Urgh, I hate giving Paul a bad review. There are things they make that I LOVE... I once had an AMAZING frangipane tart. But the last two times I went have left me speechless. For those two times, I would give them ZERO stars... but I know I've had other stuff worth 5 stars so I'll settle for 2 stars at the moment. I am still furious about the last sandwich they sold me. Salami, cornichons, butter on bread. I love love love the combination of those three. I had it once before - so so good! Well this time, the sandwich had TWO cornichons. WTF?! It may have been one actually, not sure, but still. It's unacceptable to sell me a sandwich for 5 euro and then not include one of the three ingredients in it! Second, their big vanilla macaron was one of the worst things I've tasted. It has absolutely NO resemblance to a macaron. The filling was far too sweet and awful, the outside was crunchy and the strangest texture ever. Simply NOT a macaron. Sorry Paul. Scared to try other stuff now. read more

Paul's sandwich is my favorite. Portion is perfect and I literally went there everyday during my business trip haha.

This location had very poor service. There were some touristy customers before me that were taking awhile to order (no French skills unfortunately) and the cashier became pretty upset and frustrated at the whole situation. She became very apparently rude and proceeded to talk rudely to all the other customers. The pain au chocolat was decent, but the service ruined my morning. Nothing against their bread, just the rudeness. It's too bad, I hope it was just an off day for that employee. read more

The supply of evening baguettes is lackluster: hard crust, cold, very dense interior. At about 1.10 EU for the lowest end type, it's almost double what I found elsewhere. If looking to sate a nighttime baguette craving, there are other places still with warm baguettes! On the plus side, the patisseries looked beautiful. I did not try any, though. While we've always liked Paul (as there are locations in the States), going to a Paul in Paris is a much different experience, and we can't stop craving LE SAVOREUX (baguette sandwich with salami, cornichons, cheese and globs of butter). As I write this my heart aches a little, wishing to be in Paris with a baguette from Paul tucked neatly under my arm. Oh and I just found out that they have a location in, ugh, Boston*. Damn you Paul, come to New York already. Seriously though, as far as chain shops go it's pretty much impossible to beat Paul; their quality is exceptional, their prices are completely fair, and the feel of their restaurants is as authentically Parisian boulangerie as it gets (well mostly because they are in fact an authentic Parisian boulangerie ...). They do suffer a bit from this reputation of being a chain, but in reality I have no problem with that at all, because, as you'll find out, they do bread amazingly well; don't mess with a good thing. Walking into this particular Paul, you get the same feel you do from all of their full store locations; classical lighting fixtures that are dimly lit, a large glass display full of sweet pastries and sandwiches, and baskets upon baskets of freshly made bread that smell out of this world good. The staffs is quite pleasant, and are happy to put up with your broken French (or answer you politely in English when you have exhausted your skills). Order yourself a café American, a baguette, and perhaps a croissant (au chocolat of course); take your bread(s) and receipt over to the café bar and wait while a nice young barista named Paul (just kidding) makes your coffee to order, or if you like, squeezes your orange juice freshly from their industrial juicer (the OJ is particularly good here). Once you have your carbs and caffeine situation sorted, take yourself and your cornucopia down to Pont Neuf and watch Paris wake up late, as it does most mornings. This place really does have it going on; if you find yourself in need of a solid cup of coffee and your morning baguette look no further than the white writing on the blackboard that reads Paul (this holds especially true if you are in Orly airport - make sure to grab a loaf before you go through security. Solid (chain) bakery in Saint Germain. I didn't try Paul at the airport or Paul in any other part of the city.... but this Paul in Saint Germain was doing everything right. Staff was friendly (5 stars for this alone in Paris) and the fresh baked goods were more than fantastic. This location is worth stopping at even if it is a chain. read more

Industrial chain with generally subpar products - if you must go with a chain, choose Eric Kayser. The almond croissant was terrible: not at all flaky, completely soggy on the bottom, and with barely any almond paste inside. The baguette tradition was too doughy and pasty on the inside, crust really didn't have any flavor at all. Éclair café was similarly disappointing, with a doughy, dry pâte à choux and an overly sweetened, overly dense custard with a bizarre texture I can't quite describe. On the plus side, they are open on Sundays, and I have to admit I have a soft spot for their large macarons, especially the pistachio and raspberry...while they are too sweet, I'm a huge fan of the texture, crunchy on the outside and very chewy on the inside with plenty of almond flavor. read more

If you must only try one thing at this bakery, it's gotta be the beignets. Paul has the best beignets I've ever tasted in my life!!!! The chocolate filling is like Nutella but with a deeper cocoa note, not too sweet, but complements the dough. They're so light and fluffy... 5 pieces for 2.50 euro (or 50 cents each). I made the mistake of not ordering any to go. The lines for take-out can get long so be prepared with your order, and some of the servers don't speak English very well. We discovered Paul by mistake. we were in the latin quarter tired , from long walks, and hungry. What a gem. I think we had there the best coffee and the best baguette sandwich in all paris. I think when you go to Paris, you love the little cafe's? I do! I love the Mom and Pop places... this however is a Boulangerie, Patisserie, cafe that has several locations around Paris. When I am in St. Germaine, I take a walk through here and I get the the best goodies for the rest of the walk and best of all, there is a beautiful little fruit and vegetable market across the street and I get fresh pressed juice to go!!
