Han Bat is so popular among the Korean Americans in the Chicagoland area and it took me so long to finally try it! If it's your first time trying Korean beef soup, here are some tips!
- add salt and pepper to taste (at table)
- add green onions for brightness + nutrition! helps cut through the fattiness of the broth
- dipping tendons in soy sauce and wasabi adds more flavor to an otherwise bland food
- feel free to pour the rice into your soup! easier to eat and very efficient! it also makes the rice soft and easy to digest
FOOD 4/5
Han Bat is probably the best Korean beef soup restaurant around. The broth is so creamy and rich, plus they give you a healthy amount of meat. My mom and I wanted tendons and flank, so we ordered one of each and shared. If you are eating alone or not planning on sharing, I wouldnt recommend getting the tendon beef soup though because it is a lot of tendons and after awhile it feels very fatty and hard to finish. If youre with someone else though, I thought sharing the meat and tendon was a solid choice. The side dishes are kept simple, as they should be in a restaurant focused on sulungtang! The kimchi is the perfect stage of ripeness (slightly under) and the ggakdugi was delicious! The woman working also cut up the ggakdugi and kimchi for us so it was easier to portion. Make sure to add lots of green onions to cut out the fattiness! I loved that there was just a huge bowl of cut scallions, salt, and pepper on the table, so you can add as much or little as you want. The wasabi that comes with the tendons was on the lower quality, but this is a Korean beef soup restaurant, not a sushi restaurant.
SERVICE 3/5
Dont go in expecting 5 star table service. Like many good Asian restaurants, the service is minimal and straight to the point. The woman was kind enough to cut our food for us, but we never asked her to and I even told her it's okay. Perhaps she understood it as it's ok as an act of consideration, but I really did prefer some foods to be left as they were. Also, when cutting the side dishes, she cut them very quickly and aggressively, so I got some red spots on my shirt. There was only one other table in the restaurant when we were there but I noticed it was hard to get attention quickly. There was one woman working the restaurant (besides the other staff in the kitchen). When we were trying to get refills, the check, or packaging for leftovers, we tried multiple attempts to get her attention and it would take her some time to come to the table. I can't imagine how long the wait would be if there were more tables inside. Maybe it was just that one day, but even for a small restaurant, 1 server seemed inefficient.
PRICE 4/5
The price is solid. It's a reasonable price for food that is often hard to find elsewhere. Tax is 10.25% but that's Chicago for you all! Please don't forget to tip!!!
PARKING 4/5
The restaurant is quite a corner shop in a small strip mall. Free parking in the area is a BLESSING, but I can imagine it being full super quickly during meal peaks. The pavement is also quite worn down so be careful not to drive over potholes. read more
