I can't rave enough about this neighborhood treasure. But yesterday Scott really saved me and I'm so grateful that I finally decided to try! Unlike a larger, unfriendly competitor down the street that was open slightly earlier, Lee's had exactly what I needed (a beautiful Moen kitchen faucet) PLUS a brilliant, patient, funny and fascinating proprietor who not only took time on a very busy pre-storm day to help me, he called and canvassed people (plumbers and staff working in local high rises who come in, they know what's good!) regarding my emergency issue. He knows everything about the neighborhood and his experience-- commercial and residential--is invaluable. Who provides this kind of service these days? Amazon? No!! Only Lee's! Stopped into Lee's after a trip to The Bakeshop on 20th and was happy to find a fully stocked hardware store with ample space to look around. The gentleman at the checkout counter was very helpful. We popped in to buy some drano and the guy at the cash register took a look at the one we had selected and was super helpful in informing us how to use it properly. Apparently we had basically picked up industrial strength version that can be lethal if not applied properly. So dangerous it even comes in a BAG. (Don't judge us, we shed a lot of hair). He was a fountain of knowledge and made sure we knew how to wear protective clothing and how long to wait before we took a shower after for safety reasons. He knew WAY more than I would ever expect someone to know about this product and cared more about our safety than he was obligated to. 5 stars for this hardware store. We'll definitely be back. Also feel a need to address the comments about this place being rude. I witnessed him interacting with another customer in a very direct no-nonesense way. Not rude AT ALL. But I could see if someone expected niceties and a "hows your day" they might come down harshly on this place but that wouldn't be fair. It's a hardware store. You're in and you're out and you want someone who knows their stuff to help you out. We will be back! read more

This is an excellent old fashioned hardware store. He has items that I remember from the 50s and 60s growing up. The owner and his workers know their stock and they know how to use the items that they sell. Let's face it. City and suburban people, especially under 35, don't know how to repair anything. I had product delivered from the manufacturer to Lee's hardware this past weekend and had such a great interaction with them! I would definitely recommend this business. Not only were they helpful and responsive letting me know that my order was there and ready but also went above and beyond helping me get the product to my home. They absolutely did not have to help me on that end but they went out of their way to be sure that I got my items quick and easy. Maybe I was there on a bad day or something because nobody else seems to have a story like mine, but this place is completely miserable. I went to get some keys copied last week. No big deal, in and out in a few minutes. I went home to test them out and one of them didn't work so I went back to have it remade. And then this happened: The sign on the door says they close at 5pm. I returned to the store at 4:15pm and went in. The clerk is shutting off the lights and says, "What do you want? Can't you see I'm closing?" I say, "One of these keys you just made doesn't work. Can you remake it?" The guy takes the key from me and starts remaking it, but at this point some drunk/high (?) friend of the clerk's who's in there with him chimes in with something like about my having a problem not being able to see that they're closing. I am annoyed at this treatment and say that if the first key he had made had worked I wouldn't have needed to come back. Drunky friend waves his arms around and says, "Lah-di-dah, if you have a problem with it you can fucking go somewhere else." I don't say anything else but take my key and leave. No exaggeration, this is as close to a verbatim transcription as I can manage without having brought a tape recorder. Completely appalling. I have no idea what is going on at this place, but it is totally unacceptable. Please just walk the couple extra blocks to Rittenhouse Hardware and don't give this hole your business. read more

My first and only experience with Lee's was great. My vacuum cleaner was broken, so I walked it down the street to Lee's for an estimate. While I waited, the clerk inspected the vacuum, identified the problem, replaced the belt, and had me out the door within 10 minutes for only $10. I was originally on my way to Rittenhouse Hardware but I actually decided to stop into Lee's since it was on my way there. Boy was that a mistake. I was looking for mouse traps and when I walked into the store two men who seemed to work there were moving boards into the store. The store is small which is fine and we were trying to stay out of their way but I guess they didn't like that we were standing anywhere close to them moving things. While I was trying to squeeze to the side, one of the guys loudly and rudely told his partner, "You have to keep moving, these kids are in the way." We weren't being rowdy or even talking loudly. We were literally standing there looking at mouse traps and trying to move out of their way. Instead of just asking us directly and politely to move out of the way, he decided this was the best thing to say while we were literally standing 5 inches away from him. On top of that, my other friend was waiting outside for us with her dog and as they left the store to go get more boards, the guy loudly said something along the lines of, "I wish that girl would move that damn dog. They're in the way," and then proceeded to loudly moan, "Move! Get out of the way. You have to move," as he exited. Needless to say after hearing that, I immediately left and went straight to Rittenhouse Hardware. Overall, my first and last experience with Lee's was straight up unprofessional and rude. read more

This is a really nice place to get anything from a light bulb (the owner is an expert in anything luminous) to a jackhammer. It is not Home Depot and they don't always have things in stock but they are more than willing to order it and get it to you in no time. *The owner of the store might come off as a grumpy grinch but it's only towards his employees and that also is in good spirits. read more

Excellent customer service here! They didn't have what I needed in stock, but ordered it for me while I was there and I was able to pick it up two days later. I also love the fact that they're part of a co-op buying group (keeps costs lower and gives more purchasing power to locally owned businesses). I'll most definitely be back here soon! read more

I LOVE Lees. Really reasonable prices. Jesse is a doll. He told me "wow you're really serious about you're lighting!!!! (With a smile). Yes I like it bright in my house and get a depressed feeling when the lighting is dim. I answered him. I don't like those energy efficient bulbs that start real dim and then get brighter. Jesse always helps me find my 200 watt bulbs and three way bulbs that go to 250 of which the store has plenty! (Plus anything else you need) Jesse has always been nice and he works weekend hours which can be difficult!!!!! Lee's Hardware is great. Don't listen to these other people!!! read more

In West Philly is a little hardware store on Walnut near 45th that amazes me with what they are able to cram into such a small area. This store is even smaller! Yet it is jam-packed with useful stuff. I have only been in here once but they had exactly what I needed, and I was a bit in awe of all the other random stuff around. I find it amusing how many people have commented on the clerk's sass; I definitely got to observe this while I was in here. Mom and Pop local hardware store with nice and smart people working there. I had to find a place that does key duplicate as new pet sitter requires a double set. The previous day went to local drug store key me kiosk and keys did not work. The man who made my keys, said someone five minutes before me had the same problem. The keys work. These guys have really good customer service and I am in here all the time. My last big project was how to store all of my heels and work shoes (I love shoes and I may or may not have an addiction! haha) in a house with barely any closet space at all. -Think 1920's, tiny little closet with plaster walls.- My main concern were the walls, knowing we would have to either use shelving or something that needed to be hung off the walls and may end up being heavy. I didn't want things collapsing and bringing pieces of the walls down. I am really not the most handy person around the house but we discussed my idea of using framing wire and figured out a way to implement the idea without putting too much weight on the hooks in the wall. It only took a few hours, ALL of my shoes are now hanging on the wall in a neat little grid, it looks pretty cool! read more

we used to use these people all of the time to buy the lightbulbs for the building I work in. I requested to find another vendor because these people are always so rude and unhelpful. I can only talk to one guy there and he's always busy. The rest of the staff seems unknowledgable and incapable of taking a message and passing it on. I haven't worked with them for about a year. I called them today with a different question. Things haven't changed there. I was still treated rudely and my questioned was answered with just a "no." read more

I walked in on a cold day when a snow storm was threatening. Ten or twelve snow shovels lean against the wall and bags of salt are piled up around them. The store is empty. I hadn't been in there for 20 years. I see the owner who, 20 years ago, was the owner's son. The first thing he says is: "What is it?" As if I'd come in there to ask for a favor instead of buy something. I indicate I need copies of two keys. "Leave'em on the ring!" It was almost funny, this gratuitous hostility. Key making review: I've never experienced keys being incorrectly cut, but my new key didn't work! Also kinda pricey at $2.40 a key, but they didn't hesitate to cut a new one, which also wasn't spectacularly cut (it works only if you don't put it all the way into the keyhole). I went across the street to the shoe repair shop, where the guy carefully cut a new key, which worked perfectly! So, if you need key copies that will work, I'd suggest the shoe repair guy across the street, which costs about the same. Other than that, the store has all the basics you need for a heftier price than you'd get at a big box store, but you pay for the convenience of being able to go across the street for your hardware needs. read more

Yes, the store is pretty dingy, and the staff are colorful. If you want a bright, shiny big box store, this is not the place to go. However, if you're like me and not that handy but trying to learn, Lee's is a godsend. More than once I've gone in and said something along the lines of: "I think I need to fix the thingy that connects to the other thingy in the back of the toilet?" Each time, not only have they been able to figure out what part I need, they take a few minutes to explain to me what I have to do to fix the situation. When you first go in theyre a little uninviting but once you chat with them for a while they are a lot friendlier and more helpful. As a hardware aficionado, I am pretty picky about where I will go. This is the old fashion hardware spot with a mechanical cash register from the 60s. I only frequent places that are well stocked and have staff that are knowledgeable. So this place qualifies on both counts. That is the good news. They also fix stuff like vacuum cleaners too. They have some household appliances too. Now a small word of caution. This place is small and it is a hot mess in terms of organization. They know where everything is but unless you like to root around in bins and on bottom shelves to find stuff, just ask. I personally like this challenge and kinda get annoyed when service is over eager to help you. This isn't a problem at Lee's where they definitely have a laissez faire approach to service. The staff is nice enough when you talk to them but getting there can be a bit intimidating. One dude seems to have a "perma-frown" on his face but he really was very nice when I needed help. I would give it five stars if it were a bit better organized because they kind of have everything. In fact on my way now for some plumbing supplies. read more

I come to Lee's often, they're my local hardware store and I first started coming to them to have keys made because of a referral to them from my building. I've bought a shop-vac from Lee's and they have replaced parts on it that have needed to be ordered because of general wear and tear. Jesse is very friendly and will look into ordering items that they might not have in stock and is very helpful, he often answers many of my questions and he's very friendly. Things that I usually buy at Lee's are general household items: light bulbs, dusting rags, dustpans, household cleaners and other things that I need. I credit the owner for telling me about shop-vacs, I needed a vacuum for small animal paper bedding and he suggested a shop-vac. I've had my micro shop-vac for about a year and a half now and it gets up all of the bedding, pieces of hay, etc. Lee's is in a great location, near Spread Bagelry and just off of the square. read more
