I have always provided a good feedback of this doctor's office until today when I called requesting an appointment and the front desk / operator person decided to make health decisions for me. I explained I needed to see the doctor because I was feeling sick and she said she wouldn't scheduled me until I spoke with triage. I explained I'm traveling next week and would appreciate seeing my PCP from the last 4 years, to receive his medical input. I just wanted to schedule my appointment and she transferred me to a voicemail. Having an uninformed person making health decisions for me it's not acceptable. When I explained the need to have empathy they transferred me to another voicemail to set a complain with their manager. After four calls I'm very disappointed to say that being bullied by the front desk personnel when I'm dealing with an urgent health issue is beyond unethical. Please do yourself a favor and find another provider. read more

Disorganized incompetent billing department. Save yourself time and headache. Go someplace else.

Let me break it down: Not to get too descriptive, but I've been to this office five times in the past year. TYPICALLY, the visit is fine. HOWEVER, there is definitely room for improvement. First of all, I've seen Dr. Keinarth once -- when I established him as my PCP. My husband has been going to this office (I think he saw Dr. Margolin as a kid) for years, so I trusted his opinion. Dr. Keinarth is very patient, easygoing, and helpful. I liked him very much. Since then, however, any time I need to see a doc for an appointment, he's not available, and I end up seeing a PA. That's not too bad, either, since the PAs are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and that's what counts. At the same time, though, I feel kind of like I'm not important and I have no idea what he's doing if he's not available for appointments. The lab work here is also very good -- although, I can never get the lab results through their website or specified 1-800 number, even though I have the right information. They always have to call me, and I inevitably miss their calls (I work in a basement with no cell phone reception), so we play phone tag until there's finally a window where we're both available. But the front desk staff... There are a few members who are great and friendly, but the few who aren't trained well or can't multitask really do put a damper on things. read more

BEWARE the BILLING DEPARTMENT. Keinarth is a good doctor, but I can't go there anymore since their billing department is criminal. They try over bill your insurance any way they can. You go in for a physical, which by federal law should not have a co-pay, and their "creative" coding department will try to bill you for a regular office visit. They actually try to collect the co-pay visit before physical, so refuse if that's the purpose of your visit. Sure it's only $10-$30 for you on the co-pay, but it's an extra $200 for Dr. Keinarth, when they fraudulently bill insurance. On regular office visits I've seen them bill for tests that never happened and wouldn't cost me much, but would get them money from insurance. I had to have several phone calls to get this revised, which was for the principal of the issue. Watch your bills and complain to your insurance company and Texas state regulators if you see the same fraud. I hope Keinarth is not involved in this scheme. He appears like a good man, but something fishy is definitely going on there. Based on who is waiting in the office, much of Keinarth's patients are senior citizens. This makes his customers an easy target since they are more likely not to understand billing issues. If you are researching doctors for your geriatric parents, please beware of using Keinarth or the other doctor, Margolin. read more

Very caring and compassionate doctor who takes the time needed for consultation rather than in and out as fast as possible.

My exp w/ this practice was definitely not impressive. You will mostly meet an NP or PA not the Dr. themselves. Specific example, I was meeting my urologist in another practice for another reason but he mentioned it looked like I had a hernia. So I made an apt w/ Dr. Keinarth who was unavailable so I met with the NP/PA Kristin after waiting for abt 20 minutes. After the RN took my usual vitals I met w/ Kristin whose advice was that if my urologist thought that I had a hernia then I must need one. She suggested a script for imaging and then said I should simply check w/ the surgeon. I met w/ the surgeon and scheduled surgery 4 wks out. Since my hernia appeared to be getting worse, I called back Dr. Keinarth's practice abd asked if Kristin could give me the script she originally planned to give me. I was told that Kristin was out for a week. I asked if my Dr. Keinarth could issue one. I was given a stern No. I had seen a surgeon and that was that. So, my visit w/ Kristin was pointless and an unecessary expense. Remember, she said that since my urologist suspected hernia then I must have one. I had explained this when making my apt with Kristin. They could then and there have given me a referral to a surgeon. No need to go in. I received poor care at that visit, and was given WebMD type service. I will not be going back. Staff and services are ok, but I've received way better services and compassionate care. read more

Same issue with billing issues. They chose out of network labs for testing. I was charged $400 and was late on the second half of a payment. They said they would not see me again or schedule an appt. Rude on the phone and will now switch doctors. read more

I want to echo some of the comments below about the problematic office staff. I saw a PA for an infection yesterday (you'll probably see a PA unless your appointment was scheduled fairly far in advance), but she apparently forgot to order my prescription for an antibiotic, and I'm having the hardest time reaching them by phone to get them to do this. I left a message yesterday, and I've been on hold with them for the past 10 minutes. I just got through, but I've had to leave a message on voicemail, and I'm betting that I'll still have to call them back. read more

I've been going to Dr Keinarth for many years. Sometimes he's interested & helpful & there were periods when he wasn't paying much attention. He changes & I can't tell how good he is not having the medical knowledge to evaluate that. People rate a doctor on how nice he is or whether he makes them feel good. He's often not available when you're sick & I have to see the P.A. for about the same price. I'm not head over heels but I've been to other doctor offices & this is pretty good comparatively. I have since left Dr Keinarth & am glad I took charge. My current doctor is, Gary Werntz, and I have written a review of him at Red River Family Practice. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Keinarth's for years and have seen him for all kinds of things. I like that they can do bloodwork in-house, but don't like that they don't have an x-ray machine. Dr. Keinarth is a great listener and is very patient and caring. I like him and his PA's are great, but the biggest standout is the nurse who answers the nurse line, Deborah. She took great care of me on several occasions that I will never forget. I would definitely recommend Dr. Keinarth. read more

I have learned much from his demeanor,character, and - last but not least - his knowledge of the "art and science" of family medicine. I've gone Margolin & Keinarth Family Health Center on Burnet for my life insurance physical/annual checkup/labwork since moving to Austin. Dr. Keinarth is a friendly, professional guy and I've been pretty satisfied with every interaction I've had with him. Their practice has accepted both health insurance plans I've had since I've been a patient. The website is lacking and looks like it's from the 90s, but the patient portal is modern and easy to use. The staff is friendly and lab work has been super quick/efficient (a couple days before your exam). I've never spent more than 5 min in the waiting room and even less time waiting in an exam room. I haven't actually been treated for anything there (other than a TDAP booster), but that's where I'd go if I ever needed any non-specialty, non-emergency medical care. read more

RE: Nat P. & Billing Dept - Please understand that Dr Keinarth's office was not attempting to "over bill" you. I am an RN and I understand wellness visits are covered with no copay but if there is any diagnosis/ treatment then the proper coding will trigger additional charges related to treating your medical condition and at this point your insurance company will require a copay. Insurance payment can be very complicated and can be difficult to understand even for those of us involved in healthcare. I can assure you that Dr Keinarth's staff is adept and efficient in making sure that charges are always appropriate. I have been a patient of Dr Keinarth for over 20 years and have always found the staff to be not only competent but also friendly and helpful and responsive to any billing questions that I may have had. I had the worst experience I have ever had at a physician's office and left there in a fit of rage. Too long a story for this little internet site, but the billing is a nightmare there. The office staff is not capable and two of them were downright rude to me. Ridiculous excuse for a healing office. I would give a minus 1 star if I could. read more

There is a reason for Dr. Keinarth's becoming the best doc in Austin. He is very detailed oriented, very knowledgeable and a very patient listener with a resolution to every issues. I am seeing him for about 3 years and extremely happy with healthcare. I end-up going to see him at least about 4-6 times each year. All of his staff are very nice too. I am really amazed to see them open so early 7am!!!! I always received a great service from "Family Health Center". I also find their Patient Portal very helpful which gives me easy access to very valuable information like: Visit Summary, Medications etc. read more

Dr. Keinarth was my Mother's doctor. She was unable to keep food down and contacted his office. The office ran lab test after lab test to determine what was wrong all the while my Mother was going day after day without eating When my Aunt called to raise concerns with the nursing staff she was told in a snarky tone, "if you're so worried about her, why don't you take her to the hospital?" During those weeks my Mother fainted. (We later learned from the hospital that the enzymes in her body indicated she'd had a heart attack.) After a few weeks, my Mother called me and said she was too weak to contact Dr. Keinarth's office to get her latest lab results to determine why she couldn't hold food down; she was starving and weak. When I called they told me the results would be ready in a few more days. I told them that no, we wouldn't wait, she was going to a hospital. On the first day at the hospital they determined she had a blocked artery and for the first time in weeks she was able to keep food down. She told me about this on her second day at the hospital - and how happy she was to eat and then she died while we were mid conversation. People who haven't eaten in weeks are not in a "let's wait and run more tests" situation. My Mother put her trust in him because he was her doctor and trusted that when he said they'd run more tests, they'd eventually get results that would lead her to being able to keep food down. My Mother's trust was misplaced, we intervened too late, and because of both of these she died of a massive heart attack while I was talking to her. I blame myself and this office. I would never recommend anyone see him. I will give him credit that after she passed away, he reached out to my aunt to speak to her about what had happened, and my aunt declined. I'm sure he's a fine doctor and a lovely person, and that this was an exceptionally bad case, but I personally would not recommend him. read more
