I rated his service as 'above and beyond' and would've scored him at 10. However, over the last couple of years, I've noticed a declining trend in quality of healthcare and front office professionalism; wherein, the nurse practitioner held the notion that Diabetes was curable. Since my A1C was in check, she would no longer prescribe the medication that had been keeping it in check. It was not a pleasant experience getting this escalated to Dr. John's attention. When finally that occurred, Dr. John immediately requested a refill for the prescription med, yet made no mention of the NP's error - or that she would be re-trained. Over the years, his office staff deteriorated, particularly his wife - who clearly rules the roost with autocratic rudeness. While I'm grateful for the decades of great medical care I received from Dr. John, I'm happy to see him retire - and hopefully his wife as well, such that patients can receive the awesome care once delivered by Dr. Paul John, MD. read more

Have been seeing Dr. John for two years now as PCP. The care quality is very good and detailed oriented. It does take a bit of time to be able to see him directly but he is very good. Yes there is a $150 yearly office visit fee however the quality of care you receive is worth it. read more

The office pushes all care to the nurse practitioner. If you are lucky enough to see the MD, no exam, just basic questions. I went due to back pain, the NP made the exam, Dr John came in, didn't make any exam, just sent to PT. No thanks. Also the yearly 150$ fee that no one in the office can explain is out of line. I was a patient of Dr. John's for over a decade and trusted him completely which almost cost me my life. After repeatedly bringing up a specific issue and asking him for a specific lab test he ordered it but proceeded to give me an incorrect result either purposefully because he was irritated with me for asking, or inadvertently because he just didn't care. I'm not sure which is worse, but that one act landed me in the ICU with my family not knowing whether or not I would ever go home. That was followed by months of recovery time and the onset of other issues his failure to diagnose me properly caused. I would still be more than happy to chalk it up to a mistake, but he later blatantly lied about the entire situation. If he gives you a diagnosis, especially for a serious illness, please get a second opinion. Don't trust him. read more

Don't go to Dr. John if you have committed the crime of being poor! I came in for an initial consultation in April and requested that I get some meds for my blood pressure. Dr. John recommended that I follow up in three months. But, at the time I was getting ready to schedule another appointment, I had a financial crisis dumped on my lap and didn't have the money to justify another visit, so I called the office and requested that they refill my medication and let's put off the visit. The next day, I get a message saying that they recommend that I find another doctor and that I was a bad fit! Really sorry to bother you guys with my poorness! I had depression, Dr. John prescribed me with a medication to "start" with, he said if I had "thoughts" of hurting myself to come see him and he'd se me at anytime, I thought I had an appointment, I was a day early because I was really needed to see him, my thoughts were getting out of control. I went in the office, they told me my appointment was the next day, I told them I really needed to see Dr. John, they said he was busy. I told them the situation and they were rude and said, "do you not understand? He's busy" I started to cry and said, "this is Fu*king ridiculous". They told Dr. John I cussed them out and he (the staff) sent me a letter saying they would not tolerate the cussing and I needed to find another Doctor. Thank God I have a great Husband and Friends who helped me during this dark time.. Dr. John should NOT be practicing. read more

My PCP for 30 years retired. Dr John came with glowing reviews. I had a new patient visist with Dr. John that went great. Then my first real medical issue was with the NP who misdiagnosed the seriousness of an infection. Luckily I had an appointment for a followup visit with an Ortho Dr (post shoulder surgery) and he said that infection is serious and he referred me to a Dr that had to cut out the infection. I decided I just wouldn't use that NP again. Later I had a physical appointment with Dr John and liked how he listened. Then in May I was in an auto accident and again had to see the NP because Dr John was not available. Her bedside manner was terrible. The only exam she did was to measure the air bag burns on my arm. She offered no advice and was very un-caring. I went to a Chiropracter for all the other issues she was not concerned about. Last week I tried to get a referral to the Chiropractor since my HMO required it. The office person said I had to make an appointment. I said I shouldn't have to pay another $300 for a referral appointment since I was there in May. She said it wouldn't be that much. I said "never mind." I was in the Chiro office with many other people and and kept my voice normal. That staff comment said everyone who sees that Dr has a hard time getting an appointment with the DR. And, at times the NP is hesitant about providing a referral. I called today to make that referral appointment and I am marked "as no longer a patient" becuase I yelled at her and hung up on her. This is the final strike. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get past the office staff and talk to the one person who really cares about people and their problems. Update 4/13/2012 He did not change the practice and is back to his stellar care! He's been my general doctor for over 15 years, and his care/service is 5 star. But he is now in some goofy VIPMD service that would require me to pay an additional $1,675 for the privilege of getting that 5 star health care. I am healthy and when I called VIPMD or whatever they call themselves, they used scare tactics to imply I may have potential health issues I don't know about. This new model is absurd and ridiculous. Honestly, I've never met Dr. John. I guess that's a good thing, in some ways. Means I'm healthy and stuff. This is more a review of his staff and Ivonne, since she's the only one I've met. She's the "lady doctor" who takes care of those annual "lady-type" check-ups. The first person took my stats and was nice and friendly. She led me to my room, where Ivonne soon joined me. She took time to actually talk to me. I didn't feel like she was rushing at all. She asked lots of questions and took time to answer mine. The annual check-up part? Well, it is what it is. She actually has a gentle touch for what its worth. If you have to get lab work done too, it's in the same parking lot, which is very convenient. Like I said, I haven't met the head honcho of the place (Dr. John), but have heard good things about him. If you're in the need of a doctor or a gentle touch to do those annual paps, I recommend coming here. read more

I have been going to Dr PJ for years. I have never had a team of nurses and doctors that care so much about their patients. The girls are fun and caring and both Casey and PJ are so in to their patients and the care of them. I can always squeeze in quickly for a monthly check up without them, I don't know what I'd do. I'm always better, talking to them and they take care of ME. My husband, daughter and son-in-law all go to him. We're a one family that loves our doctors. Had a late emergency today, after hours and although they were closed, they were kind enough to return my calls and text. I can't say enough good things about this Group. My problem is with the Doctors Asistant., but after 10 years of going to Dr John, it seems like I have to deal with her more than i can get to the actual doctor. Naomi and her front desk staff are sweet and funny. Dr. John makes you feel so comfortable, you won't mind telling him about any embarassing affliction you may have. I needed a family practitioner who was not far away...you might not be able to see Dr. John on the same or next day, but his clinical nurse practitioner is also very competent. I feel I'm getting good care from a team for acute problems that don't require a specialist. He will work with your other physicians on your plan of care, and the office staff is friendly and helpful. I feel very good about having Dr. John as my primary physician. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. John for over 7 years and I can say with all honesty that I have never felt more comfortable with the quality of care that I have received. I get my yearly physical with Dr. John every year and he is very thorough and takes the time to explain everything in as much detail as needed. Yvonne Bickham is the nurse practitioner with the office and she "cures" my twice a year sinus infections that is part of living in the pollen filled air of Austin. She is also very thorough and does an excellent job of explaining any questions you might have. My wife now see her as her primary care doctor and is very pleased with her as well. Unfortunately for those of you reading this review they are currently no longer accepting new patients and unless some of us start to die off or move I don't think any of the existing patients will be changing practices anytime soon, but it would be worth your time to keep trying to become a patient with this practice. read more

LOVE Dr. John! He is one of the best doctors I've ever had. He listens and really spends time talking to you. I never feel rushed and he trusts my opinion about my body. He doesn't always agree with my choices (ie: midwife instead of OBGYN) but he fully supports them and doesn't chastise me. He's always interested in what's going on in your life, just in general. A really great guy! I will say I'm not a fan of the new fee procedures, but I do understand it. Lots of places are doing similar things with the new healthcare. I'm also not a fan of his PA (or maybe she's actually a NP I'm not sure). She's made some really bad decisions with my husband's meds previously and isn't the easiest to talk to. I also just prefer to see the actual doctor if I'm paying to see the dr regardless, you know? Mostly everyone here is really nice. I'm sad to see negative things about Sheryl on here as she has always been welcoming and nice to me. Maura is a wiz with the insurance stuff and is good at explaining things. I'm happy to be with Dr John for as long as he's in business. Should my kids ever need a dr they'll go see him, too. read more

Dr. John is very smart and very attentive. I have been going to him for around four years and he always knows exactly what the problem is and exactly how to fix it. On a side note, I'm a hypochondriac and he is very reassuring, and advised me to "stop believing everything on the internet" about what might be wrong with me. He and his nurse Yvonne both talk to you like they are your friends - your really smart friends who know everything about the human body. I agree with some of the other reviews that the receptionist can come across as rude sometimes, so I docked a star for that. Today, I accidentally​ went into yelp, decided to check some businesses etc. I was shocked to see that anyone would write a negative review about Dr. Paul John! I have been a patient of his for approximately 18 years and I've never felt there was a problem of any kind with him or his office. He is extremely professional/personable/knowledgeable and just a good guy or I would have been gone a long time ago. While reading some of the negative reviews he has received, it tells me there is more to each of those stories that clearly isn't written up in the reviews. I lucked upon this amazing clinic 5 years ago. I seem to catch every cold, sore throat, bronchial infection that blows my way. I've been told for twenty years that it's in my mind, that my colds, even though they last for weeks instead of days are, "normal". I felt like I was either a hypochondriac or just a complainer. Yvonne and Dr. John have always taken the time to listen...and, when Dr. John said to me, "we don't always know why, but some immune systems just have some chinks in their armor. Some people have high cholesterol, and some people have high blood pressure inherently. We just have to respond and treat you with this in mind". The problem didn't have a definitive cut and dry answer, but i knew I wasn't being discounted or placated in any way. As far as courtesy, respect, knowledge, referrals, experience, bedside manner, and general trust go...I couldn't recommend any office more highly. read more

My Husband and I have been patients of Paul John's for 16+ years and today we were fired. Officially. With a Certified letter. We've tolerated the snarky unprofessional staff because we loved Paul. We've tolerated a 45 min. drive to North Austin because we loved Paul. We've tolerated the ridiculous "annual patient fee" of $50.00 per person because we loved Paul. We've tolerated the fact that we have to leave up to 4-5 messages before anyone calls back (longest wait time was a week - I had to take myself to Victory Clinic). My story is similar to almost all of the negative YELP reviews and it's a bummer. The issue this time is that I called the office 9 days before a vacation to get a routine prescription that he has filled for years. They never returned my call, so I had to call back everyday until I got their RUDE receptionist. I explained my situation, limited time, would make an apt. for when I returned and agreed to pay their "annual patient fee" over the phone in order to get the prescription I needed. Their office manager (his wife) called me back and said I could no longer be their patient. Shocking. Today's certified letter included them firing my husband as well. Dr. John never bothered to call or see if there was a miscommunication - clearly he doesn't care and it's about every dollar & his wife's mood. Very Sad, because we loved Paul. read more

The once friendly and courteous staff was replaced with a new culture that is dominated by rudeness and laziness. Dr. Paul John has been my GP for many years. I think the best thing about him is that he's very down to earth and takes his time with patients. Very importantly, I always can get an appointment when I need one. His referrals are always excellent. I just saw him with an emergency (brown recluse spider bite). His knowledge was impressive and I was quite happy with his reluctance to treat me with the drug they prescribe to lepers (and his honesty...he confessed that he never had to prescribe it. I've been seen by both & have no qualms with either--in fact, I like both of them just fine--but my wife just had to wait an hour and a half (!!!) for a 5 min. follow-up conversation regarding new medication. [I don't think they understand the true price of health care is not just the cost set by the industry, but also the billable time lost by the patient!] Yvonne was rude to her at first, then apologetic & was complaining about the person who had done the scheduling, admitting that it wasn't the first time something like that had happened. I've just about had enough of this office. Dr John is a friendly guy but the office not so much. I don't know who's fault it is but they couldn't schedule themselves out of a wet paper sack. I make an appointment because I am busy. They have zero desire or care to keep the appointment within 30-45 minutes -- every time. I know this is the "doctor thing to do" but it's old. I have been a patient of Dr. John's for 15 years and he is by far the best family care physician I have ever encountered. I was actually shocked to see several negative reviews but it seems the common denominator of these reviews related to prescription refills. I have never had any of these issues that the people are describing. Everyone in the office has always been kind, courteous, and professional. It seems to me that some of these people leaving negative reviews are upset that they didn't get their scripts filled, perhaps due to the fact that they were in the wrong, so they try to get back at the practice by leaving negative reviews. This seems awfully childish to me and a clear case of "sour grapes" mentality. Here's the bottom line: Dr. John is an amazing Family Doctor and he truly cares about his patients. Over the 15 years I have been a patient, Dr. John could have easily dropped me as a patient due to the complexity of my medical issues, but he didn't. The amount of time he had to spend with me versus the amount of money he was making from a small copay and the small amount that my insurance actually approved, was definitely not in his favor. Let's also keep in mind that Dr John and his staff are obviously human, and sometimes mistakes happen. They are not robots and having an expectation of perfection is absurd. Additionally, if someone is rude to the front staff, I would not blame the front staff for mirroring that type of "rudeness." It goes back to the old saying, treat others the way you would like to be treated. Simple as that. Those of us that are lucky enough to have Dr. John as a family doctor, truly appreciate everything that he and his staff have done for us. For me, he has literally been a life saver!! Once Dr. John retires, finding a replacement family physician with similar knowledge, experience, expertise, and sincerity, is going to be a very difficult task to say the least. read more

My son saw her today for his second sinus infection this school year. She was patient and answered all our questions, but also related to him directly. He was very unhappy about using a nose spray, so she prescribed something her husband uses as well. She brought actual knowledge and hands on experience to my son.
