lets start off by saying... the service was GREAT - from the front desk hostess to the busboys, everyone was nice and did their job happily; Our server was amazing, super sweet, patient, and came to check on us the perfect amount of times - not overwhelming. Now for the food... meh. I am a big believer of yelp reviews but this time it failed - we were truly disappointed. The menu was short so we ordered at least one item from each category; calamari, octopus, rigatoni, bucatini carbonara, pizza, snowdance chicken and veal braciole. Dessert was hazelnut cake. the positive: calamari was delicious; perfectly cooked - not chewy. Hazelnut cake was great... it was the consistency of a brownie - chocolatey goodness. the negative: 1. bucatini carbonara arrived in a small mason jar which was then shaken up in front of you and served. the excitement ended there. This dish didn't taste bad but it wasn't mind-blowing either. However this dish made a statement when the pasta only satisfied 3 fork-full... everyone literally had ONE bite. 2. the pizza was burnt; the crust, the bottom of the pizza was definitely more cooked than anyone would of liked. 3. chicken was served cold, it felt like it was sitting in the kitchen forgotten. 4. veal arrived on a skewer, was good but it too was very charred - the dish consisted of 3 pieces of meat, everything else was garnish or onions. read more

I finally got to try this place after I stumbled upon this restaurant during a cold winter day and just needed a place to sit and warm my hands by the bar. It was packed so the next time I would visit, I made sure to make reservations. I had dinner here and the experience was 5 star/panties drop quality. The place is extremely clean, the service from the hostess to the waiter was consistent and the food....I need to come back. I had the suckling pig ( I will not attempt to say it's original name since I will butcher it anyway). The pig with the veggies, potatoes and that gravy was something so comforting during a cold winter night but also filling. For dessert, I had the apple pie crumble. If you are a pie lover, you will definitely need to have this in your life. The apple was so tart, it wasn't sweet nor sour, all the ingredients and how it was baked was perfect. Immediately upon walking into Peasant I could smell the pizza crust cooking in their wood fire oven- heaven. We arrived a bit late to our reservation and thankfully, they were still able to accommodate us. The menu is pretty simple featuring a selection of pastas, pizzas, apps, and entrees. We ordered the calamari to share and when it arrived, they brought it out on a sizzling hot pan like some fajitas. I've never calamari enter the room this way before. What an entrance. It came with some chili oil to dip the squid in and dang, that stuff was amazing. I ordered the rigatoni all vodka and it was *chefs kiss*. I will admit- I would have preferred the pasta to be cooked a minute or too longer as it was extremely al dente, but that is just my personal preference. The flavor was not lacking. There aren't many, if any, vegan options available on the menu. That is something to keep in mind if that is your dietary preference although, I'm sure they can accommodate. I was visiting NYC for the second time. My first visit there, the person I was with - a NYC local- recommended Marc Forgione, the restaurant located on 134 Reade St, New York, NY 10013, named after the famous chef and owner himself. Let me start by saying I have never considered myself to be a "foodie". I am not a food or gourmet enthusiast. This food may have changed that. The food was phenomenal, pricey, but life changing. I had heard Marc Forgione had other restaurants. So when I came to visit the city for the second time, I had to try another one. I chose to visit Peasant after a second NYC local recommended it. I did a quick search online and found it had over 4+ stars on multiple sites: Trip Advisor, Restaurant Guru, Restaurant Ji, Kayak, Menu Mix. The yelp reviews fell behind at 3.5 which made me nervous. But I thought the recommendations and my experience at MF outweighed that .5 Yelp was missing. I thought it was a calculated risk. When we arrived, it was packed which I thought was a good sign. There was a bit of a wait before we placed our orders but I was with good company so I didn't mind. I thought the bread was delicious. Besides the initial wait I thought the service was great, we even got a free little taste of a drink mixture and a whole little presentation on it. Nice touch. I was either really hungry or the food was actually amazing! We got pasta and a few appetizers and I loved it ALL. I even got to try my friend's dishes and had 2 desserts there and nothing disappointed me. We did not get to try the underground wine cellar but my friend had great things to say about it. They didn't have any seating for walks-in on a Thursday night, but we were told we could try downstairs. We entered a wine cellar looking place that was dark and moody with communal tables. It seems like a very vibey spot that all types of people can enjoy whether it be a family, couples or just friends. We ordered a round of drinks for the table and our waitress was very helpful in helping us choose. We also got the shrimp appetizer from their specials, calamari, and a couple of pastas. The shrimp was the star of the show with this flavorful glaze/seasoning on it. I also wish we had gotten the oysters because the table next to us got it and it smelled so good! We also got a round of espresso martinis for the table (they have different kinds!) at the end. Best espresso martini I've had! Overall, great experience with superb food and service. Coziest, top fave pasta spot. You'll def need a reservation for dinner on weekends, and can sometimes snag a bar seat on weeknights. Not cheap, and it's worth every penny. The cheese spread situation you get with the bread is literally magic. Go hard for the burrata and pizza (I like the peps, just know it is ~spicy~). If you're into sardines, get the app with breadcrumbs. I always try to get a pasta off the specials menu, but you can do no wrong with any of your picks. Trust me, I've eaten almost all the things. Good for groups with a reservation, and go for the whole fish/entrees. YUM. Ricotta cheesecake is skippable, but the pistachio ice cream is 100. read more

Dark and vibrant. Loved this place the moment I got in, I could definitely tell they put some thought into the ambiance, the candlelight subtly cuts through the darkness, just enough. The food was delicious, we had the calamari, the clams and lemon fettuccine and the lamb ragu. The latter wasn't my favorite, and the rest didn't necessarily blow my mind, but everything was just right, subtle again, delicious. Good wine selection and attentive, friendly service. Although the pasta is delicious, the pricing and choice to nickle and dime diners is frankly embarassing and ruins the whole experience. How do manage to have the gall to charge $2 for ONE slice of bread for two people. What is the business plan behind that? The irony of the peasant name. I was surprised we were not charged for water and rental of plates and utensils. I think for a full plate of pasta at $40-something management can provide two slices of bread for $2. My friend and I made reservations on a Friday night and were seated promptly. Our waitress was very attentive throughout the entire night, but her presence was never overwhelming or distracting. We both ordered a seasonal Cider cocktail, which was strong but delicious. For appetizers we shared the calamari, oxtails, and bruschetta. For our main dish we ordered the lamb ragu and the lobster pasta. Our favorite dish of the night was by far the oxtails. In all honesty, these might be the best oxtails I've ever had. To top off the night we had the pumpkin olive oil cake, which was warm, moist, and flavorful and accompanied by a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. Peasant was an all around great dining experience. We planned a small girls dinner and wanted a place in Nolita that would have options for everyone. Peasant has a great weekly rotating menu and everything we tried was delicious! We got the burrata to start with and tried some pasta dishes. I had the Rigatoni all a vodka which was PERFECT - super al dente and flavorful. I know my friends really enjoyed the Carbonara and the Squid ink lobster pasta special. We also split the blueberry pie dessert (fantastic) and the Nutella dessert (was okay). For drinks we opted for different wines; I got the Chianti recommend by the server and it was just as described. Medium bodied and fruity which was a great accompaniment to the meal. NoLita is a neighborhood that I wouldn't have set foot in once upon a time. It is now fabulous. Peasant is a charming restaurant, the type of restaurant that every neighborhood should have. There are no peasant's in this restaurant. The crowd here is diverse. Young and beautiful, or old and wealthy. Chef Marc Forgione and his sister Cara, do a wonderful job running Peasant. The kitchen is putting out some amazing dishes. Try the Octopus, or the Grilled Calamari. If I lived nearby I would become a regular. Outdoor seating is a plus. read more

The primary problem we had at Peasant last Saturday was that the waiter did not write anything down when taking an order for 8 people that included salad, appetizers, dinners, and several custom requests for gluten-free guests as well as 4 pescatarians that only eat veggis and fish. We joked that there is no possible way he would remember it all, and that is exactly what happened. He forgot one pasta dish, and so upon reminding him 90 min. later, it showed up however it was ordered gluten-free, and it was not. So they sent it back and started over making another one gluten-free. Then the Brussels sprouts arrived with bacon by mistake. After we were finished with the whole fish, the sauce arrived. He forgot fish sauce is supposed to accompany the fish. Lastly, they proceeded to try and deliver a second whole fish that we did not order. Writing orders down for large parties would avoid all these types of mistakes and would make dining at Peasant much more enjoyable. read more

Everything about Peasant was absolutely perfect. From the hostess who chatted it up with myself and my friends to our server who was very knowledgeable about the menu. Our food was served surprisingly quick. We ordered the Wood Roasted Oysters with Calamari, which was amazing! Then we had the M&M's Meatballs with Rib Eye Steak, incredible! With brussels sprouts, Polenta, and white beans. I'm a bourbon kinda guy so I went with the Sicilian Spice Rack. We also did dessert. Perfect, just perfect! Nothing like the original Peasant. This iteration charged $2 extra for the shape of my martini glass. The $24 where's-the-beef? steak tartare was a large hunk of pizza dough and two little pieces of romaine on top of a teaspoon of tartare. The wine was pour was scant. The entrees, served as casseroles, were ordinary. Our suggestion: "Nothing to taste here: Move on." The original, a 5-star dining experience, is truly missed. read more

Mmm. Love me some Peasant. Came here with a girlfriend and ordered 1-2 more dishes than we actually needed. I would definitely recommend coming here with a large group and trying a bunch of things. (Also I just have a soft spot for the surrounding neighborhood. Nolita and its denizens are especially beautiful in the summer.) I really love a place that offers olives and those thin, crispy breadsticks at the bar. And bread, EVOO, and ricotta for the table once you actually sit down. This is a place to demolish all the carbs with abandon. I wouldn't say Peasant is extremely innovative when it comes to their menu; a lot of the dishes are things you would see at another tapas bar. But everything you order is tasty and well-executed. Except for the plain margherita Neapolitan pizza. The dough fell a little wet and flat in the center while the crust simply tasted salty (I doctored it up by slathering on ricotta). My favorites were the seasonal vegetable salad (just because I love my greens and anything with beets, spring peas, asparagus will get my vote) and the suckling pig special. We were too stuffed to get dessert but the pana cotta sounded glorious. Really liked the atmosphere here. It was really empty when we came in at around 7 but filled up for a crowd that seemed to love late dinners. Our waiter was so warm and welcoming. This is really a 3.75 review the bruschetta was great the, lasagna pin wheels were phenom. The steak was OK, just steak. Drinks were good. My issue is food at the price point. Ate at Peasant last evening at the recommendation of my friend Sal. The food and service was delicious. I had a polpo appetizer and a suckling pig entree. My wife had the razor clams and pacheri with eggplant entree. The roasted apple with caramel and ricotta cheese cake were delicious. Oh, I forgot, the crisp Italian bread and side of fresh ricotta was a great beginning to a delicious meal. My only complaint is the bad lighting. It probably works for a person stepping out on a spouse but to a senior, it is a bit difficult. read more

Peasant has a great ambience and the kitchen looks awesome. Brick ovens with pans and such hanging from the ceilings. It does have that rustic Italian vibe. I love how they start you off with bread and fresh ricotta on the house. The prosciutto and fresh figs were incredible. Had a bit of Parmesan as well. The sea urchin spaghetti had a beautiful garlic flavor too. With so many places making their own version, it's hard to hate it if you're a fan of uni. But it's starting to really get played out. I decided to go with the squab. Done very nicely. Sweet savory sauce with a perfectly grilled squab. I liked it but didn't love it. Skipped on dessert since nothing looked that incredible. This is a nice date place. Are there better choices? Of course, but this rustic little place is worth a try. read more

I love this New York City spot. It was recommended to me by consierge when I was first in NYC as a must try. I always love coming back to this place when I want to celebrate my growth. The vibe is cool and hip for sure. New York socialite central. Give it a shot for a double date or a dinner with good friends. Making reservations for this place was easy peazy......went to open table and had to reserve for 11 people and wala.....it took it online BUT had to reserve with a credit card. Such a cute rustic place....it opens at 6pm on Sundays.....this is in the SOHO area....wasn't bad at all trying to hail a cab either when leaving the restaurant. It had a cute sitting area to wait for reservations plus they had skinny breadsticks at the tables....looked like skinny long crackers. Once our party arrived we got seated right away....well it wasn't busy. So what to know..... They offer specials....their food was delicious. My favorite meal was the razor clams and the rabbit pasta......the flavor and pasta was perfect....rabbit meat was so tender. The razor clams was perfectly cooked....wasn't rubbery and the breadcrumbs was a great addition to it. I would definitely order it again. I had a leg of lamb with creamy polenta.....they were so nice to split the order for my friend and I. The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because my polenta and lamb was not as warm......it was good but I wish it was a warmer. Service was great....I would definitely come back. Though I had not been there in years, my previous enjoyable meals at Peasant had left me with fond memories of the rustic Italian restaurant.  So, when I heard that the place was closing at the end of the year, I knew I had to return and selected it as the spot for my brother's birthday meal.   Upon my arrival, I found my brother's girlfriend's sister waiting for me in the small lounge located just in front of the bar.  We assured the hostess that the birthday boy and his companion were on their way, and she agreed to seat us while we waited.  The couple soon arrived, and we ordered some beverages, including a well-balanced Aperol Spritz for me.  We also went through several baskets of cavernous Italian bread and creamy ricotta cheese spread while we decided on our order. We began the meal with two appetizers.  While everyone else found the Tripe Marinara too gamey, I did not mind the strong organ-based minerality it possessed and volunteered to indulge in the majority of it.  The Sepia included two large cuttlefish that had been baked in the stone oven with tomatoes and white wine.  Though one of the members of our group found the sepia chewy, the rest of us disagreed and rather enjoyed the light Mediterranean flavors.   For my entree, I selected the Spaghetti, which was comprised of Manila Clams of all sizes, as well as razor varieties.  While I liked the generous amount of included shellfish, I was disgruntled by several mouthfuls of gritty sand that I encountered.  I also had a small taste of the Rabbit Lasagna, which was more than enough given its heavy, rich bechamel sauce.  I did hear positive reviews of the veal ragu pasta special and seasonal gnocchi, though. In terms of the dessert, when I had made the initial reservation, I had noted that we would be celebrating a birthday and would appreciate anything they could do for us.  We were thrilled when we received a plate of vanilla Panna Cotta that had been labeled with birthday wishes, only to find a $14 dessert fee on our check.  Since the 3 of us were splitting the bill, we decided not to cause a fuss, but we were certainly annoyed.  First off, how could they charge us for something we had never explicitly ordered.  Secondly, we had not even gotten the chance to select a treat we would actually want to share.  With all of that being said, though we were not panna cotta fans, we did find the rich vanilla custard absolutely delicious. While Peasant no longer would be considered one of my "favorite" Italian restaurants, it still offered above average food in a trendy, buzzworthy atmosphere.  I was glad that I was able to make it there before it closed for good. read more

Also the ricotta bread should be cut in three pieces not two pieces. Superb meal! Warmly welcomed by staff who immediately checked our coats. They announced a 5 min wait for our table (Sat nite, 730pm rez), so we took advantage of the bar for cocktails. They make a nice martini. True to their prediction, our table was ready in minutes. Restaurant is narrow, and the noise level seemed like it was gonna be an issue as we sat in the bar, but once seated, not a problem, and we didn't have to yell to each other. We were going to order apps, then dinner later. Our busy, yet friendly/efficient server encouraged us to order at once, and promised to stagger the delivery, to which he executed perfectly. We started w/ baby octopus in spicy sauce (wonderful), burrata and roasted cherry tomatoes (cheese was melt in mouth delicious), and a wood-fires margherita pizza (crust light, crisp and chewy). For our main courses, we had risotto w/ blue crab (lick the plate good) & tagliolini w/ veal (WOW). Food was superb! We brought our own wine: $50/bottle corkage fee was a little eye opening (am I out of touch??) . . . he'll, it was eye popping. I hadn't been to Peasant in a long time, and I was glad I came back. The service was wonderful, we were not booted out and got to really savor the food and the wine. We sat in the back where I'd hoped it would be a bit more quiet. it was until about 7:30, when diners started being super loud(another the fault of the restaurant). The food was really great, the candles on the back bar made it feel cozy and welcoming. Going back next week with a larger party. Looking forward. read more

Wow. Simply blown away. It's not often I'm compelled to describe a place as the ultimate dining experience - paired with the loveliest ambiance - but this place takes the cake. THE most delicious, fluffy bread I've ever had and literally the best pasta I've ever eaten. Wow. My boyfriend and I were greeted and seated right away (had a reservation for 7 and there were really only people at the bar around that time, I'm still not used to this whole New York eat dinner late type thing). Our waitress was fantastic the entire time, really knowledgeable about the dishes, friendly, and came by just often enough to check on us throughout the meal. We started with the Burrata, so good (hard to go wrong with any cheese) and they bring you bread with ricotta for the table. The ricotta was AMAZING, again, hard to go wrong but it was so fluffy. Paired with their house baked bread in the wood fired ovens.... there's also rosemary baked into one of the breads... wow. For our main dishes we ordered the Pizza Peperoncini E Soppressata (hot chile and sausage) and the vegetarian linguine they had that night. She warned us the pizza was spicy and she was totally right, but if you like that kind of thing you'll be blown away by this pizza. I'd get it again in a heartbeat. The crust was quite possibly some of the best I've ever had. Then, the pasta. It was a pesto linguine with green beans and potatoes and I'm literally craving it as I type this. Never have I had such good pasta before. I could have eaten the noodles plain but I'm not an animal. The pesto was also, you guessed it, the best I've ever had. These chefs know what they're doing. We didn't get dessert because we were so full because we ate every single thing we ordered, but seriously I can't recommend this place enough. GO NOW. read more
