I am visiting Chicago from CA, and to me, this place was just pretty okay. My mom and I got the gold package, pork combo three but had to get an additional pork belly because the combo portions were sooo small. We were honestly shocked because we thought it was supposed to feed up to 2 people, but barely could fill up 1 person. In addition, the soybean paste stew was pretty bland... I am not sure if i'm just biased because I am korean and had so many, but it tasted like water. I was also shocked that they charge for a refill on salad and banchan as this is the first time I had ever been charged. This place was definitely also pretty pricy, we paid about 150 for 2 people (including tip & tax) The reason why I am still giving the place 4 stars because the service was really good (our server was super sweet and accommodating) and the meat quality was pretty solid. Brought friends here after good experience and really got scammed by the portions. Ordered two large combos for 6 people. They brought one small thing of Kim chi and charged for each additional one. They even charged extra for rice even though it was just someone asking to receive their original rice. It's really sad they choose to do this. Likely won't return. read more

Overrated place. As a Korean, I don't recommend this restaurant. The meat was fresh, but the service was terrible. We placed two separate orders. The first one included marinated items. We expected the server to replace the grill before bringing out the second order, but they boldly placed the next order (unmarinated meat) on the same grill, and the burnt marinade pieces stuck to the meat. The server just scraped it off with tongs but it did remove all of them. Totally unacceptable. Finally, the atmosphere is not family-friendly at all. The music was way too loud. They also have a 90-minute dining limit, which is probably meaningless since I couldn't stand to stay there for more than an hour because of the noise. + Our second order was supposed to include side dish but they did not bring a new set. read more

We came here with a group of 16 for a birthday Friday lunch and it was a great experience! We had tons of food, the place was clean and had great music and music videos playing. Customer service was great! The food was delicious! The japchae was a big hit - we had to order 4 for the kiddos and so were the dumplings. This was a fun KBBQ experience! It's a la carte, NOT all you can eat, but the quality is so much better than AYCE! The staff was super helpful explaining how the menu and ordering worked because it was definitely a little confusing. There are packages and tiers you can choose from, otherwise you can order completely a la carte but it's way more expensive. That said, there were two types of meat I really wanted and wasn't able to get so I had to sacrifice one. One fun thing is that the staff cooks for you, in front of you! The elephant in the room is that Daebak is directly across the street from another Korean bbq place, but I think there's some strengths Daebak has. First, Daebak is a traditional Korean bbq place, which means the employee cooks the meat for you. If the cooking part has always stressed you out or you're tired of being your table's chef, Daebak's professional, skilled employees will cook them perfectly. Second, there's a solid variety of both pork and beef options here. Third, the interior is beautiful! I love the style of this place. The fans are held very close to the grill while cooking so barely any smoke comes off. Daebak is well worth a visit and is an excellent option for Korean bbq in Wicker Park. Love this spot for it's chill vibe and for the both KBBQ and their other dishes! I've been here several times for KBBQ with friends, and it is consistently a great experience and delicious meats. We typically are a group of 4 people and each time we order a small KBBQ set that is estimated to be for 1-2 people. We really like the small Gold Package of the Wicker Park Combo. We love this option because it has a ton of banchan options, a soup, and it's just enough food to satisfy all 4 of us, and leaves us room to order a side dish if we want, without being overly stuffed. This is such a great alternative to an all you can eat (AYCE) spot because you get really high quality meat, lots of variety of banchan, and you leave feeling like you had a really balanced meal!! I can't say that for most AYCE spots. Given what we typically order, it's also a reasonable price. I also like that the servers cook the meat for you so you can have a really relaxed night and not worry about whether the meat is cooked or not. While I do enjoy the cooking experience at other spots, sometimes I just want someone to do it for me! And going here eliminates any potential social dynamic where someone in the friend group is usually the one who cooks and doesn't get to relax and enjoy. For other dishes, we have ordered the seafood pancake and the spicy tofu seafood soup. I love them both! The seafood pancake was wonderfully crispy with a flavorful sauce. We ordered a side of lettuce so we could wrap the pancake in lettuce, which was definitely worth it. The spicy tofu seafood soup packed some heat and I really liked it! It came with rice which was great to balance it out. Service overall has always been friendly! The space is also very clean and I like the casual ambience. My boyfriend and I met up with our good friends and their toddler. My friend is Korean and took care of ordering for all of us and it was pure perfection. I just love when there's someone in the group that takes charge of ordering because they know exactly what needs to be done and you trust them blindly. This is what happened on this day. Refreshing and crisp. One thing I would have liked is maybe some seafood to go along with the feast. Servers come to the tables and set it all up for you, it doesn't get smoky or super hot like in hot pot places for example. They check on your food and take care of the cooking really. I like wrapping the seafood pancake in a lettuce leaf and dipping it into the sauce. It's super crispy and fresh. The soup has a ton of fresh seafood like clams, mussels and shrimp and it comes with a side of fresh white rice. It's actually one of my favorite Korean tofu soups that I've had. I liked that they brought out some sides for us even though we didn't get a BBQ package. We made reservations just in case and even though we came in a little early, they accommodated us. We have been searching the city for good Korean BBQ ever since we moved back from LA 5 years ago. So far the results have been disappointing but Daebak in Wicker Park has been our best experience thus far. The place is pretty cool, the K-Pop videos are hard to take your eyes off (despite the fact that they all look and sound the same) and the decor is fun and bright. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. The food was good, not great but good. The brisket was good, the pork jowl ok, the marinated boneless short ribs were very good. The side dishes were ok but a bit one dimensional (everything tasted of kimchi). The beer and soju selection was decent, all in all an ok dinner. Daebak opened in Wicker Park on Milwaukee near Division (second location in Chicago) about a month ago! I came here with a party of four for an early Father's Day dinner. Easily made reservations online, but we came early enough that the restaurant wasn't crowded yet so we had our choice of seating. I asked for a table with chairs with backs so my party could be more comfortable (the seating along the sides are bench/padded stools. We were warmly welcomed and ordered their premium beef combo with their spicy chicken stew. This package came with purple rice, a few extra bonchon (sides), and a massive stew over a portable gas grill. I was not expecting the stew to be so massive! Their bonchon was delicious and we were able to get refills on our favorites. The meat was so tender and flavorful & cooked for us table side. I loved the fluffy egg and grilled garlic and onions that came with. The chicken stew was perfectly spicy, but be mindful of the small bits and pieces (may contain bones) because the stew has been stewing. Overall, great lively atmosphere with screens playing kpop all around. The set up is very modern and clean. The large garage windows make the space feel very open and not overly crowded despite how many tables there are inside. Love this new addition to the neighborhood.
