We were in the neighborhood checking out a potential new apt while hungry so stopped in here. The service was great, but the food was only okay. The egg rolls had no meat in them whatsoever, but the menu says otherwise so that was a little disappointing. The pork fried rice also left something to be desired, but was good enough. This place should get no star!! First the bathroom was nasty, the owner was so rude the entire time even to the staff. She over charged us for food that was nasty then went and charged us again. This is my go-to spot for a perfect bowl of black bean noodles. I have tried my fair share of black bean noodles from other spots around chicago and other northwest suburbs, but this is as close as you get to a perfect bowl. The noodles are not dry, and the sauce is chock full of flavor and pieces of meat. Staff is friendly and they have a very home-like environment. I would also recommend their jjambbong (not sure what it is called in english there since i couldn't find it on their physical menu, but you can ask for it). read more

My husband and I were visiting from California and were craving for some comfort food because of the cold weather. We thought about getting pho, but decided on some Jjampong. We did have high expectations as my husband is Korean and we have a favorite restaurant in our hometown of Sacramento that serves great Jjampong. We came across this place after googling Jjampong and decided it was worth trying. We loved it so much we came here twice during our 5-day stay in Chicago. The first time we each ordered our own bowls of Jjampong. The portions were generous. The broth was great, nice and spicy. The noodles were amazing. We have no complaints whatsoever... the veggies, seafood, meat, everything about the soup was great. We also ordered potstickers which were pretty huge. The second day we came here my husband ordered Jjampong and I ordered Jjajangmyeon. Again, we were not disappointed. Not only is the food great here, but the service is as well. The owner and servers are very attentive. The restaurant was busy both days we came in so that always speaks volumes in my opinion. This places takes me back when my parents owned a restaurant just like this in Korea. Back in the 80s, Jjajangmyung and Jjamppong was about a dollar. And child labor law was almost non-existent. How do I know? Because I was delivering food when I was in 5th grade! I still remember the damn trashy ass bicycles and walking up 8 flights of stairs carrying an aluminum box with food to feed about 5 people. Anyhow, the jjamppong and the jjajangmyun is your typical korean-chinese. But those dag on deep fried chicken lollipops doused in spicy sauce? That is on point. As you can see in all the pictures, it's perfect to grab with one hand just tear that juicy chicken apart with your teeth while enjoying the ever sweet and spicy sauce. Food comes out relatively quick and service is very attentive. You can't complain much about that right? But wait, you don't speak Korean? No worries, the owner speaks fluent english, huh? You don't speak english either? No worries! She's fluent in spanish also! Same goes with mandarin. If you are none of the above, you probably have no idea what I'm writing down right? I really haven't been to many Korean-Chinese restaurants since I grew up eating that every damn day, but I will definitely stop here again for those spicy fried lollipop chickens. Let me set the scene. My Wife were set to see two different properties with our (now former) Real Estate agent. She stood us up. Not only did she leave us standing outside a building for an hour, she stood us up on a 100 degree day. Those of you who know my Wife, know how much she hates the heat. We left, tired hot and hungry. This is where Peking Mandarin saves the day. Finding this place was dumb luck. We turned the corner, and there it was. From the outside, it looks kind of run down and dumpy, but the inside is wonderfully decorated. The old style booths and decor were quaint and cozy. My Wife must have had a look of Murder on her face, because our server seemed sensitive to her plight. She set us up with cold drinks as soon as we sat down. The menu looked like what you would typically find in a Chinese restaurant in Chicago, but brother....the food was anything buy typical. It was amazing. We started out with the Egg rolls and pot stickers. The Egg rolls were good, but the Pot stickers stole the show. They were a pork-filled, deep fried gift from the Gods. This may have been the best Chinese appetizer I ever tasted. My entree was just as fabulous. I opted for the deep fried pork. Not only was it mouth watering, the portion size was ridiculously-huge. It was enough food for three people. Not bad for nine bucks. Here's the delicious bottom line on Peking Mandarin. I love this place! I grew up right around the corner and this was my favorite restaurant for Chinese-Korean dishes. This is another old school neighborhood restaurant serving the diverse Albany Park community for years. They serve one of my favorite soups, called jampong, which is a spicy seafood noodle soup. Perfectly chewy noodles with seafood and veggies in a spicy broth. Kimchi and pickled radish on the side. It's one of my comfort foods when the weather is cold. My other favorite dish is their beef fried rice, which is unique because they use a type of sticky, short grain rice - with an order of their spicy/sweet chicken wings. I usually take that to-go and have it with kimchi on the side for a simple, but really tasty meal. I recommend their Chinese-Korean dishes (definitely try their spicy/sweet chicken wings) but everything is delicious. read more

Great Chinese on Lawrence. They have cheap specials on their lunch menu, but not for the vegetarian (they're all meat-o-riffic). I stick to the regular menu, and lately I've been crazy about the Black Mushroom with Green Vegetables. I am a huge mushroom fan, and they do not skimp! We'll usually split a bunch of entrees, and have enough leftovers for lunch during the week. This is definitely a family joint, lots of kids around (yes, sometimes they yell, sometimes they cry, and on those super lucky days they kick the booth behind you). The decor is alright, The Dilemma filmed here last year, although I don't think that scene made it into the movie. Due to the filming, they got some cute lanterns to keep for their decor. (I also heard from someone I know that was an extra that Vince Vaughn made Jennifer Connelly cry - not part of the script, he was just being a total dick. Boo!) We had a mean craving for jajangmyun and since our go-to place was closed for the day, we hit up Peking Mandarin. We ordered the jajangmyun, champong and mongolian beef. All delicious and really hit the spot! I was tempted to order the beef fried rice as well but since it was just the two of us, I reluctantly refrained from ordering a fourth dish. Service was as good as the food. It was around 9pm (they close at 9:30) so it was getting close to their closing time but the owner was still super friendly and just had an all around great attitude. Okay, it's really time to let the secret out of the bag and let the white people in on the secret... the mongolian beef is their fourth (if that, best dish here)... 1) jja jang myun is why you go here 2) Jjam pong is why you keep going back 3) Tang Su yuk is what you get each time to share. Order it and stop wondering what all the asian people are eating...once you get it in front of you, eat it, enjoy it and thank me later for expanding your horizons. All the dishes are spelled out phonetically, so just practice reading them aloud before you go and everything will be alright. Now that you know the secrets of my asian peepz...look past the decor, look pass the slow service and begin to appreciate these Korean-Chinese women who have been doing this for over 30 years (I remember it from when I was young) and still slangin' the best noodle dishes in old k-town. The potstickers were clearly hand-made and not frozen which was always nice. They were huge and not too doughy. When my parents were in town over Thanksgiving weekend we ventured to Peking Mandarin for a typical Korean-Chinese lunch of jajangmyeon (black bean noodles), jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and tang su yook (sweet and sour pork/beef/chicken- we went with beef). We enjoyed all three dishes- big portions, good taste, cooked well. The noodles had the right bite and came with plenty of "stuff," i.e. a good amount of seafood with the jjambbong and meat with the jajangmyeon. I especially enjoyed the tang su yook! The only thing I did not like was a side order of veggie eggrolls that we ordered. They were lukewarm and had been overfried so that they were super dark brown, not very appetizing at all. Otherwise the food was on point! The interior is outdated but comfortable with plenty of seating. Another gem on Lawrence Avenue. Stopped in for the lunch special the other day. For starters the place had a great retro look. They have been here for over 30 years. Loved the black booths and counter seats and all the Buddhas that peppered the place. The lunch specials that we had were very good. The Mongolian Beef was delicious and plentiful and the Beef with Garlic Sauce was good as well. Each lunch came with a large cup of Egg Drop Soup. Granted it is not normally the most exciting of soups, but they put a lot of good vegetables in it and really stepped it up a notch. I got an order of their Wonton Soup to bring home to Mom, and she absolutely loved it. It was chock full of veggies and shrimp and had a great flavor without being greasy or overly salty. The place does show a bit of age. My only complaint was that the padding and springs in the booth were shot, so my legs kept pressing against the wood frame of the bench and after a while it became seriously uncomfortable. The service was cordial and the prices could not be beat. Our lunches, minus Mom's soup came to $14 and that included 2 sodas. I brought home leftovers as well. WARNING YOU WILL OVER EAT HERE!! I love this restaurant! My family and I have been coming here for about 4 yrs now.. The food is AWESOME and it definitely hits the spot when your hungover :D The staff is always friendly and the owner goes out of her way to please her costumers i.e, my dad is a big Budweiser lover and when the owner was taking the order for the drinks my dad asked for a Budweiser, the owner said they didn't have any but that she would go to the corner store and get a six pack, so she did! Who does that for their costumers??? I LOVE LOVE LOVE the chicken wings, one order can easily feed up to 3 people. The wings are covered with a sweet but spicy tangy sauce, that goes great with white rice as well. That spicy seafood noodle soup... Words cannot express just how delicious that was. The broth is thick, the ingredients are fresh, the noodles are made in house. Get the spicy seafood noodle soup. And don't get confused when a side of scissors comes with your soup... you should use them to cut the homemade noodles. And the soup isn't he only thing that's awesome here. The kimchi is the best I've ever had. They also make that in house (no big deal) and it's perfect. Not too fermented, nice and crunchy so you can still taste the cabbage. The first time I tried this place was this past new year. My sister recommend it to me. It had great food and good service. The place was a mess one customer was being a real pain. The lady was doing her best order after order. My Mangolian beef was also kinda burnt and the rice was soggy. I decided to give them another chance..... Wow was I surprised ! This is my second favorite Mongolian beef in this city. The sefood soup was perfect. And bravo on the combination seafood platter. Unlike my first experience I really enjoyed the food here. Ugh. So disappointed. =( The owner and the servers are all very friendly as always, but the food... I used to like this restaurant a lot, enough to give 4 STAR. The last time I was there was with my family 2 years ago, and we all enjoyed our food very much. Today I got sudden craving for Jjajangmyeon so badly, enough to prompt me to grab a key late at night and drive all the way. Any JJM could have easily satisfied me, cuz it has been more than a year since I had it and I wanted it so badly. But, the texture of noodle did not feel good in my mouth, the pork in JJM tasted and smelled weird as I chewed the pieces. (And it is generally very hard to smell/taste so because of the thick strong flavored sauce.) I couldn't finish more than 1/3... I would give 1 star, in fact.
