic eggs benedict such as the shredded potato bed, and especially the (well seasoned!) cooked greens at the very bottom. My boyfriend ordered the same and his eggs were perfect, but unfortunately my eggs were overdone and nearly solid so I took off a star. They have cool, unique products available for purchase below the counter, on shelves, where the line forms so you can browse as you wait & pay when you order your food if you find something to your liking. A few examples of these items are a root beer chemistry kit, a set of hand blown Mexican glasses, a large basket tote bag, etc. Food is good. I love the way the cook their over-easy eggs. They are not too greasy but just moist enough to be delicious. My sourdough toast was good, but for some reason, though I had ordered it dry, it came with a small bit of avocado smeared upon the edges. When I asked for replacement toast, it was brought, but they did not bring me sourdough like I had initially ordered. It was some kind of wheat or multigrain bread Again, they did fix this and ultimately brought satisfactory toast. I had a vanilla cappuccino with almond milk. It was nice. Absolutely delicious brunch spot!!! I got the omelette with feta, steak, tomatoes and spinach and it was amazing!!! The egg was perfectly cooked and the steak was tender. They also didn't skimp on the steak and feta, which I encounter at other brunch spots. As for the cinnamon roll it was definitely top three in my books for best cinnamon roll. It was fresh moist and the icing didn't overpower the roll with sweetness but instead was just right. I highly recommend this brunch restaurant when in the area. Tuna is one of the most delicious and healthy proteins, however, it needs to be complemented by some juicy flavors. The sandwich is too dry, the croissant bread is already naturally dry and flaky. The lettuce is also a vegetable which is crisp but lacks flavor. With the addition of the avocado, the total ensemble makes the sandwich too bland. Parking is a bit difficult, since you have to find street/residential parking. The service here is OK. The cashier was friendly, thankfully. However, the people that brought our food to our table just set our plates down at the edge of the table and left. We had to figure out where to grab napkins, water, and condiments on our own. The food was decent. Omelette was a bit salty for my liking, but I did like the seasoning. The french toast had a bit too much cardamon and cinnamon. But the topping of apples was nice. The cashew latte was too nutty. It might be because I am not used to trying cashew milk, but I wouldn't order again. However, this was my first time trying cashew milk. Something totally random, but the chairs here are so loud! When you pull them in and out of the tables, the chairs scraping against the floor remind of the noise your nails make when scraping them against a chalkboard. I was looking for a convenient place near the 134 freeway to meet my girls for breakfast and Penny Oven was the perfect spot. It's cozy with indoor and outdoor seating. You order at the counter, and someone will bring your food/drink to your table. The order number cards have recipes on the back, which I thought was cute. All the bread & pastries are baked in house. They all looked delicious. I'll have to come back to take some home. The breakfast menu is creative - featuring unique twist on standard fare. (Vegan & gluten free options are available.) They also serve specialty tea & coffee drinks with your choice of regular, oat, almond, or cashew milk. Jessica P noticed that they make their own syrups, so she got the Lavender Vanilla Latte. She loved it. I had a sip, and it was exceptionally good. I could taste the Lavender. It was mild and not overpowering. I ordered the Big Hibiscus Hot Tea and Graciela P had a Cappuccino. Our breakfast order consisted of the Galette of the Day, a Cali Benny, & a Baja Bowl. Since we are YE we pass our plates around so we can try each dish. The Galette was stuffed with cream cheese, gruyere cheese, garlic confit, caramelized onions, Swiss chard, mushrooms, & tomatoes with cheddar cheese baked on top of the crust. OMG it was amazing! The Cali Benny featured two poached eggs topped with hollandaise. Instead of an English muffin it was served on sweet potato pancakes. It also had grilled halloumi (a traditional Cypriot cheese made from goat's & sheep's milk), and Swiss chard. The sweet potato pancake was yummy! I could eat that on its own. The Baja Bowl consisted of scrambled organic eggs, grilled summer squash, black beans, cheddar cheese, salsa, chipotle cream, topped with fresh avocado. This dish was also good. The salsa & chipotle cream gave it a nice kick. We were all very happy with our selections. Each was made with fresh, quality ingredients. I would definitely come back.
