Great atmosphere, drinks are excellent and appetizers were very good. Tried the eggplant stack and the octopus and both had great flavor. For main dish I had the chicken piccata- chicken was overcooked but flavor was good. Others had chicken marsala, short rib ragu and lasagna (huge) and all said food was good. There was only one waiter servicing the entire front of the restaurant and so he could not keep pace even though he was really trying. Our drinks sat empty and we had to flag him down to get the bill. That's the second time that has happened to me there. I will definitely be back but more attention is needed to the staffing levels. This was my 4th time dining at Pastaio and I really want to like it but the seating / reservations is a total mess. Every time we have had reservations there there is a ten person line at the podium and the overwhelmed host just just tells us he will text us when the table is ready, and this has been anywhere from 30-60 minutes. This time we thought we were being smart and grabbed a spot at the bar to avoid that wait. We ran into some people we knew and they had been waiting 45 minutes for their entrees. We decided to call it a night after a round because we didn't want to deal with that. Management- if you're reading- don't give out reservations that you can't honor, people will stop coming back. That said the food is good (not great), but I really like the fine dining atmosphere with pretty reasonable prices. Chicken and pasta entrees are in the $20s although the wine pricing is a little high. Service has always been good to the extent that it seems the waitstaff and hosts are doing the best they can in overwhelming situation. I really think if they stop overbooking the restaurant it will be a better experience for everyone and be a long term success. read more

Went for a birthday celebration...made note of it in the reservation. Hostess acknowledged it was a birthday. Waiter was inattentive and didn't even acknowledge the birthday. Visted here with high hopes after local reviews. It's mediocre at best. We were seated enthusiastically by the host with no wait; mini breads served immediately. They were ok. Server was friendly and informative. We did have to ask about specials. We ordered the beet salad, it arrived almost immediately, the salad was generous and the beets were sliced, the goat cheese was evenly crumbled and the greens were fresh. The salad was to include candied walnuts. We did ask (since this is a major component of the dish) she said they had run out yesterday. Seriously? You're within 2 stores. They did not make them today? They should have mentioned this upon ordering a $16 side salad. Next we waited a relatively long time when the restaurant was not busy. Entrees arrived. Ordered two eggplant rollatini entrees and the bolognese paparadelle (ordered over a chicken dish because ofthe homemade pasta factor.) Biggest negative, all dishes arrived lukewarm. That is a complete deal breaker for me. 1. it is not good food safety 2. No, yuck, we do not like cool food, just does not seem fresh. Husband and dining partner were too hungry to wait for reheat. Mine went back, but then it's just a re-heated dish. Server was very nice about this. The eggplant dish was good but not delicious. The pasta side, was over cooked and average flavor sauce, too much, soaking the pasta. The paparadelle dish was average. Too much sauce, slightly spicy but not complex or rich in flavor, not anything special or something delectable. The handmade pasta they tout was overcooked. This may be due to the reheating, but it was not al dente. Would not order again. We ordered Chianti and two Italian beers. The wine was average, fine but not very great. The beer was frankly awful. Something that should be served at a low end sports bar. Very limited beer list. Desserts are local but not made there. Usually order it but did not think the cannoli would be filled to order and soggy shells are not worth it. Last deal breaker, icky plastic grocery bag plopped on the table for the left overs to go. Interior was ok, not terrible but not beautiful. Lacking something to make it inviting. There are better places for quality Italian. The prices are average+ but they do not warrant the below average food quality. May try it again but at this point would not recommend or bring guests. read more

The staff were not told we waited 45 min. No one apologized for the long wait. After dinner they mixed up the bill , had to get refund and pay again. No discount or free drinks offered. Poor management and frankly cannot compete with other Italian restaurants in the area or downtown Detroit. Limited wine list. Food was actually very good , except they were out of two pasta plates BUT. Traditional soup has no flavor at all. It needs work. We did not like the meatballs. My husband & I both ordered chicken dishes. My chicken (chicken tutto fresco) was tough & the shrimp was overcooked. My husband's chicken (Milanese ) lacked seasoning . My son ordered the ravioli & again, no flavor to the sauce. I had the misfortune to eat at Pastaio Handmade Pasta last night. This was my first and last experience with this restaurant. Even though I had made reservations for 5 at 6:30,they seated us at the worst table, right next to the door, freezing everyone at the table, including my poor 95-year-old mother. Every time someone walked in or out, we were greeted with a freezing gust of wind. I couldn't ask for another table because they were full. The waiter was extremely rude and took our order grudgingly, including our dietary restrictions. My mom had to ask for silverware and a napkin. Our entrees took over an hour and were only delivered after we asked for them. My pasta(gluten-free) was dry, and when I asked for some sauce, he grumbled under his breath. Half of our meals were lukewarm, and I suspect they sat at the window for a long time. The manager said it took 17 minutes to cook our meals. My friend had ordered a side of pasta, which he forgot, and then he brought it with cheese, which my friend explicitly asked for there to be no cheese. She sent it back, and he rudely said, "He couldn't remember everything." The manager said the waiter forgot to put in our order, and the waiter said he did put it in. When I didn't ask for a takeout box for my meal, he said under his breath, "Jesus Christ, now what!" Worst of all is that the waiter and the manager blamed each other. We were given a 25% discount on our meals, and we did not leave a tip, the first time ever. Bad service and mediocre food, what a disappointment! read more

Super bummed. We live in GPC so we were excited for a new great dinner place. I was hopeful because I saw the reviews were pretty good; so I took an out of town friend here for a girl's night. Unfortunately we had service and food issues. The restaurant itself is very cute and well decorated. We made a reservation which was not ready for 20 minutes past the time. No worries, it happens. We finally got seated and it was the window seat in the front which I thought could be fun. However, there is no waiting area so once they sat us at our table, we had people standing next to us (very close) waiting for the table and it felt very awkward. The waiter was very nice and they were very good about filling waters. The wines we had were good and I won't lie, the garlic oil bread is fab. After this it went a bit down hill again. We ordered a kale Caesar salad, chicken piccata and the fruti di mare. The salad was disappointing and mayo based (not the good kind with delicious anchovies and olive oil). Then when our entrees came, one was incorrect. I think they brought out Francese instead of piccata. We didn't see the waiter again for about 15 minutes so I ended up just eating it. It was soggy and not great. The Fruti di mare was ok but had giant whole garlic cloves and felt like it was not authentic Italian, quite flat. Neither dish was hot. The pasta was better than the chicken dish but nothing to write home about. I will say the seafood was cooked well. Overall, just pretty disappointed. If I could give it 6 stars I would. Not only did we have phenomenal service, but the food was a 10/10 and totally worth the price! We came in quite close to the end, yet the staff didn't rush us and made sure we felt comfortable. Our server Jeremy was THE BEST!! Not only did he have a welcoming vibe, but he also added a comedic touch. We had the best time with him as our server, and definitely made us want to come back!! On top of that, the inside is decorated so well, and it has a cozy yet fancy vibe. Now about the food, we started off with their yummy complementary bread and oil which was the perfect start. My mom got a kale caesar salad, which was perfectly tossed, and the parmesan on top was the perfect topper. We got a lasagna, Rigatoni Boscaiola, and the Spaghetti Carbonara. Let's just say we all argued about whose dish was the best...(it was definitely Carbonara). Overall an 11/10 experience, and will definitely be going back and asking for Jeremey read more

Italian restaurant. Out of Lasagna, and tiramisu. Tiramisu number 1 dessert in an Italian restaurant. No coffee, except for French Press. Which I usually order to get fresh coffee. Very time consuming. No microwave to warm up French Press. Had to get another French Press. Told him not to bother, takes too long, and they are ready to leave. The food was good. Entrees served with broccoli. Potatoes and salads all a la carte. Shrimp were smaller than expected. Waiter was nice, but not very attentive. Ordered the chocolate cake for dessert. Amazing. Moist and not overly sweet. The restaurant has two separate rooms. We were in the back room, which was fine. Very busy, which is expected, being a new restaurant. So, ambiance is a push, like most new restaurants. Not my cup of tea. Better options for Italian food and prices. read more

Overall a good experience. The food and pasta was well above average for flavor and quality, the atmosphere and seating is nice, staff was friendly. I would suggest getting more on top of some of the operational elements of this place. We found wait times even with a reservation were slightly ridiculous (45+ mins after our reservation time to be seated). Management did compensate for this with free apps and dessert, and again this is something that can likely be fixable with just a little more time and practice with newer staff in balancing how and where to seat people, how quickly service needs to be, and also maybe capping the total time guests have at a table on busy nights. read more

My wife and I went to Pastaio in Grosse Pointe on a recent Saturday at around 4 p.m.. This is a new establishment in Grosse Pointe and we've wanted to try it out for a while now. We were offered a seat at the bar for "happy hour" specials, but declined to try the regular menu. We were seated at a nice table in the front. The ambiance is modern but still comfortable and relaxing. The server and hostess were pleasant. My wife ordered a salmon special and I got the Pappardelle Bolognese. The meal started with house salads, which were very fresh and delicious, and warm bread with oil and spice. The salmon was a huge piece and my wife said it was excellent. My pasta appeared small at first, but was delicious and very filling. Many restaurants come and go from Grosse Pointe because they try to be too much for a market that doesn't want excess. We both think Pastaio hits the mark that others miss. One negative is the entrees did appear to take somewhat long to come out from the kitchen and were not very hot. They may have been sitting for a while waiting to be picked up. The food was prepared very well and would have been even better if it was served hot.
