I love having Pearls Hot Dogs right here in Tujunga Village. It's just one of those spots that always feels good to go to. You order at the window, grab a table outside or take it to go--super easy, very local, and just a vibe that's getting harder to find. The food is great. Classic hot dogs, really good burgers, and the tuna sandwich is so good. And they have soft serve too, which is honestly reason enough to go... bring the kids or just go for yourself. We recently returned to our Favorite chili dog shop, Pearl's Red Hots , in Studio City. Wow, it's just great. We drive in from Santa Clarita because there is no comparable chili dog or Chicago dog out here, or in LA Co. We've looked. The flavor is just so awesome, old school. The soft poppyseed bun, snap of the dog, oh so good. As a boy my dad used to take our family down to Art's Famous Chili Dogs on Florence in LA, near where he grew up. They closed in the 90's. They were renowned for being the best. Well they were, but now Pearl's is. Incomparable! The great taste of the past. Okay, the review you've all been waiting for from your long-time Elite Yelper. As you know, I call it as I see it, and I see it as I call it. No bias, no agendas, no BS, not this guy. So, let's cut to the chase even though Yelp loves long reviews and by the time I'm finished, despite cutting to the chase, this will be a long review. I mean, I have yet to say a thing about Pearl's Red Hots. That's about to change. Many moons ago in a far off place called Sherman Oaks, there was a wonderful hot dog stand called The Wiener Factory. It was the best hot dogs anywhere, bar none, none bar, and my Darling Daughter and I ate there three times a week. And then it was no more, due to disgusting landlords trying to up the rent to disgusting levels. One does hope said landlords are rotting in the hot place. Since then, no other hot dog has satisfied me and I've had 'em all, including Pink's, which came the closest but is the farthest (away). And two days ago, Pearl's comes up on DoorDash, out of the blue. I, of course, come here to read reviews. Seems like it's worth trying so I order The Pearl (a chili dog), and a BYOD (build your own dog) with just mustard and onions, both on the poppy-seed bun. I didn't notice you had to add the shredded cheese, but now I know for next time. The fact that I wrote next time will tell you where this is heading. Simply put, THE best hot dog since The Wiener Factory. Every bit as good and maybe even better. You may immediately ignore the one-star and two-star reviews. Just do it because the one-star review is BS or the person who wrote it would have gotten back to the manager - never did. That means there's something fake going on. Can't remember what the two-star review said, but who cares. Anyone who does not understand how great these dogs are should turn in their hot dog cards immediately. In closing because I have to go order the same two dogs for tomorrow's lunch, take it from me, one who is not trendy, is old enough to have had every kind of LA and Valley hot dog known to man (and all other genders), this is the real damn deal. We were sad to lose LBK Pizzeria on Tujunga, but happy that Pearl's Red Hots took over the space. Pearl's Red Hots is a walk-up window to which you can order a variety of hot dog concoctions or create your own. They offer chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, tater tots and onion rings too. If you're familiar with Sonic, Pearl's Red Hots is similar but better. And I do like a quality Sonic location. The owner of Pearl's is no stranger to the block and has been in the restaurant biz for a number of years. He's friendly to chat with, and the staff manning the order/pick-up window have been kind. There are a few outside tables and chairs on Tujunga to enjoy your order but it looks like much of their business is to-go which is what we often do. We order on Pearl's Red Hots to place our order and rip over to pick it up. Street parking available in the area. read more

This is an outdoor dining situation. There is some shelter from the sun with shade from nearby trees, but if you plan on eating there you're sitting outside. Full disclosure, I've never been to Chicago, but have tried an Italian beef from Pop ups and Portillo's in Buena Park. The sandwich itself tasted close to Portillos. The bread was nice, wet (from being dipped in the au jus), and chewy. It was not overly soggy, but when you get it baptized your hands will feel oily and wet. The meat was seasoned well, but the giardiniera was fantastic. It was poppy, bright, and the perfect pickled accoutrement to make the sandwich sing. Finally! A restaurant in Tujunga Village that our community really needs and wants. We've been needing a casual eats place for a long time here: high quality, simple food that won't break the bank and is delicious and casual. Pearl's Red Hots indeed is a gem. They have breakfast until 3 PM, featuring all permutations of breakfast sandwiches and breakfast burritos. They offer eggs, cheese, bacon, sausage, avocado, sweet peppers, shredded beef, vegan sausage, hash browns, lettuce, tomato, and potato. You can pretty much have anything you want for breakfast in a sandwich or burrito or bowl setting. I had the pepper and egg sandwich and it was delicious. Very simple: scrambled eggs, sautéed orange peppers, and a little mayo on a French roll. If I were feeling hungrier and wanted something heavier, I might've gone for the Wicker Park burrito that has slow roasted shredded beef, roasted jalapeño cheese, and giardiniera. For lunch, they offer a wide variety of hot dogs and vegan hot dogs, and Polish sausages on regular and gluten-free buns, corn dogs and veggie corn dogs, burgers, turkey burgers, veggie burgers, pastrami sandwiches, Italian beef sandwiches, tuna melts, chili fries, a cup of chili with onions, and beer battered onion rings. I'm really happy to see that they offer turkey burgers and tuna melts. This gives me great options for when I don't want red meat and when I'm also not in the mood for a veggie burger. If I wanted to make a meal here even lighter, I'm sure I could tailor it by going bunless and asking that it be served on lettuce. Everybody around me looked like they were really enjoying their meals. There was a happy vibe in the air. It's so nice that we now have an option for an eatery that is high-quality but not crazy expensive, the way some other restaurants in the Village are. Their bottled drinks menu offers some hard to find options, such as Dad's diet root beer and chocolate Yoo-Hoo. Also, it's great to finally have a hot dogs and hamburger place! At last! The staff is very friendly and informative, ordered the Pearl Hot Dog that comes with Chili and mustard (no onions by request) on a poppyseed bun. The dog has a nice snap, chili is plentiful and flavorful without being too greasy. The poppyseed bun is definitely soft and gives the impression of being fresh. Great service meets incredible food! Tried this walk-up and order spot last night and had the jumbo chi-dog with 50/50 onion rings and tater tots. As a Chicagoan, I had NO NOTES!! The Turano bun with sesame seeds was perfection 10/10 will be back for their breakfast burrito (came highly recommended by owner, Brad). Polished the meal off with a swirl soft serve gelato and sprinkles which was also a yummy way to end the evening! I was excited to see this new place on my favorite street - Tujunga Blvd in Studio City....very needed...no one has opened up a hot dog place - anywhere that I know of...the menu is great, diversive, the prices are even better. I stopped by today for a 'dawg'...and got the basic,,, jumbo hot dog on a steamed poppy seed bun (the best way to eat it)...with spicy mustard (good to have the choice), raw onions and chopped bacon strips. I tasted the Chili which they offer on the hot dog menu...decided to take it 'on the go' and it was really the best chili I've ever tasted...something 'special' for sure in the recipe. My feedback is: Please offer Kosher hot dogs...this community is very health conscious - Wild Caught Salmon, Shrimp, Branzino, ,etc... no Farm raised....and we like to eat Kosher hot dogs...the closest to organic...the hamburger selection looks yummy and I wish/hope that the owner brings in pasture fed, if not organic beef. We will pay more for that. Unfortunately, because of the above, I won't be ordering from Pearl's as much I'd to because of that. I try and eat 'clean' and hormone and antibiotic free as animals that are not organic are injected with. And kosher slaughtering is healthier because there are no hormones secreted..or as much. A legit Chicago fast food spot is back in the Valley!! The hot dogs & Italian beef are the real deal, folks. Here's what we tried: Chicago Dog: Vienna beef dog, neon green relish, and all the "correct" toppings, wrapped into a poppy seed bun. Briefly worried that the diced peppers were pepperocini, but happy to be proven wrong! Italian Beef: ordered it regular with giardinera. Flavor was on-point, if a little dry -- but that was my fault for not getting it dipped or baptized. They also use Turona rolls for the beef! Like I said, legit! Corn dog: yup, that's a Vienna beef corn dog alright. Mmm. Tastes like summer. Fries: solid and well seasoned. If you threw those in a brown bag and let 'em rest for a few minutes, it'd take just like the corner stands made 'em back in Chicago. Friendly service and a nice little patio to sit on out in front. (No indoor space, FYI) My only knocks are that it's a little pricey compared to what I'm used to paying for dogs, and that parking in that stretch of Tujunga can be crappy. This place could be great but it misses the mark for these reasons: 1. First and foremost, they don't have Vienna Beef hot dogs. Anyone billing themselves as authentic Chicago hot dogs should be serving Vienna Beef. The hot dog Pearl's uses has a much too tough casing (more than just a good snap), and the beef hot dog is BITTER. There's another hot dog place in town that also doesn't have Vienna beef, but their beef is much closer to the texture and taste than this place. Ruins the hot dog, even when it's buried in all the toppings. 2. They have poppy seed buns, but they are a little dry. If they're steaming the buns like they shoud be, I couldn't tell. 3. Not open on Mondays. In such a prominent location on a highly trafficked street, a food business should be open 7 days a week. We aren't happy to see it's closed, but the neighboring restaurants sure are. 4. If you've got something on the menu, you should have it. Today? No chocolate ice cream. Boo! The fries and onion rings are good. Restaurant is worth a try, but if you're a true Chicagoan, you might be disappointed. read more
