There are times I wish as soon as the door opens I will be greeted not by a bell or chime but Adele's song of a similar name as this establishment. Corny, but I think everyone would smile! During the fall and spring semesters, finding a mid-afternoon seat can be quite difficult. Alas, that is not the fault of Pavement, but of those who linger too long and need to find a library. I tried Pavement for the first time today. I ordered the Sunrise on an everything bagel. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The bagel itself was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I liked eating it plain. The egg and bacon were pretty standard. The study space is also really nice. A brief visit to Pavement Coffeehouse on Gainsborough Street turned into quite the affair. Part of the order was forgotten. Another part was corrupted to no end: indeed, my friend and fellow customer ordered a bagel sandwich that she specifically and clearly requested to be prepared with "vegan egg." After all, were she to consume a real and true egg, the kind from a hen's body, she would have gone into anaphylactic shock, leading to a SWIFT AND SUDDEN DEATH. But alas, despite several mentions and several muted giggles from the staff, the bagel sandwich was disgracefully prepared with a real and true egg, the kind from a hen's body. Alas! Fortunately, my friend and fellow customer recognized from a mere glance that the "vegan egg" appeared to in fact be a real and true egg, the kind from a hen's body. And yes, after I sampled it, I confirmed this suspicion. A SWIFT AND SUDDEN DEATH averted! Since we had taken the products and goods to go, we returned to Pavement to confront the staff about their error. With an apathetic giggle, oblivious to the potential gravity of her mistake, the girlie at the counter simply said that they would prepare another. And another was indeed prepared, this time with "vegan egg." So, you ask, with a potentially deadly affair such as this, why has this establishment been awarded two (2) stars? The answer is that the coffee itself and the food itself were refreshing and tasty. Literally so easy to order ahead of time and pick up. They have plenty of options to change up/ add to their normal bagels. Although there is a good amount of indoor seating, it is usually packed so finding a table is often difficult. The music is always extremely loud, which can make it hard to focus if you're looking to find a space to do work. Cashiers are kind and service is always fast. It was packed with people when I came and there were a few people ahead of me in line, but service was really quick and everyone was kind! I had the lavender pearl green tea and it was absolutely delicious! The condiment bar has everything you need from lids, mills, syrup, honey, and sugars. Even though there's a variety of seating, it's hard to find a spot because lots of them are there to study or get work done. Slightly high noise level, but very cute atmosphere overall! This is a cute and bustling coffee cafe with breakfast sandwiches (starting at $5 - $10). We ordered two bagel sunrise sandwiches. The bacon was nice and crispy. The egg was fluffy and hot. It's definitely an egg that's cooked in the microwave or some quick method but I'd does the job. When we went, the cafe was very full and all seats were taken so we took our sandwiches and sat around the corner (5 min walk) to Tatte cafe. The bathrooms are clean and the people seem nice. Don't rely on parking but it's def accessible to the T and super close walk from Northeastern U. They serve specialty coffee but I didn't get any during this visit. read more

Ecclectic furniture that looks like it fell off a truck and some of it looks like it got run over by a truck, too! But the seats are comfortable and most of them have power outlets nearby. As for the wifi, it's free for the first little while. And then you have to pay for it. Interestingly, there are some other "free" signals nearby that you might be able to glom on to. Or change your MAC address if you know how. Oh yeah. The coffee! My latte was perfectly smooth and tasty. The plain croissant was nice and buttery and flaky. Every time I get Pavement, I remember how overrated it is, but this time takes the cake. I spent almost $22 on the smallest cappuccino I've ever seen and a bagel I've been craving all day. Had an experience yesterday that left an extremely sour taste in my mouth. A friend and I were sitting and working at a center table when an older gentleman quietly entered. He approached me and politely asked whether I would be willing to spare some money so he could get something to eat. I didn't have any cash, but was about to get up to buy him something myself. Before I could, an employee came over and started loudly berating the man, telling him he had to go and immediately threatening to call the cops if he didn't leave. When the man asked why he had to leave, the employee told him "you're in here all the time, you have to go". (This didn't seem like a great reason to me, since people need to eat every day!) The man got angry and eventually stormed out, without getting to eat anything. I understand that it's likely against policy for people to enter Pavement asking customers for money, and I know that being asked for money or food can make some people uncomfortable or affect the atmosphere of an establishment. However, the way this employee made a scene and humiliated this man rather than discreetly telling him he can't ask for money and politely asking him to leave was extremely upsetting. It showed a lack of professionalism, and more importantly, human empathy. I don't know what good writing this review will do, I guess I hope an employee will read it and think about how situations like this can be handled in the future. I wonder if Pavement has considered a pay-it-forward system so that instead of having to make a scene when people ask for help, they can prevent discomfort by providing a discreet way for people to ask whether they can get anything for free. I want to emphasize how polite and unobtrusive the gentleman asking me for help was before he was loudly and publicly berated by the employee. The employee cited this man's anger as a reason why he needed to leave but it was the employee who made a scene, humiliated him in front of several people, and made him feel attacked and defensive. The least a company that participates in the gentrification of an area can do is institute a system where people can discreetly ask for free food at the counter--or at the very least train their employees to treat people with respect and empathy even if they aren't the "usual" type of person who comes into the shop. Loved coming to Pavement before now, but this was a violent wake-up call for how people are treated in this shop when they don't look or act like a usual customer. read more

The service is fine, but not memorable and my friend ordered a chai latte and she said it was not very good, but I can only review the delicious sandwich myself, which she also enjoyed.
