Terrific hardware store. They always have what I need. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

There's a little bit of everything. Selection is good but then there probably 2-3 people who actually know what to do or how to complete something. The person who greeted us was definitely new and the other workers helped out as much as they could. I think it's a solid store. You can probably find anything you're looking for from kitchen stuff, plants, hammers, nails, even knife sharpening. I tried to sign up for their ace hardware program but it was unsuccessful linking my account and they had to take time finding the brochures to apply for a new account. Then it didn't work for the coupon, oh well. I think my knives will be sharp (6.99) per knife. They use the resharp machine that I'm a fan of. Perfect before thanksgiving! read more

As a new resident of Fairmount, I was looking forward to shopping locally but, I'm out $20 and will never be back. The manager was so rude and yelled at me when I followed his directions and went down the wrong aisle. I purchased some drill bits from a friendly enough cashier. Turns out I purchased the wrong sized bits and returned to the store within the hour to exchange them. The manager yet again was so rude. He refused the exchange and said the bits were "tools" and non-refundable and said that was printed on the receipt. The tool in fact was the manager. Too bad he is non-refundable. I had carefully opened the packaging in case I had to return it and neatly taped it back together, His argument was also that he could not resell the item due to packaging. I understand store policies have to be put in place but, if an item is non-refundable and it's not obvious, the cashier should say so. No one reads the top of receipts and even if they did, it is given to you after the purchase has already been made. If he had actually gotten off his duff and helped me, I wouldn't have bought the wrong size and would've upgraded the screws needed. Now I'm just screwed for trying to shop local. read more

I ordered online. Received an email telling me "for curbside pickup call us when you get to store". 215-765-5829. Told "we don't do that". I said, "maybe I should cancel then". Gave my first and last name because I was told store associate would cancel for me. I was then told, "I don't even have an order for you". I got home and the order was cancelled. I called back to ask how the order was cancelled if there was no order there for me I asked for manager. When the person who picked up the phone said "FAIRMOUNT HARDWARE. HOW CAN I HELP YOU"? I asked to "Are you the manager"? The nasty woman on the phone responded ( with a nasty tone of voice) saying, "that's what you asked for isn't it"! She then told me the associate went to her about my order but he was too young to know people have nicknames such as Joe for Joseph (not the name but equally as common) When I asked why the email I received said curbside pickup was available she responded by saying she "set it up herself and it doesn't say that" so, I read the email to her. They have a big selection of hardware and outdoor planting supplies. I came when I needed an extra large pot for my monstera and I got a couple bags of soil as well. Everything was priced well and the customer service was great! I'm not sure what happened to the other costumers where they said the cashiers were rude but I had a positive experience and the lady who rung me up was very kind. read more

This place is such a lifesaver! Fairmount Hardware has saved me countless trips to Lowes and Home Depot. It's perfect when you need things for small home repair and home garden jobs. While the selection isn't what you get at larger, big box stores, and some items have a large markup, they carry a large variety of items and I've always found what I've needed there. The workers are very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable and have always been able to instantly tell me which aisle I can find what I'm looking for. Highly recommended. read more

This store has a great selection and is very reliable when it comes to random home supply needs, however, I came here with my grandmother who is struggling with dementia and the service from the younger employees at the store was appalling. They did not treat her kindly, and gave her weird looks when she spoke and walked away from her like she wasn't talking to them. It was honestly heartbreaking and disappointing. I know they didn't know, and probably thought she was just some kooky old lady, but there is no need to be so rude, to ignore someone, and walk right past them. Haven't been back since. read more

Didn't realize Fairmount Hardware sold Christmas trees (then again I'm pretty new to the area). I must say I was pleasantly surprised at the options. Going to a big box home improvement store has its benefits and weaknesses. When you come to Fairmount hardware, you see the need for a smaller store with more specialty items, and more personable and knowledgeable assistance. There's not an employee in the store who doesn't ask if you need assistance. When I had a DIY project, one of the employees came out to my vehicle to see the furniture item I wanted to repair and refinish. The time and knowledge, with attention to detail was exceptional. The associate went out of his way to ensure I had a solution to my problem. That's not service you get at Home Depot nor Lowe's. At Fairmount, they carry every tire and size of screw, not, and bolt you need. I had gone to both of the big box home improvement stores and neither carried the specialty furniture screws they had in every size at Fairmount. The prices on average are fair, well worth the extra money for the expertise and wonderful service. read more

Always amazingly helpful. Surprisingly huge amount of stock considering the place looks so small. I don't understand the negative reviews. Seems like they're mostly about keys which I've never had cut here. I've lived in fairmount for 6 years and bought a house last year so I've visited the store plenty in the past half a decade. WARNING: DON'T EVER GET KEYS MADE HERE!! I don't know why I gave them so many chances. Maybe because I watched my couture key made by someone being trained on the cutting machine for the 1st time, and was hoping a more senior employee would have better craftsmanship in the future. Staff is cool & they're great if you need something random in a pinch (spray paint, key chain, staple gun, etc.) but the first key given to me for my last apt. was from here and stuck constantly. I got a new one made and will just say I was at a loss at 4am during the scene pictured below. For my new apt. I figured I'd give them one more shot because, hey, they're in the neighborhood. DON'T DO IT! This one didn't even wiggle the lock. Save yourself the time getting locked out of your place and then the embarrassment of asking for a buck and change for the return and just go to Lowes. read more

This store is fantastic! I had bent and broke my one and only car key into two pieces. I was parked and locked out of my car 20 minutes away from the hardware store. I could not have my car towed, because the gear was in park. The tow truck would have to drag my car which would most likely damage the transmission. Fairmount Ace Hardware was the only store that had at least attempted to make me a replacement key, when all others stores flat out told me no. The staff in the store were friendly, knowledgeable and skilled. When I get my next paycheck, I will be returning here to get copies of my car key and future hardware supplies. Went in without anticipating needing help- I just wanted to buy some light bulbs. There were a lot more options than I expected but the staff immediately stepped in to tell me the pros and cons of each, as well as a sale that was running on a particular bulb. I left with a couple of options and returned the one my family didn't like as much. They even "lent" me a ladder (they can't actually lend ladders for liability purposes, but they can sell a used one that can be returned later). I have seen a few complaints on the site about keys, which I suppose is a fair criticism- I wouldn't like it if my keys didn't work. For what it's worth, I've had 6 keys copied at this location and they were all cut perfectly well. Friendly service, knowledgable, highly recommended. read more

I cannot speak to their Christmas trees because I'm Jewish, but I've been to Fairmount Hardware numerous times and they always have what I need at a fair price. I'm not sure if the poor customer service was due to a holiday weekend or if it's because the employees flat out didn't care. I went in to Ace to get key copies made. Before I even knew it, the girl at the counter was grinding away. Hello? I wanted specialty color keys made, but thanks for asking. She had to redo the entire order and better have destroyed the duplicates. Prices weren't marked on items. When we brought a few screws up to the register for purchase, she asked us how much they were. Uh? Price tag? Don't you work here? I also wish the specialty keys had a price tag because they turned out to be pretty costly. I'm not one to go to a hardware store often, but perhaps I'll hit up the burbs next time I need some hardware supplies. read more

Deceptively vast. My one-star deduction is primarily because it's incredibly difficult to find anything here if you're looking for something specific. If you walk in looking for Pledge or a mousetrap or a screwdriver, no problem. If you have a particular size drillbit it may take some digging. That said, if you dig you can find goddamn anything in this place. Including but not limited to: candy, LED blinking snowflake necklaces, cookie tins, seed packets, dowels of many sizes and your standard harware nails/hammers/bolts/mops fare. The people who work the floor are friendly and accommodating. I wanted a refill head for a mop they sell. They ordered it for me and was there three days later. I walked in one day with black spray paint caked on my hands and asked what they sold that would remove it. The guy asked if I just needed to take it off now. I said yes and he steered me to their back room where he let me wash up with some magical soap and saved me the money of having to buy something I would probably never use again. If I don't know where something is they show me. If I need a solution they stick their mind to it. The keys I have purchased there work fine. The reason I don't give them 5 stars is because my dad went to look for flat picture hangers and they didn't have any and it seemed like a pretty usual thing to find at a hardware store. Yes, the cashiers are unfriendly. Who cares? It is a friggen hardware store not a day spa. Yes, the aisles are small and tight. Who cares? You live in a city. If you want big isles support your evil big box hardwares stores instead. You cannot find everything you need without asking. Well, that is an old fashioned hardware store for you. Don't you even THINK about getting a key cut here. I can probably drunkenly chisel you a better key out of play dough than they can provide for you you at this awful establishment. The flowers and plants they have for sale here are WAY overpriced. Vegetables and flowers are often damaged and brown. The nicer succulents aren't even for sale (lol). Little garden tchotchkes are grossly inflated in price and covered in rust--who do you think you are, Anthropologie? Oh, but this is surely not the only place in Philly that copies keys indiscriminately, my friend. Not by a long shot. I found Fairmount Hardware to be deceptively small-seeming when I first walked in, and I was shocked at how far the store stretches to the left when you get past the first aisle. It's like a home-style Home Depot in there with handwritten signs and endless shelves of Stuff. I'm not a home repair guru, but there is a vast selection of products in here beyond your typical neighborhood store. Some of the staff are disinterested, but the ones with personality are way fun. Anyone working in a place that sells brands like "fluidmaster" and items like the "ballcock" should have a good sense of humor. There are many reasons to love living in a big city like Philadelphia. We have world class food, fun things to do, good beer, a lot more tolerance than many places and in many ways, many choices when it comes to whom to support, business wise. On the other hand... A few things SUCK. Grocery stores are horrible. Post offices go from being a mild annoyance in the burbs, to a chaotic nightmare where entire days are swallowed and ruined, whole. And hardware stores are an absolute disgrace of a mess. I give you the Fairmount Ace Hardware. Good luck finding anything. The aisles are literally 2 feet wide, and often further cluttered by stacked boxes. Sections are haphazardly organized (is "organized" really the word I'm looking for?) It feels like you are looking through someones attic most of the time. Except you are paying. Which bring me to the customer service. While I wouldnt be as harsh as some of the other reviewers, who had specific bad experiences, I simply find it to be neglected. So that's something, right? Fairmount Ace Hardware. I moved to the neighborhood almost 3 months ago and have spent a lot of time visiting either Home Depot or this store. I was giddy to come across this Ace which is a fantastic alternative to HD or Lowes. I am there so often they always recognize me. All of the employees are helpful whenever I needed something or had questions. I have gone there to buy plants, seeds, brackets, drill bits, nails/screws, soil, planters, bug spray, you name it. I love walking by the store to take a look at the latest plants. I find the cost of plants is comparable to Home Depot. One of the ladies that works there is always so helpful helping me choose which plants are suited for the weather, shade, etc. One day, since I was buying a bunch of plants, she sweetly gave one of the clearance small plants to my daughter and explained how to take care of it. Another day, when my daughter was with me, another woman cashing us out gave my daughter a coloring book. Very thoughtful. There are some things that you can definitely get cheaper elsewhere (this was true when I was pricing ladders), but for the most part, the prices are comparable and oh so convenient for those of who live in the neighborhood. I really love this hardware store. Having lived in other urban areas, I am not surprised by their prices. Relative to Home Depot or Lowe's, yes, they are more expensive. However, if you live in the inner city and do not have a car, they are a fantastic option. I've visited them many times over the past few months, and each time I've gone someone has asked me if I needed help - they are courteous. As a female architect/builder, this is not always been the case for me in hardware stores. Stock wise, they pack a wide array of items into a small store, and I've even found beautiful specialty items I wouldn't have else wise in a larger chain hardware store. All in all, I would recommend this store to others, if not for their hardware, but for their candy section alone. read more

Fairmount Hardware has a knowledgeable staff. It is also dog-friendly. As I have a dog, I often visit the hardware store for my local purchases and use it as a chance to walk Oscar too. Kevin, one of the managers, has a great knowledge base. I can go in there, tell him what I'm trying to accomplish, of the problem I may have, and he has greatt input on how to do it and knows where all the parts are that you may need to do it. If the store doesn't have the parts or products you want, you can order them from Ace's website and usually have the store receive the items within a few business days. read more

A decent hardware store for anyone living in the fairmount or center city area. ACE has pretty much whatever you need be. I've come at various points to get candles, extension cords, soil, paint, and other random things. The store feels a bit cluttered and cramped, and can be somewhat difficult to navigate, but usually you can find someone to direct you to whatever you need. read more

All I needed was a box cutter and didn't want to travel far. While the info says the shop isn't wheelchair friendly, it's friendly enough to get and move around some. True to many of the other reviews, I found the service to be absolutely abysmal. I approached the cashier to have a set of keys made and she blatantly ignored me, choosing instead to finish her phone call (one very inappropriate for the work place, might I add). Finally, I had to just hand the keys to her and point to the ones I need duplicated. Once I returned home, I discovered that one of the keys wouldn't even work. When I look closely at the copies, I can see how haphazardly they were made-the two new ones don't match each other and the working one just barely matches the original. Never in my life have I had such issues getting a simple set of keys-really, how hard is it to successfully copy a house key? Pretty difficult, I suppose, when you have personal calls to attend to. Instead of giving Fairmount Hardware one star (very tempting!), I went with two because they do have a fairly decent selection. I'd imagine if you knew exactly what you wanted-and were able to find it in that labyrinth-it would be a great neighborhood staple. Just don't expect much by way of service. read more

There is nothing wrong with this store. I've been going here for 6-7 years, and maybe once they didn't have what I needed. They have a lot more than it looks. When I ask for something they help. Keys are the same quality as most hardware stores. You need the big selection? Take the 1-hour round trip down to the South Philly 100,000 sqf big box stores. But you may not find what you need there, either. I've walked out of Home Depot and Lowe's numerous times. I'll take the local, 10-min trip hardware store, and be done with my project before you get back. My only gripe is the early closing hours. read more

Meh. My goto spot is Rittenhouse Hardware at 20th & Pine. RH exemplifies how a great retail operation should be run. As you walk in you are generally asked what you are in need of. They take you to the item instead of pointing or telling you what section it is in. This is why I buy local. I don't need the best price. I'm looking to get the product in my hands right away. Extra points if you offer to order it in or call another store to see if they have it. Additionally the aisles are very narrow and challenging to navigate. To me they stock too many items resulting in a store that feels overwhelming and disorganized. And the plants out front look like sloppy seconds from another shop. I love old hardware stores. This one is jam-packed with goodies. I just moved into a condo a street over and I think in the first weekend I moved in, my dad visited the hardware store 10 times. Mike kept helping my dad, ensuring he got a good deal. I am now the proud owner of a weed wacker, weed killer, screw drivers, and who knows what else. So glad it's in walking distance with great customer service. read more

I am surprised to see that this hasn't been reviewed on Yelp yet. I have had several reasons to be a regular customer here and am never disappointed. A very helpful, knowledgeable staff will help you find just about everything that you need and explain to you how to use it! They have a beautiful selection of outdoor plants and everything that one would need to keep window boxes and small gardens in top top shape.
