I had the chance to visit Happy Cattle BBQ during their soft opening at the Jefferson Street location (in the 88/Jefferson Square shopping center), and it ended up being one of the most fun and satisfying dining experiences I've had in a while.
There are two pricing tiers for dinner: the regular option and the Diamond tier, which is $10 more per person. You can choose between BBQ AYCE or Hot Pot AYCE. We went with the BBQ all-you-can-eat and added the hot pot option for just $4 more per person, which is honestly an incredible value for how much it adds to the experience.
We opted for the Diamond, and it was absolutely worth it. The highlight was the Japanese wagyu (limited to two plates per person), which looked like A4 or A5 short rib. The marbling was beautiful, and once it hit the grill, it rendered down into incredibly rich, buttery bites that practically melted in your mouth. That alone justified the upgrade. The BBQ setup overall is excellent. Cooking over charcoal really makes a difference and you get that deep, smoky flavor that elevates every cut of meat. There was a wide variety to try, and everything we had tasted fresh and well-prepared. Some cuts were especially tender and juicy, while others offered a nice bit of chew and texture, so it never felt repetitive.
Adding hot pot into the mix was absolutely the right move. We chose the Original broth, which is a pork bone broth with Chinese herbs, and it was comforting, flavorful, and a great contrast to the richness of the grilled meats. Having the hot pot option made the whole meal feel more balanced, with lighter bites in between rounds of BBQ. One small thing that would really improve the experience was that the broths didn't have descriptions on the menu, and our waiter had a bit of a hard time explaining them. Totally understandable during a soft opening, but having a simple guide or a few notes on each broth would go a long way, especially for people who aren't already familiar with the different styles. I think having a plain broth without the Chinese herbs would have been more enjoyable for younger kids or picky eaters.
For a soft opening, the service still stood out in a positive way. The staff were friendly, attentive, and clearly putting in effort to make sure everyone had a good experience. Even with a few minor hiccups, the overall hospitality shined through. Shout out to the manager Vincent (I believe that was his name), who was super helpful and nice. Really made us feel welcome.
The atmosphere is clean, modern, and fun. There is a time limit of 2 hours, but that's plenty of time to cook, eat, and really enjoy the experience together. If this is what they're offering during the soft opening, they're already off to a strong start. This kBBQ and hotpot place stands out ahead of all the other similar restaurants for the quality, especially at this price point. You really can't beat it. I'm already planning my next visit! read more
