Dined at Cafe Nini last evening. The food was very good but the service was very, very slow. We were seated immediately but the two servers couldn't decide who should wait on us so we didn't get a drink order in for about 20 minutes. I was about ready to leave. It appeared there were only two servers and no boss. We ordered and again waited. After another long wait, the server came and apologized for the long wait for our dinner. I don't like being hurried in a restaurant but this was ridiculously slow. Not sure I'll return due to the service. read more

Small place inside. 9 tables and about 8 bar stools in here, it's quite cozy and cramped in here. Started off with escargot, sautéed mushrooms, lasagna alla Bolognese, chicken Marsala, eggplant Parmesan and sautéed lake Perch. $154+ Service was okay. The bread was good. The escargot comes with sautéed mushrooms. It was good, sauce that came with it was good for dipping the bread in as well. Even my step-dad tried for three escargot for the first time and liked it. Minestrone and the side salads were okay. The side of blue cheese is $1.50 extra, no wonder mom didn't get it on her salad. The shared sautéed mushroom was good. The perch was lighted breaded, wasn't expecting that, since it was sautéed. It was okay. The lasagne was good, different, but smaller and a lot of sauce. The chicken Marsala was good for my step-dad. Love this place. A quaint, old school romantic Italian restaurant with beautiful decor and great staff. My bestie lives close and frequents this spot for good reason. The food is fabulous! We had: cosmos, house salad w bleu cheese and bread, veal Milanese and eggplant Parmesan. Everything was delectable, and the eggplant was the best I have ever had. Cafe Nini is located on Kercheval in Grosse Pointe. A 10 table establishment with a few more tables outside and food that will not disappoint. I was promptly seated upon entering after being asked if I had a reservation, which I did not. The establishment was bustling with people and somewhat loud from all the over zealous talkers. Some patrons were almost obnoxiously loud with foul language to boot. Keep it classy Grosse Pointe, this isn't Detroit. Our waitress was helpful and friendly and recommended the crispy zucchini and the branzino. The crispy zucchini was delicious. Hands down the best I've ever had. Great crunch and a delicious flavor profile. The branzino came hot and flaky and also had a wonderful flavor and was not over cooked. Once I devoured the fish, I had some tiramisu and also a chicken parm to go. The tiramisu was the low point of the dinner, it wasn't the best in my opinion, however, it was fine. Overall I would definitely eat at Cafe Nini again: I would probably go in later when it isn't so busy, however the busyness didn't affect the service. If you're hungry or you are strapped for time I would NOT recommend Cafe Nini. Servers are slow, they don't come by your table often and it took 30 minutes just for someone to first come to the table and ask for drinks. This is unbelievable. Saw people who swore they had reservations turned away and then a few tables stayed empty. Onto the food. 3 appetizers, bruschetta, zucchini, sausage and peppers- all good. Salad took at least 30 minutes after appetizers- was fair. Others soup came out cold. Shared eggplant parmigiana and carbonara- both good. The table shared 2 desserts- cheesecake and chocolate cake. Eaten here twice since last review. Every meal was a threat to my waistline. Delicious, tasty, elegantly Italian. Service grows only more polished, they even added a shade to the large table in the window so that the evening sun doesn't disrupt with glare. Last night our family ordered 5 dinners for pickup - a Chicken Marsala, House Salad with Salmon, Spaghetti & Meatballs, and 2 orders of Fettuccine Gabriella (which is fettuccini with large shrimp, artichokes in a lobster sauce). However, when we opened the meals back at the house, we found that there were no Fettuccine Gabriellas but instead 2 fettuccine alfredos with small pieces of prosciutto. They were ok...but NOT what we ordered and paid for. The meals that were correct were very good...but we were disappointed. TRUE HIDDEN GEM! This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Grosse Pointe. It is very intimate and cozy inside. Dominic has been our server every time we've been here and he does a fantastic job. He is top notch. I've ordered the chicken caesar salad several times and it is DELISH! My husband and I usually do the couples dinner special which is a great deal. You get two entrees and a bottle of wine. We always leave here lit up from that wine. Plus, they give you this delicious loaf of bread with Parmesan cheese and oil. YUM! My husband has tried their steak and he said it is definitely one of the best steaks he has ever had. All in all, this place is a true hidden gem on "the hill" in Grosse Pointe. Went out for a girls night in Gross Point. The food was pretty good but the service wasn't. There was a great deal that was a bottle of wine, two entrees and two side salads for $50. We got a bottle of merlot, baked ziti and chicken piccata. I kept have to ask for things a numerous of times. I asked for parmesan cheese and oil which took forever to get. My salad was dry on the dressing but I knew it would take 10 minutes to get it. We also asked for bread 5 times and NEVER got it. We love Cafe Nini. This is often our weekend escape for a local nice Italian dinner. We love the steak of poivre, the pasta, the perch dinner and especially the special price dinner. However, apparently the "grilled chicken cesar salad" comes with Sautéed chicken, with a lot of oil and no flavor. As a matter of fact it was shameful for a restaurant with that kind of track record. We sent it back and said, should be "grilled" as menu stated. Came back still sautéed. I hope they fix it and speed the service a little. Café Nini is unmatchable in terms of ambience and restaurant setup. This little gem is situated on Kercheval in the hill in Grosse Pointe. You have to be careful not to miss it, it's so cozy.
