I love an Ace Hardware. In my experience, they've been locally owned shops with their own personality tailored to the community they serve, but with the power of a big chain that can access the more unusual items I might want. I've got the app (which is kind of crappy, tbh), the rewards account (never shop without a coupon), and a willingness to buy online and pick up in store so that I don't want to pay for shipping. This location is no exception. Plungers, eco-friendly cleaners, key copies, organizing solutions...they've usually got what I need. Any time I can shop them instead of Lowe's or Home Depot, I will. read more

Bottom Line: A lovely local hardware store with friendly employees. Third Street Hardware is such a charming store! During my Spring visit there were plants out front that drew me in. Once inside I was greeted by friendly employees and immediately enchanted by the original hardware floors, fun gardening supplies, quality housewares and fun gifty items. The no-nonsense hardware and tools are located towards the back and is well organized and clean. This local hardware store is affiliated with Ace and is worth a visit for locals needing supplies or tourists wanting to be dazzled by an old fashioned community hardware store. read more

We often joke that this is one of our favorite shops in Old City, but the fact is, it really is. I absolutely love this hardware store - and we are so thankful that it's close by since it bailed us out on a number of occasions as we settled into our home over the past two years. They curate a great selection of most things you need (typical basics and then some), bring in great selection of seasonal goods, and so much more. The staff is always willing to help when you have questions, and they always seem to have answers that are right. As a part of the Ace Hardware co-op, they have a loyalty program and do buy online pickup in store. Even when they may not have what you need in stock, you can most likely get it pretty quickly. We are thankful to have this amazing shop nearby. Anyone in the neighborhood and surround area should really consider shopping here instead of the big box folks. read more

From the same owners who brought you 10th Street Hardware on Spruce Street, 3rd Street Hardware serves Old City and Northern Liberties. This place is pretty awesome. They sell everything from hardware to indoor/outdoor to kitchen and bath needs. My visit was simply to get a duplicate key cut, and I ended up buying wall hardware and a bathtub soap dish as well. They also sell a HUGE variety of my fav cleaner: Mrs. Meyers! Def going here when I need to replenish my stock. Have IKEA furniture in need of repairs? They carry plenty of hardware to fix it. Need paint custom mixed or a cut of glass or wood? They do that too. They also rent drills and bolt cutters. Their prices are super reasonable. In fact, I was shocked they were as low as they are. I was expecting everything to cost $1 more than things indeed cost. The staff is helpful and friendly. They also feature a great playlist. I'm a big fan of Ace Hardware stores, and this one is above and beyond a good one! Parking isn't great, but it's worth circling the block a couple of times because the service you get here is fantastic. They're always really helpful and they do a great job at keeping things in stock. read more

I'm something of an expert on hardware stores, and for a downtown hardware store, this place is great. This is not surprising since the guys behind 10th Street Hardware opened this branch. With extra square feet, they've packed this place with basic home goods, electrical, plumbing, gardening and even lumber (yes, 2"x dimensional) and glass cutting services. Need paint mixed? No problem. Need something they don't carry in stock? They'll order it for you from their suppliers. Sure, you'll pay a couple dollars more than the big stores on Columbus Blvd., but at least you won't have to drive there and back when you bought the wrong thing. I'm going to freely admit that I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to home-improvement sort of tasks. I'm usually intimidated by going to a hardware store, and I sort of expect the person behind the counter to talk down to me, or make me feel like I'm wasting their time. The good thing is that 3rd Street Hardware is NOTHING like that AT ALL. Everyone that works there is extremely pleasant, and the folks are super helpful in suggesting things, whether it be something simple like needing a mouse trap, to something a little bit more complicated like what screw should I buy to hang a coat rack in a sheetrock wall. I very much appreciated the great customer service and the all around friendliness I found while visiting this store. It is definitely an asset to the Old City area! read more

Listen, i'm not a fan of Home Depot. It's too big, overwhelming, and I don't have the time to walk 1,000,000 miles to find nails. I'm so happy 3rd street hardware opened up near me! The staff is welcoming and they are willing to answer all your questions. The store itself is bigger than you think! You walk in and you can go to the back and around a corner into another hallway with more hardware things (that my tool talk for you). I popped into this neighborhood newbie to find out for myself what all the buzz is about. What a hot spot for just about anything anyone would need in a local home and hardware store! The staff greets you in a genuine but non-"salesy" sort of way. They are knowledgeable and friendly. The inventory is immense. The store itself is open and airy and it's obvious that the store was intentionally designed and not retro-fitted like so many renovated buildings. This is exactly what this trendy upscale neighborhood needed. I'll be back again for sure. read more

How sad am I as an Old City resident, a neighborhood that was pining for a hardware store, to realize that this is probably the best we're going to get. Every time I go in, I'm told that they don't carry my desired product at that location and that they need to order it. Then they forget to order it or to notify me when it finally arrives. After several fails and wasted time, I've reluctantly resorted to Amazon or Lowe's delivery. During the pandemic, I tried to support the store with an order but was told I had to place it online at Ace Hardware. For some odd reason, no matter what device I used -- iPad, iPhone, desktop -- all orders were being processed through Havertown. Trying to get the 3rd Street Hardware site to come up was an impossibility on any device I tried. Perplexed, I figured that Havertown was serving as a central processing point for regional orders. So I emailed Customer Care with my order. Three days later, no acknowledgment. I re-sent the order to Customer Care. Again, crickets. So I called 3rd Street Hardware and left a detailed voicemail. No call back. Now I'm irritated. Next morning, I called Ace Hardware in Havertown and after a 40 minute hold time, they claimed to not have the order. Now I'm at my wit's end. I call 3rd Street AGAIN and am THRILLED to get a live human being .....but my joy quickly turns to irritation when they tell me I've missed the order cutoff for the week, and that I shouldn't have placed my order with Havertown. I explained that changing geographic location on the site didn't work on any devices but they insisted there was nothing amiss with their site. Bottom line is that I've never worked harder to give a company my hard-earned money and end up feeling utterly foolish and deflated. A week and half of effort, all for nothing. I wish they'd offered to do a rush delivery, SOMETHING to mollify me and retain me as a customer. But no. Bottom line: Order placed with Amazon with 5 day turnaround. Kicking myself that I didn't go with the easiest option from the start. Third street doesn't offer delivery so I'll be going the convenience route in the future. read more
