Unsurpassed views, breathtaking setting, and very good wines. I understand frustration other Yelpers have with their high tasting fees, but we found that across the board at most of the Pinot tasting stops we frequented in Willamette Valley, many, many wineries have a tasting fee they are not applying to a purchase. I agree, this business practice is questionable, if not completely ridiculous, but it seems to be pervasive in Willamette Valley, so its not completely fair to significantly downgrade Penner Ash for that alone. This is probably one of the more gorgeous tasting rooms in Yamhill, and the Syrahs and Pinots produced here are some of the best in Oregon. We recommend a visit. read more

I've been a club member here for years despite the change to CA ownership and the slightly over priced bottles they sell (even with club discount). Now apparently if they even have only have one reservation per hour they have no time for club members, when the club-only lounge that was a perk of joining EASILY seats 20 members at a time. Why be a member if I can't even access the amenities? They claimed it was to curate an experience for those that were there but other times my flight has been delivered all at once with no one to walk us through it at all. Sadly I have to designate this winery a total rip-off, and no longer worth it at all despite the nice mountain view (from the members lounge that members cannot access). I was told by the man in the tasting room he didn't have the "bandwidth" for more than one party at a time, maybe hire someone who can do the job? read more

Beautiful views. Highly recommend the Adirondack chairs looking out over the valley. Service was great. Why not five stars? Our Shea wine was lovely, but the rest were just average for the price point. Makes me wonder if they are pushing brand and focused on growing a commercialized product and have lost a small step on wine quality. I thought the scenery and ambiance of the winery was amazing. I loved the large tasting room in the back. The view was killer! One of the best in the willammette valley. The pinots were okay. Penner-Ash was one of two wineries I visited during my weekend stay in Portland. I have heard a lot of great things about the wineries in Portland, and so it was quite a treat to check a couple out. Penner-Ash didn't disappoint. Situated off of Ribbon Ridge Road, Penner-Ash couldn't pick a nicer facility - everything was quite new (less than three years since they moved there) and the space was beautifully developed with some great views of the wine county. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon, and to no surprise, the place was pretty crowded. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The folks were really helpful and informative when we had our wine tasting even though they were trying to multi-task and serve 2-3 other groups. The facility has a great patio for small groups to gather and share a bottle wine or two with some snacks. Definitely worthwhile to check out when you're visiting the area! read more

Just my two cents. Thanks to the staff for putting up with us and being the most friendly out of the four wineries we visited. They have a separate tasting area downstairs for group tours. We got the royal treatment. The 2009 Dussin is pretty delicious. I do feel that the tasting variety was lacking compared to the other wineries, but the hospitality more than made up for it. read more

A modern and beautiful space. The outdoor seating area is gorgeous. The tasting is a bit on the upscale and expensive side, but sharing amongst two people is worth it just for the view. I highly recommend coming here just to hang out because it is absolutely gorgeous. The wines themselves... I mean who am I to judge. Talk about a stunning setting to drink good wine and relax. This is the place. The grounds and the tasting room are gorgeous. They have plenty of outdoor seating and it is so peaceful and quiet, granted we were there on a Monday so not sure what the weekend is like. The tasting fee is a bit pricey, $25 per tasting. Given a bottle of Rose is $30 we chose that option. Hands down one of the best Rose I have tried. The staff were friendly. I highly recommend this winery if you are in the area. read more

I love this vineyard. I visit this vineyard every time I go to Portland and usually buy a few bottles. Was just there last weekend and bought 5 bottles. Every red I've tried here is really good. Prices are not cheap but I think it's well worth it. I opened one of the bottles and drank it outside. The view is incredible. They have a picnic area and you can bring food and enjoy the wine. We always bring cheese, meats and crackers. This vineyard has one of the nicest views. The wines are top notch. My favorite are the Shea and Pas De Nom. read more

Penner-Ash is on the eastern edge of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, just west of the tiny Ribbon Ridge AVA. There, Lyn Penner-Ash makes killer Pinot Noir from single vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley. The modern-rustic eco-friendly winery has a tasting room that overlooks the gravity-flow cellars, also with sweeping views across the valley. Lush landscapes and vineyards surround the winery. It's a warm, friendly, and elegant atmosphere. There are two tasting options. One that focuses on the basic blend of each of the varietals they produce. There you can taste Viognier, Pinot Gris, and Syrah- along with the Willamette Valley Pinot. The other option is a few bucks more and focuses on the single vineyard Pinot program. I opted for the latter, and enjoyed some very nice Pinot Noir. A nice elegant style overall. Those wines sold in the mid $50 range- pricey but not out of line for that level of quality in the area. Penner Ash buys grapes around the region and produces some decent but not great wine. As a rule, I enjoy visiting grower producers rather than grape buyers. So the wine gives us the three stars. I took my parents here while they were in town and used it as an excuse to show them the area- when really, I just wanted to wine taste and see a beautiful tasting room that we hadn't had the time to try yet. We had visited the tasting room during Christmas weekend. There were a few other small groups of people there, but not busy, which was perfect. The tasting room itself is like a big lobby at a lodge. Beautiful large windows looking out to the valley. Definitely quite the place to host an event if you want to have one! The staff that were working that day were very attentive, it seemed like they really knew their wines and genuinely enjoyed sharing the information about the area and what they were pouring us. I appreciated the big girl pours that they were giving us, especially since I knew we were about to pay $25 per tasting. Worth $25? Eh, $15-$20 would be more reasonable. But if you're only going to a couple of places in the area, maybe you don't mind the "splurge". I will keep this place in mind for when more people come to visit us. Sitting next to the fireplace in the winter was very nice and I imagine sitting outside on the patio, taking in the view in the summer, is really nice as well! read more

Great views and spacious for large groups. One of the rooms was closed due to a private event and there was plenty of seating available. Bring a little picnic basket of yummies to pair with the wine. This winery had wonderful views and a bbq grill where you can order small snacks to coat your stomach between the pours. You can either get a bottle and enjoy the views or do a tasting for $25. They wave the tasting fee if you purchase a bottle ($65 minimum). I like Penner-Ash wines so I wasn't disappointed. The snacks they had available are meatballs (2) for $8 or a sampler plate of meatballs and steak sliders served with a sweet cranberry or pesto sauce. There is a reason I did not get it 4 stars is some drawbacks including the lack of housekeeping and attentive staff. There were staff but no one cleared the tables which were piled high with wine glasses and empty paper plates. They weren't too busy because they were standing around the outside bar area. The other issue was the very limited parking. Lastly, there was no real indepth discussion of the wine. It was really just a place to taste wine and purchase their reserve wines. read more

Fun fact: during heavy rainfall, it's often quite difficult to get to Penner-Ash. I'd recommend four wheel drive. Rumor has it that sometimes they even take people from the road to the front door by boat. I'd like to ride the wine-boat... ANYHOW. I really enjoyed my time at Penner-Ash. The tasting room is quite impressive both inside and out. The staff are fantastic at guiding you through tastings of their (relatively) wide variety of vintages, and if you buy yourself a bottle of something you enjoy, there are plenty of places to sit outside and enjoy both your wine and the sweeping views of the valley. It's really a lovely and calming experience. Prices aren't cheap, but they're not as high as some of the other vineyards we visited. I'd be quite happy to return! read more

The ever-present dilemma when reviewing a tasting room: Am I reviewing the facility, the wines themselves, or the tasting-room experience? I guess all three. Some places make it easy, others make it hard. For Penner Ash, I'll just make it easy for you and separate them out. Facility: This is a totally gorgeous building and location. The structure is beautiful, with lots of warm wood and a great view overlooking the winery operations. Head out during crush and you'll have a lot to look at while you're there. Or simply hang on the patio and gaze out over the valley view. So pretty. Wines: The wines here are a little on the pricey side. While I did really enjoy the Shea (I like pretty much any Shea wine) everything else was merely okay. And so when you're paying up to around $50/bottle, well, that's a tad much. Tasting Room Experience: The folks here are nice enough. This seems like a fairly high-volume operation. We came on a local tour with 8 people, and there were at least 4 other tours there at the same time. It was kind of crowded. We got good service when our guide linked us in, but I could see that if I weren't on a tour it might be a harder to get in. However every staffer I encountered was friendly and on top of things, which is so important in a wine industry that's growing more "Napa" by the year. Kudos for that customer service. Penner-Ash should definitely be on a list for places to hit in the Valley. Short list? Medium list? You decide. The Shea is worth a visit by itself. read more

amazing, scenic winery. tour + tasting was $20/person. The tours start when they open at 11am and I think that's it for the day. We very coincidentally happened to be showing up right at 11 so decided to take the tour, but I think they encourage reservations for it. It was just us and another couple, who happened to live less than a mile from us halfway across the country. If you don't want the tour their tasting is $10 I believe. Overall the tour was decent. It covered everything you'd expect, and really nothing was toooo unexpected, and if you've been on a handful of winery tours before you've probably seen just about everything covered here. So was it revolutionary? No. Was it worth it? Yes, because we got our tour cost rebated w/ our purchase. Also, the tour includes a private tasting (which as far as what it covers is somewhere between their regular and premium tasting they offer) which may make it worth it for many. We were the first ones to show up at the winery at 11, so it was empty; after our tour 45 minutes or an hour later, the room was packed. Our tasting was in the giant fireplace room off to the side... Not having to elbow my way to the tasting bar turned out to be reason enough for taking the tour. They have a mail order wine club where they'll pick and send you a bottle or two. There's no cost to join the club and they give you a 10-15% discount on the wine, which offsets the cost of shipping. If you sign up for the club and take the first shipment day of, they take the cost of the tour off of the first shipment (which you can pick up right then and there, or they'll ship it right away). We opted to join, so the $40 in tour was comped... the wine shipment was their ultra high end 2007 Pas De Nom, for $90.. Pricey, but they limited it to 5 barrels. Their winery is state of the art, everything is gravity fed and they try to be as green as possible. The scenery is beautiful. They have a table or two outside overlooking the hills, and encourage you to byo picnic. Overall their wine is nice. I can say some of it wasn't my favorite, but I think their Dussin pinot is great. Though pretty pricey too (as are many Oregon pinots though). read more

Hit 4 fabulous wineries. Started with PENNER ASH located up on a hill overlooking the valley. They had the most impressive gardens which were a close second to their wine. Wonderful! Lunch outside at the DUNDEE BISTRO, very knowledgeable and friendly staff, excellent choice, we will definitely return! Next, walked right across the street to ARGYLE WINERY. Sweet Victorian house with beautiful gardens, very friendly and generous staff. Toured their facility, (always wondered how sparkling wines were bottled). Enjoyed their sparkling wines as well as their Pinot Noirs. Then off to ARCHERY SUMMIT WINERY, very impressive, sophisticated operation! I recommend going on their tour, (caves) thanks Dan for replenishing our glasses. Felt like Napa a bit with a touch of Lyon. We planned to go to Domaine Drouhin but they closed at 4pm and time was tight, drove right up to DEPONTE WINERY, which was recommended by our sommelier at Morton's the night before, glad we did. Again, amazing views, friendly people, lovely Pinots. On our next visit, I would like three days to explore. . .I have to say, Oregon has the friendliest people! We really appreciated the heartfelt welcome as we entered their wineries and enjoyed their wines, making our Willamette Valley winery experiences superior to the typical Napa experience! read more

What a beautiful spot! Perfect for the Oregon Pinot lover, or any Pinot lover. In the summer months as harvest approaches and sunny - do not miss an opportunity to get up here. The property has an amazing garden and comfortable chairs (with sweet wine glass stem cutouts) to enjoy your wine and view overlooking the valley. During the winter after the leaves fall there it's much less picturesque but cozy inside. Penner Ash wines are definitely in the luxury price points but are some of the best Oregon Pinots, in my opinion. Wine Spectator scores hover in the 90s. So regardless of the weather or time of year this is a must experience venue with terrific product for a Pinot lover. Give it a shot. Cheers! read more

At first, we missed the turn onto Penner-Ash. We turned around after a quarter mile, and turned onto the gravel road leading up the hill to their property. As we drove, we were in awe of the gorgeous view of the valley just below. Then, as we pulled into the parking lot, we saw a gorgeous view of the vineyards. It's really magnificent. We were greeted with smiles as we entered the beautiful tasting room. We walked out into the gorgeous grounds and picnic area which made us eager to start our tasting. There were two flights to try - $5 multi-wine flight (lame) or a $15 all pinot flight. We really enjoyed the pinots we tasted and would recommend it to anyone. The single-vineyard wines were what attracted to us to visit, but I have to admiit, the wines are a bit more expensive than I imagined, contrary to what I would expect of wines from this region. We were first-timers and we were armed with a wine magazine / guide and an Amex card. We were in good shape. We bought some wine that would be shipped in late October, weather-permitting, and we are really looking forward to receiving them. All in all, we had a great experience here and recommend this beautiful locale to anyone visiting. read more

Honestly, we weren't sure what all the fuss was about, except for the views and building, which were gorgeous. They also had a welcoming area to sit outside. BUT, since we are talking about wine let's be honest. It was our last stop in wine country, so we had alot to compare it to and we were so excited to visit from what we heard. Sadly, they should spend more time or money to hire knowledgeable and professional staff pouring their wines. They had 3 young girls working in their tasting room. They didn't seem to know much about their wine and were more curious about what other wineries we had been to, where we were going to dinner, and rushing us through our pours, despite it being slow. They also kept telling us how we should buy land in Willamette Valley, "because you know it's the next big thing." Umm ok, can we talk about your wines? The wines did not meet our expectations for Pinot compared to so many others in the area. We wish we had listened to a few others who tried to deter us from there. We believed so much of the hype that we insisted on going anyway. However, we did buy two bottles that we did feel were different and worthwhile - their rose (and I don't even like rose) and their viognier (which I found unique and delicious). If you're looking for Pinot's, do yourself a favor and visit Winderlea or Bella Vida instead. If you're looking for something a little different than the Rose or Viognier might be up your alley. read more

Penner Ash has been very consistent and one of the best I have had in the region. At the time that I went, the standard tasting charge went towards purchasing a bottle of their wine. A good plan for the rising prices in Oregon's wine country; Nothing says go away like a non-applicable tasting charge. The VIP tasting however was good, but not applicable to the purchase. Read the other glowing reviews for an idea of the wonderful view and decor of the place.. But remember you are there for the wine. read more
