Great Mom and Pop hardware store. Yoeng has trouble finding good help to employ--the associates are too talkative, makes it hard to think. But once I get the help to stop trying to help, it's my ideal place. Yoeng knows his stuff, and he's willing to dig around in his basement for what I need. Yes, prices are a little higher than the big stores, but it's closer to home, much faster, and help is there when you need it. Plus it's near Gino's Pizza Cafe. read more

This place is horrible. I bought a part for a washer and wasn't sure it would fit so the guy told me if it didn't fit just bring it back., of course it wasn't what I needed. I brought it back the next day and they wouldn't refund my money. The lady at the register may have been the rudest person ever. She argued with me and even know the guy was right there and told her he said I could bring it back, she would not refund my money. I finally got store credit so I had to walk around the store looking for items I may have needed. I couldn't find anything so I just got random items that I didnt really need. Did I mention the lady at the register was NASTY. Never go here. I will never step foot in this store again. read more

The service here is Amazing. I needed replacement bolts for an ancient Boiler circulator Pump and also a radiator key so I figured I'd give this place a try ... not really thinking I'd find what I needed. (I'm used to multiple trips to multiple stores) I was greeted by an employee as soon as I walked in and he basically got me in and out of here in less than 5minutes with everything that I needed. I was also given some tips and advice on how to properly install them into the Boiler. Amazing. Astonishing really. Service like that ? this day in age ? This place is an absolute joke. The older white male employee was disgusting towards my girlfriend, making inappropriate remarks and harassing her, and all she wanted was to have a key copied. After seeing him, she noticed this is the same guy who had cat called her the other day, and cursed her out when she ignored him on the street. She went to file a complaint with the manager, which he said he was part owner, and kicked her out of the store. How this place is still running with scum like this is beyond me. Not to mention the prices they charge are absolutely insane. It does not matter how convenient this place is, being around the corner. I felt the same way as Kev and the last yelper when I walked in there today. I was surprised to see the rude Asian female behind the counter. The outside appearance gave you the impression that older white people owned it. But a nice white gentleman made sure to approach me, greeting me and made sure I walked away happy with my purchase and a little small talk. I recently tried to return an unused electric mousetrap unaware that this is an item that cannot be returned. When I walked in a young man teased me when I said I wanted to return the item - saying "did the mouse walk out?" The cashier questioningly said to 2 employees standing at the front of the store "This item can't be returned, can it?" Another employee said "Nah - you were told when you bought it it couldn't be returned." When I said I had not been told, he said "Yes, you were." I was not told this information at the time of the sale. Now that I think about it, it makes sense that this is an item that can't be returned but that was not explained to me at the time of purchase and I certainly expect to be treated courteously no matter what the situation. read more

I went in to buy a toilet seat. The guy helps me. I told him I need a round one, big. The one I got was the same size as the one I have already. So I go back to exchange. The guy says, I don't accept toilet seats back. I'm like, so throw it away then, I don't want it. Do I go to buy another one with the guy right behind me saying if you have a round toilet then only one will fit. What if I want to put one on the that is bigger or oblong? Should be my decision. I would go to this place over Home Depot or Lowes any day of the week. I'm always greeted as soon as I walk in and the employees always know where everything is located in the store. They even offer advice when I need it. The store seems really small from the outside, but I've honestly never left here empty-handed and they always have everything I need. Sure, maybe they're not American-owned, but so what? That's part of the American dream, so I think people should lay off them. First of all--I have had positive experiences in the past--but not today. I went there today to exchange a thermostat. My wife had been sold the wrong thermostat and I had returned to exchange it. I explained that I knew I was paying more for it than at Home Depot--but was there to hopefully pay a little extra for good service. The white man took me to the front register and gave it to the Korean woman who was wearing glasses and talking in Korean on her cell phone while trying to converse with me in broken English. I asked her if she could quit talking on the cell phone so we could discuss the transaction. She ignored me and kept talking on the cell phone. I called out to the white gentleman to please explain the situation. I also stated that it was rude to be on a cell phone while transacting business. He was very apologetic but was careful what he said. He handled himself well. read more

I have to say this store, has been one of the few stores on Frankford Avenue that still exists after a lot of other stores went out of buisness years' ago. But this place has not. I'm middle-aged & my dad, back in the day, we used to go together. (i'm talking when i had to hold my dad's hand when crossing frankford avenue) When Home Depot or Lowes doesn't even carry those certain parts that are just too hard to find, Penn Hardware "ALMOST ALWAYS" has it in stock. I still go there to have certain knives sharpened & I always go there to have keys made. I'm sure by now that the original owners after all these years' have long since retired & sold the buisness. I cannot blame them. I would do the same thing. I'm just a little bumed-out (well,a lot to be honest with ya) that when you put something up for sale in the open market, anyone from anywhere can buy it~That's the AMERICAN" way, right? Well, it wasn't sold to a fellow American. I think some Asian or Koeren husband & wife bought it. If anyone has the money (& they normally come to the U.S. "loaded" to begin with)They kept the emloyees on as hired help, which was nice of them. They could've let them go when the store sold, but kept these fine gentleman on. Here's my down-fall, I don't know if any of you out there feel the same about American Buisnesses' the way I feel but the wife, who couldn't & doesn't want to be bothered, who normally sits behind the counter & doesn't even give you the sweat off her brow. I have gone to this store for years for odds and ends, keys paint, today went in to get a screen repaired. I have a duplex and the last tenant somehow bent the frame and there is a hole in the screen they were locked out and did some damage trying to get back in. The gentlemen who is American said come in he back and I can give you a price. He gave me a price that I thought was high but going local I thought it was worth the extra money. then he said I can give you a better screen metal not fiberglass. the fiberglass is junk and the metal will last longer. I sad the screen is 15 years old I think it help up pretty well the last tenant got locked out and trying to break in they bent the screen, He said if I know you were a land lord I would charge you 3 times more. It is because of people like me that the neighborhood is going down hill, I am very careful who I rent to, how dare he say any thing to me. the screen had a small hole and I was getting it repaired. I keep the place clean and repaired. I was so upset when I left there was a guy standing outside and he said he was getting something but was waiting for a friend who went to MAC for money, the store clerk said to him, you know you need more than $10.00 in the machine before they give you cash. The owners just stood there and said nothing when I said I will not spend another dine in this store. this person should be fired. He has no idea what the building looks like or who I am. they need to sell hardware and not judge people read more
