You don't have to go far from Portland to find a great Pinot Noir: there are tons of tiny wineries to be explored and every one of them offers a good Pinot Noir -- Bells up is no exception. Each Pinot and winery that you find will have its own personality and story -- and this small, young winery has plenty of both. Bells Up also offers a white Rhapsody wine that's likely to stand out among wines in the region. If you like their offerings, they have a very flexible wine club. It's hard to decide where to visit when planning a day of wine tours in the region. Hands down, this is the stop you don't want to miss. We had 4 tours on our day in Newberg. This was the absolute best. Dave is incredibly likeable. You feel like you have met an old friend the second he greets you. He is funny and cares passionately about what he is creating. You will learn a lot about the wines, the farm and the area. No comparison at any of the other stops we made. Give yourself adequate time. I sadly had to cut our tour short because I didn't realize he would spend more than an hour with us. We had to run out to make the next tour. Sorry we had to cut this short. One of the true highlights of our Pacific NW trip. We loved all the wines so much we had trouble narrowing it down to one case. read more

We visited Bells Up Winery about a month ago during a 10-day family vacation to the Pacific Northwest. This was an absolute highlight of our trip! Getting to interact with winemaker Dave was incredibly special and a very personal experience. Sara is a lovely hostess as well - together they do a fantastic job sharing the story of Bells Up with visitors. From the gorgeous setting on a hill overlooking quaint Newberg to the inspiration that made them take a big leap and leave their Midwest home to the delicious and flavorful wines...this is a must-visit winery! The tasting was so educational and winemaker Dave answered all our questions. You really get a very personal feel for the work that goes into making wine and what makes each one different. First, the wine maker, Dave, greets you at the door and walks you around the cellar and then out to their patio deck to explain the vineyard his family is farming. He then sits you down and talks you through each of the wines on flight. Great wines, great views and great people. My daughter and I visited Bells Up on a spectacular summer day. It was my first time there and her second. Making a reservation was as simple as an email. Owner/winemaker Dave Specter replied quickly and we see the date and time. When we arrived a few days later he was there to greet us and we spent the next 90 minutes enjoying (then purchasing) his wine, learning about his wine making, and taking in the magnificent views. We ended up purchasing a Pinot Blanc, two different Pinot Noira, and Syrah. Whether one is a serious seasoned wine afficanado or new ro rje world of wine, Bells Up is a must go to winery! read more

Absolutely one of the best things we did on our trip to the Willamette Valley was to go to Bells Up Winery. Dave and Sara were amazing hosts. The wines were fantastic and tasting them with Dave (who makes the wines) was outstanding. This is a gem of a winery and I am glad a friend recommended. We joined the Fanfare club and it's a good thing since we are almost out of the wine we bought when we were there. BTW, the Prelude is a perfect Thanksgiving Dinner wine. Love this winery because the wines are great and the owners have heart. The best part, after the wines is Dave played French Horn and so did I. French Horns Rule and so does Bells Up. It may be a small winery but it is huge on hospitality, knowledge, and good wine. Owner, operator, host and wine maker really learned the business from the ground up, has figured out what he wants to make, how to do it, and is very realistic about time, money and effort. Dave & Sara could not have been nicer or more generous with their time and information. They have a charming story of why they are in this business & the tasting room is just as cute! A fantastic view of the valley, perfect Riedel glasses, snacks, it was all done with a customer focus and care. We made an appointment for 2 for wine tasting and boy were we in for a treat. The wine maker and owner Dave greeted us when we arrived and led the tasting. We tasted from their tasting menu including the recently barreled rose. What a treat! We had a great conversation paired with some excellent Pinot Noirs. This is a boutique winery with wines you will not find in your local grocery store. Very special and fun all at the same time. Highly recommend. We did end up tasting at other larger wineries in the area, but this was the most personable wine tasting experience. read more

I visited Bells Up while I was in town for business. Prior to this visit I had never visited any wineries in Oregon and came here on a recommendation from a friend. My drive from Portland was quick and easy and the scenery on the way was unbelievable! After about 20 minutes, I was out of the city and into the countryside and wine country! If you live or are staying in Portland, it is a very easy drive to Newburg. Situated up on a hill the view from the winery is phenomenal! Dave and Sara are the gracious hosts and owners. As soon as I arrived, I felt so welcomed and Dave provided me with a tour and history of both the operation as well as their background. The wines I tried were excellent!! This is the ultimate boutique winery...family owned and I was able to make an appointment so there was no need to wait since I was only in town for a short while. The back deck is the perfect place to savor some wine and view the countryside below. Since I was headed back home to Chicago the following day, they were able to quickly package several bottles for me for quick transport back home. The next time you are in the Portland/Newburg area, be sure to make time to stop and do a tasting at Bells Up! read more
