When the (lovely and helpful) front desk of our small hotel suggested Eric Kayser for a quick breakfast before heading to the airport, I knew it was the same as Maison Kayser that up until recently had boulangerie all over NYC. But, it was recommended, nearby, and I figured we were in Paris where it began. Maybe because we had the chain in NY, or because it was our last day, was a big disappointment compared to any other on our visit. Croissant, cafe, Ok. The look, feel and taste of it all was mass- produced chain food, with nothing special about it. Customer service was absent considering it was Tuesday morning and everyone else was on their way to work, more concerned about speed and convenience. It was our only "cookie cutter" experience while in Paris and now we know. If you're a visitor, my guidance is seek out a local cafe, and avoid the chains. read more

We were looking for simple lunch after our trip to the Louvre. And then I recalled there's a boulangerie near the hotel. So we walked back and grabbed lunch here. They got lots of options for lunches. And then a nice lady approached me with a bonjour! My nonexistent high school French responded with "Bonjour!" And then... "Parlez vous Anglais?" Then she asked someone who spoke English to help. He was great and assisted us with our questions. Wife and I ordered a latte and smoked salmon baguette. Latte was smooth and not burnt. This is the location in Rue du Bac and was supposed to be good as it is world-known, however, the croissant I ordered was very stale. The service was slow and I received some rude interaction with a server. I am not sure if it was because they were closing in an hour or my communication was just lost in translation. This boulangerie was by our AirBnBin St. Germain. While extremely convenient, that is not the reason for the five stars. This boulangerie is solid. Baguettes are everything you were told about Parisian baguettes -- toasted on the outside, but fluffy on the inside. More importantly, not a weapon the next day. Croissants are flaky and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside as well. We loved the Parisian flan the most, though. Imagine flan, but with a crust and thicker in the center. We wanted more, but we did not have enough time to drop by again. I will now attempt to make it at home. They speak English, make recommendations if you're indecisive like me, and are extremely patient. Prices are very reasonable. $10 USD can get you four pastries. Good news, Americans! There are a few Maison Kayser locations back home. I learned there are two in DC, so will need to check those out. read more

After a long day of sight-seeing around Europe, so happy we stumbled into this cafe. We were hungry for lunch at an "off hour" meaning that many of the restaurants in the area had already closed for lunch and it wasn't dinner time quite yet. We found ourselves ordering pretty much every kind of sandwich you can think of and had no complaints about any single one of them. In fact, the baguettes were so good that we went back for seconds with just butter on them. I ordered the "Parisian" which is basically a baguette with butter and ham. So simply yet so tasty. They have a great selection of options which also include vegan and vegetarian sandwiches. From salads to burgers to sandwiches and wraps, there's pretty much something here for everyone in your family which is all you can ask for sometimes when you have picky eaters in the house. The desserts...man oh man. The creme brulee was incredible, the macarons were delicious and the eclairs were probably my favorite I tried in Paris. Also, order a croissant. I actually took 3 to go so I could eat them on my days remaining in Paris since I loved them so much. Since we were there at an off time, it really wasn't too crowded making our order. However, suddenly there was a rush of people coming in and then we saw how packed and difficult to order it can be. Amazing quality for a chain. For starters, in a city with surprisingly low quality coffee, the espresso here really satisfied, and my wife loved her noisette. They also delivered one of the better croissants we tried. The selection is pretty large, so we got a salmon broccoli quiche and beignet as well. Both hit the spot. The reason we ended up here is the terrific location, just down the street from the Musee d'Orsay. That's a tough one two punch to top. Fantastic pastries and sandwiches!! Eric Kayser does justice for the croissants and enjoyable baguettes. I'm so glad I had the chance to get breakfast on the go before heading to the Louvre. I ordered a cup of expresso and chocolate croissant. Hands down, I may have died and gone to heaven after my first bite of the croissant. I enjoyed it so much, I made sure to buy one more. Croissant came out flaky, buttery and soft with every bite. The expresso also tasted good. However I would mainly come back for the pastries alone. As for the sandwiches, I ordered a ham baguette with all the veggie fixings. A simple sandwich, I felt like I gained 10 pounds because the baguette alone was super soft yet had great texture from its outer crust of the bread. Thoroughly loved my quick breakfast and lunch meals on the go. Especially for a busy day filled with lots of sightseeing. What can I say? It's a clean, straightforward café. I stopped in after a few hours at the D'Orsay museum. It's the perfect spot for a light snack, light lunch, or just a break. Sandwiches here are pretty good (I liked their turkey/avocado) and above all, reasonable. Sure there are locations sprinkled across the city, but one thing you can rely on is their consistency. I can't say that they have the best croissant, but they're still pretty good. The staff is very friendly and most speak very good English. It may be a bit busy during lunch time (no tables available), but an option is to take your food and eat it along the water, which isn't too far away! read more

I ended up stumbling in here one afternoon after getting lost trying to find the Musée d'Orsay (I was REALLY lost okay!). What a find!! It was the perfect little lunch spot to fuel up for a long day on my feet. They had all kinds of delicious looking sandwiches on fresh baguettes, pastries like croissants, tarts, and eclairs, and heavenly smelling fresh bread loafs. Being that I don't know much French I kinda just pointed to what looked decent. Turned out that I chose a tuna fish sandwich. It was so tasty. The tuna tasted fresh and the veggies weren't wilted or brown which can sometimes happen with prepackaged sandwiches. With the sandwich I got a chocolate eclair. SO YUMMY! Definitely the best eclair I had while in Paris. They gave me a lunch deal (sandwich, pastry, and drink) for around €9. The cashiers working the day I visited spoke great English, and customer service was fine. I didn't experience any rudeness, but they weren't overly friendly which is kinda the normal attitude in Paris from my experience. So happy I found this amazing boulangerie. After visiting Musee D'Orsay we were starving and needed some fuel. Luckily this EK is just a few blocks away from the museum. We walked in and I was in la la land. There was a long line but it moved quick. We ordered two baguette sandwiches. Their bread had sesame seeds and poppy seeds on it. I forget what type of meat we got but they were both delicious. We also ordered a salmon quiche which was a little oily but the crust was nice and flaky. The fruit tart was amazing. I couldn't help myself and grabbed a few croissants too. We got our food to go since it was so packed inside and there were no available tables. Instead we had a little picnic by the seine. Upon our arrival, this place was crowded inside so we immediately knew it was a popular spot and we were happy that we picked this place. Croissant was super flaky and extraordinary. All the breads, pasteries, and chocolate treats looked fabulous and delicious (from the looks of it). The brillant rainbow of colors were amazing. The attention to detail was uncanny! See my photos. We walked from our hotel to get these spectacular croissants, chocolate pastries, and my absolute favorite the apricot tart. Everything here was so good! This Eric Kayser was closest to our hotel. Before making our way out for the day, the Mr & I definitely needed croissants & coffees to fuel our spirits Huge line as we approached & we saw it was mostly locals, standing in the "to-go" line for their daily breads / baguettes. We chose to eat there & went to the left side of the counter where we were directed to seat ourselves & the waitress would come take our order Service was pretty slow but also have to say there were only 2 poor girls working that side of the counter & the place was packed so bring your patience Cappuccinos & Croissants - as with the other location we visited, the capps were small & we needed more for the road. They were also a bit bitter & could have used more creamy milk. There was also NO cute, delicious pistachio madeleine to go along w/ our coffee - boo! I guess for that, you'll need to hit the location near the Louvre Croissants were still flaky & buttery & crunchy on the outside yet soft & doughy on the inside. Our biggest mistake was not getting more for the following morning - they're not open on Mondays & when we arrived late Sunday before they closed, to try to stock up for Monday morning, everything was sold out. From time to time, I try weaning off of EK and going to a boulangerie that isn't a chain to test out more "local" places, but I keep finding myself coming back here! It's difficult for me to write a negative review because I am a fan of their brand. However, tourists beware of being overcharged! I told my server that I was getting my lunch 'takeaway' or 'to-go'. The cashier charged my entire order for 'here', which meant I was paying about 5 more euros than I should have. After I noticed the overcharge, I went back and pulled up that they had overcharged me in Google Translate since my 3 years high school French isn't that good. They asked me for my receipt but since I was not given one, I had little recourse even though she rang me up 1 minute prior. If you ask me, buying bread/baking anywhere else would be foolish (accept maybe from another AB of course). We will have gone to this place a total of 3 times during our 5 day stay (and it's not particularly close to our apartment). Traditional baguette and croissant are perfect selon moi. Vibe is busy so it seems like more of a "grab and go" place, not ideal for sit-down. read more

We found this place on our way to the Musee D'Orsay one day and we came back to give it a try. We ordered: Pain Chocolate Brioche with sugar Eclaire 2 Cappucinos Great, great, great boulangerie. The cappucinos were nicely done and the breads. Wow. There were other desserts there we didn't get to try and locals were walking in to pick up 1, 2, 3, 4, even 5 loafs of bread from this place. Absolutely wonderful desserts and breads. We stopped here twice during our stay in Paris. The first visit we got two tarts to go. One chocolate and one caramel. Both were delicious. The second visit we were exhausted from walking and decided to sit and enjoy our desserts. We shared a lemon tart which was perfect. Like other French places, you pay less for carry out, but we wanted to sit and relax. There is also a very nice WC. Highly recommend this establishment. read more

I used to avoid this place for two reasons. All the girls in my life used to get this spark in their eye when they talked about Eric Kayser. To compound that jealousy, this popular chap decided to name the place after himself, what a prick, right? Well, I finally gave in, and so happy I did because now I get that spark too. A recent quick trip to Paris brought me back here again and the Eric Kayser kingdom still impressed after all these years. I would suggest to stay true and opt for the fresh baked goods as well as the quiche, in particular the one with the artichoke hearts-- as it tasted out of this world fantastic. (Thanks for not using those crumby artichoke hearts that plague American salad bars but instead real mini artichokes with big full-flavor hearts. God.) Any of the croissants will be perfectly crispy and definitely steer close to any baked good covered in fresh berries, figs, apricots or chocolate. Lastly, get their cappuccino.
