This place specializes in seolleongtang which is a traditional Korean beef bone soup. It was no frills and fantastic. It's always a good sign when there are some older Korean ajussi's in sandals and black socks eating in silence when you walk in. I had the dogani seolleongtang, beef tendon in a milky white broth. The older couple running the restaurant have clearly been making this soup for years. The kimchi was fresh and a perfect side. No one speaks english here and it's cash only but there is a no fee ATM in the restaurant. An amazing restaurant in the heart of Lawrence avenue. If I lived in Chicago I would be here all the time.
My friend and I were craving warm comfort food and drove out to check out this spot. Han Bat is a super hole-in-the-wall, authentic Korean restaurant! They really only have one thing on the menu which is their sullungtang, but you can choose what type of meat you'd like. I went with the flank, while my friend got brisket. The sullungtang was solid. I liked that they gave a lot of meat in the serving, but it could have come with more broth and glass noodles. The kimchi that it came with was good, but the meal overall felt a little expensive for what you were getting. Service is really only run by one lady who is quick and efficient. They are cash only, but there is also an ATM inside the store in case you don't have any! Anyways, this place definitely hit the spot--not the best sullungtang in the world necessarily, but it does the job.

My number one go-to restaurant whenever I'm in town. This is a mom-and-pop Korean restaurant that is super authentic. It's literally run by an old couple with no other servers. They serve pretty much one thing which is the Sullungtang (beef bone soup) with different types of beef like flank, brisket, ox tail... The quality is so good, it's definitely on the same level with the famous Sullungtang in Ktown LA. They only take cash but the there is an ATM inside the store with no fee so it's convenient. Service could be a little slow because they don't have a server but normally this place is not that busy anw. They have plenty of parking outside so no need to find parking. I highly recommend you checking it out.

I was supposed to when I pulled into the awkwardly shaped parking lot to meet my friends over a meal. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived for an early dinner, but a fair number of solo diners or pairs came in by the time we left. Lovely staff. The establishment clearly understands their specialty and sticks to it. I placed a to-go order before we finished because I knew my husband would enjoy the soup as well.

There's only a few people running the shop, and every time I come here, somehow there's only a few people dining in. It's a fairly small space, but beautiful shop. Very peaceful. A good place to enjoy a nice, warm bowl of ox bone soup. It is a bit far from the city center, but it's well worth the trek. The food is delicious. Each meal comes with whole cabbage kimchi, which gets cut up in front of you, and diced radish kimchi. Both side dishes are absolutely delicious and fresh. When the soup comes out, you get to salt and pepper the soup to your own liking. Honestly some of the best Korean food in Chicago.
Such a hearty bowl of soup with the best service!! The auntie there is so kind and kept refilling our kimchi. You order a bone broth soup, which can come with a variety of meats. It comes unsalted, so there's salt for you to add to your liking on the table. Your meal also comes with kimchi radish, kimchi, scallions, and rice! I got the beef brisket soup, which was so warm and comforting! It comes with glass noodles, which adds a fun texture to the soup. They could've been a bit more generous with the meat, but the quality was still there. Lots of four top tables with a few longer tables for big groups! The food comes out super quickly too!

You season the soup with salt provided on the table to your own liking. You can add your own green onion topping as well. The menu is very straightforward, and the place has a homey, no-fuss feel. This style of restaurant and the food they serve isn't for everyone but once you're hooked on it, you'll be craving their soups every so often and you'll be a repeat customer for life. I first tried this style of Korean soup in LA several years ago so I'm glad to have found one very similar in Chicago. It's the very definition of simple comfort food and I don't think any place will make soup better than here for miles around. The restaurant is kept clean and very casual. One lady, who I think is the owner, was our server and cashier. She prepped the scallions on another dining table while we were eating- typical of many Asian restaurants. They have a short menu on the wall and there's only a few choices, basically each soup consists of different parts of the cow. We went with one brisket and one flank. Service is super fast since all the soups are just steaming away in their kitchen. The soups are served in hot clay pots and come with some glass noodles. You must season to taste- salt, pepper, and scallions are provided. They bring out a complimentary bowl of rice, kimchi cabbage and radish. I like to season my with salt and scallions, and then dump the rice in the soup and eat everything with a spoon. The soup goes perfectly with the kimchi and radish. One bowl is more than enough for me- I'm absolutely stuffed by the end of my meal and everything comes out to be around $15 cash per person.
This is my new favorite Korean restaurant in Chicago :) my taste buds have preferred lighter tastes recently, and this place fits that preference exceptionally. I usually don't prefer ox bone soup, but I would get it here in a heartbeat. The kimchi sides pair perfectly with the rich, creamy soup. Be aware that this place accepts cash only, but there's a fee-free ATM in the restaurant. Would highly recommend!!
Han Bat has been a savior during these cold and dreary days. Soup always warms the soul and if we lived closer, we would be most certainly be frequent visitors. The interior/exterior is very unassuming with a small parking lot right out front. Without knowing Korean we had a little bit of trouble knowing what to order, so thank goodness for Yelp photos! We ordered the combination Soo Yook and the Beef Soup with brisket, flank, tripe, honey comb, and spleen. The Soo Yook comes out in a large flat cast iron pan with the beat in a blanket of soup. The boiled brisket and tongue were thinly slices and nicely tender. The soup was refreshing for sure. The beef soup had the some compliments and paired with green onions and glass noodles. I feel like each sip I take is bringing me back to life. The traditional side dishes are not to be forgotten either - the kimchi was delicious!

The food at Han Bat just screams comforting and homemade. It's definitely a hole in the wall spot, and you definitely need to give it a visit! We both got the soup, but you need to add salt and pepper to the soup to make it to your liking. This gives it that authentic feel to a Korean dish, and I love how they give housemade kimchi and radish on the side as well. The soups were warm, delicious, and soothing with the tender meat and delicate clear noodles. The service was great; it's run by an older Korean lady that seems so sweet when she comes to take your order and makes sure you enjoyed everything. She asked how everything was and even offered more side dishes since we finished it all. The ambiance is very simple there; you're seated and read off a menu on the wall. It's also cash only, so I'd make sure to bring cash! (There is an atm there just in case though). Additionally, there's a small parking lot if you're lucky to get a spot. I'd definitely give this place a try if you're trying to get something comforting and not too heavy! read more
My boyfriend brought me to this Korean restaurant, and we both enjoyed our meals here! He ordered the combination soup, and I ordered the ox tail soup. Both were very good. There was a decent amount of meat in both soups. I especially loved the larger ox tail pieces because they had even more flavor. Our soups also came with two kinds of kimchi--radish and napa cabbage. The kimchi had a strong, bold flavor, while the soups themselves were much milder and comforting. After we finished eating, we paid in cash since the restaurant is cash only. This is seriously a hole in the wall spot in the Albany Park/Lincoln square neighborhood which is worth trying if you've never had seolleongtang like myself. I've heard of this "collagen" soup but it is essentially such a clean and light tasting marrow bone soup and you can add in various types of meats. I can see this as the ultimate comfort food on a cold day. Kimchi was also very tasty and home made. Pro tip: bring cash! There is however an ATM inside. read more

Its been on my list of places to visit for some years, but never had the time to visit. I started my journey at 5am from KY and made it to Chicago around 9am, did some shopping at the Korean market and stopped in for late breakfast. There was nobody here when I came in, I ordered the brisket sullungtang. The napa and the radish kimchi came out and then about five minutes later the soup. The soup was good, you can tell that they boiled the bones for long time. It looked creamy! It came with meat and glass noodles. I was not a fan of the kimchi, it hasn't fermented, too fresh and it shouldn't been served. The radish kimchi saved the day, it was good and went very well with the soup. read more

Ambiance: the storefront is very unassuming and may be hard to find at first, as it's tucked away. The restaurant looks a little run down and hasn't seen a renovation, but the food speaks for itself here. The menu is old school and written on the walls. I think mostly everything is under 15$ which is a pretty great deal considering his long it takes to make the bone broth and how filling it is. Food: the restaurant specializes in Korean beef bone broth soup. The entrees have different types of bone broth and meat choices and is a classic Korean dish. I generally tend to get the brisket since it's a nice balance of hearty soup and thin slices of brisket meat. Other soup options include tripe and tendons, if you're more into different textures. The broth is rich and comes unseasoned; you add enough salt, pepper and green onions to your liking. Obviously pour some kimchi/kimchi juices into the soup for true Korean style taste. Service: no frills. Don't expect 5 star service. You'll get your food and refills when asked, but honestly don't need more than that anyways. The owners are a nice elderly couple and you get a real mom and pop shop vibe here with a little taste of home. read more

This restaurant is cash only! If you don't have cash, there is an ATM inside the restaurant. There's only a few places in the US that specializes in Seolleongtang (ox bone soup) and I'm so glad there's one in Chicago. Yes, you need to come here for their soup! Their broth is simple, milky, but rich in flavor. It comes with green onions with salt on the side so you adjust the taste. The kimchi and daikon are fresh and it's just perfect with the soup and rice. read more

This is a small hole-in-the-wall, cash-only korean soup restaurant. The menu is small and only has soups. My bf had been here years ago with his korean friends who raved about it and still come regularly. I got the ox tail soup. It's pricey but definitely worth it! My bf ordered the brisket soup but they gave him the incorrect one with only tripe. We got a replacement and could tell the lady was likely yelling at her husband for making the wrong one haha Our soups came with a few sides and rice. It was very filling. I would come back again and try other soups or even get the ox tail soup again! TIP: cash only but there's an ATM inside. We saw someone use it. Also the prices have random cents but that's to make sure that the end price after tax comes out to full dollars without change. read more
Small Korean restaurant whose seol (sole, haha) focus is serving seolleongtang - Ox bone soup, and doesn't pretend to be anything more. Don't expect much else other than getting soup here - service is quick, the ajumma running the entire show is no-nonsense. Cash only. Pick your own seat and order off the menu on the wall, which is a bit too small to see when you're across the room. As stated before, the entire menu is different iterations of seolleongtang - which here means you get to pick the meat that goes into the broth. My favorite was cow tongue, although brisket or flank are safe bets if you're squeamish. Soup comes out hot, which really hits the spot on cold winter days. Salt served on the side, make sure to season to your liking (the soup itself is served unseasoned), and add green onions as you'd like. Banchan are cabbage kimchi and radish kimchi. A side of rice comes with your soup, make sure to dunk or empty the rice into the soup. It's a simple but refreshing meal. Good price. As a side note, there's also a Han Bat in Los Angeles that's been around for many years; not sure if there's any relation between the two, but it also serves seolleongtang. read more
Bring your monies here, folks! Cause it's cash only! This place is a standard for all Koreans and soup-lovers alike. They've got a standard milky beef broth, and they have a variety of meats they put into the soup depending on your order. I ordered the sukkeum, which is a combination of several different parts of beef. Not entirely sure which parts of cow it's coming from, but it's definitely a delightful assortment of chewy to meaty pieces. I think next time I'm going to try the oxtail. The kimchi is really fresh, and they cut it into bite sized pieces so that you can couple it with a hearty bite of soup and rice. The kkakdoogee, the radish kimchi, are cubed-like and fermented to perfection. The wait time for eight people was about ten minutes, which is really impressive. I imagine that they are able to have some quick turnarounds due to the fact that most of their soups have the same soup b I don't live very close by, but if I did, I'd probably go to Hanbat once a week. Cash only. There's an ATM machine inside if you need it. Don't go in looking for great service and chatty servers. It's your typical good food Asian place with one thing on the menu and efficient, albeit sometimes perceived as unfriendly, service. Especially if you don't speak Korean. They really aren't bad people trying to get you mad, but just busy people who are overworked and not happy. That's OK. You walk in and are served 2 types of Kimchi - cabbage and radish. Both really good. In fact, for a seoulleongtang (name of the beef broth soup) place, good kimchi is a must. It's what completes the meal. Then you get your bowl of rice, which you can eat separately, or dump in the soup and eat that way. Table is also set with green onions, salt and pepper, which you can add to the soup to taste. Also noticed some hot pepper flake paste, which is not a sauce, but you can add to the soup to make it spicy, if that's how you like to roll. choose your cut of meats and intestines, and your soup will be out shortly. There's also sooyook at the end of the menu, which are cuts meat that are cut more thick than in the soup. You will eat these in wraps or separately with different kimchi. At least, that's how it usually is. I'm not exactly sure how it's done here because we just had the soup. The soup is legit. Not 5-star best, but good. I would go back, yes. I just LOVE single item (or almost single item) restaurants. They basically gamble their whole business on one dish - they must be pretty sure it will sell. And these here do. I just didn't like this location. There's just so much traffic getting there after you get off the freeway, and there are lots of potholes, and construction slowing you down every step of the way. The teeny parking lot is also weirdly shaped - it's like a U, but all the cars are to be parked facing one way, so when there is traffic, it's weird trying to maneuver the comings and goings. read more

Came here two times already. I decided to write an review today. Their staff is amazing good. They made me so happy today. I went this place, and their staff greeted me right away, with smile face and hand me menu. I like such service! I don't need to ask, they just know what to do. I also like the food here. Very delicious! The soup is kinda plain so I added more salt and onions. Taste better after I did that. read more

Ordered the which consists of Brisket, Flank, Tripe, Honey Comb, Spleen Beef in their ox bone broth. They had many others but their soup base is the same Side dishes were okay. My favorite being the radish. Rice was pretty good quality (that's my secret in judging these soup places). They only serve one dish here: Seolleongtang (sul lung tang) which is a milky beef broth. Do not come here expecting anything else. I came with my Korean friend who suggested this place because I was craving some sort of soup. I have never tried this particular type of Korean soup, so I was totally down to try something new. One my favorite soups is Yuk GaeJang and I love Korean food in general so why not? The soup base is the same for all menu options except the "spicy beef and vegetable soup." The variation is in the meats. It's all beef and beef parts, so depends on your preference. I love intestines and such so I chose the second one- the mixed which includes brisket, flank, tripe, honeycomb, spleen. They probably should change it to honeycomb tripe and intestine instead because it's a more accurate description but I digress. It came out so fast! Probably five minutes after we ordered. All of the bowls comes with Korean glass noodles (sweet potato noodles like Jap Chae), a bowl of rice, kimchi and kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi), and condiments. The broth is super bland. For how milky the broth looks, I expected some flavor. But my friend explained that it is supposed to be very bland. So use the onions, salt, pepper, and gochujang to season the broth. I am someone who doesn't mind and can't eat spicy, but I found myself adding everything. I added the kimchi in as well. It definitely tastes better after adding the juice from the kkakdugi bowl. I also asked for more noodles because I love those noodles. I saw some people adding the bowl of rice to the soup. There really is no wrong way to eat it. I did not try spicy beef soup, but the table next to me said that it was not too spicy. I'll go back and try it next time. Even though I think this place is a love it or hate it type of spot, I can see myself loving it once I figure out how to make the broth perfect for me. Best seul long tang in the city. This is legit Korean bone broth soup that stacks up with ones straight out of Korea. For those that don't know, Seol Leong tang is a white bone broth that is flavorful without the use of salty, spicy, or sweet ingredients. It comes out as a somewhat bland soup that you then add salt and green onions too. It's incredibly healthy and refreshing but don't expect typical Korean flavors that you might be used to like soon tofu or kbbq. You come here for the food nothing else. read more
