Reid, the best host in Willamette Valley!
    Claire K.

We had the BEST time at Penner Ash!! The wine tasting was lovely, our host Reid was informative and entertaining, the estate itself was just stunning. This experience has become a forever memory with our friends, everything about Penner Ash was perfect for service, ambiance, company, information, and uniqueness. I'd put this one back on my list if I make the occasion for a return visit to Willamette Valley.

We had an extraordinary experience at Penner and Ash Wine cellars. What a gorgeous property. we were greeted at the front door by Reid. Let me tell you he was delightful so entertaining, he greeted us with a glass of Penner & Ash Chardonnay and a song ... We were smiling from ear to ear the entire few hours that we were there. It was beautiful. Reid shuttled us into the beautiful private tasting room overlooking the Vineyard where we had a delicious food pairing with our vertical wine tasting. Reid kept us so entertained. ( we were informed that Alaska Airlines would Let us check a box of wine for free at the airport) and guess what?... they did.! This property is so gorgeous. The flower gardens are beautiful. The tasting room is magnificent. The main winery room is gorgeous. We highly recommend you go and enjoy yourself my favorite the 2016 Pinot Noir.

Penner - Ash Wine cellar had me at HELLO! Who doesn't like being greeted by 2 handsome young men before noon, get handed a beautiful glass of chilled Rose Pinot Noir and the only female in a wine tasting group???? Picture a hot sunny day in the beautiful Willamette Valley with rolling green hills and colorful blooms...okay, is it in your mind yet?! Good because that was me on Sunday. Ha! The adorable Donny rushed out to take our group photo, followed by Reid, (a young Philip Seymour Hoffman), with a bottle of wine & glasses. I have to say it was the best greeting I have ever received in my life and I have been to many places, but that's for another post... Once we checked in and escorted to our tasting table I put my editor hat on and started asking all of the pertinent questions. Lynn Penner-Ash and her husband opened the winery in 1998, and Lynn was the 1st female wine maker in Oregon. Woo hoo!!! You go girl!!! FYI - The "master wine hat status" was recently been passed over to Kate Ayers. Reid has been working here since 2020 and Donny for about 10 months. The energy here is intoxicating almost as much as the wine:). We all felt so at home and I personally could retire in a cute little farm house on the grounds. We were allowed to enjoy the variety of wines and scenery without any pressure to rush. Even though it was almost 100 degrees out, I preferred the breath taking view while sitting on one of the Adirondack chairs and sipping their 2018 Bella Vida Vineyard Pinot Noir. Light, smooth and delicious. Our flight included: 2021 Rose of Pinot Noir, 2018 Bella Vida Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2018 Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2018 Zena Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir and 2018 Pas De Nom Pinot Noir. Each tasting flight was $80 per person which is waved when you purchase wine to take home. LOVED, LOVED THIS WINERY and the staff was just fabulous. Thank you!!!!

We took our daughter to visit OSU as a potential school for her to attend next fall. With the Willamette valley so close, my wife and I decided to try a few wine tastings while we were in the area. Penner-Ash was the first place we stopped and it pretty much ruined all other tasting for us. It was probably one of the best, if not the best tasting experiences I've ever had. We made reservations and arrived on time. It wasn't crowded at all on a Friday morning and there was only one other couple there in the tasting area with us. Keilah was our server and she pretty much spent the entire time with us talking wine. She only left us for when she went to grab the next wine we were tasting. It was one of the more personable tasting experiences we have enjoyed. Thanks so much Keilah for making this such a memorable experience! To top it off the wines were fantastic! I'm a huge Pinot fan but it's not my wife's favorite varietal. Even she came away with a new love for Pinot Noir after our tasting here. Not to mention we ended up shipping a case home to Arizona so we could enjoy these wines when we got home. This literally ruined the rest of our tastings that day as they were cold, boring and no where near as personable. If you are in the area then you have to visit here.

Signature tastings of 5 wines for $25 and incredible views, Penner-Ash should be on your vineyards list if you only have one day in Willamette Valley like I did. I originally discovered one of their Pinots on a wine menu at a restaurant several years before my visit of the vineyard, in New Jersey, I believe. I remember paying a lot for it, loving it, and therefore put the vineyard on my to-visit list. The staff was very friendly, but not the most attentive. In fairness, they were very busy and we chose to sit outside, where they had to come out to re-fill our tasting glasses with 5 different wines. At various points in between tastings, I became impatient and just went inside to move onto the next, despite not wanting to leave the beautiful views from my Adirondack chair. The staff more than compensated us by providing a few extra tastings and waiving both tasting fees with the purchase of a $65 bottle.

The vibe of this place is luxury and the people are awesome ... both the customers and people who work there, all were down to earth. Reed was the employee who poured for us and he is AWESOME. We sat outside with our dog to enjoy the views. Be prepared to get a line up Pinot noirs at your tasting, giving you the opportunity to taste different vintages side by side (which I really like). Plus the bathrooms are sooo nice.

Yes, the views are fabulous. Yes the fireplace is cozy in the winter and the patio lovely in summer, but beyond that I wasn't too impressed. For me, $25 for 5 tastings is steep. Yes these are expensive bottles of wine they are pouring, but when I go wine tasing I expect to have a bit more variety in price points. And while their pinots were tasty, I didn't think they were worth the prices. I've had pinots from wineries just down the road I enjoyed more for way less. Also, the fact that they do not do pours by the glass is another downside for me. They said they used to but stopped recently. No food is allowed indoors, but you can picnic outside. No food available for purchase here. Bottom line: You will pay a premium for the nice view.

The wine here was so amazing! I also really loved the Bubbly pregnant gal who told us all about the winery was friendly and knowledgeable. The views from the tasting room are spectacular! I don't like Chardonnay and this place blew me away! All together this was my favorite winery of the trip!

    Will S.

I have visited 50+ wineries in the valley and I can confidently say this is in my top 3. They check all the boxes for what should be the benchmark for all Willamette Valley Wineries. Up in the hills of Yamhill Carlton their view is one of the best with a stunning panoramic view of Mt.Hood and the valley below. Their tasting room associates are some of the most knowledgeable and accommodating to all groups and levels of wine tasting experience. They offer 15+ singles varietal pinot noirs from throughout the valley to showcase different terroir and vineyards as well as Riesling, Syrah, Rosé, and Chardonnay. Quality people, incredible wine, and great views this place is the whole package

Our first stop for wine tasting was this Oregon gem! The staff was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and answered all of our questions thoroughly. The wines and the property were absolutely amazing! We had just as much fun hanging out with the staff and as we did tasting the wines here. Our start here was just what we needed to spring board into our next wine tasting. #kickashview

The staff was polite, welcoming, and friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. The experience was like going into a nice home, next to a vineyard, for wine and cheese. Lovely atmosphere. Our group of eight had a Saturday afternoon reservation. We arrived and were seated before 12:30pm and left by around 1:45pm. This did not appear to be a big operation. During our visit, I saw only two lady employees tending to all the customers. Rain Dance has indoor and outdoor seating. We were seated inside. Regardless of where you sit, there are good views of the property's vineyard and garden. It's beautiful and serene. Shortly after our tasting began, a bachelorette party left. Therefore, we had the inside all to ourselves save for a couple seated by the window. The weather was pleasant so several doors to the house were left open, creating a calm, gentle breeze. We had the wines listed below. Individual bottle prices are from the time of our tasting and descriptions are from Rain Dance's website at the time of writing this review ( https://raindancevineyards.com/shop/ ). * 2022 Grand Oak Vineyard Riesling. $32 for 750-mL bottle. "Classic aromas and flavors of stone fruit and tropical flowers are lifted by vibrant acidity on the palate. This drier-style Riesling allows for so much versatility at the dinner table, but fish dishes are our favorites." * 2023 Grand Oak Gewurztraminer. $32 for 750-mL bottle. "A Rain Dance favorite! Gewurztraminer is a rare find in Oregon, especially in such a dry style. Its lively notes of jasmine, peach and spice box are perfect for Asian and Indian dishes loaded with their own exotic spices." * 2022 Estate Pinot Noir Cuvee. $45 for 750-mL bottle. "Fresh notes of cherries, pomegranate, plums, black pepper, pipe tobacco, and cinnamon." * 2021 Grand Oak Vineyard Pinot Noir. $60 for 750-mL bottle. "Bright and fresh with a complex assortment of dark cherries, raspberries, cranberries, intermingled with thyme, sage, and cinnamon." Since the time of our visit, I think the 2022 Grand Oak Vineyard Riesling and the 2021 Grand Oak Vineyard Pinot Noir have been replaced by 2023 and 2022 vintages, respectively. We also had at least two charcuterie boards ($35 each) that included crackers, roasted hazelnuts, onion jam, pork rillettes, raisins, and three kinds of cheese. The total cost for our group for everything was $336, which worked out to $42 per person. While I've been to a lot of wineries/vineyards and done a lot of wine tastings (just search my reviews), I'm still by no means a wine connoisseur. All I can say about Rain Dance is I thought all of the wines were enjoyable. All four, from the riesling to the pinot noirs, were delectable. They smelled and tasted well made and high quality. In short, I enjoyed our visit to Rain Dance and thought it was worth the visit. Rain Dance Vineyards is named after owners and founders Celia and Ken Austin's Rain Dance Ranch. The ranch was established in 1991 and the vineyard was established in 2009.

Husband and wife founders and owners Jim and Stephanie Houchins are nothing short of fantastic. The wines we tasted were excellent. After meeting Jim and Stephanie, I could really see the passion they had for wine and their vineyard. Oliver Springs is truly a labor of love for them. According to their website ( https://oliverspringsvineyard.com/ ), their first vintage year was 2016 and they "are currently producing approximately 300 cases a year, making [them] a micro-boutique winery." Our tasting consisted of the following wines: * 2021 Chardonnay * 2019 Estate Pinot Noir * 2021 Estate Pinot Noir * 2019 Kieta's Block Pinot Noir * 2019 Sasha's Block Pinot Noir The tasting, regularly $25 per person, included a sheet with tasting notes. Stephanie conducted the tasting and Jim assisted. Jim also took us on an educational and informative tour of the vineyard. Oliver Springs has multiple grape clones, which are cut and grafted from the same mother vines. I'm no wine expert/connoisseur, but I believe the general thought is clones produce more consistent, higher-quality wines. The Kieta and Sasha Block Pinot Noirs were named after two of Jim and Stephanie's huskies. A third husky, Mosey (Mozzie? I'm not sure how to spell it.), joined us for our tasting and vineyard tour, which added to the experience. :) Oliver Springs is a small operation. I believe the vineyard is only about 3.5 acres. I know it's not Stephanie's full-time job and I guess probably not for Jim either. They're open on weekends by appointment only. Our group of eight visited on a Saturday morning around 10:30am. We left shortly after 12:00pm. They have a relatively small, simple, clean, and modern building with a tasting room inside. Unlike many other wineries, this one provides an intimate, get-to-know-the-owners type wine-tasting experience. Several of us ended up ordering wine afterwards. The wine cost anywhere from $42 to $50 per bottle. As is customary, they have wine clubs you can join as well. See my pictures or contact them for more info.
