What a great find! This a boutique winery overflowing with charm and excellent wines. The owners gave a comprehensive tasting packed with fascinating information. They source grapes from their small place and other sites. We really liked the Titan, a Pinot noir named after a Mahler symphony (all their wines relate to music) and the Candide Pinot --both very balanced and with yummy textures and pleasing finishes. They also a very nice Rose, Seyval Blanc and Pinot Blanc. Skip the big commercial wineries and check this out. read more

Bells up was our first stop on our trip the the willamette valley, and I'm so glad we went! Visits are by appointment only, which results in a private sit down tasting with the winemaker himself. Oh my gosh, I had one of the best experiences at Bells Up Winery. I went with my mom, boyfriend, and his mom on Mother's Day. It is appointment only and there is only one appointment per time slot, so you're getting a private tasting no matter when you go. Dave -- who is the owner and wine maker -- is so personable and super knowledgeable and really made the tasting experience that much better. This is great if you want to learn more about wine or if you're just super nerdy about wine -- like us. We tasted five wines: a white, a rose, and 3 reds. All were tasty. And I was impressed by the rose, considering some of them can taste like water, but this one had a nice depth of flavor while also being lite and fun. But the stand out was their Titan Pinot Noir. So lovely! Great body, nose and color. Not a typical Pinot for the region, in my opinion. Also, they don't offer the standard "all we offer for reds is Pinot noir." They had a great Syrah! That was my mom's favorite and she bought a bottle. If you like a fantastic view with your wine tasting too, then look no further! Bells Up has that! Everything about this place is the best. Dave and Sarah, the proprietors love what they do and that makes a visit and tasting a best of breed experience. I just got my first 2021 shipment: a case of 2020 Prelude, Dave's hand crafted, magical tasting rosé. There is a lot of not very good rosés in the world. This is one of the other kind: it's great. I think it is as close to clairet as it's possible to get (not claret - that's a nearly archaic British term for Bordeaux blends) the almost red rosé they make in Bordeaux. It's so good it's scary. Dave makes an equally good pinot blanc. The pinot noirs are really good too. But I guess I am more impressed by a rosé or a white; they are the ones that frequently get lost in the shuffle. Bells Up puts them on top. read more

This is a "mom and pop" winery - literally the owners are living the dream. Formerly corporate workers, now vintners...and they know what they are doing. There is certainly a musical theme throughout the winery, and owner Dave spent an hour with us telling us about how he built up and his future plans. I was very pleased to join the club. This was the most interesting tasting we have ever had. My wife and I sat across the table with Dave, the owner of the winery and wine maker; Just the three of us. Dave spent 2 hours explaining how each wine we tasted was made, from the ground up. He told us how he bought the land over 10 years ago and had to remove the existing neglected plants that were not doing well such as blackberries. Then he planted the root stocks specially selected for the soil. Then he told us how he chose the grape vines to be grafted. One such grape was very unique to Willamette valley and also California. Dave said he chose to graph it because of it was unique, and also because it does well in the climate and soils Willamette Valley. It was the Helios 2021 Seyval Blanc. The taste was creamy with a mineral of lemon grass and notes of lemon, pineapple, and ginger finish. I think it would pair well with seafood. We plan to try it with sushi because of the slight ginger notes. Then we tasted the Prelude 2022 Rose, which was also excellent, with notes of strawberry, cherry and boysenberry. He made it from 2 of his Pinot Noir clones he planted in 2013. Then we tasted the Titan 2020 Pinot Noir. It had notes of cranberry, cherry, toasted marshmallow and some smoke. Then we tasted the Candide 2020 pinot noir reserve. The notes were similar to the Titan but with more concentration. Dave also sources grapes from other vineyards. One such grape was a Syrah from Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley, Washington State that he let us taste. It was very good and different than any Syrah I had before. It was the Firebird 2020 Syrah. Not only did Dave tell us how he makes each wine we tasted, he also answered every question we had, including about his personal life. Before he purchased his winery, Dave had a very successful professional career that he gave up to follow his dream of owning a winery and making wine. Dave is very interesting to talk to, very intelligent and seems capable of doing pretty much anything. We are fortunate that he decided to choose winemaking as a career so we can all enjoy his excellent wines. We purchased all 5 of the different wines that we tasted because they were not only good but unique compared to other wines we tasted at other wineries. If you are in the Willamette Valley, we highly recommend scheduling a wine taste at Bells Up winery. read more

My family and I recently returned from a trip to Oregon. I made an appointment for us to visit Bells Up Winery, in the Willamette Valley. I spoke with Sara to set up the appointment. She could not have been more enthusiastic or helpful. Meeting Dave was an absolute dream. He was gracious and helpful, and patient with us wine novices. The tasting was held on a veranda overlooking the grape fields and the explanations of the wines were almost as good as the wines themselves. My mother, who is a bit of a tough critic, told me after that Bells Up was her favorite thing we did on our vacation. Small side note. Bells Up has blankets for people in case get a little chilly during the outdoor tasting, and Dave got one for my mother. She now considers that the standard for any winery. "They can't be as good as Bells Up, they didn't give me a blanket!" was actually said by her later that same day. Dave is knowledgeable and passionate about his craft and you can truly taste it in the product they produce. We were all extremely happy with our visit, and if we find ourselves in Oregon again, we will definitely make Bells Up a priority on our trip. On the last morning before returning home, we did not have any wine tastings planned. That's when I got a text from a friend. "Have you been to Bells Up?" No, but I knew to trust his knowledge of pinot noirs. I called and luckily we got in. After the previous seven days of great wines, it would take a lot to be impressed. We were. The whites grabbed our attention as easily accessible. Great summer wines served by David, the co-owner and winemaker, as he told the story behind Bells Up. Three pinots followed that captivated us while we gazed down on the vineyards and on to Newberg. David's enthusiasm did not overwhelm. It was as if this former musician was combining the view, the wine, and their story in to one score. It resonated with us. Maybe some people looking for bigger spaces and louder crowds won't find this their symphony, but it certainly was ours that morning. read more

We are definitely Pinot Noir snobs and this winery is one of the best we visited during our recent Willamette Valley whirlwind tour. Oh my gosh I loved this place, the wine, and the owner. Let's start with the place- the tasting room is also where the wine barrels are. The room has long live edged tables where you sit for the tastings. The view out over the young vineyard is gorgeous. Next, the wine. If you are an "earthy" Pinot fan, then Bells Up's portfolio might not be you jam. Their pinots are light, easily drinkable, and elegant without being snobby. We had a salmon dinner with some friends last night and went through two bottles of Titan without even trying. The Rose is still in the barrel, and a little young for my taste. All the notes are there though so just a little more time and I'm sure it'll be super tasty too! The Syrah was nice too but qty is limited so I don't want to get hopes up to then have it dashed if you're reading this when it's no longer available. Lastly the owner (Dave) is such a nice, gregarious guy. His excitement for the wine and being in Oregon wine country just shines through. He and his wife want to keep things small-ish so that one on one attention can be given to everyone who comes through the door. If you're looking for a thirty minute belly up to the bar be ignored most of the time or be talked down to tasting experience, Bells Up is not for you.
