I have been shopping here from time to time. It has cute things and the price reflects it. Today's experience however puts an unpleasant mark. The tea towel I liked very much had no label and no price tag on it, apparently was the last one in stock. The sales person refused to offer a small discount for its unkept, almost non-giftable appearance. He also did not even offer to gift wrap the many things I have purchased. When I asked for two boxes for the cups I bought, he said the boxes were only meant for clothing, even though I saw perfect sizes for the cups behind him. What kind of customer service is this? Just because the store items are cute, no curtesies are given to the customers? Ridiculous. I will not be shopping there anymore. read more

The store seemed like a great place to purchase a gift. However, the workers made me feel very uncomfortable. I was the only Black person in the store, and the workers watched me closely. As I moved about the store, I noticed that the workers would consistently find themselves "working" in the same location where I was looking at items, or I would look up to see them watching me from afar. Upon further assessment, I realized they were not watching other potential customers like this, only me. This ruined my shopping experience and showed me this is not where I should spend my money. read more

I didn't think this type of store existed outside of Center City, so I'm glad to see it annexed on Penn's bookstore! It's a little in the cut on Sansom, but there's a lot packed in here. Unlike a lot of gift shops with similar knick-knacks, I didn't feel completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of products. Sure, you can buy a bunch of Philly regalia or just a new pair of earrings, but you can tell a lot of thought went into the displays and making use of the wider space (certainly a trait of West Philly establishments). I can't say it's exactly -unique- since this concept of store is pretty popular and most shops in this vein end up at the same wholesale shows, but I was pleased with the price of a lot of the things here. By the name Hello world I was excited to visit this space unfortunately I didn't get 1 hello from what seemed to be 2 employees working. 1 was unloading boxes and the other walked passed me and didn't speak. I don't think the experience lived up to the name. I'm very disappointed especially being a New York transplant looking for fun eclectic items for my new home. I myself own a business and the first rule is say hello, acknowledge your patrons, especially because you never know who they may be. Customer service is the key. Hello world is a small knick knack shop that had affordable and less affordable items haha. The good: they have so many different little things too choose from so you are almost assured to find something that will catch your eye The bad: Cost varies with some things being affordable and others not. They have some really nice posters near the door that are only $6 but they are an awkward 20 x 28 which makes it difficult to find a good frame =/. Also the hours are pretty restricted being open only 10-5. read more

So in love with this store! I walked by last Saturday night and saw this diagram of the skull hanging on the wall and was obsessed! The store was already closed so I returned the next day to purchase. The woman working told me exactly what frame they used and wrote it down for me and I went immediately to Ikea and purchased it. There's some random, cute creative things here, and this is a good place to just browse or find a gift for a friend. They also have some creative earrings (slightly pricey though, ~$30 average), which I ended up buying because I didn't pack any jewelry with me. The people at the counter are very friendly and helpful. If you check into Yelp, there's a 10% off offer! The only reason I'm ranking this as 3 stars ("A-OK") is just because this place is pricier than what I would pay for most of the items. read more

I've been meaning to write a review for Hello World since fall semester. If you're in University City, definitely stop into the store. I've had nothing but great experiences purchasing thank you gifts for colleagues and holiday gifts for hard-to-shop for relatives like my Mom, as well as a handbag, tote, and bath rug for myself. As another reviewer said, the prices are amazing -- from $20 for a pair of earrings to $500+ for a designer chair -- Hello World sells home goods, furniture, knick-knacks, and accessories. Stumbled upon this adorable shop on my walk to work on Penn's Campus. It's tucked away on Sansom Street and is connected to the Penn Bookstore so you can either get to it from inside the bookstore or from it's main entrance on Samson. It's one of those great place to find gifts for friends or family whether it be unique and fun (moderately priced) jewelry, or novelty household items (like a travel ping pong set, or lots of other modern home decor), or even stuff for your nephew like funny onesies and toys-- this place has such a wide variety! I think it's especially handy for anyone working around here and needs a quick gift for a coworker or a student who is running home after finals and has forgotten to get their sister a birthday gift: chunky cool scarf: Nailed It. Items in here can range from small earrings that cost $19 to purses that cost $100 and much more expensive but cool home items. This is actually a minus minus star. So having to do some errands in the University City section of philadelphia, I decided to park on Walnut Street and take a brief stroll I stopped into one little quaint Coffee House and obtained a gorgeous fitted hat that supports the cause of oceans. Then I stepped into hello world. Three sales associates all of Caucasian ethnicity watched me walk around smell candles brows look at trinkets. Not one of them acknowledge my presence. And I think I should add that I am a black woman. I noticed that one of the associates casually eased at a an appropriate distance from me but seems to have kept her eyes on me. I am a person that loves artistry, and finding treasures. Casually walked up to one of the associates of which whom never acknowledged me, and I softly and gently at excuse me, is this a private owned store. She acknowledged that it is, and that the owner's name was Jay. I went on to say it's quite interesting, that I walked into this establishment, and by the way the items here are absolutely lovely. I also reiterated that no one acknowledged me. I went on to say I could be a secret shopper I could be someone coming here to buy Novelties for very important meeting. At this point a man came from behind some type of curtain and asked if everything was all right. So despite my whimsical tone, and very unthreatening posture, this gentleman proceeded to ask if everything was all right as if there was a problem?. So I explained to him what I had said to the other sales associate. I advise him that I'm a consumer, most consumers make a decision to patronize, and spend their money upon the first impression of entering and establishment. I also added that that makes a difference as to where you want to spend your money. I made a ripple and a very profound statement to him. And then I smiled with what I know to be a very beautiful smile and I told him all to have a lovely day and I softly shook my head and walked out. So apparently you can be technically in the hood but you're on University campus, so somehow you believe that you're Elite? Not at all you are steps away from the disenfranchised, people on low-income housing, and quite frankly the ghetto. Yet you treat African Americans as if they shouldn't enter your store. How the culture never changes for your America. If you are African-American please do not shop here and please let other articulate, educated, cultured black people know not to spend their American quote unquote currency in the store read more

This is my favorite store in University City. The place feels simultaneously high-end and low-key. Customer service is excellent. I'm never afraid to ask any questions I may have because I always receive very helpful information with a smile. There is a range of items, including jewelry and home decor. The items are well curated. You can tell that the store owner took great care in hand-picking each item to stock in the store. I especially like the selection of jewelry. Great new convenient location with ample space for lots of goodies! I have been shopping at Hello World for years and I was thrilled to see that there's now plenty of room for all of the well-appointed accessories and home goods. This store has an amazing selection of handbags, scarves, and jewelry within reach of fingertips. It's the perfect shop for gift selection. I've got a ton of girlfriends, nieces, and sister-in-laws that Hello World has helped keep me in good-standing with when it comes to birthday gifts, graduations, engagement parties, etc. Still, I can't say enough about the awesome choices for the home. I have purchased a number of items in this category and it's really nice to have special pieces that add that special touch of elegance to your home and not the regular stuff that everybody gets from department stores. Hello World has been my favorite store in Philadelphia for years and I was quite sad when it left 20th Street but our loss here is University City's gain. I am amazed at the range of products and while jewelry is my favorite I have purchased many items from kitchen items, to rugs, to handbags, and accessories. How Jay manages to maintain such a high standard of quality and selection at the prices he does is beyond me.
