I walked into Perilla fully intending to grab a few happy hour bites, call it a day, and maybe come back another time for the "real" experience. Then I saw the KBBQ menu and all bets were off. I immediately pivoted and ordered the chef's tasting set, the Diweji, featuring pork jowl, pork collar, and pork belly, complete with an assortment of banchan. Zero regrets. And here's the part that should tell you everything you need to know: I am a certified radish hater. I avoid it whenever possible. Yet somehow, I found myself repeatedly reaching for the radish banchan and asking for more. Even the soup - which also featured radish - was absolutely delicious. If Perilla can convert someone who actively dislikes radish into a fan for one meal, that's saying something. The soju was exactly what I wanted with Korean barbecue: crisp, clean, and refreshing. I appreciate that it was neutral rather than overly sweet. The flavored, sweeter versions aren't really my thing unless the food is setting my mouth on fire. Speaking of spice, the wings were good: juicy, well-executed, and satisfying but I kept wishing they packed a little more heat. They weren't spicy at all, and a bigger kick would have taken them from very good to unforgettable. As for the meats, the pork jowl was gloriously rich and fatty, exactly what you'd expect from that cut. The pork collar ended up being my favorite: flavorful, tender, and with just the right balance of meat and fat. The pork belly was comforting and familiar - the classic KBBQ staple done well, with beautifully rendered edges and that indulgent quality that makes it a crowd-pleaser for a reason. The set also came with potatoes that were unexpectedly delicious. My only complaint? It was far too much food for one person. The service deserves its own mention. Everyone was warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. The entire meal was delivered with efficiency and a smile, making a solo diner feel completely comfortable lingering and enjoying the experience. We had the Cloud 9 and Honey I strung the figs, both were quite unique and very good, surprisingly. What bugged me most was that the whole restaurant seemed to have only one waiter who takes orders. He was quite friendly and detailed in explaining.each and everything. But, that was exactly the problem. The waiter spent so much time on each table upfront. I got way impatient after a while waiting for him to come back to check on us. If we would have known better, we should have ordered and requested everything upfront. We did not expect him to have forgotten (or ignored) us for that long of time. In addition, I would have thought that the food, cooked and uncooked, would at least come out one after the other, at a steady pace. Well ok, they did come at a pace, but a very slow pace, very non-continuing. E.g the rice came out only when almost all meat was gone. So we never warmed up to the mood of having a satisfying meal as we have minimal on the table at any time to work on. Not quite satisfying as a dining meal experience. However, and however, If you want to come and take your time to chat and chat for the whole night, it might be the place. Have fun and enjoy your time with minimal interruption. No rush at all! The moment we stepped in I felt we were transported to an underground speakeasy. What I really love is the two level dining area, and how dark the lighting is in here. Love me some low lighting! We came here for after dinner drinks, so unfortunately I can't comment on the food. Although, it looked and smelled so good. I was out here for a work convention and one of my coworkers suggested to come here and they had reservations available for a big group. This is definitely and upscale dinning experience in Chicago. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They suggested a few things to us to order. We have multiple cuts of meat that were prepped by a cook at a perfect temperature. He cut them perfectly for each one of us to try every single cut. We ordered a rice bowl that was delicious! It does contain pork even though it doesn't clearly say it. Some coworkers ordered tea that came in a unique presentation. The dessert was delicious! Super light, a small portion and just perfect to wrap the meal. One of my all-time favorite meals, an experience and food I won't forget. An elevated Korean bbq experience - the perfect unique twist. The chef's tasting plate was perfect for two of us to split, with the Wagyu being a highlight - the most tender meat I've ever had. Just amazing. The tallow for the grill added flavor to the bbq beyond normal butter and the sauces and banchan were great. Perilla is my go-to takeout spot for when I need something to eat for dinner. I love the fire chicken Korean meal plate. The chicken is spicy and tender, balanced well with the side salad and kimchi. I usually choose the pork dumplings and they are always crispy. I've ordered the tteokbokki rice cakes and the kimchi jigae in the past but noticed that the portion size of the soup keeps getting smaller. Please note the portions are much smaller and everything is paid a la cart unlike the normal korean bbq where it comes with large portions, rice, side dishes, vegetables, sauces, and soup. That's why I call it more elevated! As appetizers, we had the scallion pancake and korean fried chicken. Both were very good with the korean rice wine we ordered. Meats and seafood can be chosen a la cart or with a choice of tiered tasting menus. We got the pork belly tasting menu and a premium tier with beef along with some seafood items a la cart. I ordered take out. I was really looking for some old school traditional Korean food so be forewarned this is not it. Although not traditional, food was good, I got the kimchi jigae and the dukboki. The kimchi jigae i wish it was more sour and had more kimchi. There was a lot more pork and rice cakes. It only came with a small rice whic was super tiny so that was disappointing but I'll def get the medium rice next time because that's more the normal portion. I'll start by saying there are two locations now, so make sure you make your reservations at the correct one. Fortunately, it wasn't busy so they were able to change our reservations location. Needless to say service was and has been fast and excellent everytime I have visited. The meal comes with the bean Sprout Soup which is actually very flavorful and a nice way to wake up the pallete. (5/5) The blistered shishito peppers have crushed nuts and dried anchovies on them for flavor. It's a very unique dish, but it does get boring to eat as the flavor only seems pleasant for the first few bites. It's similar to others I have had but with a nice char flavor on the meat. (5/5) We ordered the middle ranged steak platters and the selection for price seems to be the best value. Meat quality was great but it is a very expensive dinner. If you want to order the sample platters choose this one for the most meat for your dollar. I had some A5 wagyu pieces and chobops, I thought a bit too much rice under that meat but u cant go wrong with thinly but cooked perfect wagyu with some caviar on top and some sushi rice with it. I am from LA and gave this restaurant a visit when I was in Chicago. I was so excited to try this place, given its high ratings and Michelin Bib Gourmands. Unfortunately, this place did not live up to the hype The food was quite standard and lacked the wow factor you'd expect from a Bib Gourmand spot. The only things that wow'd me were the prices. Aren't Bib Gourmand ratings given to restaurants to for its high quality taste at great values? The food was good, but I wouldn't say it's HIGH quality. Also, how is this place good value? They charged $15 for banchan, which is typically complimentary and refillable for free at most Korean restaurants. To make matters worse, they charged an outrageous $25 for a bottle of soju, which is unheard of, even in high-cost cities like LA. The service was also lacking. They forgot a few dishes and we had to repeatedly ask for updates and water. The ambience was nice but it felt like they purposefully didn't tend to our table as much as they did the other tables. Wow, I am obsessed! This place blew away my expectations. Everything was fabulous! Cute spot, had a group of 7 and they had a big table for us! Service was good, drinks took awhile to come out, but other than that great! I had a glass of white wine to start which was the perfect starter. From the starters section we tried the a5 wage Cho bop, this was literally the most amazing bite, so much flavor cooked to perfection. The blistered shishito peppers were very good! The scallion pancake was okay, it was very crunchy. The chicken wings with yum yum were great! Full of flavor! From the for the table section we got the honey butter potatoes, these were insane. Sooo crispy and perfect. The rice cake royale was good, but I would recommend the prime beef fried rice over it! The beef was amazing and the rice had crispy pieces. This was one of my favorite dishes. On the grille we got scallops. This was the best scallop I have had. It melted in my mouth. The marinated short rib was amazing, soooo tender. From the get-go, the team was professional and super responsive, which made planning the logistics very easy. Day-of, the food arrived piping hot and smelled amazing! We ordered the garlic chicken, fire chicken, veggie bibimbop, honey butter potatoes, veggie japchae, and salad with lemon-plum dressing. Everything was absolutely delicious- both chicken dishes were super tender, flavorful, and fresh, but I was partial to the spicy kick of the fire chicken! The bibimbop stole the show for me, however. The rice was perfectly sticky and moist, and the scrambled eggs served on top were fluffy, rich, and probably among the best I've had. Don't get me started on the sauce- I could drink it! Among the rest of the crew, the japchae overall seemed to be the favorite, with a light, refreshing flavor and crunchy fresh veggies. I thought the potatoes would be crispy and sweeter, but they were closer to soft, herby baked potatoes. Still tasty, just not expected. Everyone left full and in high spirits. To those planning an event, I can't recommend Perilla enough as a delicious and unique option. We had the Valentine's prix fixe menu, which was $89 per person. It seems plenty on paper, but honestly, we might just stick to AYCE KBBQ for the same price with more authentic flavor. The best item was definitely the fried chicken. It's hand breaded and so crispy. The bimbimbop was good but no option for stone bowl. The fried sweet and sour pork sounded good but not what I was expecting, I was assuming it would just be crispy pork belly but it was tempura fried. The sauce was great though we took it home and ended up cooking chicken with it with what was leftover. The sauce had some veggies in it and was great. We made a reservation on a Sunday at 5:15pm to celebrate my birthday. Our server Mags was very informative with the selection and offered a couple of suggestions on both cocktails and the tasting plates. We ended up ordering 2 cocktails, the traditional and premium tasting plates, and the perilla sets. The tasting menus were first grilled by one of the grilling crew, and after he instructed us on one, he said we would be able to finish the rest on our own. Here are my individual takes on each item: Cloud 9 - sweeter end with a nice matcha finish Golden Hour - sweet, refreshing, citrus-forward drink Pork Dumplings - 5/5 my husband said they were the best dumplings he'd ever had! They were crisped to perfection, and the sauce was tangy, sweet, and savory. Rice Cake Royale - 3/5 pretty decent and filling dish. Sweetened, fire-grilled bulgogi with large, chewy rice cakes. We opted not to finish this dish to have room for our tasting plates. Traditional Menu - 4.5/5 we really enjoyed the traditional stylings of pork belly and marinated LA Kalbi. Definitely were some of our favorite bites of the evening. Premium Menu - 2/5 decently sized cubes of a variety of beefs. Honestly, I don't really like non-marinated Kalbi for Korean bbq, so this menu was so-so for us. I'd probably prefer an American steak over this. Assorted Banchans - 4/5 the white and regular kimchis were pretty on the mark. I had a few kimchi wraps with my rice! I enjoyed the crispiness of the jalapeno pickle. The scallion salad also paired pretty well with the meats. The pickled radish was a little too fermented for my taste; it might have been better a little sweeter. Soybean Paste Soup and Rice - 2/5 we got one bowl of rice for the couple, so this was a little surprising for us since most KBBQ places give you one rice per person. The soybean paste soup did not have as deep/umami of a flavor as I'm used to. I also prefer a bit more kick in my soups. Generally, we enjoyed our visit to Perilla for the service and ambience. Next time, we might stick to some of the specials and order more a la carte so that we pick our favorites. I really wanted to like this place. The vibe was 100/10. I absolutely loved the interior paintings and the artwork displayed throughout the restaurant. The vibe is romantic and sexy, yet homey. Now, onto the food. I'm a big lover of KBBQ and have tried many spots, but this place was a disappointment. I love fine dining when it makes sense, like those places where you just want to say, "Take my money!" But not this place. My boyfriend took me here as one of our early dates, and this place has been on my list to try. We ordered kimchi fried rice with spam ($18), Chef's Tasting Plates ($75), and Grill Accompaniments ($15). I was thrown off at the cost of the grill accompaniments because these usually come included with KBBQ. The grill accompaniments included banchan (side dishes), ssam (wraps with a few lettuces and 2 perilla leaves, which is ironic the fact that the restaurant is named Perilla), and scallion muchim. It all felt catered toward non-Koreans. The radish soup that they served before the meal was very salty, and I usually like my food salty and spicy. My bf and I each got a cocktail, and I think mine was called an old friend? It was a soju and yuja cocktail, which was the highlight of this meal. When they brought out the spread for the Chef's Tasting Plates, my bf and I couldn't help but laugh at the portion sizes. The presentation was quite shocking. I usually take pictures of everything, but I think I was quite stunned that day. The Chef's Tasting Plates included 2 cubes of Miyazaki A5 Wagyu. Quite the beauty, but 2 pieces?! We couldn't help but giggle during this entire meal. After this came the 4 pieces of dwenjang (soybean) cured pork belly. Once again, I was speechless and forgot to take pics/vids LOL. The Wagyu was delicious, but what a freaking tease. Kimchi fried rice was extremely buttery and salty from a THICC overload of spam. Honestly, I like my kimchi fried rice way more, and my bf agrees. The USDA Prime Ribeye Cap- also delicious, but a tease. Fine dining is a vibe, but I personally wouldn't come back. When you eat something yummy, you want to take your friends and family. If I took my parents there, I'd get slapped for unnecessary spending on things they can make better at home. Still a fun and hilarious experience. I would experience it once, just for the experience. One last thing, they charge for kitchen support for grilling the meats... (which we weren't aware of, maybe missed it on their menu- idk). I hosted a work dinner here in August. I was excited to show my coworkers Korean bbq and this had been on my list for a while. I haven't had kbbq in the city in so long. I've been going to the northern suburbs. The restaurant was pretty empty but was semi-full by the time we left. I don't remember what we ordered, but I remember the service being disappointing. For a place where the customer grills their own food, I was surprised at the lag between our dishes. Were they marinating it to order? It's not like the portion sizes in each dish were significant. Korean bbq is such a soul food and I've spent many satisfying dinners here. They have everything you need, various cuts of meat (marinated and not), soups, and other yummy condiments. You MUST order the LA galbi. It's absolutely delicious with a perfect balance of sweet and savory!! The beef is great quality too, juicy and full of flavor. I think this is their best cut on the menu and prefer it over the non-marinated ones. Pair it with their scallion muchim and kimchi for the full authentic experience. I LOVE their kimchi, it feels super home made and I always make sure to buy extra to take home. For soups, the tofu is the best It has a lot of depth and the perfect amount of spice to end a meaty meal. The soy bean one is a bit watered down imo. Overhyped--don't think it's worth it for the price and feels a bit pretentious. The Korean BBQ was good, don't get me wrong but for the price, you can definitely get the equivalent if not more elsewhere. When it comes to banchan, you'll be expected to pay a la carte. Personally, I think this takes away from the Korean BBQ experience. It feels like a burden to have to order these separately, especially at a whopping $2 per small little sauce dish or $20 set for a table of 4. If you're coming with a large group, be expected to pay a high price just for banchan. Even then, I wouldn't say the banchan is anything amazing. They actually do not offer a large selection either. As for appetizers and entrees, I was also not amused for the most part. The Korean Kimchi Pancake came burnt. The Pork Dumplings were really dry. However, those were redeemed by the Korean Scallion Pancake (which was pretty standard still) and wings. What I was most excited for was the Silken Tofu Stew, but that was also a dissapointment. It lacked the umami anchovy flavor that a good Korean tofu soup usually has. All in all, would prefer to spend my money at a smaller mom and pop place. read more

So glad we finally tried this place! All the boxes were checked: friendly service, cool atmosphere in a historic building, and absolutely the food. Even the soup that the meal starts with blew our minds. We enjoyed all the meats that we grilled--also the scallops were amazing--and some flavorful side dishes. The banchan felt a step above what you get at other Korean restaurants. One person in our party was celebrating a birthday, and the staff made him feel special. Went to the steakhouse and loved it so we had to try Perilla Fare. It's much more casual but the quality and flavor of the food is still high. But having someone cook for you at the steakhouse makes it the easy favorite. The Korean melon salad is one of the best salads I've ever had! The bulgogi is delicious though the size and thickness of the rice cakes overwhelmed the amount of meat. Rice cakes need to be much smaller. The chicken wings were flavorful and crispy. The honey butter potatoes were one of my favorites. The hint of lemon on the crispy potatoes really transform the dish. For our protein, we had the LA galbi, brisket, & shrimp. The LA Galbi is good but not really worth it because you have to fight through the bones for a little bit of meat. The brisket was great, cooked fast and was tender. The shrimp were fresh but didn't have a lot of flavor. The fried rice left much to be desired in terms of flavor but the sauces and all of the pickled veggies helped. read more
